avihayb!ndis00:12
ubottuWireless documentation, including how-to guides and troubleshooting information, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs00:12

ner0x?00:12
avihaybwell, to install a win modem, you need to use ndiswrapper00:13
avihaybor so I've come tp belive...00:14
ner0xYou can use ndiswrapper to wrap around the drivers?00:18
ner0xIt's not a wireless care, it's an actual pci phone line modem.00:18
avihaybyes, I belive it works for winmodems. wikipedia claims it's for wireless drivers00:18
Dragnslcr!winmodem | ner0x00:19
ubottuner0x: You want to connect via dial-up? Read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto00:19
ner0xNot connect, fax.00:21
ner0xBut if I can get the modem working it would be a great success.00:21
mieemanhello, how to configure dolphin to use double click when opening files/folder?00:22
Dragnslcrmieeman- should be somewhere in System Settings -> Keyboard & Mouse00:23
Dragnslcrmieeman- it isn't a Dolphin setting, it's a common setting used throughout KDE00:23
mieemanthanks for that00:25

donnybrascoI currently have my laptop configured (as primary) with a secondary flatscreen - AWN keeps popping up on the secondary monitor, but my panel is on the laptop display.00:50

kisistenhi, kde has a window called "software updates" in kubuntu. When I click to apply updates, it displays the updates available and performs package scan. When I hit "Apply updates" it freezes up01:06
SerpardumWhat is the kde graphics program again?  I thought it was installed by default but I guess not.  Can't remember the name though to apt get it01:07
alesanhow do I install KDE4.3? I have added the repository but which package I have to install?01:12
SevisAlesan - have you tried update & upgrade?01:13
alesanSevis, no, I have just followed the link on the topic01:13
alesanhttp://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.301:13
alesanI have added that repository deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu jaunty main01:13
alesanand the repository key01:13
alesannow, shall I just install kubuntu-desktop?01:13
SevisJust try apt-get update then apt-get upgrade01:14
alesanSevis, I do not have kde 4 installed01:14
alesando not make assumptions01:14
alesanI just have kde3 (that I use all the time) and gnome01:15
SevisWhich distribution and version have you got?01:15
alesanubuntu 9.04 why?01:16
avihaybhow did you get kde 3 installed in 9.04?01:16
alesanfollowing the instructions on this channel01:17
SevisWell, seeing as KDE3 isn't included as default in 9.04, I'm not quite sure, but you can try kubuntu-desktop01:17
alesanI added a special repository and that had kde301:17
alesanlet me tell you the kde3 repo01:17
SevisOn the other hand, there's kubuntu-kde4-desktop, that might help.01:17

avihayblet me say it in japanease in a way that you'll understand, since you seem to understand english: senque ale-san01:20
Serpardumgimp?  I think that's it01:21
avihaybwell, as much as my sensei toldm, you are correct sev. she also says that you can drop the arigato, since it's a common expression01:22
avihaybtoldm->told me01:22
SevisErrr... Drop the arigato? So just domo ale-san? Doesn't sound quite right, seeing as arigato is the "thank". Ah well, I guess she knows better O.o01:24

GnuSebHello there, i'm trying to install the UNR version on my laptop from a flashdrive but the boot manager doesnt list the usb as a bootable option it only lists dvd/cd rom drive, i was wondering if i burn the image of the UNR onto a dvd will it work?01:48
alesanhow do I add the "quick app launcher" widget to the task bar?01:51
GnuSebcan i partition for dual booting from wubi, leaving windows untouched?01:56
SevisWubi automatically does this, Gnuseb.01:57
GnuSebso i won't have to reinstall windows afterward or repartition?01:57
GnuSebjust run wubi.exe from the flashdrive?01:57
alesanhow do I move a widget in the task bar? I wantr to put a specific widget tothe left01:58
DragnslcrGnuSeb- Wubi creates a disk image on the Windows file system, then adds an entry in the Windows boot loader to boot Ubuntu from that disk image02:00
DragnslcrI guess you could think of it as a virtual partition within the Windows partition02:00
GnuSebi clicked on wubi(which is on the flashdrive) and nothing happened02:00
GnuSebit won't run or something02:00
GnuSebi tried booting from the usb but the boot manager of my laptop only had the dvd/cd drive and hard drive options02:01
GnuSebit didn't list usb as a bootable option02:01
DragnslcrYou wouldn't boot from a USB drive with Wubi on it02:01
DragnslcrYou run the executable normally. I don't know why it wouldn't run from a USB drive though02:01
GnuSebi downloaded the unr version then checked hash sum then i used the disk image writer02:02
DragnslcrYou could try checking the process list to see if wubi.exe is running02:02
GnuSebwhen i open the flashdrive it shows a bunch of folders and wubi at thebottom02:02
GnuSebi did it doesnt show it as running02:02
DragnslcrTry copying the Wubi executable to a hard drive and running it from there02:02
DragnslcrI haven't used it in a while, but it was pretty easy last time I did02:03
GnuSebubuntu-9.04-netbook-remix-1386.img is the filei have02:06
GnuSebif i burn that onto a dvd will it work as a bootable?02:06
avihaybwait, doesn't it come as an iso?02:09
GnuSebno, look, http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloading?release=unr-newest&mirror=ftp%3A%2F%2Freleases.ubuntu.com.ba%2Fubuntu%2Freleases%2F&arch=i38602:10
DragnslcrThat's only for running Ubuntu directly from the USB drive without doing a normal installation02:12
GnuSebtha'ts what i intended doing02:13
GnuSebbut then when i triedto boot fromthe usb02:13
GnuSebthe bootmanager wouldn't show the option of booting from it02:13
GnuSebit only showed dvdcd rom or hard drive as bootables02:13
avihaybit's ok, wubi will use the windows bootloader02:14
avihaybthe windows bootloader is placed on your first hdd02:14
DragnslcrI don't think Wubi will work with a USB disk image02:14
avihaybwell, forget what I said02:14
DragnslcrWubi is meant to do a normal Ubuntu install to a virtual disk on the Windows partition02:15
SevisYep. Wubi does not remove the Windows install, you cannot use it to replace Windows.02:15
DragnslcrI can't imagine why anything new enough to warrant using UNR wouldn't be able to boot from USB though02:15
GnuSebwhat i want to do is install from a flashdrive, and partition for dual booting, i don't have cds to burn the iso files only dvd-r's02:16
avihaybI don't think that the wubi installation will be able to use the usb drive without loading a driver for it02:16
DragnslcrWubi can use a .iso file to install from02:16
DragnslcrYou don't need to burn the .iso to a real disc02:16
SevisWubi can probably see USB, but what of it?02:17
SevisGnuSeb,  you can just make your Windows partition smaller, then install them side by side. Should work fine.02:17
GnuSebi apologize02:18
GnuSebbut i am getting confused02:18
alesankde 4.3 is a total waste of time :(02:18
GnuSebthis i have just done: reformated my flash drive02:18
alesanback to kde 3 :(02:18
GnuSeband started downloading the iso for the standard desktop02:18
GnuSebremember i only have dvds to burn, and a flash drive02:19
GnuSebi'm all ears02:19
SevisGnuSeb - have you got a Live Boot DVD going?02:19
DragnslcrAs far as I know, Wubi can just install from a .iso file02:19
SevisYes, it can.02:20
DragnslcrDunno why there isn't a UNR .iso02:20
SevisAnd you can also make a live boot USB from a .iso file.02:20
GnuSebSevis, i have just started downloading the iso file02:20
avihaybI think you can create a cd sized partition, dump the iso's content there, boot from it, repertition and install linux, and remove the partition. I'd rather go to the shop and buy a cd02:20
GnuSebthis is exactly what i did02:21
GnuSebhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromImgFiles02:21
SevisErrr... GnuSeb, why not just use the creation utility to make a live boot USB?02:22
DragnslcrThat's for install from a USB drive, which I think requires its own partition02:22
GnuSebwhat creation utility?02:22
SevisGnuSeb - you want a dual boot?02:22
GnuSeband yes i wanted to install from a usb drive because i don't ahve cds only dvds and a flashdrive02:22
GnuSebso i formatted the flashdrive to fat3202:22
GnuSeband yes i want a dual boot02:23
SevisThere's a Live Boot USB creation utility.02:23
SevisGnuSeb, you know you can get live boot DVDs, right?02:23
GnuSebi am on a really slow connection, it's downloading the iso, i already have the .img file for the  unr, and no i didn't know that, what do i have to do for that?02:23
kub1"kdebase" is not installed on my recently installed KU 904 with todays apt-update.  Shouldn't it be???02:24
DragnslcrIf you try to install from a USB drive, you'll have to repartition your hard drive02:24
GnuSebi'd bemost grateful if you could help me install the unr from the flashdrive whilst leaving windows intact on a different partition for dual booting02:24
DragnslcrI don't think Wubi can install from USB02:24
SevisIt's on the FTP... Somewhere.02:24
SevisWubi is included on liveboot USBs, but you need to boot into Windows.02:24
GnuSebi tried booting from the usb, boot manager didn't show an option for that02:25
GnuSebtried clicking on wubi opening the usb from windows02:25
GnuSebwubi wouldn't run02:25
kub1Is there a KU developers irc channel?02:26
DragnslcrI think it's #kubuntu-devel02:27
kub1Dragnslcr: thx, & do you know this:,02:27
kub1"kdebase" is not installed on my recently installed KU 904 with todays apt-update.  Shouldn't it be???02:28
DragnslcrI dunno, it's installed for me, but it looks like it may just be a metapackage02:28
GnuSebDragnslcr, what do you recomend i do?02:30
GnuSebhow can i make the bootable img usb work02:30
kub1apt-get -s install kdebase shows: The following new packages will be installed: kappfinder kdebase kwrite02:30
avihaybthis is in the right direction: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=26606802:30
Pliskin_kub1 : kdebase is just a meta-package02:31
Pliskin_it depends on some packages not installed by kubuntu, so the meta-package is not installed either02:31
Pliskin_kub1 : a meta-package is a "fake" package that depend on other packages02:32
avihaybok, this seems perfect for the job: http://www.megaleecher.net/Boot_USB_Without_Motherboard_Support02:33
Pliskin_kub1 : but the important packages which kdebase depends on are installed (konqueror...etc) so don't worry, it's normal02:34
kub1Pliskin_: so, under what circumstances would it be appropriate or useful to install, or have installed, kdebase?02:34
Pliskin_they don't install everything on kubuntu because of the lack of space in a CD02:34
kub1Pliskin_: ie, what is the purpose of this very "basically named" package?02:34
Pliskin_kub1 : if you want "all" the apps of kdebase02:34
Pliskin_but someare useless so kubuntu devs don't install them by default02:35
GnuSebcan i use a dvd insteadof a cd and burn the iso onto it?02:35
kub1Pliskin_: well, shouldn't a basic install include "all" of the kde base applications??02:35
GnuSebas in, will it work02:35
Pliskin_to keep space02:35
Pliskin_kub1 : kubuntu avoid duplicated softwares, there is already kate, so why installing kwrite ?02:35
Pliskin_kappfinder is pretty useless02:36
Pliskin_etc...02:36
GnuSebwhat if i burn the img for the usb02:36
Pliskin_but you can install them if you want02:36
GnuSebonto a dvd02:36
GnuSeband try to boot from that?02:36
Pliskin_they're just not ther by default02:36
GnuSebsince my system doens't list usb as a bootable option02:36
GnuSebwill that work?02:36
kub1Pliskin_: well, so you're saying they are basically of little value, therfore don't bother istalling it?  If so, why does it have such a "basic" (ie, read 'essential') name?  Shouldn't the kde or KU dev's just get rid of it if it is useless, & let those useless things be some kind of optional stuff?02:37
Pliskin_kub1 : it's an upstream issue02:38
Pliskin_KDE != Kubuntu02:38
Pliskin_Kubuntu find them useless, but KDE ships them in kdebase02:38
kub1Pliskin_: thx, I'll ask in #kde :)02:39
Pliskin_the meta-packages respect the "arboressence" (is it an english word ?) of KDE SVN02:39
Pliskin_that's why, kub102:40
kub1Anyone know when KU904 will get the functionality like in adept, the gui apt mgr in KU 804? ie, something better than KPackageKit?02:46
GnuSebI GOT A CDR!02:47
GnuSebnow i'll just burn the .img of the unr onto the cdr02:47
GnuSeband i'll boot from that02:47
GnuSebswiss effing watch...haxor02:47
Dragnslcrkub1- you'll have to be more specific about what functionality you're missing02:47
GnuSebthe disk imager won't read the cdr as a usb to write the img onto it02:48
GnuSeb...02:48
GnuSebok, now i am downloading the .iso02:50
GnuSeband it says it will take five hours02:51
GnuSebthat's a nuissance02:51
kub1Dragnslcr: well, just about all the functionality in Adept is lacking in KPK - KPK has almost nothing Adept has - searching, aspects of packages, package categories & groupings, ... - so, any idea when KU/KDE4 will have that functionality - or should i ask on #kde??02:52

mizerydeariaYay!  Removing all traces of packages containing "compiz" seems to have fixed my issue.04:33
DaskreeCHmizerydearia: Whee04:33
mizerydeariabut, I have another issue.04:33
mizerydeariaWhen I click the menu, it doesn't appear as it should.  Instead I see a grid of dots... o_o04:34
DaskreeCHmizerydearia: what window manager are you using now?04:34
mizerydeariaWhat package is for the  menu?  Maybe I will reinstall it04:34
mizerydeariaDaskreeCH, KDE04:34
DaskreeCHYou mean kwin?04:34
mizerydeariaKubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope default04:34
mizerydeariayep, kwin04:34
mizerydeariaah, switching to classic menu style and it appears fine04:36
mizerydeariaBack to Kickoff menu style and it doesn't appear as it should04:36
mizerydeariaAfter removing all traces of compiz files, I rebooted, so it is a fresh environment.04:37
mizerydeariaAlthough, not entirely fresh, as it isn't working.  I imagine there is at least one process running that conflicts04:37
DaskreeCHmizerydearia: Probably just have some setting messed up for your kickoff04:38
mizerydeariaDaskreeCH, hmm, what kind of settings?04:39
DaskreeCHwait which process do you think is conflicting?04:39
mizerydeariaDaskreeCH, I'm not sure.  Let me get an update of `ps aux`04:40
mizerydearia`ps aux` http://pastebay.com/4015404:41
mizerydeariaMaybe I am missing a process?04:42
mizerydeariaBecause even when I try to click anywhere in the grid of very spaced out pixels that seemingly represent the menu that pops out, clicking upon it causes it to disappear with no further action04:43
mizerydeariaoh wait!  I found a pixel far at the top of the screen that reacted to a mouseover and when clicked started firefox04:43
mizerydeariaIt is the only pixels on the screen that I can click that launch anything, though...it's very strange04:44
mizerydeariaIirc, Firefox is the very first item (at top) in my favorites.04:44
mizerydeariaOh, Actually, I'm wrong.  I can start other programs, but I have to click on the exact pixels that are the grid of dots.  If I click in the spacious transparent areas, apparently it clicks the background/desktop and gets rid of the menu.04:45
mizerydeariaHow can I determine what wants to remove each of friendly-recovery startup-tasks system-services ubuntu-minimal upstart upstart-compat-sysv upstart-logd?04:53
mizerydeariaI am reinstalling from http://wiki.vpslink.com/OS_Template_Information:_Ubuntu_9.04_(Xen) [the best reference I could find showing a list of packages included in default of Kubuntu04:54
mizerydeariaBut it doesn't seem to be the exact same list as it is for Xen specifically, where I'm using Kubuntu 9.0404:54
DaskreeCHmizerydearia: I don't knwo what friendly-recovery is05:04
DaskreeCHYou want to keep upstart05:04
mizerydeariaDaskreeCH, Do I need any compiz apps?  I removed htem all.  Maybe one of them was needed?05:05
mizerydeariaI think I removed them all.  I'm still going throug a list of 1500+ apps that are installed05:05
DaskreeCHnope you don't even need a Window manager05:05

drgonzohello all07:37
drgonzoI just added the backports repo for jaunty to my sources list and did un upgrade of kubuntu. After reboot i used GDM to log into kde. It seemed like it was fine with the boot screen, but when KDE started the background was checkered with no image and nothing really opened. the kcontrol menu had no top bar and couldn't be more or scaled. I removed my ~/.kde*/ folders and now kde won't boot at all plasma just segfaults. and i get a black screen07:39

MekzholanHi, I've got trouble with the power management under 9.04 (pervious versions were ok):09:11
MekzholanIn the normal profile I never want to get a blank (black) screen after a too long idle time. So I changes my power management settings though the icon in the tool bar. suitI got an USB headset with inbuilt sound chip. When I connect it it shows up as it should and when I press 'Test' in the Sound system settings it plays a sound. However, even after pushing the priority of the device to #1 Flash Videos viewed in Firefox still forward the sound to my sound card. Is there a 'Make Default Device' option i'm missing?22:05
macothats probably just flash being incredibly stupid, as usual22:06
macoi know how to change the routing with pulseaudio, but all the kubuntu devs seem to hate pulseaudio :(22:07
maco(partially because there are no kde tools for it...just gnome ones)22:07
suitI thought so too, then I tried VLC. The sound device setting in VLC is still set to 'Default' so somewhere information has to be stored regarding to what the default device is. If I don't change 'Default' to 'USB Audio Device' in VLC it sends the data to the speakers, too22:09
suitI vaguely remember gnome being more non-cli-ninja-friendly there22:10
suitAs in: it got a big flashing SETDEFAULT button. :)22:10
macohehe22:12
corsuit, use vlc22:12
macocor: i think suit wants to use flash in the browser though...22:12
