Ahmucknubae: u around tonight?03:49
sbalneavEvening Ahmuck03:49
Ahmuckanyone know offhand if the atom or the nano will work as a thin client?03:50
Ahmucker, sorry, wrong channel03:50
Ahmuckhi sbalneav03:50
sbalneavOf course, I would have answered that here too :)03:52
Ahmuckhow's edubuntu coming along?04:14
Ahmucki dont' see much list traffic04:14
sbalneavI have no idea.04:24
sbalneavThere was a ton of sound and fury a while ago.  A bunch of people wanted a DVD04:24
sbalneavLaserJock went to bat for them, and got a DVD approved by the tech board.04:24
sbalneavNow... the people who wanted the DVD, don't seem to be working on it.04:25
sbalneavMe?  I said I'd fix up the handbook, the LTSP manual, and sabayon, and do some bug work.04:25
sbalneavAnd that's what I'm gonna do.04:25
Ahmuckyes, sadly i looked into my crystal ball and saw the event04:28
sbalneavI, and a few others, will keep plugging away at it.04:29
Ahmucki did notice a mail on the list and the sender got chastised (not helped) for asking the question.  considering the low volume of the list, to get another user, i think i might have replied privately helping and then re-directing04:29
Ahmucki'd love to, however i know no coding04:30
Ahmuckwhich brought me to another idea, is coding falling away?04:30
sbalneavWell, in the "good old days" the people who worked on Unix (or Linux) were all techs04:30
sbalneavBack then, your ratio of users/coders was close to 1:104:31
sbalneavAs Linux becomes more mainstream, that ratio keeps getting higher and higher.04:31
sbalneavThose that can code get spread thinner and thinner with more and more demands from the users.04:33
sbalneavThe problem is, for us, education isn't "sexy"04:33
sbalneavSo, we don't attract as many developers as, say, "big" projects like Firefox, Gnome, KDE, etc, would.04:35
Ahmuckneed some type of funding model04:50
=== ogra_ is now known as ogra
sbalneavMorning all14:41
=== vorian_ is now known as vorian
=== vorian is now known as JSwormbot
=== JSwormbot is now known as vorian
Ahmucksbalneav: imho, that edubuntu really hasn't defined it's direction or who it is yet20:11
=== ogra_ is now known as ogra
sbalneavAhmuck: You know, I keep hearing this.20:19
sbalneavI keep hearing how we need plans20:20
sbalneavHow we need strategy documents20:20
sbalneavHow we need a DVD20:20
sbalneavetc.20:20
sbalneavAnd we've got TONS of plans, documents, etc.20:20
sbalneavWhat I *don't* see, however, is *actual people doing development*20:21
sbalneavLaserJock plugs away on his packaging20:21
sbalneavI plug away on docs, bugfixes, and my upstream tasks20:21
sbalneavWhere are the people who *really wanted* the DVD?20:21
sbalneavWhy aren't they working on it?20:22
sbalneavSigh20:22
sbalneavI suppose I'm being bitter.20:22
sbalneavIgnore me20:22
Lnssbalneav: i concur20:23
Ahmucksbalneav: i don't know what edubuntu is.  originally i thought it was a "classroom" educational system20:23
Ahmucki get the impression now, it's a cd that has linux edu programs on it20:23
sbalneavLns: You concurr you should ignore me? :)20:23
Lnssbalneav: haha..no. i concur with what you said. All talk, very little action20:23
Ahmuckbut there are a plethoria of programs in education, even online flash programs20:23
sbalneavAhmuck: Well, what's a classroom educational system but a cd with programs on it. :)20:24
Ahmuckserver, classroom managment, student management, etc.  i guess that's what i thought.20:25
sbalneavWell, we could sure *DO* all those things.  But we need more butts in more chairs writing more code :)20:25
sbalneavBut like I said last night, those things aren't 'sexy'20:26
sbalneavCase in point: edubuntu handbook.20:26
LnsThe thing is, who's gonna use it even if it is made? Who's going to know how to use it? Are the people who can't install ubuntu+edu apps on top of it and need the edubuntu dvd going to read the docs and learn these systems?20:26
LnsIMHO Edubuntu should be about teaching people how to use the tools Ubuntu+Edu apps offer, not trying to make it so easy to install.20:27
sbalneavI'm working on getting the LTSP portion of it into shape, before I move onto the Edu portion of it.  It's a complete slogload of boring, repetitve, soul-sapping work: making sure tags are good, finding spelling and grammar errors, fixing layout issues.  Hell, that's not even talking about actually *writing words down that go into the document*, that's all just editing and layout.20:28
Lnsi'm just gonna shut up though, i've already said all this before haha20:28
sbalneavIn the end, all we can do is just keep on keepin' on.20:28
* Lns shrugs20:29
sbalneavI'm too invested now to give up, so, I'll still be here.20:29
Lnswho's giving up?20:29
sbalneavWell, sure.  We're just grousing.20:29
Lnswhat are we giving up? =p20:29
sbalneavWe're being Grognards20:30
sbalneav:)20:30
Lnslol20:30
stgrabersbalneav: btw, did you find a good way to syncronise lts-parameters ? like having only a single file that'll be used for the manpage and for the docs ?20:30
sbalneavYes.20:30
sbalneavbzr delete lts-parameters.txt, and beat anyone who doesn't update lts.conf.xml with a soggy trout. :)20:31
sbalneavBut I doub't that will be a popular option :)20:31
stgraberwell, just add it to the CODING guidelines after the line about breaking the fingers of whoever uses tabs instead of spaces ;)20:32
sbalneavIt's *mostly* up to date.  I was actually going to grep "[A-Z]*_[A-Z_]*" through the source code, to see if I missed any.20:32
stgraber" - All if() else blocks will have {}'s, even if only 1 line long, or Ollie will break your thumbs.20:33
stgraber - Comments will be /* */ or Scott will break the rest of your fingers.20:33
stgraber[A[A[AB[B[B20:33
stgraber"20:33
stgraber(sorry for the [A... part ;))20:33
sbalneavOur coding guidelines are quite violent :)20:33
stgraberyeah20:33
sbalneavI know I have to add LDM_THEME20:34
sbalneavstgraber: did you see any other parameters I'm obviously missing?20:34
sbalneavhave a look at the lts.conf.5 manpage.20:34
stgraberyeah, there are a few missing, added a few recently that got added to ltsp-trunk but not ltsp-docs yet and I'm pretty sure things like PRINTER_LIST and DEFAULT_PRINTER aren't documented either20:44
sbalneavIf you could either send me a quick note, or even just add 'em to lts-paramaters.txt, that'd be great.21:23
stgraberyeah, I'll just add them21:26
