ZxcvbI tried installing the 2.6.30.3 kernel package from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.30.3/ but when I go to install the nvidia kernel module, I get an error because the kernel was compiled with gcc 4.2 but I have 4.301:22
Zxcvbany idea where I can get a working 2.6.30.3 kernel package short of manually compiling it?01:23

UOHow do I images my dual-booting XP and Kubuntu 9.04 ext4 filesystem?01:37
Zxcvbhas anyone used the kernel packages from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.30.3/ ?01:50
jasaNope, 2.6.30+ should be faster on server usage but yet i turned down to 8.0.42 Hoary from Fedora 11.01:53
jasaUsually good site to check benchmarks on new kernels and drivers is "www.phoronix.com"01:54
Zxcvbjasa: other than that site, where else can you get 2.6.30+ kernel packages?01:55
jasaZxcvb: Well those new drivers usually everyone compiles themselves, like dvb-api and sound drivers and some small bug fixes.01:56
Zxcvbjasa: because using the package from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.30.3/, the nvidia driver install gives a "gcc version check failed" error01:56
jasahttp://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=linux_2631_rc2&num=2 (Early 2.6.31 benchmark)01:57
Zxcvbjasa: I am not doing it for performance, I want the updated drivers01:58
jasaYou could try those new beta drivers from nvidia, or what is the newest always.01:58
Zxcvbjasa: no, the video4linux drivers for the wintv usb tuner01:59
jasaZxcvb: WinTV-CI module ? Does it work in linux yet ?01:59
Zxcvbjasa: it's an xc5000, but the analog tuner doesn't work with 2.6.2802:00
=== root is now known as Guest48832
elZxcvb: You should not try to get a kernel that is compiled with 4.3 - Instead you should try to get the nvidia kernel module to compile with 4.2.02:00
elFirst, check whether you have gcc-4.2 installed.02:00
Zxcvbbut gcc --version is gcc (Ubuntu 4.3.3-5ubuntu4) 4.3.302:01
eltype "which gcc-4.2"02:02
Zxcvbnothing02:02
jasaZxcvb: Nods, i have the troublesome HVR-4000 that does indeed work now, yet if i could get some good cccam share lines or would get that CI module and get Viasat shared to my comp from other room. -.-02:02
elIf that gives you no output then "sudo apt-get install gcc-4.2"02:02
elAnd then try "sudo CC=gcc-4.2 ./NVIDIA-blah.run"02:02
Zxcvbisn't gcc 4.3 the default for jaunty?02:03
jasagcc (GCC) 4.2.4 (Ubuntu 4.2.4-1ubuntu4) here.02:04
elYou said your kernel was compiled with 4.202:05
jasaYeah, you need to compile both kernel and modules with same gcc.02:05
Zxcvbalso, how would I download a bunch of packages and all their dependancies (other than those already on the install dvd) for later use?02:06
jasaFor later use, use some ftp mirroring tool to download those locally ?02:06
elI'm quite sure there is a simpler way, but you could use apt-get's --download-only option and then copy the downloaded packages from your apt cache.02:08
elBtw I have a question too: Can I somehow set two different repeat rates for two keyboards?02:08
Zxcvbel: the only catch is that the target system is 32 bit (netbook with newer atheros card) and my current system is x86_6402:09
jasael: i think xinput command with specified pci id could do that.02:09
Zxcvbel: I guess the easiest way would be to install the 32 bit kubuntu in a virtual machine02:09
Zxcvbjasa: wierd, attempting to remove gcc-4.3-base and gcc-4.3 would remove the whole system here02:13
jasaZxcvb: Yeah i hate depencies like that, i would have shot down libasound too and compiled new one, but doesn't like that.02:14
elWell why would you want to remove gcc-4.3?02:14
elWhy don't you just install gcc-4.2 in addition?02:15
jasaZxcvb: And if you accidently do something like that with recompiling you need to reinstall package from apt-get. -.-02:15
jasaZxcvb: I would guess there would be package called "compat-gcc-42" there.02:15
Zxcvbjasa: what arch are you on?02:17
jasai386 or is that i586 ... well basic one still cause everything hasn't been transformed to x86_64 world yet.02:18
Zxcvbthat might be it then, I am on x86_64 and gcc-4.3 is on the cd02:18
Zxcvbis it possible to have modules compiled with a different gcc than the kernel?02:19
jasaI would consider not, they would have those undefined symbol issues or similiar things in them if trying to load.02:20
jasaBut i might be wrong on that.02:20
jasaWell you could install newest nvidia drivers from medibuntu repo too if you wouldn't like to compile, they work atleast.02:23
elDid you try what I said? Install gcc-4.2 alongside 4.3 and use CC=gcc-4.2 while running nvidia installer?02:24
Zxcvbel: not yet02:30

Mamarokraphink: if there are enough French speaking KDE users you should make a #kubuntu-fr channel10:40
Mamarokonly there have to be enough people around10:40
antototgoodbye =)10:40
raphink yes I know about that Mamarok10:41
Mamarokraphink: I volunteer for help there, too :)10:42
raphinksure ;)10:42
raphinkI just like to help people when I can, and I don't like to send them to channels where I'm not and they might not get an answer when I'm able to give them an answer10:42
raphinknow when a channel is crowded with people and has tons of messages a minute, I'm happy to just go away to solve a problem10:43
raphinkbut when there's practically nothing happening, it's a pain to move away just for a few minutes10:43
raphinkbut that's just my point, and I know the policy you want people to follow10:43
snarksteranyonehere able to answer my question?10:43
raphinkbeen there, done that, managed these very channels myself in the past ;)10:43
raphinksnarkster: what is your question?10:43
snarksterraphink: is the solution for playing wma files in amarok install kubuntu-restricted-extras?10:44

ForgeAusDator?11:39
ForgeAususing a router should help you connect to the internet... generally speaking11:39

ForgeAusntldr is the program windows uses to start itseful up11:48
ForgeAusits called a boot manger11:48
DatorHmm its missing how do i fix it?11:48
ForgeAuskubuntu uses something called GRUB instead11:48
DatorOk11:48
ForgeAusno its likely that it isn't missing actually11:48

DatorMaybe i can find it in bios?11:48
ForgeAus(you can either take a snapshot of your grub loader and place it as a file in Ntldr (the hard way), or let grub handle ntldr for you .. however... the ntldr missing thing is an issue you might need fixed before you fix grub...11:49
ForgeAusyour windows disk should be able to fix that , go to ##windows to ask about that there...11:49
