AluminSo, I changed "Compositing type" from XRender to OpenGL under "System Settings -> Desktop Effects -> Advanced", and I get this error: Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options.  Settings will be reverted to their previous values.  Check your X configuration.  You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the compositing type.00:07
Alumin(that last bit gave me a laugh :p)00:07
AluminI'm using the KDE 4.2.2 packages that came with the distro (Kubuntu 9.04), as well as the default "radeon" driver that Kubuntu installed00:08
corheh00:08
tsimpsonyou need the proprietary ATI driver for accelerated 3D00:08
tsimpson!ati00:08
ubottuFor Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto00:08
corit's unusual, at least in my experience, that OpenGL would fail, and Xrender work00:09
Alumintsimpson: fglrx?00:09
tsimpsonAlumin: yes00:09
Aluminhmm00:09
tsimpsonOpenGL uses hardware, XRender uses software00:10
AluminOK...the "desktop effect" I really wanted was real transparency, and that does work with XRender, so I may elect to not install it and forego the other effects...trying to run as "pure" of a system as possible00:10
Aluminbut thanks for the info, it's good to know that that's the issue and not some kind of configuration b0rk :)00:10
tsimpsonit's always a trade-off00:10
tsimpsonfreedom Vs functionality00:11
tsimpson(in hardware anyway)00:11

Aluminnot on mine :)01:56
ign0ramusAlumin, i wonder if the kde 4.3 repos brought this in...01:57
Aluminyou can check that with "apt-cache policy firefox"01:57
Aluminsee where it got your currently-installed "firefox" package from01:57
ign0ramusAlumin, Aha! " 500 http://ppa.launchpad.net jaunty/main Packages"01:58
Dragnslcrign0ramus- sure you're on 9.04? I have the backports PPA, and "firefox" is still 3.0.1301:58
ign0ramusDragnslcr, positive.01:58
Aluminwtf is ppa heh01:58
DragnslcrPersonal Package Archive01:58
ign0ramusAlumin, personal packa01:58
ign0ramus^ yeah01:58
DragnslcrThey're used for stuff that isn't officially supported01:59
ign0ramusDragnslcr, "apt-cache policy firefox" reports that line for firefox-3.501:59
Aluminoh...so each Ubuntu dev has a subdirectory?01:59
ign0ramusDragnslcr, for 3.0.13, the line is: "500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty-updates/main Packages"01:59
DragnslcrYeah, check your sources list01:59
DragnslcrAlumin- dunno if they all do, but they all could if they wanted02:00
ign0ramusDragnslcr, can I safely remove that PPA and now officially have KDE 4.3?02:00
DragnslcrIf the only extra repository you have is backports for KDE 4.3, "firefox" should be 3.0.1302:01
ign0ramusDragnslcr, i also have "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main"02:02
=== nick is now known as Guest80959
ign0ramusDragnslcr, well, removing the two ppa's took care of the Shiretoko issue, and it didn't remove any kde base packages, so I think I'm in the clear here02:05
ign0ramusDragnslcr, so I assume that KDE 4.3 is now in the supported repos?02:05
milo__please hw can i change the desktop or screen resolution. Things are all big and i dn't like it02:06
ign0ramusmilo__, in System Settings or using xrandr02:06
milo__ignOramus: thanks; im there but i can't find the exact place :(02:10
Dragnslcrign0ramus- no, 4.3 is still only in the backports PPA02:10
ign0ramusDragnslcr, yeah, was reading... I am adding the backports PPA *only* (the one listed on the Kubuntu homepage)02:10
DragnslcrI have the same PPA as you, so the problem must have been something else02:11
DragnslcrMaybe just an outdated cache02:11
milo__ignOramus: what am i supposed to do once i have typed xrandr?02:11
ign0ramusDragnslcr, no, but I also had the "jaunty-updates" PPA, not just the backports PPA02:12
ign0ramus!resolution | milo__02:12
ubottumilo__: The X Window System is the part of your system that's responsible for graphical output. To restart your X, type « sudo /etc/init.d/?dm restart » in a console - To fix screen resolution or other X problems: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution02:12
ign0ramusDragnslcr, err, I mean "http://ppa.launchpad.net jaunty/main Packages" - that was the repo pulling in Firefox 3.5 (Shiretoko)02:14
ign0ramusDragnslcr, removing that but keeping the Backports seems to be my fix. Thanks.02:15

Mamarokbut it would be better to report it to https://bugs.kde.org, as this is most likely a Qt problem10:06
vistakilleri have this bug with kde 4.310:06
vistakillerhttp://osdir.com/ml/kde-bugs-dist/2009-08/msg01103.html10:06
vistakilleri will report and to launchpad i think..10:06
tsimpsonreporting it to LP let's us get more info, then send upstream10:07
tsimpsonbesides, KDE are not responsible for Qt10:07
Mamaroktsimpson: well, I don't see bugs coming upstream that often, so reporting it upstream is much better, if it is a packaging issue, we send it downstream :)10:08
tsimpsonMamarok: all the more reason to report to LP first :)10:08
Mamarokand it's quite easy to do: https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=dolphin (in this case, else replace the product name)10:08
Mamaroktsimpson: if you think so... If I weren't subscribed to the Amarok bugs in Launchpad, I would never ever see something coming upstream TBH10:09

Mamarokeven if that has improved lately10:10
tsimpsonMamarok: I know we send reports upstream, as LP emails me about it :p10:10

Mamarokyep, same on our side10:11

mchk0123hi everybody11:38
mchk0123i've got a stupid question about daemon and kde ...11:39
theadminmchk0123, ask away11:39
mchk0123is there any GUI for KDE to deal with Linux daemon startup11:39
mchk0123I found no infos in Kubuntu website about it11:39
mchk0123I mean, you know ftpd, nntpd, apache, autostart daemons11:40
theadminmvhk0123, there was something. Somewhere in settings11:41
mchk0123theadmin, ... you think under KDE Config Control Panels, there is something11:43
theadminmvhk0123, there is something like that in system settings->Advanced->Service Manager. Is that it?11:43
mchk0123not completly, this one deal only with KDE daemons, not pure Linux ones11:44
theadminmchk0123, ah, got it... Then i don't know, sorry11:44
mchk0123for example to restart apache I can type a command like /etc/init.d/apache restart11:44
theadminGuess you can only do it via Konsole then11:45
mchk0123really ?, ok ...11:45
theadminmaybe there is some GUI11:46
theadminI'll try to google around11:46
mchk0123all the way, a GUI is only a help, not a critical feature11:46
mchk0123google -> I spend some time, find nothing for KDE11:47
mchk0123but Gnome has something included in Yast11:47
theadmin...it brings up Daemon Tools :D not anything even close.11:47
mchk0123arg Deamon Tools, is a CDROM faker for Windows XP11:47
theadminYeah11:47
mchk0123nevermind, to keep going on this problem11:48
mchk0123*don't11:48
mchk0123perhaps I will personnaly make a Qt/KDE GUI for this, I have some experience on it11:48
mchk0123and it's doesn't seems to be too complicated11:49
theadminyeah, technically, it's a press button->execute command in shell thing11:50
mchk0123+ scan & parse file to retreive configurated deamon list11:50
mchk0123the must difficult part will be icon making ;-)11:51
theadmin=D why not making a text-only gui :D11:51
mchk0123sure, a text-only gui, but in BW for handling all kind only Linux consoles11:52

=== nick is now known as Guest95440
=== Guest95440 is now known as nick4385
theadminm0u5e why would you need that. Your desktop will then be empty, since everything on it are widgets.12:16
m0u5ei like my wallpaper? its kinda annoying that i see things in the background12:16
theadminbsaser, just insert your boot CD when booting. Also, set CD as primary boot in bios (usually, you can access bios by pressing del, escape, f2 or something like that when booting)12:17
homytheadmin: even if I start systemsettings with "kdesudo systemsettings" the "Defaults" and "Reset" buttons are greyed out.12:17
m0u5etheadmin: so do you know of a way to do it? :)12:17
Mamarokm0u5e: then make another activity without widgets12:17
theadminm0u5e, that is a good idea :D... but otherwise i dunno12:18
Mamarokand add the activity swithcher widget to the panel12:18
Mamarok-h12:18
theadminMamarok: -h?12:18
Mamaroktheadmin: I made a typo :)12:19
Mamarokswithcher12:19
homym0u5e: it is possible to have a different set of widgets on the dashboard and the desktop - this is probably what you want.12:19
krosonhi again12:20
krosondoes ubuntu or kubuntu do kernel upgrades by default?12:20
krosonwith update managers?12:20
krosonor just with dist-upgrade?12:20
m0u5ehomy: well i want them all to be on my desktop, just not visible unless i toggle them12:20
homym0u5e: to configure that, select zoom out in the cashew and then select "configure plasma"12:20
homyThe you can zoom back in on your current activity.12:21
homym0u5e: just put all your widgets on your dashboard then and leave your desktop empty, you'll have your desired behavior then.12:21
m0u5ehomy: huh, i'll take a look at it... sorry im not too familiar with how activities work yet :(12:22
homym0u5e: you don't need activies for that.12:22
homym0u5e: Just click "zoom out" in the cashew. Then, at the top left, choose "Configure plasma" and select separate dashboard thingy. Then, zoom in by clicking the zoom in button in the bottom left of the desktop12:23
m0u5ehomy: sorry i'm a little lost, so what I would like is for my widgets to be hidden unless "toggled" by a shortcut key, kinda like how the widgets come to the front when you press ctrl+f1212:24
m0u5ehomy: i don't see a "configure plasma" button on the top left?12:24
homym0u5e: yeah, you just add all your widgets to the dashboard which will only be shown with ctrl-f12 and leave your desktop empty.12:24
homym0u5e: did you zoom out using the cashew?12:24
m0u5ehomy: OH, you're asking me to add it while zoomed out, and so it wont actually show up unless i hit ctrl+f12?12:25
homym0u5e: yeah, first you have to configure that. To do that, you have to be zoomed out.12:26
homySo, select zoom out in the cashew and choose "configure plasma"12:26
homythen, choose "separate dashboard"12:26
homythen, zoom back in on your desktop using the zoom in button.12:27
m0u5eokay the only options i have while zoomed out are "add widgets" "add activity" "zoom in" zoom out" "plasma workplace" and "folder view settings"12:27
homym0u5e: oh, do you still have kde 4.2?12:27
m0u5eno kde 4.3 :X12:27
homym0u5e: I'll do a screenshot for you.12:27
m0u5eits kinda weird though, since i have it installed with gnome, not everything is working like it should...12:28
theadminby the way, Kubuntu works incredibly slow when i zoom out. What could cause that.12:28
m0u5etheadmin: me too12:28
m0u5ehomy: i'm probably going to do a fresh install in the near future, maybe ill try it again when i have a clean install :D12:28
homym0u5e: http://imagebin.ca/view/OGR_4TY.html12:29
kaddihi, is there anyone familiar with widgets and kubuntu who might help me? (I'm typing the question right now)12:30
m0u5ehomy: yeah that thing doesnt appear for me :X12:30
m0u5eoh btw, is there a way to configure the kicker for an "icon" view? rather than an icon with the name of my running app?12:31
homym0u5e: oh! maybe the keyboard shortcut "Alt-C" works for you?12:31
m0u5ehomy it unfortunately does not :(12:31
* Mamarok waits for kaddi's question12:32
homym0u5e: are you sure you have kde 4.3?12:32
kaddiI'm using the widget fancytasks and i would like to change the background, I wrote to the author who told me to modify fancytasks.svg by exporting the relevant item from inkscape, modify it in gimp and reimport it. I did that, and replaced the old fancytasks.svg with the modified one. I restarted the x-server but I still get the old background and not the modified one I wanted to use12:32
kaddiI am a total noob at graphics and at widgets, so I assume I missed a step somewhere, but I don't know which one12:33
Mamarokkaddi: where does fancytasks come from, kde-apps.org? I never heard of12:33
m0u5eyeah... i used the ppa from here http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu12:33
kaddiMamarok kde-look.org12:33
m0u5etheres like a bunch of packages that kinda got messed up though, so i wouldn't be surprised if it's not a complete installation12:33
Mamarokkaddi: well, then you should check in the KDE techbase for more information, as these are third party applications. Or you ask the author again12:34
Mamarokhttp://techbase.kde.org12:34
m0u5ehomy: like i said, i'm going to try a clean installation when i have more time :)12:34

Mamarokm0u5e: 4.0 was never intended for users, it was a developer snapshot...12:37
m0u5eMamarok: yeah, i read that after i already tried it... so i figured i'd wait a whiel and come back12:38
homym0u5e: maybe it'll work then :)12:38

vals_kubuntuhello all. I'm not exactly a linux newbie, but I'm quite stymied by the kubuntu 9.04 install process. I'm trying to install the thing on this laptop, but as soon as the installer goes past the keyboard selection, right after the progress dialog about checking partitions and file system, nothing happens15:35
CaliostroMb, someone have experience in assignign new keys in the kubuntu? I know keycodes of this buttons...15:35
vals_kubuntuthis is the point where the partition manager should come up, I assume, but for some reason it does NOT come up. I can see the partman and parted_server running in the background, but the actual UI window that should come up does not appear. I can cancel the installation process, of course, but this is not exactly what I want to do15:36
vals_kubuntuso I googled around and I found a number of launchpad bugs that seem to apply to this version of the installer, most of them fixed for future releases. the question is: is there a way to upgrade THIS installer, or do I have to burn a new image to get the stupid thing to install?15:37

alidSevis: Is there any way to sync these two together, such that when I push the button to decrease the volume on my laptop, both of them turn down together?23:46

NoviceSevis: no clue fresh install just deleted my bar and need it back23:47
SevisIs your desktop completely the same everywhere? Change the wallpaper if it isn't completely clear.23:47

SevisNovice: Set the wallpaper to a plain white, and then run 'touch ~/Desktop/test'23:49
alidSevis: And by the way, the system beep volume can be adjusted by Master, regardless of whatever I have on PCM.23:50
SevisAlid: O_o Does your PCM affect other sounds? Very high PCM should make it sound like there's a disturbance.23:51
alidSevis: Master affects all sounds; PCM is just the standard sounds come out of the media players, etc. But sometimes the sound come out of some applications don't care about the level of PCM, and they just listen to Master degree (like system beep, and some embedded sounds within web pages)23:53
NoviceSevis: touch command not found23:54
SevisAlid: Then my old advice stands - put PCM to a reasonable level (70% or so), and just adjust master when necessary.23:54
SevisNovice: Erm. O.o One second.23:55
SevisNovice: Has that computer got internet?23:55
NoviceSevis: yes23:56
alidSevis: I wish I could. My hardware volume control panel on my laptop that controls turing the volum up, down and mute just work with PCM. How can I change it so that it adjusts Master?23:57
alidSevis: I mean, when I try to turn the volume down using buttons on my laptop, it adjusts PCM, instead of Master.23:58
SevisNovice: Can't find what package touch should be in, sorry. Use mkdir instead, please.23:58
SevisAlid: Have you checked the shortcuts config?23:58
