knomewhy don't you just remove them, or would you like them to work?02:56
confusiousThese links are basically nothing more than text messages I left on my desktop & I'm assuming that it happened during some updating...anybody have any clue ?? Particularly on how I cab fix these as these were letters I had started to friends relatives etc02:56

igsenHow can I remove "Sun Java 6 Web Start" menu?04:03
knomeigsen, you have to edit (or remove) its corresponding .desktop file manually.04:04
knomei don't know where that is, sorry.04:04
igsenI have already put "NoDisplay=true" on every "sunjava.desktop" I can locate on my computer but it is still there.04:04

confusiousare you guys sure you want to keep on looking for all this ??04:17
confusiousokay.04:17
confusiouswell, not a great loss but can anybody explain to mwe what may have happened ?? I THINK it was because of an update that kind of went afoul04:18
knomean update does not break filesystems04:19
knomeat least not this way04:19
knomethe only explanation i can think of that you have thought you copied the files but the system only created links to the original04:19
knomewhich you since deleted04:19
confusioushmmmmmmmmmm04:20
knomethere is a possibility that they are in trash, but as they didn't show up on locate...04:20

owen1what's the default display manager in xubuntu.09:16
cody-somervilleowen1, gdm09:16
owen1cody-somerville: interesting. thanks09:16
cody-somervillenp09:17
owen1cody-somerville: let's say i want to run an conky with awesome. right now i do it wit a script i run and link to this script from .xinitrc. how to achieve this with gdm?09:30
cody-somervilleowen1, does that not work with gdm?09:32
owen1dgm is not using .xinitrc09:32
owen1i think09:32
owen1right now i have a few lines in .xinitrc, each line different wm09:33
owen1and i comment all of them except for 1.09:33
owen1and I also have link to bash script that runs conky in the background.09:34
owen1so if i want to have conky i uncomment this script.09:34
ablomenowen1, there is also an "autostarted applications" entry in the settings manager btw, thats where i start conky09:34
owen1ablomen: ok. but what if i want to run conky with awesome instead of xfce.09:36
owen1that's why i need to find a way to tell gdm to run my script file.09:36
owen1but only run it for some of my wms.09:37
owen1window managers09:37
ablomenoh awsome is a wm, im guessing editing one of the sessions in /etc somewhere09:37
ablomeni think it was /etc/xdg where you can add sessions, not sure though09:39
owen1ablomen: i'll take a look09:43
owen1/etc/xdg/autostart  -  looks promising09:44
owen1oops. maybe not09:47
techieis there anyway i can run a command before i login so a application is running at the logon screen?10:07
ablomentechie, you would have to make an init file then, or add the command in /etc/rc.local10:12
techiethankyou ablomen10:13
ablomenyw10:13
owen1techie: ablomen is it relevant to my question?10:13
owen1how to configure gdm to run a script before starting one of my window managers?10:13
techieowen1: i do believe that ablomen's answer would most likely work in your case aswell10:14
ablomenno10:14
ablomenit wont10:14
ablomensince owen1 wants a userland application to start10:15
ablomenthat should happen after login10:15
techiehrmm10:15
techiemight he be able to achieve this via run levels?10:15
owen1techie: so u want to run something BEFORE the login screen (gdm)?10:16
techieyes, synergy to be exact10:16
ablomenafaik thats all system wide, conky is user specific, and only works once a dm starts10:16
ablomenowen1, you should google for making gdm sessions, there should be a lot of content about that10:17
owen1ablomen: great, thank you10:17
techieif anyone else is looking for an alternative to buying a KVM switch i highly recommend synergy10:18
owen1techie: what is this10:20
psycho_oreostoo bad it doesn't do sound switching10:20
psycho_oreosowen1, its handy when you have more than one box but have only one keyboard+ mouse+ screen, and/or you want to remove clutter :p google up what kvm is10:21
techiesynergy is an application that allows you to control multiple boxes from one keyboard and mouse pair10:21
psycho_oreosbut those computers have to be networked10:21
techieunfortunately this doesnt show the screen10:21
owen1psycho_oreos: i have kvm that doesn't work with my keyboard10:21
techiebut its handy none the less10:21
psycho_oreostechie, heh well its only km then :D10:21
psycho_oreosowen1, generic brand?10:22
techielol10:22
owen1iogear10:22
techiehttp://synergy2.sourceforge.net/ and good news is that its on aptitude10:23
psycho_oreosI've got a kvm here.. its actually kvm+s but I love having two monitors showing two different things on the screen rather than one for both or two for one boxen10:23
owen1the combination of keys that switches between computers is not available in dinovo edge10:23
psycho_oreosowen1, never heard, I've got aten, costed me heaps but it was somewhat well worth the money10:23
techiethats the upside to this app, you just move the mouse off the side of the screen as if it was a second or third screen10:23
techieno combinations needed10:24
psycho_oreosso that would make it almost like one of those fancy things you see in beryl/compiz lol10:24
psycho_oreosworkspace switching via cursor movement10:24
techiesorta10:25
techiebut instead of being a virtual desktop its a whole different box and possibly even different OS10:25
psycho_oreosyeah10:25
techieim controlling a Xubuntu box from my 2 screen XP box10:25
psycho_oreosmeaning you have dual display and each box gets to use those two displays?10:26
techieno, i have a dual display on my xp machine10:26
techieand another screen on the Xubuntu machine10:27
psycho_oreosahh ok10:27
techieall in all 3 screens10:27
techiei really want to get a virtual desktop from my xp machine and network it onto this box like xinerama10:28
ablomentechie, you have looked at freenx/vnc for that already?10:28
techiebeen down the vnc path before10:29
techietoo slow10:29
psycho_oreosnever tried xinerama, but synergy literally puts itself almost into the same arena as remote desktop software, like vnc lol10:29
techiei need something thats optimised for a virtual screen10:29
ablomenfreenx should be a lot faster, havnt tried it myself though10:29
techiei wil have to look into that10:30
psycho_oreosthere was supposedly a new mode in which vnc can render the updates faster, I think it was using delta display driver or something.. realvnc has it10:30
techiei have come across applications that do exactly what i need in the past but theyve been for the wrong OS10:31
techiehttp://synergy2.sourceforge.net/  <--- for OS X10:32
techiewhoops, wrong link10:32
techiehttp://www.screenrecycler.com/home.html10:32
techiei also found a windows <--> windows application that does the same thing... but im having trouble gettign xp to install as my dvd burner is packign a sad10:33
techiehttp://www.maxivista.com/10:34
techiemaybe ill try installing ME then upgradign to XP vi a USB drive tonight10:35
techieactually ill do that now10:38
techieill jump back on from my windows box10:38
=== Techie-temp is now known as Techie
owen1i want to add querty to my keyboard layout. what is the name for US querty?10:49
owen1Alternative International?10:50
Techiehehe i just realised win ME recommended specs are a 300mhz cpu and 32mb RAM10:50
Techieshould be USA keyboard USA layout10:50
Techieatleast thats what it is in the installer10:50
ablomenalternative international has sticky keys10:51
ablomen(when you press the ' key and then e youll get é)10:51
owen1i am in the keybard layout selection. I opened 'USA'. i see: cherokee, devorak, colemak, macintosh, more devork types, russian phonetic..10:52
owen1btw, i installed xfce. not xubuntu.10:53
owen1i think i might not have querty? since at the installation i chose dvorak.10:57
Techiepossibly, but i wouldnt think so10:57
owen1i see querty under some other languages.10:58

owen1i have 2 - altGr dead keys / with dead keys11:00
owen1which international should i chose?11:00
ablomenaltGr gives you extra chars by pressing altgr+a key, i find it usefull11:00
owen1what's altgr11:01
ablomen(a key as in any key, not the actually A key)11:01
ablomenyour right alt11:01
owen1ok. will i still be able to use it for alt arrow?11:01
ablomenworks like a shift key, shift+1 gives me !, right-alt+1 gives me ¡11:01
ablomenalt arrow?11:02
owen1in irssi11:02
owen1i use alt+left arrow11:02
owen1in FF i use it for back forward11:02
owen1firefox11:02
ablomenwell your left alt wont change, i think the right alt wont work though, not sure11:02
owen1ok. i'll choose no altGr11:02
owen1is there a layout switcher i can add to a panel?11:05
ablomenyes there is11:06
owen1maybe i need to manualy install it11:07
ablomenxfce4-goodies11:07
ablomeni think its in there11:07
owen1thanks11:08
owen1i still don't see language switcher there11:11
owen1(installed the goodies11:11
ablomenhmm, i have "keyboard layout switcher" in my "add items to panel" screen, and i know i didnt install it seperatly11:12
owen1i only installed xfce3 and xfce4-goodies11:12
owen1xfce411:12
knome"Keyboard Layouts"11:12
knomeowen1, i'd recommend installing xubuntu-desktop, but that's up to you.11:13
owen1knome: i will probably do it11:13
knomeowen1, you might do it instantly, as that probably solves this also.11:13
owen1it was 200mb vs 50mb (i think)11:14
knomei honestly think it's worth it11:14
knomeyou can always uninstall stuff you don't like11:14
knomeor want11:14
owen1150mb for a language swicher...11:15
knomeit's not only language switcher you get.11:16
owen1a bash script is 1 k...11:16
knomeright, don't install xubuntu-desktop then11:16
owen1knome: come on. i am kidding.11:16
knomebut do understand you might have some problems11:16
owen1i'll run 'aptitude show' to see why it's so big.11:17
ablomen(xfce4-xkb-plugin << thats it i think, but i doo agree with knome)11:17
knomeowen1, it'll bring abiword and gnumeric in for example11:17
owen1thanks guys. installing the xkb11:18
owen1it works. now i am trying to find what is running behind the surface when i switch between querty and dvorak. i think it's setxkbmap -layout us  but i am not sure.11:21
ablomenowen1, goodies.xfce.org << you can browse the source here :)11:24
owen1c++?11:24
owen1setxkbmap -layout dvorak   and       setxkbmap -layout us11:25
owen1now for my final investigation. why when i run those commands with awesome windom manager i get: "Couldn't interpret _XKB_RULES_NAMES property. Use defaults: rules - 'xorg' model - 'pc105' layout - 'us"11:29
owen1and arrow keys, alt, ctrl, pageup, pagedown stop working.11:29
owen1maybe now after installing xfce4-xkb-plugin it will work with no issues?11:30
th0rowen1: (th0r is waiting for an expert before offering a suggestion <smile>)11:30
owen1th0r: any hints?11:31
th0rowen1: it looks like there is no definition for the keyboard layout so X is using a default, which obviously doesn't work quite right.11:31
th0rowen1: I would suggest (maybe with the plugin you just mentioned) redefining the keyboard (I would first try US-101) and see if that helps11:32
owen1but why is it working on xfce?11:32
th0rowen1: where is it NOT working?11:33
owen1th0r: in awesome11:33
th0rowen1: sorry...not familiar with awesome11:33
owen1but let me try again. maybe i had to install xfce4-xkb-plugin11:33
owen1th0r: u should try awesome. it's a tiling wm11:33
owen1very powerful11:34
owen1ok. logging in with awesome. don't go anywere (-:11:34
th0rowen1: looks like awesome does not use the same definition file for the keyboard as xfce, which would explain the diff.11:37
owen1th0r: ablomen good news! thank you so much guys11:39
owen1i guess it was the plugin11:39
ablomenheh good :011:39
ablomen* :)11:39
owen1when i use dgm it seems like .Xdefault is not used.  is it true?11:48
owen1(i think so since my xterm looks like crap)11:49
th0rowen1: from what I read awesome doesnt use the xlib, so it is quite possible .xdefaults isn't read11:49
owen1th0r: when i login from console i run starx, which calls .xininrc and i think also .xdefaults. the problem is only when i don't use the console to login and instead i use gdm.11:51
owen1gdm is not calling .xinitrc by default. (i still need to find a way to configure it). i guess it also not using .Xdefaults11:52
th0rowen1: yeah...gdm doesn't use .xdefaults, or .profile either if I recall11:52
owen1so how do i tell him to use it?11:52
th0rowen1: I wasn't able to find a way....almost went back to using startx11:54
owen1th0r: wow, i guess i'll use startx...11:54
owen1i already installed gdm. if i run sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop, will it not never show up?11:55
owen1will it never show up?11:55
th0rowen1: yeah....last time I ended up installing wdm to replace gdm....found gdm had too many limitations11:55
owen1th0r: ok. bye bye gdm11:55
th0rowen1: might just do that again if I am in the mood <smile>11:57
owen1http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic/2820/slim-gdm-and-xdefaults-file-solved/12:02
owen1i guess there are workarounds, but why bother. just use console based login.12:03
owen1good night@!12:04

bummplehi, I was just using the xubuntu live cd without a hitch, so I installed it14:12

crazygirI've an issue with networking that is stumping me a bit.. I can access websites, ssh, etc fine.. though ftp isn't able to resolve, and I can't ping places like www.gooogle.com, but I can ping hosts on the LAN. I previously had two interfaces, one of which was supposed to be dedicated to vbox, but would somehow goof up the connections after some use. I've since removed the extra card, and setup eth1 (there's no eth0 for some reason) in /etc/networks15:27
crazygirany thoughts? not sure what I'm missing here15:27
ablomencrazygir, it probably is a wrong dns setting15:29

crazygirIM's like aim/icq don't work, nor ftp15:32
crazygirrest of the network is fine, and I didn't have the issue last night. I accessed the vm from home last night, and I think that is what goofs up the configuration with the other network card15:33
crazygirbut at this point, I've removed that card and explicitly set dhcp in /etc/networking/interfaces for eth115:33
crazygirso I'm a bit at a loss.15:34

ubottuDon't feel ignored and repeat your question quickly; if nobody knows your answer, nobody will answer you. You can search  https://help.ubuntu.com or http://ubuntuforums.org while you wait.17:53
th0rarmada: you can force x to reconfigure....but I won't guarantee it will work. Just a sec and I will get the command17:54

=== Odin is now known as Guest30143
