pteague_workis there a way to get the xfce terminal to open defaulting to the 1st tab rather than the last tab when restoring a session on login?00:41
yesitjustmei tried connecting my hdtv on my computer to use as a monitor but is not displaying, on my pc i use a vga 15 pin male to male cable what could be wrong?01:31
matthewhello. Why is the check for updates disabled in firefox?02:09
=== matthew is now known as Guest25166
=== Guest25166 is now known as MTec007
MTec007is there a valid reason? if not how to i reverse that?02:10
pteague_workwhat dev & kernel packages do i need in order to compile alsa sound drivers?02:10
th0rMTec007: it would have helped if you had restated the question after going through the nick changes. The reason is that firefox is updated through synaptic. If the update feature of firefox was enabled synaptic would never know what version you had installed02:12
xyloxpteague, i suppose build-essential02:12
th0rpteague: you might also try apt-get build-dep <packagename> (I think that is it)02:13
MTec007th0r: what if that doesnt matter to me?02:14
xyloxwhat's up th0r, how you doing02:14
th0rMTec007: you can uninstall firefox in synaptic and then install the generic download from the mozilla website. That will enable the updates from mozilla02:15
th0rhi xylox02:15
MTec007also what exactly is firefox ubuntu modification add on? what does it do? i disabled it..02:15
MTec007i once heard that uninstalling firefox will mess something up in xubuntu?02:16
th0rMTec007: not sure....I imagine it is just a package to make firefox conform to the default icon and window dressing package for ubuntu02:16
th0rMTec007: it might...not sure. I actually don't do updates...too many headaches, so never tried the firefox thing02:17
MTec007okay02:18
MTec007im still waiting on firefox 3.5.. someone in here told me it was going to be added within a few days of the release02:19
th0rMTec007: it is available, but as shiretoko or some such. won't be officially part of ubuntu til 9.1002:19
th0r!ff3502:20
ubottuFirefox 3.5 Final is available for Jaunty by installing the package firefox-3.5 and firefox-3.5-gnome-support | FF3.5 is referred to as Shiretoko on your UI, see http://is.gd/1reB3 for an explanation | Hardy & Intrepid: http://is.gd/1jkNY02:20

psycho_oreoswhat specs?10:14
zhxkpardon?10:16
zhxkceleron 733mhz 256m10:16
psycho_oreoswhat are your computer specifications? the one that is running xubuntu10:16
psycho_oreosah10:16
psycho_oreoshmm 256 is somewhat small10:17
zhxk4m video memory10:17
psycho_oreosyeah even smaller lol10:18
psycho_oreosyou won't be able to run high res lol10:18
zhxkall is somewaht samll10:19
zhxkits a notebook, i sometime use it to download file while before go to bed10:19
zhxkit have a 100m nic10:20
psycho_oreosit'd probably be more ideal if you ran something like DSL10:21
zhxkit runs well on windows xp,  can open decates of page10:21
zhxkdecades10:21
zhxkwith a opensource browser, based on mozilla engine10:22
psycho_oreosand windows != linux.. vice versa10:22
Araneidae(x)ubuntu is a big hefty distribution, but maybe an even lighter desktop will help10:22
zhxklinux ought be better oterwise10:22
zhxkotherwise10:23
psycho_oreosit is better but you can't expect to compare open source with a proprietary software10:23
AraneidaeUbuntu is a little bit bloated, struggles on small boxes10:23
zhxkwithout gtk2?10:23
psycho_oreoswindows lacks heaps of features compared to linux, that's probably one of the reasons why it has a reasonably small footprint10:23
AraneidaeWell, there are plenty of small footprint linuxes...10:24
Araneidaeand xfce is still quite a big desktop, I think10:24
AraneidaeTry a lightweight desktop, maybe something like openbox?10:24
zhxkactually, i need a lightweght browser10:24
psycho_oreoslynx10:24
psycho_oreoslol10:24
psycho_oreosI think lxde runs on small footprint10:25
zhxklxde?10:26
zhxki know lynx is text based browser10:26
psycho_oreosyes lynx is text based, lxde I think is a de that was used in knoppix 6.110:26
AraneidaeGoogle says: LXDE.org | Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (www.lxde.org)10:26
zhxki want a fullfledged browser, which can play flw10:26
AraneidaeWell, if your machine is small, you need to reduce memory consumption everywhere you can.10:27
zhxklinux shorts browser10:27
* Araneidae goes to take a closer look at lxde10:28
Araneidaeeh?10:28
zhxkno good liightweight browser on linux10:28
psycho_oreosthere is/are10:28
zhxkfirefox a bit expensive10:28
psycho_oreosyou just have to look for them10:28
knomezhxk, epiphany. midori.10:29
psycho_oreosfirefox starts off light but has mem leak issues10:29
zhxkit seems c coded program often  leak resources, but c++ is good10:30
Araneidaehahahaha10:30
* Araneidae thinks C++ was a big mistake10:30
zhxkyou will consider when should free resource while you plan to alloc10:30
zhxkyou will get messed using c10:31
zhxkyou need to be aidded with uml tools otherwise10:31
psycho_oreosand if you were right then you should probably look for another platform10:32
AraneidaeAnd you think C++ magically gets it right?  Don't we all wish...10:32
psycho_oreosmost of linux (btw linux technically is actually just a kernel) source are either C or ASM10:32
zhxkwindows actually have lots of com that written in c++, and all functions good10:32
psycho_oreosagain comparing against proprietary product10:33
Araneidaewhatever (my contempt for windows will not fit into this conversation...)10:33
psycho_oreosI don't understand why people love to pit it against windows, there are some similarities but it is not the equivalent10:35
zhxki think linux should learn sth from windows10:35
psycho_oreosits like comparing against a generic medicine vs a proprietary medicine10:35
psycho_oreoslinux doesn't need to learn much from windows.. if they do, redmond will happily be handing out fines10:35
psycho_oreoswill you be happy to pay for those fees?10:36
zhxkmaybe since its free, so no quality garantee10:37
Araneidaepsycho_oreos, thanks for the pointer to lxde.  Going to give that a quick try10:37
psycho_oreosbetter than paying for a software that prevents you from doing this and that and other things like running things behind your back10:37
psycho_oreosAraneidae, nw10:38
psycho_oreosand here we have someone who wants more from community provided food for the masses.. aren't you asking a bit too much? or do you have such a high expectancy that you fail to be more lenient?10:39
psycho_oreosthere are paid support and commercial linux distributions, if you want this and that, you better start forking out money10:40
zhxkhonest, linux needs more arts job to work10:40
psycho_oreoslinux needs less whingers/complainers10:40
Araneidae^^^ this10:40
zhxki already started that, forking out energy10:41
psycho_oreosand windows needs no energy? poor comparison10:41
psycho_oreosand btw energy != money10:41
zhxkwindows is overwellming10:42
psycho_oreosyeah for someone who likes payware but couldn't afford to fork out money for commercial versions of linux yet complains about free linux distributions being poor workmanship10:43
psycho_oreosmakes perfect sense10:43
zhxkdude, linux should be good before fork out memory for10:46
tashcan someone help me mount a usb had drive10:46
psycho_oreosand that made no sense zhxk, again complaining when you are getting something that is literally free?10:46
tashis there a terminal command i can use10:46
psycho_oreosif you're so happy with windows why not stick with it? take your complaints elsewhere10:47
psycho_oreostash, there is fdisk -l and man mount10:47
tashwill fdisk not clear my harddrive?10:47
tashi don want to remove the files on it10:48
psycho_oreosno when you parse fdisk -l (note -l) it will list detected hard drives and their partition10:49
psycho_oreosman fdisk for more info10:50
AraneidaeMaybe `cat /proc/partitions` is more direct!10:51
Araneidaetash, yes, I've got the same situation: just inserted a (formatted) USB device10:52
AraneidaeIt didn't automount, but it now appears in /proc/partitions (as sdf and sdf1)10:53
AraneidaeWonder why it didn't automount...10:53
psycho_oreoshmm interesting10:53
AraneidaeAnd, for what it's worth, `fdisk -l` (as ordinary user) says not a thing!10:53
tashAraneidae, how did you then access it10:53
AraneidaeOh, I have to mount it.10:54
psycho_oreosthough I guess I'm used to the way fdisk -l organises the disks and the layout with partition type, etc10:54
AraneidaeFor example, `mount /dev/sdf1 /media/special` should to the trick10:54
psycho_oreosahh I forgot you need to use sudo for those commands (i.e. sudo for fdisk and sudo for mount)10:54
psycho_oreos!mount10:54
ubottumount is used to attach devices to directories. See also https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount10:54
AraneidaeYes: `sudo mount /dev/sdf1 /media/special` (or any other mount point of your choice) does the job10:55
AraneidaeNot altogether friendly, though: *should* have automounted!10:55
Araneidaepsycho_oreos, well, the nice thing about `cat /proc/partitions` is that it doesn't require root10:56
psycho_oreosweird to hear that its not getting automounted.. are you both using 8.10 or latter versions of ubuntu?10:56
tashsadly i see no good results yet :(10:56
psycho_oreosAraneidae, that's true10:56
AraneidaeI'm Ubuntu 9.0410:56
psycho_oreosAraneidae, but I guess I'm slightly old fashioned, I use fdisk -l on other distros lol10:56
psycho_oreosAraneidae, weird, my devices always automount10:57
Araneidaetash, what does /proc/partitions have to say?10:57
psycho_oreoswell yeah by default it should automount and open up thunar to reveal the contents of the automounted drive/partition10:57
psycho_oreosI suggest you use pastebin if pasting it in here10:57
psycho_oreos!pastebin10:57
ubottupastebin is a service to post multiple-lined texts so you don't flood the channel. Ubuntu pastebin is at  http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://tinyurl.com/imagebin | !pastebinit to paste directly from  command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic10:57
AraneidaeWell, I'm currently not using a standard desktop10:57
tashAraneidae, has 4 tings10:58
Araneidae -- currently got openbox loaded10:58
psycho_oreosAraneidae, ahh using some other de/wm?10:58
psycho_oreosahh10:58
AraneidaeIt's *nearly* what I want...10:58
psycho_oreosI'm on standard one (xfce) and yeah it has options that you can tick/check to have it automounted and what not10:58
AraneidaeGot a couple of annoying features I haven't figured my way around yet...10:58
Araneidaetash, list the fourth column only10:59
tashpsycho_oreos, where are hose xfce options?10:59
psycho_oreostash, sudo mkdir /media/disk && sudo mount -t auto /dev/<insert_partition_here_i.e._sda2> /media/disk10:59
AraneidaeYeah: we haven't got the <insert_partion_here...> bit yet!11:00
zhxklets make linux better together11:00
tashsda, sda1, sda2, sda511:00
AraneidaeSettings buried in Applications->Settings menus I would guess11:00
AraneidaeThose are all your hard disk partitions.  Are you sure the USB device is plugged in?11:01
psycho_oreostash, its under settings > removeable drives and media11:01
AraneidaeTry lsusb11:01
tashthanks11:01
AraneidaeHuh.  My USB card doesn't appear under lsusb?  That's odd11:02
psycho_oreoswhat sort of card?11:02
psycho_oreosmaybe you might need sudo ;)11:02
AraneidaeOh, maybe it does.  Just shows the manufacturer name11:02
AraneidaeThink it's this guy: ID 3538:0054 Power Quotient International Co., Ltd11:03
AraneidaeYep: unplugged it and it's gone.11:03
psycho_oreostoo bad there's no lspci -k equivalent for lsusb11:04
AraneidaeSo, tash, what does lsusb tell us?  Is your USB memory stick actually plugged in?11:04
AraneidaeUseful option!11:04
Araneidaealas11:05
AraneidaeWhere does automount happen?  Must be something to do with udev device notifications...11:05
psycho_oreosyeah I'm not quite sure how it works, udev and automountd?11:06
AraneidaeWell, I know that udev is told when drivers are initialised in the kernel, and it then populates /dev11:06
AraneidaeDon't know what happens after that, though.11:07
AraneidaeNothing called automountd on my box...11:07
psycho_oreosyeah same here, hmm I know automountd is/was responsibie for automatically mounting any unmounted partitions/drives11:09
AraneidaeAll sorts of interesting things in /etc/udev/rules.d, but nothing that seems relevant to automount11:09
psycho_oreosudevadm may show something interesting heh11:11
zhxkhello, xfce4 upper and lower bars gone, why?11:14
AraneidaeHuh: `udevadm info` needs rather specific queries11:15
SiDi_Alt+F2 then type xfce4-panel zhxk11:15
SiDi_i think there are a few bugs about the panels on launchpad, btw11:15

TheSheepdetails?17:43
TheSheepyou can't really expect anyone to help you with just this information17:43
viddi thought sheep were grass-powered-wool-produces....they run on electricity now?=]17:45
planetaryok well i did the install shell script and it came up with errors at the end. and it is not working. i looked on ES website for help17:45
planetaryhaha17:45
planetaryits a cool screensaver17:45
planetaryi would like to post the errors but i lost the terminal and forget how to get a log of it17:46
viddplanetary, im not sure i would run a script asking for my root passwd17:48
charlie-tcaYou can look in /var/log/dpkg and /var/log/dmesg for information on it17:49
charlie-tcaThere might be something there17:50
planetaryhere is athe webpage i used  http://community.sheepserver.net/node/5117:51
viddplanetary, have you opened the script and actually READ it?17:52
planetaryya it seems fine17:54
viddso rather then running the script, enter each line into terminal17:54
SiDithis script is bad17:55
SiDiit executes code from their svn without letting you explicitely know17:55
SiDiIf it had been a virus you would have lost all your data, planetary17:55
SiDiyou should be much more careful17:55
viddyeah....17:56
viddlike i said.....i wont run a script that wants my password17:56
planetaryohh ya that make sense. I am still a noob to this stuff17:57
SiDiplanetary: when you are asked to execute a script or executable of any kind, you should refuse17:58
planetaryso what should i do. I had it on my 8.04 version, then they upgraded their version. i would like to have it on my new version, 9.0417:58
SiDionly take the applications inside our repositories17:58
SiDiif you really need something from outside, make sure others never had problems with it, or come here and ask us17:58
viddit can also (especially since you gave it your passwd) install a rootkit on your system17:59
planetaryok. i wasn't thinking17:59
SiDiNow, about your problem with electric sheep, well, im sorry but i have no idea17:59
planetaryok17:59
SiDiIt looks like it takes their very latest version from their site and tries to install it17:59
SiDiyou might be lacking packages, or they might have broken the latest version17:59
viddyou can right now be spamming the world or being used as a bot-net controller17:59
* vidd would HIGHLY recommend you get an anti-rootkit app18:00
vidd!rootkit18:00
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about rootkit18:00

SiDihe does DNA tests every morning to check if he's still himself18:02
viddhehe18:02
planetaryok soo, how would i get rid of what was installed18:02
planetaryhaha18:02
viddplanetary, you'd need to find out what was actually installed18:02
planetaryah, and how do i check that?18:03
viddthere should be a "flam3"directory and a "flam3/client" folder in whatever directory you started the script in18:04
viddread the files there to find out what should have been done during the make and make installs, and undo it18:04
planetarywell the makesheep.sh is on my desktop. now there is a electric sheep folder18:05
viddor, if your REALLY paranoid (like me) back up your data, format and re-install18:05
planetaryhmm i wonder if it should. my only other issue with this install is that my task list is screwy. i have compiz on and the task list doesnt like to work with it18:07
planetaryif i click on a window that is on another workspace  it doesnt do anything18:08
planetary vidd, so how do i undo it?18:16
viddplanetary, you read the make files, find out what they tried to do and undo it18:17
viddim not downloading and running that script to get that info.....18:18
vidd=]18:18
viddthis machine has access to too much important stuff18:18
vidd(i work for an ISP and have access to all kinds of sensitive data)18:19
planetaryya but i dont understand how to do that. the make file doesn't make sense to me :(18:20

charlie-tcaowen1_: Is the computer bios clock set to UTC?19:04
owen1_charlie-tca: do i need to go to bios to figure it out?19:12
charlie-tcaprobably. If the bios clock is set to local time and ubuntu thinks it is set to UTC, it will be off by about what it is.19:13
viddowen1_, what time server you looking @?19:13
owen1_vidd: not sure i understand your question. i want local time, in LA.19:14
owen1_i use date command19:14
charlie-tcaLooks to be off by about 13 hours19:14
viddowen1_, set up your system to use nttp so it will auto-update and syncronize with a time server19:15
viddowen1_, your bios is set to local time, and tzdata is expecting it to be utc time19:16
viddowen1_, check out http://www.computerhope.com/unix/udate.htm19:18
owen1_vidd: i'll do it. thanks!19:21

psycho_oreosany of you know exactly where xfce4 keeps the autostart applications? on ibex I used to manually add my own .desktop into /etc/xdg/autostart but using the GUI method now I can see the entries in GUI but I can't find or pinpoint the exact location of where such files are stored... what annoys me more is the lack of ability for autostart applications once created to be edited without having to remove and add again.20:01
viddpsycho_oreos, ~/.config/autostart20:03
psycho_oreosvidd, ahh thanks20:03
psycho_oreosth0r, so what was the issue with those ath chipsets?20:12
S0210Something created a "Nyilvános" directory in /home/user/ . (It means something like "Public" in Hungarian.) How can I check what (and why) put it there?20:29
viddS0210, that is standard in all *buntu's since 9.04 (possibly earlier)20:30

knomem4rk, you can try epiphany and midori, but the latter is in alpha stage.21:41
m4rkokey dokey! thanks21:41
SiDi(chromium-browser)21:43
SiDi(alpha too :p)21:43

SiDiim serious, m4rk21:44
