BlzHey everyone.  I'm trying to set up mythtv to record Comcast Digital Cable through a PVR150 using an IR blaster to control the STB and an RCA composite cable to link the STB to the PVR150.  So far I've managed to scan for channels with apparent success, but when I select "watch TV" in the main menu, the screen goes black for a few moments and then returns to the main menu.01:23
Blzlogs are here:  http://mythbuntu.pastebin.com/f7397cf0f01:23
BlzI can provide aditional logs if need be01:24
troldrikDoes mplayer -cache 8192 /dev/video0 work? may have to use ivtv-utils to set it to the composite input.01:28
BlzI'll be in and out of the room so please feel free to give me further instructions/tips/whatever ... getting mildly desparate =)01:38
Shadow1Blz, first if you are doing stb to pvr150 you dont scan02:07
Shadow1secound you can get a stb that has firewire and use firewire to change channels02:07

BlzShadow1:  I don't scan?  how do I get my channel lineup then?  Is there a tutorial for this somewhere? (I already checked the mythtv wiki)02:49
BlzShadow1:  also, firewire is not an option -- there's no port on the STB02:49
Shadow1you pay for schedulesdirect02:49
BlzShadow1:  I have schedulesdirect already02:50
Shadow1Blz, yes it is an option goto your local comcast place and ask for a firewire box02:50
Blzwhen I had analog cable, I had to do a scan to put all of the channels in the database...02:50
BlzShadow1:  do you know if they'll replace it for free or will it cost something?02:50
Shadow1also on the be setup where you put in the schedules direct info you get the channels there02:50
Shadow1yeah they will replace it for free02:50
Shadow1go get it02:50
Shadow1and when you have analog cable you still dont record you do it the way i said02:51
BlzShadow1:  I thought they only *had* to do that for HD content.  but i guess it's worth a shot anyway02:51
Shadow1also hd is free02:52
Shadow1there is a plan to get hd for free02:52
BlzShadow1:  we might be talking about the same thing (or maybe I'm confused) -- when I set up analog cable, I just plugged in my schedulesdirect account information and then there was a "grab listings" (or something similar) button I used02:52
Shadow1also over firewire you can atleast get local broadcast in hd02:52
BlzShadow1:  oh well I only have an SDTV anyway02:52
Shadow1yeah you do that same procedure for the stb02:52
Blzright. that's what I did02:53
Blzand it grabbed the listings without a problem02:53
Shadow1good02:53
Blzbut now when I want to watch live tv I just get a blank frame for a few seconds and then it returns to the main menu02:53
Shadow1!manual02:53
Zinnhttp://mythbuntu.org/installation_manual02:53
Blzyikes. no 9.04 manual?02:54
Shadow1http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/User_Manual:MythTV_structure02:54
Shadow1just use that02:54
Shadow19.04 doesnt change mythtv features02:54
Shadow1its still .2102:54
Blzright. duh lol02:54
Blzhmm... at first glance i think i went through all of this, but I'll give it a closer look02:54
Blzthanks for the info02:55
Shadow1yeah02:55
Shadow1after you make sure all of that is in order02:55
Blzbtw, just to  be 100% clear (I promise I'm not trying to play dumb), comcast will provide firewire-enabled boxes for SDTV?  Not just HDTV?02:55
Shadow1it doesnt matter for what it is02:55
Shadow1walk in and ask for a box with firewire02:55
Shadow1they have to give it to you02:56
BlzI specifically read that was only for HD...02:56
Blzbut I'll try anyway02:56
Blzoh also... about firewire...02:56
Blzmy understanding is there's two methods of handling that02:56
Blzyou can either just change channels through firewire, or transmit the tv stream to the backend via firewire?02:57
Shadow1yup02:57
Blzis one better than the other?02:57
Shadow1well its not that its better its thtat some channels are encrypted over firewire and some arent02:58
Blzi'm somewhat tempted to just change channels via firewire since I have a PVR150... and I suppose I can take a load off of the CPU by having it handle the MPEG conversion02:58
Shadow1depending on your area02:58
Blzoh even coming out of the firewire port?02:58
Shadow1yes02:58
Shadow1so you can watch some channels02:58
Blzi thought the whole point of the STB was to decrypt encrypted QAM streams... god I hate media companies...02:58
Shadow1but most likely you can not see them all02:58
Blzokay02:58
Blzbut channel changing via firewire works 100%02:59
Shadow1it does decrypt them but for some channels and shows its encrypted over firewire02:59
Shadow1i know that it works02:59
Blzokay, great02:59
Shadow1i have not used it personally so i can not say if its 100 percent02:59
Blzokay. this is still really helpful02:59
Blzcan you point me to a tutorial on changing channels via firewire (if you know of one)?03:00
Shadow1i dont know of one but i am asking someone about it03:00
Blzawesome thank you so much03:00
BlzI'm actually going to go out and grab a case, but if you wouldn't mind posting the link, I'll read it when i get back03:01
Blzthanks again for the help -- this clears up a lot of the confusion03:01
Shadow1yup03:03
Blzaaand back...03:47

chris_Hi guys, wonder if someone can help me?14:31
chris_If I turn my machine (frontend and backend) on with a monitor, I get the frontend displaying as it should.14:31
chris_If I turn it on with my TV connected, I just get the XFCE wallpaper, menubar, but no frontend14:32
chris_cursor moves with mouse input, but keyboard doesn't appear to do anything either14:32
chris_Can anyone suggest why?14:32
EssobiGood morning!14:35
JoshT76do the screen ratios match from monitor to tv? you may try forcing the tv to match what the monitor was then restart gdm14:43
JoshT76just a thought (guessing)14:44

dhotmanI posted my problem as MythbuntuGuest2719:31
dhotmanbasically:19:31
dhotman I am having trouble using an external channel changer script from within mythtv. The channel changer works perfectly fine when run manually from the command line but fails when run by mythtv. The error that I get is that the channel number, which is suppose to passed to the script as $1 is not being passed to the script. Running mythtv backend in a verbose mode using the following command: mythbackend --verbose channel and this 19:32
