NoelJBSo when they hit the repos, or for people who want to do this manually, all should be good.00:33
NoelJByofel: I know, but for testing I prefer to force a clean start.00:33
NoelJBBy the way, does anyone know why ... well, when the new login screen comes up, it shows a computer icon with the computer name, but if you click on the icon, the text switches to say "squeeze/sid".  Something that hasn't been cleaned up from debian import?00:34

mac9416Hello, I am working on making a submission for Karmic's default wallpaper. I'm editing a Wiki page now, but I don't know how to upload my images. Do I have to an image-bucket?02:37
rwwmac9416: click "Attachments" at the top of the page, then upload it there. Then, within the page, you'd want to do something like {{attachment:example.png}}02:53
PiciOkay thats odd.  mpd just started playing music.02:53
rwwPici: that's the fanfare that accompanies all messages by me02:53
mac9416:-D02:53
PiciI didn't have any music type applications open. I was reading something on firefox.02:54
mac9416Twilight Zone?02:54
PiciWell, I was looking at a photo of a beach when this steel drum music started to play.  It was eerie.02:56
PiciI'd file a bug, but I don't know how to diagnose something that just starts working on its own.03:04
mac9416Well, fellas, I'm not going to be able to get it all done tonight, Thanks for your help, g'night.03:06
Hobbseehm, how can I force X to detect an external monitor at a higher resolution than it does now?03:12
NoelJBHobbsee, that can depend on the monitor.  New modern monitors should report them resolution.  Older ones ... well, nothing to do but force it as far as I know.03:12
HobbseeNoelJB: i'm not sure if it's jsut the graphics card not handling the high resolution - it can be done in display properties when connected to another machine.  Do you have information on forcing it?03:13
NoelJBBy "force" I meant manual config of xorg.conf03:14
NoelJBIt all works fine with a different graphics card?03:14

yofelhm, ok, then that wasn't the problem15:10
Bmw1000c:( do you have the same problem?15:10
yofelcause I can't reproduce it here15:10
gnomefreakrecover system is not enough info to help you15:11
yofelno, but when using fullscreen firefox or vlc I sometimes saw the desktop background with that option enabled15:11
oldude67ok new update for the xorg-intel update did not help with the intel video issues...arrrg..oh well thats the way the cookie crumbles i guess...:(15:11
Bmw1000coh, i see15:12
oldude67anyway can i add my cdrom to fstab to get k3b or brasero to see it or will that not help?15:12
gnomefreakoldude67: it depedns on the issues not just will it fix the issues15:12
oldude67gnomefreak, for which problem are you referring too?15:13
gnomefreakoldude67: not sure you were the one referring to a problem15:13
* gnomefreak has no intel or problem15:13
Bmw1000cehe15:13
gnomefreakwell bzr issues but thats not a package problem15:13
gnomefreakha it worked15:13
oldude67gnomefreak, well my intel 915 isnt playing well with the -3 kernel15:14
oldude67and k3b and brasero isnt seeing my cd or dvd burners..so15:14
BluesKajoldude67, nautilus doesn't see the cdrom with media cd or dvd in it ?15:15
gnomefreakoldude67: they are not related15:15
oldude67gnomefreak, i know that...im not that blond15:15
oldude67BluesKaj, let me check i know sysinfo sees them15:16
gnomefreakas i recall there are a few (not sure how many) bugs on intel drivers. i didnt look at changelog from karmic-changes list so i dont know what fixes were done15:18
oldude67BluesKaj, has an error with it saying it is write protected15:23
oldude67http://pastebin.com/mcc6a59f15:25
BluesKajoldude67, the media has an error because it prolly is write protected ..if you placed a commercially produced cd or dvd in the drive15:25
oldude67BluesKaj, it has a blank cd in it15:26
BluesKajok, does youfstab have a /dev/ sr0 listed ? it's prolly at the bottom15:27
BluesKajoldude67, something like this : dev/sr0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 015:29
Sarvattoldude67: if you have a flickering problem that needs a kernel upgrade and there probably wont be a kernel upgrade for about a week because of alpha 3 getting released (plus the fixes arent in linus' tree yet so they might not even make it to rc4).. what you can do for now is just add i915.modeset=0 to grub after the quiet splash part15:30
Sarvattanyone having problems with gpg and ssh agents just dying an hour or so after boot?15:30
gnomefreakthat would help if there was a grub2 menu.lst :)15:32
Sarvattits called /etc/default/grub15:32
Sarvattthen sudo update-grub215:32
gnomefreaki havent gone playing in it yet15:32
gnomefreakSarvatt: ah15:32
yofel!grub2 | gnomefreak15:33
ubottugnomefreak: GRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager in Karmic. For more information on GRUB2 please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Grub215:33

gnomefreaki didnt say i read it i just added it15:33
* gnomefreak been extreamly busy so far maybe it will calm down by lunch so i can get out of house15:34
* gnomefreak gone for a while. my ;ag is going to be real bad in a minute15:34
EagleScreenGrub2 does not put in the menu list other OS than Linux in karmic for me15:34
yofelEagleScreen: see the wiki page section dual-booting15:35
Sarvattshouldnt add that unless ya need it, i think oldude67 had a problem with flickering thats related  the fifo watermarking code used in KMS starting in 2.6.31-rc3 (alot of people are having that problem)15:35
EagleScreenI only have got Karmic and Vista, no way to show Vista in Grub2 menu15:35
yofel!grub2 > EagleScreen15:35
ubottuEagleScreen, please see my private message15:35
gnomefreakEagleScreen: the wiki above will tell you how15:35
* gnomefreak still not here15:35
EagleScreenyes, reading15:35
oldude67Sarvatt, yes i was told that but there was an update this morning for the xorg intel video i  thought maybe it would of helped i was just stating that i checked and it didnt15:36
Sarvattah, its not something the xorg driver can fix unfortunately, when you use KMS like all of the kernels do by default since 2.6.30-10 alot of the things are handled in the kernel instead of the driver, but if you add i915.modeset=1 to grub you go back to using the driver controlled stuff15:37
oldude67for now i can boot up into the -2 kerenel which isnt to bad other then i still would like to be able to burn cds15:37
EagleScreendue this issue i am using GRUB legacy for now, i am going to test this workaround now, thanks15:37
Sarvattdo you have os-proper installed EagleScreen?15:40
Sarvattprober15:40
BluesKajEagleScreen, look in  /boot/grub/grub.cfg15:40

BluesKajEagleScreen, psatebin your grub.cfg15:42
EagleScreenwait a moment, installing grub2 again15:43
Sarvattyou dont manually edit grub.cfg anymore15:46
oldude67i did notice that fstab it only says one thing about the cdrom and i have a cd and a dvd burner shouldnt there be two of them lines in there?15:46
EagleScreeni never edit grub.cfg I did it with /etc/grub.d scripts15:47
Sarvattwhen you run sudo update-grub2 after installing grub2 can you upload your /etc/boot/grub.conf to pastebin to see whats happening?15:47
EagleScreenwait i just have installed grub2 after using grub-legacy for a few days, i will reboot now to see the results15:48
EagleScreensee you in a moment15:49
Sarvattoh did you sudo update-grub-from-legacy or whatever?15:49
BluesKajSarvatt, my /etc/boot/grub.conf is empty , but I'm running grub2 , hence my /boot/grub/grub.cfg suggestion15:50
Sarvattoops did I say .conf? i meant .cfg15:50
Sarvattsorry15:51
EagleScreenhi again15:52
EagleScreenafer installing again grub2, menu is correct, the possible change is that now i have installed libdebian-installer415:52
SarvattEagleScreen: did you run sudo update-grub-from-legacy to upgrade to grub2? or did you pick dont chainload when you reinstalled it?15:52
EagleScreenI didnt have that package installed15:52
Sarvattah15:52
Sarvattdid the grub screen look different this time than last time?15:53
EagleScreenyes, i run upgrade-grub-from-legacy, now GRUB2 1.96 menu is displayed15:53
EagleScreenVista and Extra kernel are showed, all right15:54
BluesKajSarvatt,  /etc/boot/grub.cfg15:54

oldude67would updating grub help me with my cdrom issue?15:58
oldude67or is that for partitions?15:59
EagleScreenI used to recover grub-legacy by the command "grub-install --root-directory=/root/for/grub '(hd0)'", is this valid for grub2??15:59
oldude67thought it would be for them too?15:59
Sarvattsudo grub-install /dev/whatever16:00
Sarvatt(is how I recover it, not sure if you dont have an existing grub.cfg in /boot/grub/)16:00
EagleScreenok, thanks16:02
Sarvattlike, boot a livecd, mkdir /tmp/disk && mount /dev/sda1 /tmp/disk && sudo chroot /tmp/disk and then sudo grub-install /dev/sda1 in there16:02

oldude67yes16:22
oldude67oh wait no it gives me a error about being write protected16:22
oldude67hold on ill do a dmesg | tail and tell you16:22
Sarvattyea thats the error i saw earlier16:24
BluesKajoldude67, sudo update grub2,  after installing . Otherwise the legacy grub is still enabled16:24
BluesKajerr sudo update-grub216:25
oldude67sudo update-grub2 command not found16:26
Sarvatthave to sudo upgrade-grub-from-legacy first16:28
BluesKajok if sudo update-grub works then grub isn't installed16:28
BluesKajgrub2 isn't installed16:28
BluesKajdamn KB is getting old like me :)16:28

oldude67brb more coffee...lol...16:42
Sarvattgood idea :)16:42
DanaGgrub2 wouldn't chainload, for me.16:44
DanaGI tried boot.img and core.img; neither worked.16:44
oldude67ok im back16:44
BluesKajoldude67, sudo update-grub2 should generate grub.cfg , then find your linux images followed by the windows chainloader16:45
DanaGoh, and grub-efi is missing the gfxterm and vbe modules.16:45
Sarvattbecause you need an efi framebuffer device to do those things, vesa doesnt exist in efi except through emulation and you can just use grub-pc if the emulation works16:47
oldude67so what am i looking for now?16:48
DanaGWell, the thing was, I tried a different grub.efi from the forums, and the gfxterm worked there.16:50
DanaGOh, and something I really need to file a bug on, after all: UEFI booting recently broke -- system won't acknowledge the initramfs.16:50
oldude67and i do have a grub.cfg16:50

BluesKajoldude67, did sudo update-grub2 show it finding the linux images while generating the grub2 menu ?16:51
oldude67BluesKaj, yes16:51

oldude67Sarvatt, ok then upgrade grub2 again17:05

yofelMartinoT: no idea then, sry17:12
rippsHmmm.... things seem to be bit faster today. But my gnome-panel keeps crashing and restarting17:13
MartinoTI did reboot after the update and I was born this problem17:14

BluesKajoldude67, very strange about your cdrom tho ..puzzling17:22

Bmw1000cakio http://www.techfuels.com/linux-free-bsd/5559-grub-profile.html23:28
Bmw1000cTo profile Grub, click on the 'Esc' key while booting. Then, click 'e' over the first entry. Next, click 'e' again over the second line to edit it. At the end of this line, include the word 'profile' after a space and hit the 'Enter' key.23:28
Bmw1000cHit 'b' to continue with the boot process. It will take significantly longer to complete the boot process the first time. Profiling will have to be done every time the kernel is updated.23:28
Twigathyoh man, what on earth changed the firefox search such that it's now a "google custom search" and none of the stuff like images/videos are on the top >_<23:28
akioBmw1000c, wow, thanks.23:28
BUGabundoBmw1000c:  not using my hacked version of bootchart? :(((23:28
akioDidn't know about that one.23:29
Bmw1000cTwigathy go to addons and uninstall the multi search addon (or something like that)23:29

Bmw1000coh well it's almost the same23:29
BUGabundonope23:29
BUGabundono 'e', no 'b'23:30
akioI can figure it out. I have grubPC23:30
akioor 1.9623:30
akiothe new one23:30
Bmw1000cBUGabundo but you DID NOT told me this "Profiling will have to be done every time the kernel is updated."23:30
BUGabundogrubpc is grub223:30
BUGabundoBmw1000c: it used to be true23:30
BUGabundoso much has changed :)23:30
Bmw1000cso i dont need to profile it again?23:31
alteregoahmm i removed almost anything on user rights hmm23:31
Bmw1000cnaah you are fooling me, so you can be faster than me, isn't it??23:31
BUGabundoTwigathy: EXIM???23:32
yofelalteregoa: check what partition your / is on with 'df', then boot into a live-disk and ping me again please23:32
* BUGabundo slaps Twigathy around with an wet towel23:32
Bmw1000cTwigathy https://files.getdropbox.com/u/1416038/bmw-desktop-karmic-20090625-4.png23:32
Bmw1000c10 secs boot23:32
BUGabundoBmw1000c: boot profiling is heavy23:32
BUGabundoshould only be done WHEN required23:33
Bmw1000cakio check the link also.. i had a 20mb/s disk improvement with "profile"23:33
TwigathyBUGabundo: oh, yes... that got pulled in when mdadm installed >:(23:33
BUGabundowront23:33
BUGabundo*wrong23:33
* Twigathy goes to get rid of it - don't actually run raid here23:33
BUGabundoit should have used MTA23:33
alteregoai replace the users file23:33
BUGabundoand on ubuntu MTA default is postfix23:33
TwigathyBUGabundo: well maybe I did something wrong then :o23:33
BUGabundoTwigathy: please file a bug on LP and uptream debian23:33
yofelalteregoa: why that?23:34
BUGabundoTwigathy: how can a compactflash with 18MiB/s boot in 20 secs?!?!?!23:36
TwigathyBUGabundo: NFS root >:)23:36
TwigathySo it only reads off stuff from /boot23:36
BUGabundoahh23:36
TwigathyI'm pleased it is no slower than a hard disk though :)23:36
Twigathy(Boot process that is, not the CF. I know the CF sucks)23:36
Twigathyargh, I can't get rid of exim!23:37
TwigathyIt is HIDING somewhere...23:37
alteregoahow can i add myself to sudoers file?23:42
yofelalteregoa: on the live-cd now?23:42
alteregoayeah its starting....23:42
yofelyou need to add yourself to the admin group23:43
alteregoathats a weird thing, i used the users manager and removed any right23:43
DanaGI found that, last time I did a profiling, it made it SLOWER.23:44
DanaGIt precached too much!23:44
Bmw1000cwatching youtube HD with flash is very slow, does this happen to you too?23:44
yofelwell,  you also removed yourself from the admin group and lost sudo rights with that I guess23:44
BUGabundoDanaG: which is strange23:44
BUGabundoI would say file a bug, but then Colin will close it and say that a user should do profiling23:44
BUGabundolike he did on a bug where my readhaed took like 2 min23:45
alteregoaok im logged in23:51
cwillu_cloneBUGabundo, are you trying to refute theories with facts again?23:52
alteregoathe sudoers file, i hope i find that23:52
BUGabundocwillu?23:52
yofelalteregoa: you don't need the sudoers file, you need to re-ad yourself to the admin group23:52
cwillu_clonealteregoa, if you're just not in the admin group, then you just need to run "addgroup alteregoa admin" from the recovery prompt23:52
cwillu_cloneif you have to edit the sudoers file and you don't know exactly why, then you probably don't have to edit the sudoers file and editing it will just make your life truly miserable23:53
cwillu_cloneBUGabundo, re: profiling :p23:53
alteregoayofel: and how?23:53
cwillu_clonealteregoa, I just told you23:53
alteregoaah recovery prompt23:53
alteregoahmm i started from the cd now23:53
cwillu_cloneyou could do it from the cd too, but it's probably easier to just reboot into the recovery prompt :p23:54
yofelalteregoa: actually do what cwillu_clone told you, it's easier. I just forgot about it...23:54
cwillu_clonefrom the cd, you'd have to mount /dev/sda1 /mnt (assuming your root is on sda1), then chroot /mnt, and then addgroup..., and then exit, and then umount /mnt, and then reboot, and then... :p23:55
BUGabundocwillu  you know I'm slow! what's that again ?23:56
alteregoaok23:56
alteregoachroot makes /mnt to /23:57
alteregoafascinating23:57
BUGabundoerrr23:57
BUGabundono23:57
