aragood morning all!07:29

davmor3hello14:07
davmor2davmor3: that seems to work14:07
davmor2hello14:07
davmor2morning cgregan14:48
cgregandavmor2: good morning!14:51
davmor2cgregan: karmic has flashing lights on the wifi switch on the acer aspire one :)  It made me a saddeningly happy bunny14:53
cgreganhehe14:54
cgreganMy wifi light blinked into existence when I updated too14:54
fader_Sheesh.  Mine has been blinking nonstop since Jaunty.14:54
* fader_ mutters something about "newbies".14:55
* davmor2 bitch slaps fader_ while he isn't lookin' :P14:55
fader_Hmm, maybe I do like davmor3 better than davmor2...14:56
fader_sudo apt-get purge davmor214:56
davmor2fader_: check out the info on davmor314:57
davmor2fader_: real name should tickle you14:57
fader_Heh, 'evil twin' indeed.  I don't think there's a 'good twin' in there :)14:57
fader_Ah!  I get it... you're actually triplets!  davmor1 was the good one!14:58
* davmor3 kicks fader_ in the nuts for insinuating that davmor2 isn't the good twin14:58
fader_Hehe... I'm going to be in the hospital by the time this day is over14:58
* davmor3 slowly reverses the car over fader_ while he's rolling on the floor 14:59
fader_You've been taking lessons from my ex, haven't you?15:00
davmor3no current ;)15:01
fader_Heh15:02
davmor3just teasing dude no need to get that confused :)15:05
fader_Nah, no worries :)  I just decided not to escalate it by calling your bluff and shipping my Significant Other over to you to teach you a lesson ;)15:08
melissawmhello!16:25
davmor2hello16:27
melissawmi'd really like to join karmic testing, but i have some questions16:33
melissawmcan you guys help me? :P16:33
davmor2melissawm: fire away16:36
melissawmok first question16:39
melissawmi have /home in a separate partition16:40
melissawmif i install karmic in another / partition, and use the same /home, will i ruin all my config files? (i suspect yes, but...)16:40
fader_melissawm: 'ruin' is a strong word, but they will get used and might be updated by newer versions of the software16:43
melissawmas long as there are no show stoppers (flash stops working in both versions or all my plasma gets ruined in jaunty by a bad update) i'm ok with that...16:43
fader_One way to work around that is to use a different username on your karmic install, or to make a backup of your /home directory16:43
melissawmi should mention i'm using kubuntu16:44
fader_I can't make any promises, as it is still under development :)  But I haven't had any showstoppers like that moving from jaunty to karmic16:44
melissawmok thanks for that :)16:44
fader_(Backups are always a good idea anyway :) )16:44
melissawmyes i do have 35 different backups as i'm a backup-paranoid lol16:45
fader_Perfect! :D16:45
melissawmsecond question: are there any serious issues currently with 64-bit?16:45
fader_64-bit has been stable for me and I don't recall hearing about any showstoppers with it.16:46
fader_The big thing to consider there is if you have any proprietary software that is 32-bit.  Anything OSS is likely to be fine.16:46
davmor264 bit is fine.  kubuntu has some issues minor but annoying16:46
melissawmcan you give me an example?16:47
melissawmno, i'm ok... i think the only major thing i need to have is matlab, and that only depends on java so if java is ok, i should be fine16:47
davmor2arora crashes from time to time when using flash16:48
davmor2there are others16:48
melissawmok... so it might be better to keep a jaunty install in case anything truly bad happens16:49
davmor2before you jump in and add a / partition you might want to think about trying it in vm first to be sure that it does everything you need it too16:49
melissawmhm good idea, hadn't thought about that16:49
melissawmis there a how to or should i just install it in virtualbox or something?16:50
fader_I don't know of any specific howtos... it should be pretty straightforward if you know how to use virtualbox already16:54
melissawmok16:54
fader_With the added benefit that you don't have to burn a CD to test it, as virtualbox can read the ISO image :)16:54
melissawmsure..16:58
melissawmok16:58
melissawmi guess that's what i wanted to know.. thanks a lot :)16:58
fader_melissawm: No problem... good luck :)16:58
fader_Remember to file bugs if you find problems ;)16:58
melissawmsure!16:59
davmor2fader_: if? don't you mean when16:59
melissawmi'll be back _when_ i have problems :P16:59
fader_davmor2: Nah, I'm pretty sure they got the last one yesterday.16:59
melissawmlol16:59
sean5446hey is it bad if i install ubuntu on an extended partition?17:00
fader_melissawm: Great, testers are always welcome :)17:00
melissawmok! see you around guys, have a nice day/night17:00
davmor2fader_: is that the fragrant smell of the farm outside or bulls**t that your speaking I can smell ;)17:00
fader_sean5446: Nope, extended partitions should be fine.  I believe I heard somewhere that some older BIOSes have trouble booting from them but I've never had that happen to me17:00
sean5446ok thanks17:01
fader_davmor2: Oh behave :P17:01
davmor2fader_: What? I'm only saying what everyone else was wishing they'd got in first :)17:05
fader_... can't let him see me cry... :'(17:07
* davmor2 hugs fader_ to cheer him up, well that or scare the crap out of him so he stops crying17:08
davmor2fader_: hows the automated stuff going dude?17:12
fader_davmor2: Shaky at the moment... one of the tests is broken and preventing us from getting results.  But cr3 is all over it, so I have faith that we'll have it working again soon :)17:13
davmor2:(17:14
* davmor2 thinks he might run out of time to test and then it'll all be on fader_'s shoulders ;)17:15
fader_My shoulders are weak17:16
davmor2fader_: can you try something quick for me please?  In a fresh karmic goto rhythmbox and click on magnatune select blind divine.  then click on a track.  It should throw up codec search but then actually look for gstreamer_input rather than mp3 I think is the bug17:49
fader_davmor2: Sure, give me a minute and I'll verify17:50
davmor2thanks17:50
fader_"The requested plugins are: Gstreamer element input-selector"17:56
fader_Yeah, seeing that here as well17:56
sbeattiedavmor2: I'm seeing that post-upgrade as well.17:58
* sbeattie went insane and upgraded his laptop to karmic last night17:59
sbeattiedavmor2: also, can you try any radio streams? They're not working at all for me.17:59
* davmor2 slaps sbeattie then himself for remembering he's already done his netbook :)17:59
davmor2sbeattie: I get the same thing input-selector so it's finding the streams if that helps18:01
davmor2tea time18:01
davmor2back soon18:01
sbeattiedavmor2: hrm, .pls files aren't understood here, I get a "couldn't determine type of stream" error18:02
sbeattieThe input thing I find if I try playing a secons song, it works.18:03
fader_sbeattie: Streaming works for me...18:06
fader_At least on my laptop, which already has the MP3 codec18:07
sbeattiefader_: can you try playing http://kexp-mp3-128k.cac.washington.edu:8000/listen.pls ?18:09
fader_sbeattie: Works for me when added to Rhythmbox as a new radio station18:10
sbeattiehrm, I deleted it and re-added and it still didn't work. I can play mp3s locally, and if I add http://kexp-mp3-128k.cac.washington.edu:8000/ (the url inside of the listen.pls file) it plays that as well.18:11
fader_sbeattie: Did you upgrade to karmic or wipe and install?18:12
sbeattieupgrade. wipe and install is for wusses.18:12
fader_Heh :)18:13
sbeattieaka sane people.18:13
fader_That's the same thing I did though18:13
fader_Though I haven't done an apt-get upgrade in probably 3-4 days18:14
fader_Hmm, looks like my gstreamer* and rhythmbox are up to date though18:15
davmor2fader_: so it's just your taste in music that isn't then just like me :)18:17
fader_davmor2: My taste in music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Psfn6iOfS818:19
fader_(Which is admittedly less likely to be as funny to those outside of the US)18:19
davmor2fader_: I stand by my earlier comment weirdo18:21
sbeattieI'm partial to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3CmXGKXOmk but a UK resident like davmor2 might appreciate http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1vwKZiDsY4 (all in the interests of exercising the flash plugin of course :-) )18:36
davmor2sbeattie, fader_: how do these guys have the time to put things like that together?18:45
fader_Who knew Tony Blair could sing?18:54
