ubottuPlease don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line, so others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)00:05
contrast;)00:05
Yanick_contrast, that's what I did, scroll up00:06
contrastsorry, i just joined.00:06
Yanick_well, there it was :00:06
Yanick_Hi, Is there a way to make Jaunty restart properly after suspend/hibernate? Right now, the screen turns on but only to display some random pixels and everything else seems frozen. The network appears to reconnect itself and application to restart correctly but USB/keybaord and all the rest are just frozen. I have a Dell XPS 16 with Kubuntu 64bit00:06
rysiek|plYanick_: probably nobody knows; try searching google for your laptop make and model and kubuntu jaunty00:06
contrastYanick_: are you running desktop effects on an ati card?00:07
Yanick_rysiek|pl, I did. Most newsgroups I find are talking gibbrish to me, others speak about problems *going* into suspend. I have problem resuming. After reading, I would guess that resume doesn't wake up my video card, but I don't know00:07
Yanick_contrast, yes00:08
contrastYanick_: turn off desktop effects before suspending/hibernating00:08
Yanick_contrast, I'm not sure how.... besides, it should be automatic, and also automatically restarting compiz after resume00:08
contrastYanick_: it's as simple as one click each after you add shortcuts for it.00:09
rysiek|plYanick_: it should. but it isn't as you can see. so contrast is trying to debug it a bit00:10
=== greg___ is now known as KoRn-
contrastYanick_: if you're just using kwin's special effects, there's a plasma widget in the repos (plasma-widget-toggle-compositing) that allows one-click toggling of kwin's desktop effects.00:10
Yanick_contrast, the problem I just had is that the laptop went suspend because it was on battery (2 hours remaining, so I didn't worry) I don't manually put the laptop on suspend, and this process (if it happens again) should be automatic00:10
racecar56test, does anyone see this00:11
KoRn-racecar56: I see ya.00:11
rysiek|plracecar56: nope00:11
rysiek|plKoRn-: aww, you've ruined everything ;)00:11
KoRn-Sorry.00:11
melhisedekhow can i make links open in firefox and not konqueror?00:11
KoRn-Haven't been on IRC in years.00:11
rysiek|plYanick_: one of the ways of debugging is limiting things that may b0rk the process00:11
contrastYanick_: the reason it's not automatic is it isn't apci's (the layer which handles suspend/resume) job to change the window manager, and if ati knew how to make a driver, it'd have no reason to.00:12
racecar56my sound isn't working00:12

racecar56rysiek|pl: no00:16
rysiek|plYanick_: is your card nvidia?00:16
racecar56rysiek|pl: just installing kde, i guess i should get kbuntu-desktop00:16
rysiek|plracecar56: yeah, try that: sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop kubuntu-restricted-extras00:17
Yanick_rysiek|pl, nope, ATI00:17
rysiek|plthen don't read a bugreport concerning nvidia ;)00:17
rysiek|plYanick_: ^^^^^^^^00:17
racecar56rysiek|pl: does it make a difference if i use aptitude or apt-get00:17
rysiek|plracecar56: not really; aptitude handles orphaned dependancies better00:17
racecar56rysiek|pl: k00:17
rysiek|plracecar56: i.e. when you install some-package that needs some-other; then remove some-package (and some-other is not needed), aptitude will delete some-other, too00:18
Yanick_rysiek|pl, there are not many threads concerning this problem, even though it seems to be widespread00:18
rysiek|plYanick_: try disabling desktop effects, and then suspending by hand00:18
racecar56rysiek|pl: what the heck it wants to install nvidia drivers00:18
racecar56rysiek|pl: WHY?00:19

rysiek|plit'll give you the list of all installed packages, just the names01:25
* rysiek|pl brb01:25
gundam_rx78nt1rysiek|pl, ummm... how do I get it to install all of those packages after I install a fresh clean version of kubuntu 9.04?01:26

rysiek|plgundam_rx78nt1: then replace all the endlines with spaces01:27
rysiek|plgundam_rx78nt1: and then, after installation, just type in terminal:01:28
rysiek|plgundam_rx78nt1: sudo aptitude install <paste_those_packages_here>01:28
gundam_rx78nt1great. so I can make a diff of the list from a clean install to this list I created and add those packages... correct? and if so... awesome.01:31

rysiek|plyou can even automate the task01:31
gundam_rx78nt1you got my attention...01:32

rysiek|plok, now we can install a clean 9.10 on the laptop and do the same with the default packages01:33
rysiek|pldpkg -l | egrep '^ii' | awk '{ print $2 }' > packages_9.10.clean01:33
rysiek|plnow, creating the diff is not necessary, as aptitude is smart and will not install packages that are already installed01:33
gundam_rx78nt1great.01:33
rysiek|plso, the *.clean file is actually not needed01:34
* rysiek|pl thinks slowly today01:34
rysiek|plgundam_rx78nt1: after the clean installation, just copy the packages_9.10 file01:34
rysiek|plgundam_rx78nt1: and do:01:35
rysiek|plsudo aptitude install $( cat packages_9.10 | tr '\n' ' ' )01:35
rysiek|plaptitude will sort out which packages need to be installed, and will install them01:36

BluesKajCleanLaundry, se the ubottu post above03:15

BlueChiliCleanLaundry, so, why do you need to find the driver location for?03:21
CleanLaundryBlueChili, so I can TRY and copy it over to nUbuntu. Hopefully I can just load it and it will work...03:21
BlueChiliif both systems are the system architecture, libc version, etc they sould03:22
BlueChilishoul03:22
BlueChilid03:22
BlueChilithe other way around it's to compile it as a kernel module then copy it to nUbuntu03:24
BlueChiliCleanLaundry, I'm not sure if the rt drivers are compiled in kernel, or avaiable as a module in Kubuntu03:25
BluesKajBBL ... have to boot into windows for a bit03:25
BlueChiliCleanLaundry, also it should take just a few seconds to get the modules03:26
CleanLaundryBlueChili, so what would you advice me to do?03:27
BlueChilicompile just the module, if you already have build-essential it's better than being poking aroun usr/lib03:28
BlueChiliCleanLaundry, the modules are spread around /usr/lib that's the place where you should find it03:29
CleanLaundryBlueChili, sorry to sound really newbish, just unsure where to start to compile the module?03:31
BlueChiliCleanLaundry, /usr/src/linux03:31

type0negI had to find the right kind/combination of packages...all from command line...aptitude...it was an ordeal06:33

imfinityHello06:38
darthanubisI left ubnutu for 24hrs to run Fedora, and Fedora sucks, but I did like KDE after trying it, so I thought kubuntu, bad idea to use the kubuntu cd even the alt kubuntu cd as the default install of PA was borked06:38
BlueChilidarthanubis: alt.cd was the way to go06:38
darthanubistype0neg: yes06:38
darthanubisBlueChili: I HAD to use the alt.cd because my storage drive is LVM06:39
DaskreeCHI dunno pulseaudio just isn't installed for me06:39
darthanubisMYTHTV in Fedora sucks as well06:39
darthanubisI don't have issues most do with my systems06:39
BlueChilidarthanubis: oh, Fedora starts snappy but performance degrades quite quickly06:40
darthanubisI'm very thorough in my reading of instructions so I solve most of my own, well ALL of my own issues06:40
darthanubisBlueChili: It ran smooth and was fst. I just did not like the way the system files were setup, ,the naming of programs, like "httpd" for "apache"06:41
BlueChilidarthanubis: the kubuntu-desktop package it's the one who brings PA, not that it should06:41
darthanubisApache and Mysql did not start by default06:41
darthanubisBlueChili: well all was fine until I tried to play .nuv files with vlc, and have working audio in amarok06:42
darthanubisboth would not play06:42
darthanubisI solved that only issue a few hours ago06:42
BlueChilidarthanubis: kicked PA out and pulled in xine plugin for VLC?06:43
darthanubisI have Mint 7 on both my wives PCs, xubuntu on the kids, he is 10, and I keep foobuntu on my box06:43
darthanubisBlueChili: nope, installed asoundconfgtk and set default sound card to pulse.06:44
darthanubisalso installed the debiansoundall package06:45
darthanubissonthign like that06:45
darthanubissomething...getting tired06:45
BlueChilidarthanubis: much like the skype workaround for PA06:45
BlueChilidarthanubis: it's late06:46
darthanubisBlueChili: not really, when I used Skype I did not have to do anything for my sound to work, it was the video that was the headache06:46
darthanubisBut Skype uses 32bit libs06:46
darthanubisI'm ALL 64bit06:46
darthanubisI won't be going back to Gnome for quite a while. Been using Gnome since Ubuntu debuted06:47
BlueChilidarthanubis: skype's issue with PA seems to be a gnome only deal06:48
darthanubisWho knew that you don't need compiz for the cube and a large amount of eyecandy!06:48
darthanubisBlueChili: Skype issues for me seemed to be 64bit06:49
BlueChilidarthanubis: and "usability improvements"06:49
darthanubisUbuntu has the BEST Mythtv setup in my opinion06:50
darthanubisthat is my main concern06:50
darthanubiswell Ubuntu and Mint, but I don't even consider Mint a seperate distro, they can call it one if they want to.06:51
darthanubisI don't consider ANY ubuntu knock off as a seperate distro, please.:/06:51

phhwhy use compiz instead of kwin ?13:13
rysiek|plphh: compiz has many more effects and is much, much more polished13:14
rysiek|plthat said, I am using kwin, when I'm on kde4, as it's just better integrated and feels more at home13:14
phhi find kwin way more polished ... last time i tried compiz it was just... unusable.13:15
phhcan't say why, but i really hated it13:15
rysiek|plphh: I am using kde3.5.x with compiz and kde4 with kwin effects on the same laptop13:15
rysiek|plphh: and compiz has *loads* more effects and configuration options, and the animations are an order of magnitude more smooth13:15
StargazersWell, new user is not even able to login to my KDE.13:16
phhhum ok13:16

StargazersMmh. Any ideas what I can do to totally remove old crap of KDE and make clean installation?13:30
rysiek|plStargazers: how did you install kubuntu, and kde4.3 on it?13:30
StargazersI installed ubuntu first. Then I today upgraded to jaunty. I had installed older version of KDE, propablt KDE 4.2 AND Nightly build.13:31
rysiek|plStargazers: when/if you answer to my question I might be able to answer yours13:31

rysiek|plStargazers: I would try downgrading to pure kubuntu, you have to find a howto on downgrading13:34

rysiek|plStargazers: ok, you commented-out the backports repo?13:40

rysiek|plbut you have to do it from CLI ;)13:40

rysiek|plStargazers: sudo aptitude purge kubuntu-desktop13:40
StargazersWell, that is not a problem :)13:40
StargazersWell, have to look o/13:40
rysiek|plStargazers: aptitude should spit out a whole lot of packages to be removed, as they are "not used anymore"13:41
StargazersOk.13:41
rysiek|plkubuntu-desktop is just a metapackage, meaning, it's not a real package, but it depends on all packages needed for kubuntu13:41
rysiek|plso removing only kubuntu-desktop won't dig it; hopefully aptitude will guess what we want to do and will pull the whole kde with it13:42
rysiek|plI assume you have ubuntu-desktop installed, too ;)13:42
StargazersYeah, I have.13:42
rysiek|plStargazers: when you fire up the sudo aptitude remove kubuntu-desktop, tell me if it pulls the rest of the kde packages with it13:43

noaXessbazhang: this happends if i want install quanta: http://paste.ubuntu.com/211337/15:42
bazhangice_, that is a very long thread ^^ probably want to check later pages (out of 93)15:42
bazhangnoaXess, seems the PPA has newer packages that conflict with quanta15:43
bazhangnoaXess, this is the latest kde4 ppa correct?15:44
noaXessbazhang: jep, thats from http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2.9515:45
noaXessbazhang: have you upgraded to this kde version?15:45
bazhangnoaXess, waiting for something less experimental :)15:45
noaXessbazhang: ok.. so, i think... later there will be a newer quanta release.. i hope15:46
noaXessi love quanta to develop web pages in pure html..15:46
noaXessnice ftp sync interface..15:46
bazhangnoaXess, certainly, at some point; how important is quanta to you now is the question15:46
noaXessbazhang: in the moment not very important.. but sometimes i need it to update a customer webpage..15:48
noaXessbazhang: i don't find any clear information, if there will be a kde4 version of quanta..15:48
ice_bazhang: yes intel. but I don't think it depends by video card. Because with an other monitor it works fine..15:48
bazhangnoaXess, ah I see. Not sure when the fix will be in on that, sorry not to know more about that15:48
noaXessbazhang: no problem :)15:49
bazhangice_, this is dual monitors then?15:49
ice_bazhang: no. i have changed monitor. The previous monitor (Samsung 76E) works fine. But this Sampo alphascan does not work over 60Hz refresh. But in windows it works better up to 85 Hz at 1024x76815:51

mermshaushi! quick hint where I can find the ~/.bash_profile equivalent in Kubuntu Jaunty? (or tell me what I have to do to get it re-interpreted?) googling for it drove me crazy.16:22
BluesKajmermshaus, equivalent ? isn't bash_profile is your login ?16:28
mermshausBluesKaj: I have no idea. I tried to add an "alias" line to .bash_profile and restarted Konsole. But well, that didn't work. I can't use the alias. I'm missing something here, right?16:30
BluesKajI think you need root (sudo su ) to edit bash_profile mermshaus16:31
BluesKajmermshaus, this might help clear things up.. http://www.linuxjournal.com/video/bash-startup-scripts-bashrc-and-bashprofile16:32
mermshausBluesKaj: thx, i'll take a look16:32
mermshausBluesKaj: okay, it works if I put it in .bashrc. thanks again16:46
BluesKajyeah, bash_profile is the login ..bashrc is the actual shell16:48

davidjheinrichdoes anyone here know if there is a program for Kubuntu for standards-compliant web-site design that produces simple code? (i.e., I don't want font styles hard-coded and uber-complicated code, as OO.org seems to make)17:26
|MaSa69|davidjheinrich do you mean somethinglike this http://net2.com/nvu/17:29
pantherasпривет17:30
bazhangpantheras, #ubuntu-ru17:30
davidjheinrich|MaSa69| yea, sort of like hat...seems like Kompozer is the replacement for 64-bit Kubuntu17:32
davidjheinrich|MaSa69| what about just code-highlighting? Can Kate do that?17:33
|MaSa69|davidjheinrich yea, i think so17:35
BlueChilidavidheinrich: indeed Kate can do it17:38
davidjheinrichBlueChili: How do I get Kate to do that? just name the file .html?17:41
BlueChiliTools -> highlighting -> Markup17:42
StargazersHi. Stupid question, but HOW I can move widgets from my panel to another place?17:44
davidjheinrichBlueChili: thanks17:44
StargazersI mean, if I had a clock in wrong place in my panel, I can't find how I can move it? :S17:44
StargazersOn KDE 4.3 RC117:44
BlueChiliStargazers: good ol' drag and drop17:45
StargazersBlueChili: Err, tried it but can't make it work.17:45
BlueChilidavidheinrich: k :)17:45
StargazersBlueChili: I can make it if item is on desktop17:45
BlueChiliStargazers: have you unlocked the widgets?17:45
StargazersMmh. Let me see.17:45
StargazersYes.17:46
StargazersThey are unlocked.17:46
StargazersFor example, Application launcher menu.17:46

dhqi need help .... i am a MSc computer network security student and have to do a project as part of my course...  can anyone suggest some topics which are feasable18:04
rysiek|plsep1318: no problem, really ;)18:04
sep1318dhq: what kind of project?18:06
dhqsep1318: well anything related to computer & network security18:06
Stargazerssep1318: Trying to move widget in panel.18:07
sep1318dhq: right, but "project" could mean anything. do you need to code something, do a literature review or other write-up, research, etc...18:07
dhqbits and peices of all ^^18:07
sep1318Stargazers: once you've unlocked the widgets, you need to click on the cashew so you get the panel's resize bar. then you can drag them around.18:09
sep1318dhq: my first suggestion would be something about the ssh bug that debian had a while back.18:09
dhqsep1318: like wat18:09
dhqsep1318:  what is it about18:10
sep1318dhq: it was something about one of the developers commenting out a bit of code that they didn't know what it did, but thought it wasn't necessary, that made it so that every tunnel used the same hash key. i don't quite remember or know everything about it, but it seemed pretty huge.18:12
dhqsep1318: that seems very techie / am looking for something decently easy18:13
cinexthe ssh bug in debian was that it was using a process id number (PID?) to generate the random keys, only it used a number below 1000 always meaning that there were very few combinations. someone had generated a list of keys etc so that all debian machiens could be bruted - quickly18:13
cinexsomething like that18:14
sep1318thanx, cinex.18:14
cinexthose keys are all blacklisted now18:14
sep1318right.18:14
sep1318dhq: i don't know what you have/want to do with it, but i was just suggesting it as a general topic starting point, something that seemed relevant.18:15

sep1318click*18:21
StargazersMmh... let me see18:21
StargazersWell, yeah it seems that I can move that item IF my mouse is NOT over cross.18:22
StargazersUhm.18:22
StargazersBut still I can't move it to the right side of my panel.18:22
StargazersAll items are on the left. Should I add some empty space somehow?18:22
sep1318so you've got a few things on the left and nothing on the right?18:23
sep1318what happens when you try to add something new?18:24
sep1318you may just not have enough items?18:24
sep1318iunno, hairbrained idea.18:24
StargazersWell. Now I have added 3 items. Thgey take about 200px space. I want to move one of those three items at the right side of that panel.18:24
StargazersBut I can't. I can move it right side of other two items, but not at the right of that panel.18:25
