unitheoryis there any way in xubuntu to display password dialogs as normal windows?01:37
unitheorynevermind i figured it out02:02
n2diy I just did an install of 8.10, and then updated/upgraded to 9.04, and I don't have a shutdown option in my system menu!?02:02
unitheorybut it wasn't easy!02:03
unitheoryxfce still doesn't have a menu editor02:03
unitheoryn2diy, try the power button ;]02:03
n2diyunitheory: your joking, I hope?02:04
unitheorywell when you press the power button it will ask you what you want02:04
n2diyunitheory: ah, I didn't know that, let me give it a try, thanks.02:05
unitheoryis there a logout option in the menu? because you can use that to shutdown also02:06
stephen87hello02:11
unitheorygreetings02:11
stephen87how are you?02:11
unitheorygreat, and yourself?02:12
stephen87good, spent the last 2 days trying to get xubuntu installed, finally got it done and came back to thank the person helped me earlier02:13
unitheory2 days? wow you're pretty persistant02:14
stephen87not like i didnt sleep or eat or anything02:16
stephen87os x was too much for this computer...xubuntu seems a little much for it02:18
stephen87it has 2 2.25ghz processors, but only 256mb of ram...02:18
n2diyunitheory: ok, that worked, but is there a way to add the shutdown command to the system menu?02:19
unitheory256mb should be plenty for xubuntu02:19
unitheoryn2diy, yes...02:19
n2diyunitheory: ok, I think I've seen menu edit somewhere before, let me hunt it down, 73.02:20
stephen87is there a way to check and see if xubuntu can see both my processors?02:20
n2diystephen87: lshw02:20
unitheorystephen87, the easiest way is just open applications > system > system monitor02:21
unitheorystephen87, it will show your processors under the system tab and the load under the resources tab.  but gnome-system-monitor is a beast02:21
stephen87"*-cpu:1 DISABLED"02:23
n2diystephen87: what version of Ubuntu are you running?02:25
stephen87xubuntu 9.04 ppc02:25
n2diystephen87: ppc... a Mac?02:26
stephen87yes02:26
n2diystephen87: Haven't played with them, but back in the Dapper days, I had to run an smp kernel on Intel machines.02:27
stephen87ok02:27
n2diystephen87: is this a multi-core machine, or discrete cpu's?02:29
stephen87discrete02:29
n2diystephen87: ok, that is what I played with, an smp kernel is the way to go.02:30
stephen87cool, and i can just aptget one and all should be well yes?02:31
n2diystephen87: once you I'd the kernel you need, apt-get install should work, and then reboot, of course.02:32
stephen87sweet :) thanks02:32
n2diyI'd/IDed, gl.02:33
unitheoryn2diy, this site might help http://bimma.me.uk/2009/04/25/how-to-xfce-46-menu-edit-in-xubuntu-904-jaunty/02:34
stephen87i understood, im getting right now02:34
unitheoryn2diy, you're missing the <Filename>xfce4-logout.desktop</Filename> part02:34
n2diyunitheory: thanks, checking it out now.02:35
stephen87thank you for the help everything is much much faster now02:45

psycho_oreosif I do a dist-upgrade from ibex to jaunty, can I expect a clean upgrade or will there be issues? I am fine with a few minor issues but if its as bad as dist-upgrading from back around 2006ish then I'll probably do a clean install instead16:17

MTecknologyWhat does xubuntu use for the network manager applet?17:19
SiDihm, nm-applet17:20
SiDithe same17:20
MTecknologyoh17:20
MTecknologyIt uses xfce4-power-manager right? I tried using that instead but I lost screen brightness control. How does xfce manage the screen brightness?17:21
SiDiNo, we use gnome-power-manager17:21
MTecknologyoh...17:21
SiDixfce4-power-manager works here too, though17:21
MTecknologyI'm trying to find light weight alternatives that have fewer dependencies17:21
SiDithere are more or less the same, but since the ubuntu guys maintain g-p-m and make sure it works well, its less risky for us to use this one17:22
SiDiand it has the sexy notifications :)17:22
MTecknologythe sexy notifications are from osd-notify17:22
MTecknologygnome-power-manager, nm-applet, and openbox are my heaviest apps (aside from firefox). I'm trying to figure out how to trim the fat off those17:23

eNathanI need some help getting my internet to connect on xubuntu18:27
eNathanas a side note I'm running VMWare but the problem isn't VMWare itself -- as I can boot other linux images through it18:28
eNathanI suppose I would have to re-configure / default the network settings.. I'm not sure how though18:29
SiDierr :/18:29
SiDiif you're using a virtual machine then there should be a specific network proposed to your guest xubuntu OS18:29
SiDii dont know about vmware, but with virtualbox it connects out of the box18:29
eNathanit was working at one point, but I disabled the DHCP / NAT services for vmware at one point, and when I re-enabled them it didn't work18:30
SiDiare you sure you reenabled everything ?18:32
eNathanthe result for eth0 when I run iifconfig doesn't show a network address18:32
SiDiclick on the network icon in the top right of xubuntu, what do you see ?18:32
eNathanim sure.. other linux images work in VMWare at the moment18:32
eNathanWired Network | Auto Eth0 | Configure VPN18:33

Call-Me-Mhey, i have been using 5 days now trying to get a web-page up and running, i have looked at several tutorials, and howto's and i cant seem to understand how to "build my own web host server, i have created a web-page at dreamweaver, but i dont understand what i should do to publish it on my own host server.????!!!??? Help Anyone!?19:10
knomeCall-Me-M, the most common way is to set up an apache web server19:11
knomeCall-Me-M, sudo apt-get install apache219:11
Call-Me-Mi think i have one19:11
Call-Me-Mon my ubuntu server19:11
knomeright, i suppose you do then19:11
knomeCall-Me-M, i'd say you should refer to the apache manual19:12
Call-Me-Mkk19:13
knomeor ask the #httpd -channel19:13
SiDiDreamweaver...19:19
vinnlDon't start :P19:20
_eNathan_callme, you either have to run your own apache server or get web hosting19:23
_eNathan_I wouldn't recommend the former..19:23
_eNathan_dreamweaver is just development and has nothing to do with the web server (other than uploading the site's files via FTP / etc)19:23
SiDi_eNathan_: i dont consider dreamweaver capable of making "web" documents, so whats the point of corrupting the virgin innocent soul of a web server with these ?19:29
_eNathan_SiDi: You're one of those anti-dreamweaver types.. :P Honestly, I use dreamweaver but I don't use the wysiwyg features it has. I code and format using raw xhtml/css/javascript etc19:30
_eNathan_I don't like wysiwyg either19:30
_eNathan_but it's not like dw is evil.. atleast it creates xhtml compliant documents :)19:31
SiDi_eNathan_: im ok with it as long as you know how to code with a notepad :)19:32
_eNathan_started in notepad19:33
SiDiwysiwyg is just a big joke, and it really makes life hard for those who gotta work after people who use that... i lost a lot of time when i was doing web due to people not working properly19:33
_eNathan_I just like syntax higlighting, etc19:33
SiDitry gedit ^^19:33
_eNathan_correction: I like syntax hilighting + remote / local file ftp management19:33
SiDiuse emacs then :d19:34
SiDii usually host the code on my machine so i dont have to upload, and i upload when im done :p19:34
_eNathan_yea, I usually have to uplaod constantly though.. there's no "being done" part19:37
_eNathan_e.g., debugging PHP19:37
_eNathan_and testing19:37
_eNathan_I'm not sure of a way to do that locally.. perhaps installing PHP and a local web server or something..19:38
SiDiyeh19:38
SiDiinstall apache and php19:38
SiDiand then just go to localhost/yourstuff19:38
SiDiyou can get mysql and phpmyadmin too19:38
SiDior postgresql, ruby, etc19:38
SiDi!apache19:38
ubottuLAMP is an acronym for Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP. However, the term is often used for setups using alternative but different software, such as Perl or Python instead of PHP, and Postgres instead of MySQL. For help with setting up LAMP on Ubuntu, see  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP - See also the Server CD installation process (different in Edgy+)19:38
_eNathan_perhaps.. my system resources are too sparse for that at the moment though19:40
_eNathan_I don't do much web development anymore19:40
_eNathan_no more personal projects.. the freelance scene is a dry desert19:41
SiDiheh yeh19:41
SiDithey pay fat web agencies for too often badly done job :(19:41
SiDibut apache isnt so so heavy. and if you're really short on ram, try httpd19:42
_eNathan_I'll keep it in mind (:19:44
SiDilighttpd*19:44
_eNathan_SiDi, what would you recommend for someone wanting to get started doing C++ programming on linux?20:19
_eNathan_I reckon Eclipse is a popular IDE20:23
SiDi_eNathan_: eclipse can be good if you're used to it, yeh20:38
SiDii personally only use gedit, regardless of what im coding20:39
SiDiits enough for my needs :)20:39
_eNathan_gedit doesn't appear to be a compiler21:05
SiDieclipse neither21:07
SiDiyou compile with g++ anyway21:07
RaggsblueJ will compile java21:09
