gp_will_be_backit just came out of the blue11:06
gp_will_be_backi though journaling file system like ext3 was better11:07
slangasekgp_will_be_back: journaling filesystems are better than non-journaling filesystems, as a general rule.  If you're saying that you recently changed your filesystem type, then that may account for the boot being unable to find your disk, since the UUID of a partition is part of the filesystem metadata.11:12
slangasekgp_will_be_back: when it drops you to the shell, run 'ls /dev/disk/by-uuid' to confirm that the kernel can still see /some/ disk11:12
slangasekthis is not a help channel, however, and you haven't really given much of the information that would be needed to help you (what version of Ubuntu you're running, what kind of disk you're booting from, etc).  If you're not finding help in the correct channels on IRC (#ubuntu), you're probably better off trying the Ubuntu Forums11:14
gp_will_be_backls ls /dev/disk/by-uuid is getting listed11:14

gp_will_be_backc1b5187-f0aa-8aca-a5f7663e923811:18
slangasekyou might want to consider getting an Ubuntu liveCD and booting your system from that - that should a) give you access to your disk, b) give you time to reach the forums to fully debug this problem11:19
StevenKThat isn't close to the error message you typed earlier11:19
gp_will_be_back...........while boot it says : unable to mount /dev/disk/by-uid/d125634 blah blah  does not exits ...droping to shell :--->>> this file is not there11:19

=== riddell__ is now known as Riddelll

gp_will_be_backits scsi-1ata_st960... ata_96011:23
slangasekagain, I would suggest doing this by getting a liveCD to use for recovery11:23
gp_will_be_backwell i recovered the data by running ........sudo e2fsck /dev/sda1 and then mounting11:24

gp_will_be_backit was running fine as horse11:26
slangasekthen why did you run any fsck command?11:26
gp_will_be_backbcos it was mounting the system11:27
gp_will_be_backso i went into live cd ....tried mounting and failed11:27

gp_will_be_backthen i rebooted11:28
gp_will_be_backthats after taking backup11:28
gp_will_be_backafter i saw same uid error11:29
slangasekif you already have backups of your data, I think you'll find it much more straightforward to reinstall, then restore your data.11:29
slangasekif you don't want to do that, I think booting from a liveCD and seeking help in the forums is your better option11:30
gp_will_be_backjust like windoZ11:30

slangasekIRC is usually not a very effective medium for walking through complex problems of this nature, and this is not a help channel...11:30
gp_will_be_backwhat filesystem is more stable and wont crash again ex3 or ext4 ?11:31
liwall filesystems are complicated enough that no implementation of them is totally bug-free, so any filesystem may some day crash, if you are unlucky11:31
liw(sorry if that is unhelpful)11:31
slangasekwhat you're describing here was not a filesystem crash.  A filesystem crash would not have caused the UUID of your partition to change.11:32
gp_will_be_backwhich one should i use11:32
liw(also, what slangasek said)11:32

s0u][ighthello12:37
s0u][ighti have a suggestion/question12:38
hyperair!ask | s0u][ight12:39
ubottus0u][ight: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line, so others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)12:39
s0u][ightsince most common laptops (and pc's) nowadays have a rescue partition in stead of an install cd, and since these can only be used by calling a restore application which will somehow interact with the windows bootloader and make it boot into the rescue partition12:39
s0u][ightinstalling grub kills this feature12:40
s0u][ighti have tryed to boot into this partition using grub, it failed12:41
s0u][ightreinstalled the windows bootloader (don't ask me how i did it, spend all day to get my original bootloader back)12:41
s0u][ightand tryed it again and it worked12:41
s0u][ightis it normal that actually installing ubuntu is killing this capability, shouldn't you guys prevent this from happening, and now the real question: is there a way to boot into linux using the windows bootloader12:42
Hobbseeto the latter, yes, iirc12:44
s0u][ightHobbsee do you also know how?12:45
* Hobbsee is looking for info on it12:45
s0u][ighti managed to fix the issue, i can now always reinstall the windows bootloader, but i don't think that will be the case for a lot of users12:46
Hobbsees0u][ight: it's alluded to in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot  - iirc, tha tpage used to have more info on it in the past, but  would have been for XP12:47
Hobbseea google search may provide more info, though12:48
s0u][ightHobbsee found a lot about xp and stuff12:49
s0u][ightbot nothin' i consider up to date12:49
cjwatsons0u][ight: I consider it a bug that the installer didn't detect your recovery partition and add a boot entry to the grub configuration to let you boot insinto it12:50
cjwatsons0u][ight: not that I necessarily know how to do this in your case12:51
cjwatsonbut I know we do this in some cases12:51
cjwatsonso be careful about generalising from the failure in your case to say that it breaks for everyone, because I don't think that's true :)12:51
s0u][ightcjwatson no it detects but the rescue partition doesn't work that way12:52
s0u][ightfirst an application in the windows vista environment has to know that you want to recover12:52
cjwatsonif the windows bootloader can boot into the recovery partition, so could grub12:54
cjwatsonwe just need to figure out how12:54
s0u][ightcjwatson booting isn't a problem12:54
s0u][ightit boots into the rescue partition fine12:54
s0u][ightthe app that makes the boot crashes12:55
s0u][ighttelling rescue fails12:55
cjwatsonthe fact that they happen to implement this by way of an application doesn't mean that that application is required12:55
s0u][ighthmm, actually i only tryed booting into 1 rescue partition12:56
s0u][ightbut i have 2 partitions that work together afaik12:56
s0u][ightnever tryed booting into the other one12:56
s0u][ightmaybe that way it'll work12:56
s0u][ightbut got to go now, (friday prayer) laters all ;)12:57

arandValidation of a pkg upload to -proposed, how long does that normally take? And is it especially busy currently with 9.10 in parallell?14:12
cjwatsonbwright: that's just part of coreutils itself - it's not a system facility14:23
cjwatsonbwright: at least not on our system. I think it might be a VMS function or something used for compatibility14:24
cjwatsonbwright: see src/system.h14:24
bwrightcjwatson, Thanks.14:25
cjwatsonthe comments suggest that it handled redirection and wildcard expansion on VMS, where the program had to take care of that itself rather than having the shell do it14:27
tseliotcjwatson: do transitional packages need to have Section: oldlibs in debian/control or does that affect only libraries?14:36
tseliotjust to be sure14:37
slangasektseliot: it's normally only used for actual libraries, not arbitrary transitional packages14:38
slangasek"oldlibs" implies "libs we keep around because third-party software needs it", not "transitional packages"14:38

gigabytesI saw the wiki pages about the hardware support for macbooks. Specifically for my model there are some piece of hardware that need manual configuration, or to install additional packages from the external mactel repository. Are those packages planned to be included in the next ubuntu release?22:14
loic-mgigabytes: you can check if some packages are in good way to be included in next release by checking if there's at least a needs-packaging bug open in launchpad, and see how far it has gone (including checking on REVU if the package has been submitted, and if the submitter has been responsive to input, and if not take charge yourself for the packages you're interested in)22:25
loic-mIf there's no bug in Launchpad and the package isn't in Karmic yet, it's your responsibility to at least fill a needs-packaging bug, else nobody knows what's needed ;)22:26
gigabytesok22:27
gigabytesloic-m: so I file this bug on launchpad, the community "knows" that the package is needed to make ubuntu work on that hardware model, and then if the package is stable and actively mainteined by someone, it will be included?22:27
=== janito_ is now known as joaopinto
loic-mgigabytes: you first check nobody's working on it by checking if a bug is open in Launchpad, and if not you fill the bug. You can also check in Debian and fill another bug in Debian (RFP - request for packaging)22:29
gigabytesloic-m: other than packages, there are some manual workarounds to do, like adding entries in /etc/modules or in the modules blacklist. Another manual setting to do is the synaptic trackpad configuration. How can I help to make those things done automatically?22:29
loic-mgigabytes: then considering the huge number of progrrams people would like packaged and the really low number of people actually willing to package them, it might be faster to learn how to do it yourself and start working on it ;) else it can take years22:30

gigabytesloic-m: ok22:32
loic-mgigabytes: the fact some packages are on launchpad doesn't mean the packager is doing any work to see them included, nor that they are good enough to be included in their actual state22:32
gigabytesok22:33
loic-m(copyright issues, bad packaging, etc...)22:33
gigabytesloic-m: can't I simply file a bug like "those things are not automatically recognized by the default ubuntu install" and point to that wiki page?22:33
loic-mthen for configuration issues and tweaks, the easiest is if the bug is reported upstream and the fix gets included upstream, else you can get involved with the respective teams (kernel, ubuntu-x, etc..)22:34
loic-mgigabytes: no, because there's thousands of wiki pages and only like 2 or 3 people actually able to fix the bugs on each team (and they already have enough work with bugs people care enough to fill properly and help them for testing, etc)22:35
gigabytesok22:36
gigabytesit makes sense :D22:36
gigabytesloic-m: thank you22:36
loic-mgigabytes: you're welcome. The idea is that there's about zero chance anything gets fixed unless it gets reported properly, and then there's so much already to do that doing a good job communicating and pre-processing the info can help reduce the delay it gets fixed from a few years to one or two years only ;)22:38
gigabyteseheh22:39
gigabytesI hope It won't take two years to fix those things22:39
gigabytesI hope I could cleanly install ubuntu on my laptop at least in 10.422:40
gigabytesthank you22:40
loic-mgigabytes: and don't forget to nicely ask Apple if they could be nicer with Linux by using less proprietary hardware and working with distributions/upstreams so their hardware can actually work in Linux22:43
StevenKloic-m: HA HA22:44
loic-mStevenK: I was actually tempted by MBP 13' before I read that page on the wiki ;D22:45
loic-mThat and their obstination to put mirrors where you'd expect a screen22:45
gigabytesloic-m: well that's another point22:46
gigabytesapple doesn't gain anything from linux working well on their machines22:46
gigabytesso i don't think they'll change their strategy in this area..22:46
loic-mgigabytes: as long as Linux users keep buying their hw they won't gain anything working with Linux :P22:47
loic-mgigabytes: but even if you send the letter after you've bought it, it's still better than nothing. Tell them your laptop is as usefull as a brick, even though it's an nice looking brick.22:49
gigabytesloic-m: the point is that its untrue, at least for me..22:54
gigabytesI use OSX for the daily work22:54
gigabytesso my laptop is a lot useful22:54
gigabyteslinux is more an hobby...22:54
gigabytesso I can't send those kind of letters..22:54
