jonah1980hey guys, how good is the alpha3, is it stable enough to use. kubuntu/ubuntu 9.04 on my eee pc 1101ha doesn't give me any wifi or ethernet and can't get ndiswrapper working etc, so thought'd i'd try +1 ??00:01
ericGkubuntu karmic is working great on my eee 1000ha using wicd for the wireless00:04
ericGits alot snappier in karmic because of the intel and kernel updates00:05
ericGit is an alpha though so it might not stay that way.00:06
danbhfivejonah1980: have you tried LBM?00:10
jonah1980ericG: ok so you think it might be ok to give a go? it won't wreck my machine or anything? also will wifi work or ethernet out of box?00:10
jonah1980lbm?00:10
danbhfivejonah1980: linux-backports-modules-jaunty-generic   install that00:11
jonah1980danbhfive: problem i had was i had no internet to try to install stuff from though00:11
danbhfivejonah1980: yeah, erm, I can't help you with that.  You could use a usb drive if you had one00:12
jonah1980danbhfive: haven't got anything like that i can use unfortunately, that's why i thought the alpha might be worth a shot00:13
jonah1980i tried ndiswrapper and a few things to no avail00:14
ericGyou can always try out the live cd and see if your stuff works00:14
ericGwhat wireless card is in the 1101ha?00:14
jonah1980ericG: atheros something or other, not sure actually, can't find much info00:15
jonah1980ericG: do you know if unetbootin shipped with kubuntu jaunty will put alpha 3 on if you select live_daily?00:18
=== funkyHat is now known as funkyCat
ericGno idea jonah1980, i donwloaded the kubunti karmic netbook iso and put it on my drive with unetbootin.00:20
jonah1980ericG, as this has an 11" screen will the netbook one still be ok, as on kubuntu release page it says optimised upto 10" netbooks...00:23
EagleScreenanyone is using karmic with home in ext4?00:29
bjsniderthere's nothing wrong with atheros support in jaunty00:29
jonah1980bjsnider: it didn't work for the 1101ha though, so something must have changed00:30
=== funkyCat is now known as funkyHat
bjsniderwhat OS does the thing ship with?00:31
jonah1980bjsnider: it came with xp which i had to get rid of immediately, i didn't even boot xp up, i just got a dongle out and put jaunty straight on the thing!00:34
jonah1980maybe that was a bad move as i don't have any internet on the thing!00:35
bjsnideris it supposed to be wireless-n or g?00:35
jonah1980but i'd rather have no connection than use microsoft haha00:35
jonah1980bjsnider: g00:35
bjsniderwell, ath5k is designed to run those chips00:35
bjsniderboot off a livecd00:36
jonah1980bjsnider: i think it's ath8k though...00:36
jonah1980bjsnider: or maybe something else...00:36
bjsniderath9k runs the wireless-n version00:36
bjsnideri'm talking about the driver name00:36
bjsnidernot the chip00:37
jonah1980bjsnider: to be honest i'm not sure what it uses, as i can't find anyone on google that has a 1101ha with linux on it...00:37
bjsniderdo you still have jaunty on it?00:39
jonah1980bjsnider: yeah, just creating the alpha 3 dongle to try, but i can give jaunty a go again if you know how to get it up?00:39
bjsnidereither will do00:40
jonah1980bjsnider: ok booted it up into jaunty...00:40
bjsnideropen up a terminal type lspci00:41
jonah1980bjsnider: ok i've got Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network adapter rev 0100:42
jonah1980bjsnider: and ethernet is attansic tech corp device 106200:42
bjsniderjonah1980, your atheros chip is supported by the ath9k driver00:45
bjsnidertype sudo modprobe ath9k00:45
jonah1980bjsnider: ok done that, now what do i do? no wifi is showing up still00:45
bjsnidertype iwconfig00:46
jonah1980bjsnider: ok it says lo no wireless connections and pan0 no wireless connections00:46
bjsniderwait, this is jaunty?00:46
bjsniderok, jaunty won't do it00:47
jonah1980bjsnider: yeah00:47
bjsniderwithout the lbm package00:47
bjsniderbut youcan't get it00:47
bjsniderso try karmic00:47
bjsniderkarmic should work00:47
bjsnideryou need a newer kernel than 2.6.2800:47
bjsniderkarmic has .3100:47
jonah1980bjsnider: jaunty won't? so is it easiier to install lbm on jaunty or do the karmic dongle?00:47
bjsniderit would be har dto install lbm without internet00:48
jonah1980bjsnider: ok karmic it is, thanks i'll install it now00:48
BluesKajwicd will work without having to upgrade to karmic00:48
bjsniderno00:48
bjsniderthe ath9k version he needs is not in the 2.6.28 kernel00:48
BluesKajI'm running 2.8 with jaunty and using wicd00:49
BluesKajon my laptop00:49
jonah1980bjsnider: thanks so much for the help, i'll fire up karmic now, so do i just type modprobe ath9k at konsole once done?00:49
bjsniderand you have an AR9285 atheros chip00:50
bjsniderno, it should be loaded automatically00:50
jonah1980bjsnider: ok00:50
BluesKajwhat's so special about that chip, artheros is artheros , no ?00:51
bjsniderBluesKaj, http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/ath9k#supported_chipsets00:51
johnjohn101hi, i was reading the release notes. Is HAL really being depreciated?00:51
BluesKajatheros00:51
bjsniderhal is being deprecated in favour of devicekit00:51
Pici!hal00:51
ubottuHal is in the process of being depreciated.  See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Halsectomy and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_abstraction_layer for more info.00:51
BluesKajok , back to tv00:52
johnjohn101will the halsectomy be more reliable?00:55
bjsniderif you read the wikipedia page on devicekit, it will be more clear00:56
johnjohn101thanks, it makes sense. I see that it's all new to linux00:59
Spirits-Sightwhen ever I try to run live cd I get a screen full of stuff and then it drops me to concel and it also says some thing about removing GDM guess session or some thing like this, I don't have a way to computer the screen as I only have this system.01:00
johnjohn101if i install alpha 4, can I keep uprading until final release or do I have to reinstall?01:02
TheInfinityjohnjohn101: you can upgrade, but alpha means it might destroy everything ;)01:06
TheInfinityso its you might have to reinstall if theres a bad bug01:06
johnjohn101i'm excited about 9.10, seems like a nice jump from 9.04.01:07
diverse_izzuehello. my screensaver never activates under karmic. anyone else experiencing that?01:11

skazi21101system going into console and grafic mode don`t work10:38
jonah1980hey guys, having a screen resolution problem and karmic doesn't seem to have an xorg.conf? i need to add a custom resolution in as my screen is all chunky looking... how can i do this for karmic/11:11
jonah1980?11:11
jonah1980thanks for any help...11:11
syn-ackX doesnt really rely on the config file anymore11:11
syn-ackjonah1980: more and more of the configuration is happening thru dbus and the like but you can still add your custom settings in the config file as long as they're valid11:12
jonah1980i think there should be an option in the display bit to do a custom res, would be a lot easier for many...11:12
syn-ackThere is, in the config file. :P11:13
syn-ackcheck out the config files manpage... iirc there still is one11:13
syn-ackjonah1980: now as for the exact syntax... I havent messed with it in so long I dont remember it right off hand so even I'd have to look it up11:14
jonah1980ok so can anyone guide me to add 1366 x 76811:14
syn-acknetbook?11:14
jonah1980yeah netbook11:14
jonah1980but it's 11" not 10...11:14
jonah1980it's the 1101ha eee11:14
syn-ackwouter2: isnt thtat what you have?11:15
jonah1980also my netbook edition has an annoying thing in the app bar with the desktop, i don't need the desktop to be minmiseable but can't turn it off... i've set it to desktop view, but it has it in the panel as if the desktop is "open" like a running app or something11:18
syn-ackjonah1980: I know hardly anything about UNR11:19
jonah1980syn-ack: do you know where this man page is and what config file i need to look at for the resolution?11:19
jonah1980is it in the dbus folder?11:19
syn-ackno11:20
syn-ackman 5 xorg.conf11:20
bazz-deehello11:21
jonah1980syn-ack: where's the man 5 folder?11:22
syn-acktype that at the terminal prompt11:22
jonah1980syn-ack: but there's no xorg anymore so i don't know what i'm looking for...11:24
bazz-deehey, anybody experienced crashes of the keyboard shortcut application?11:24
jonah1980syn-ack: when i type that it asks what manual page from that section i want...11:25
jonah1980hi does anyone please know how to change the resolution in karmic?11:27
skazi21101my noutbook boot in text mode? it can`t boot in grafic mode. what can i do to boot in grafic mode?11:29
skazi21101it says fglrx fail11:29
jonah1980syn-ack: hi, found this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1221654&highlight=karmic+resolution   but it doesn't make much sense to me, is there an easier way to alter screen res, like can i add a line in grub or something?11:35
syn-ackjonah1980: try this: in a terminal type sudo dpk-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg11:39
syn-ackjonah1980: pick your driver, then pick your resolutions11:39
syn-ackI cant believe I forgot about that11:39
jonah1980syn-ack: it says package x is not installed11:40
syn-ackhow did you install your system?11:41
jonah1980syn-ack: from the live-cd11:41
syn-ackJaunty liveCD or Karmic?11:41
jonah1980syn-ack: karmic11:41
syn-ackHrm11:41
syn-ackIm wondering if thats a bug... I havent installed via a kermic daily image yet....11:42
jonah1980syn-ack: seems karmic has a new way of doing things which doesn't include changing screen resolutions to the one you want..?11:42
syn-ackbull11:42
syn-ackubuntu is ubuntu as it is debian in many ways11:42
syn-ackjonah1980: is the command startx availible to you at the terminal prompt?11:43
jonah1980syn-ack: yeah it says it's already active11:43
syn-ackjonah1980: and did you type exactly this? sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg11:44
jonah1980syn-ack: hi just did it again and this time it just gave me another prompt, didn't as for a screen res etc, just another prompt but no error, so i must of spelt it wrong...11:45
syn-ackWhat you SHOULD get is a curses based screen11:45
jonah1980syn-ack: no just a new prompt at this end...11:46
syn-ackAnd you typed EXACTLY what I asked you?11:46
jonah1980syn-ack: yeah exact, even cut and pasted it11:47
syn-ackhrm11:47
jonah1980syn-ack: is it because karmic doesn't use xorg?11:47
syn-ackIt DOES use it11:47
syn-ackthats the point I've been trying to nail into you11:47
syn-ackIt works here even11:48
syn-ackjonah1980: Check for some installer bugs on Launchpad11:48
jonah1980syn-ack: its just when i do a sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf as i used to if ever had screen issues it just says file not found11:48
jonah1980but if i do locate xorg.conf, i get: /usr/share/man/man5/xorg.conf.5.gz11:49
syn-ackseriously check on Launchpad.... There may be some serious installer bugs11:49
sash_jonah1980:  ubuntu tries not to use the xorg.conf since hardy, i think. hal shall do the configuration11:50
syn-acksash_: right but he should be able to still add custom res's to it11:51
jonah1980sash, hal huh? so is there a config file for hal i can add the resolution to?11:51
syn-ackand thats not an ubuntu thing thats an x thing for the most part, SuSe's the same way11:51
syn-ackjonah1980: see, what I do is install Jaunty then run "sudo do-release-upgrade -d" to get Karmic installed11:52
jonah1980syn-ack: the issue i had though was i had no wifi or ethernet on new netbook so i jaunty wouldn't work, tried ndiswrapper and all sorts so installed karmic and wifi works and ethernet out of box, but now i cant change my screen res!11:53
syn-acksash_: AFAIK, if an xorg.conf is there, its going to parse it and add to what hal/dbus discovers11:53
sash_syn-ack:  xorg.conf is still read. i allways have it11:54
syn-ackright11:54
jonah1980but i don't have an xorg.conf file...11:54
syn-ackThats my point, and performing and dpkg-reconfigure to it will add those lines and such so he can have it11:54
syn-ackhowever, it sounds like whats going on is he's missing some important things and why? I dont know11:55
jonah1980so is there a way to install an xorg.conf file then?11:55
syn-ackjust touch it11:55
jonah1980syn-ack: can i apt-get install something that will put xorg.conf in for me?11:58
syn-ackYou're making this much more difficult than it really is11:58
jonah1980syn-ack: i know, but that's because i'm really stuck, sorry i just don't know how to change this resolution11:59
syn-ackjonah1980: "sudo touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf11:59
syn-ackwithout the quotes11:59
jonah1980syn-ack: ok done that but the file is empty, when i run dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg, it just gives me another prompt and the xorg.conf is still empty...12:01
sash_jonah1980:  then you will have to enter all the things _manually_ (google for syntax) and restart your xserver afaik12:01
jonah1980is there a way to install jaunty but with the backports in from the start, because i have no internet on jaunty on this machine - like a fedora respin type of thing, custom iso?12:01
sash_jonah1980:  if you dont have drivers for your network-card, you could also look for the drivers and patch your kernel. will have to do this, too, when i install lenny the next days.12:04
jonah1980aw what a stresser this is haha. i've created an xorg.conf then i tried Xorg -configure, but it did a segfault or something, and tried dkpg reconfigure thing and then had some stuff in xorg but when booted it said it couldn't find a screen, tried adding custom resolution in also but it wouldn't work. so deleted contents of xorg.conf and i'm back on but with a bad resolution again... can anyone give me something12:43
jonah1980 i can paste into xorg.conf that should work and is pretty standard that i can add resolutions to?12:43
jonah1980i also don't understand why sudo dpkg reconfigure phigh etc isn't giving me any options to choose display or antyhing, it doesn't seem to do anything and just gives me a prompt. can anyone please help change my resolution to 1366x768 in karmic?12:49
danbhfivejonah1980: still no net connection?12:55
jonah1980danbhfive: yeah got my connection now, but running karmic!12:56
jonah1980danbhfive: so thanks loads for your help, it worked out of box12:56
jonah1980danbhfive: but now it's the resolution on my screen, it's all stretched and horrible12:57
danbhfivejonah1980: yeah, I saw.  have you tried xrandr?12:57
jonah1980danbhfive: what's xrandr?12:57
danbhfivejonah1980: its a configuration util for screens, ie resolution12:58
jonah1980danbhfive: ah fantastic, so can i use it to change to 1366x768?12:59
jonah1980danbhfive: i just did xrandr at term and it says Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 76812:59
danbhfivejonah1980: yeah, its not detecting it13:00
jonah1980danbhfive: man that really sucks. i spent 3 hours last night and i've spent a couple today trying to get this flaming netbook using linux, what a pain in the rear, would help if i knew a bit more what i was doing but i feel like a zombie!13:01
danbhfivejonah1980: I know there are ways of forcing modes, but I have no experience13:01

danbhfivejonah1980: maybe: xrandr -s 1366x76813:04
jonah1980danbhfive: that doesnt seem to do anything, just gives me a prompt and when i type xrandr again it says same as before13:05
jonah1980danbhfive: the manual says it's something like this but i don't know if i should put s-video, lvds or what? xrandr --addmode S-video 1366x76813:07
danbhfivejonah1980: well, you don't want s-video, that is for s-video output13:08
danbhfivejonah1980: use VGA13:08
jonah1980danbhfive: ok will try it13:08
jonah1980danbhfive: it says cannot find output vga13:09
danbhfiveyeah, I think there is a way for it to tell you the names13:09
jonah1980danbhfive: i don't suppose you could have a look at xrandr man for me and see what command i may need to use please?13:10
jonah1980danbhfive, this is a minefield to me13:10
danbhfivejonah1980: I'm finding the man complicated13:10
danbhfivejonah1980: try the add mode without anything specified13:11
jonah1980danbhfive: that just shows me the man page...13:11
danbhfivejonah1980: o wait, I think I get it, can you pastebin the output of xrandr?13:12
jonah1980danbhfive: http://pastebin.ca/153042513:13
danbhfivejonah1980: try 'default'   I think that is the name of the output13:14
jonah1980danbhfive: that just gives me cannot find mode "1366x768"13:15
jonah1980danbhfive: this is the command i put xrandr --addmode default 1366x76813:15
danbhfivexrandr --output default --mode 1366x76813:16
jonah1980danbhfive: that gives me xrandr: cannot find mode 1366x76813:17
jonah1980danbhfive: this thing is a killer13:17
danbhfivejonah1980: it could just be a bug13:17
danbhfivejonah1980: did you install this side by side with jaunty?  or over jaunty?13:18
jonah1980danbhfive: just over top of jaunty from fresh as i had no wifi or ethernet in jaunty13:18
jonah1980danbhfive: screen res wasn;t good in jaunty either13:19
danbhfivejonah1980: yeah, your only option may be to file a bug report.  At least for me, I don't think I can help you13:19
jonah1980danbhfive: ok well thanks a lot for trying for me13:28

raphaHi!13:40
penguin42Hi13:40

BluesKajHello all13:55
penguin42Hi13:55
raphaJeruvy: no change after aptitude install'ing nvidia-glx-18013:56
penguin42rapha: Just checking; you get some display but it's mashed up - or you get no display ?13:58
raphamashed is an understatement13:58
raphai do get some ... red-pink-greenish vertical lines and the entire screen is blinking as if some gnome sat in there and kept turning the light off and on13:59
penguin42hmm - does it look like it's trying to display what it should and the monitor has switched to the right res?13:59
penguin42ah - so near to nothing13:59
raphabox isn't hung up or anything tho, can still get all the vc's13:59
raphayeah, definitely no screen problem but a graphics adaptor one14:00
raphaworking fine in winxp and 9.04 also14:00
Jeruvyrapha: you're probably going to need to modify the xorg.conf, I had modified mine, but I used the nvidia settings tool since I at least had working generic drivers.  I take it you have no X at all?14:03
raphaheheh14:05
raphano xorg.conf in karmic anymore :)14:05
penguin42you can put one in14:06
raphahow do i get it created in the first place? don't know all the structure and so on by heart...14:06
penguin42find one on the net :-) But you shouldn't need one in principal14:07
raphahmm14:07
raphaJeruvy: yes, no X at all14:07
Jeruvylike I said, I got mine working with a hand build xorg.conf (copied and modified from jaunty)14:10
mac_vis there a way to enabled timed lock-screen? if there is i'm just not able to find it!14:11
penguin42mac_v: Preferences->screensaver at the bottom is the 'Regard the computer as idle after ... minutes' and then 'activate screensaver when computer is idle' and 'lock screen when screensaver is active'14:13
mac_vpenguin42: the problem is that my screensaver doesnt activate :( , i have to debug gpm , the workaround is locking the screen , else i'm getting screen burn-in!14:14
raphamaybe i should do an update14:15
penguin42ah, the screensavers haven't been happy lately - it hasn't been locking for me on hibernate14:15
rippsmac_v: yeah, my screensaver doesn't seem to work automatically anymore. I've setup a keystroke on my computer to activate screensaver when I press ctrl+enter14:16
mac_vhmm... is there a bug already ? about these problems...?14:16
penguin42ripps: There's a standard combo of ctrl-alt-l14:16
rippspenguin42: yeah, but that locks my screen, I don't really care to that, besides, ctrl-enter is useful because I can do it with wminput and my wiimote14:17

andresmhWhat is the best way to test audio?19:35
andresmh(input and output)19:35
andresmujicaandresmh you're probably affected by a recent regression, check with alsamixer if your pcm volume is muted.  the best way to report the bug is using ubuntu-bug alsa-base19:36
andresmhit's not playing audio on Flash videos but I would like to test in some other way to make sure it's not a Flash issue19:36
wirechiefandresmh check this link for tips: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting19:36
andresmhthanks andresmujica. I don't see pcm volume muted. How do you know it's alsa-base and not pulse?19:38
andresmhjust wondering19:38
andresmujicaoh well, it's with pulseaudio but is standard procedure.  open the bug pls.  i must go now19:41
andresmhok, thanks.19:41
andresmhwirechief, does that page also apply to Karmic?19:41
wirechiefubuntu19:42
wirechiefbut there might be some subtle changes, the alsa info is key it gives a road map of your sound system for others to help you.19:42
wirechiefafter you run the tests you can file a bug report with your alsa info as an attachment using ubuntu-bug alsabase collects other relavent information too.19:44
andresmh_thanks wirechief, I reported my bug : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/41416519:55

andresmh_how can I revert the updates that messed up my sound while the bug is fixed?19:56
wirechiefandreshm_ looks like the ubuntu-bug is plugging lots of useful information now, I am not sure where or if the alsa devs are getting notified20:03
wirechiefalsa dev's have a seperate mail-list they watch and help users with.20:04
wirechiefyour codec does have a model option so it has been worked on.20:05

wirechiefandreshm_ hmm can you boot to the earlier kernel and see if your issue is still there ?20:16
wirechiefsometimes new kernels bring regressions for some codecs.20:17
andresmh_yeah, but my sonud was working fine until an update I did more recently. I have the feeling it might be related to Pulse.20:17
andresmh_I do see pulse updates as recent as 2009-08-15 11:46:09 status installed pulseaudio 1:0.9.16~test4-0ubuntu620:17
wirechiefwell that could be, use lsof to see whats using your sound20:18
wirechieflsof /dev/dsp* /dev/audio* /dev/mixer* /dev/snd/*   # lists all apps using soundcard #OSS uses /dev/dsp*   alsa uses /dev/snd/*  OSS does not allow mixing so you get this error: Device or resource busy20:18
andresmh_wirechief, it returned: pulseaudi 3642 andresmh   22u   CHR  116,6      0t0 5061 /dev/snd/controlC020:19
wirechiefk well sounds like your right.20:19
wirechiefyou can temporarily disable it .20:20

wirechiefmight not be the most elagant method but it works.20:22

andresmh_what is the best way to test the sound output btw? I typically use YouTube but I can see some problems with that approach...20:22
andresmh_is there a more low level way to test it?20:23
wirechiefi dont think there is a "best" way, there are so many ways sound is used. some use speaker-test for testing20:23
andresmh_ah, you know, pulseaudio is back :-/20:23
andresmh_actually, now I see 2 pulseaudios20:23

andresmh_is there a speaker-test equivalent for the microphone?20:28

wirechief arecord -Ddefault:1 -f cd -vv /dev/null #talk into the mic and watch the volume meter at the bottom of the output for movement of the #'s and changes in the number %20:29
andresmh_i think these commands should be added to the Sound Docs20:29

wirechiefalso your codec showed you could use 3stack for model options20:31
andresmh_my codec? I thought I have many codecs installed and the software picks the appropriate one depending on what it's trying to play20:32
andresmh_and what is model options?20:32
wirechiefyou need to review that soundtroubleshooting link, it shows how to use model options and where to put it.  alsa-base.conf (i think)20:33
wirechiefspecific codecs have had options added for sound by alsa devs20:34
Gumbyhas anyone here seen issues with skype in 64bit 9.10?  I had it working just fine, then updated, and now it wont run.20:34
DanaGwow, I never knew arecord had a volume thingamajigger.20:34
wirechiefthat allow a more flexable and robust use of sound20:34
wirechiefsound sometimes just works but not for what most users want.20:35
wirechiefwhen  bugs are filed and they review the alsa-info they can write specific model options for that codec20:35

bjsnidermaybe this is a grub2 problem21:30
darrenm_in busybox if I do /sbin/mdadm --assemble --scan it says mdadm: no devices found for /dev/md0 mdadm: no devices found for /dev/nd121:31
darrenm_*/dev/md121:32
penguin42darrenm_: Are they there at the busybox prompt in /proc/partitions?21:32
darrenm_yep all there21:32
darrenm_Seems to be the same as this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mdadm/+bug/380748 but this is a dupe of one that was fixed a while ago apparently21:33
ubottuUbuntu bug 380748 in mdadm "Drives with md raid not found during boot (dup-of: 377395)" [Undecided,New]21:33
ubottuUbuntu bug 377395 in util-linux "[karmic] software RAID not assembled at boot - blkid hangs using 100% CPU" [High,Fix released]21:33
darrenm_thanks ubottu - but I upgraded last night, that fix has apparently been out 2 weeks21:33
darrenm_hmmmm hold on in /proc/partitions I can see dm-0 dm-1 dm-3 dm-421:35
penguin42darrenm_: Might be worth reopening the bug21:35
greg-gmac_v: what would you suggest is the right course of action to have the compiz scroll-wheel bug addressed if not by the papercuts team which introduced the bug?21:35
penguin42darrenm_: Are the md built directly on partitions?21:35
darrenm_dm-0 and dm-1 seem to be about the right size for my md's21:36
darrenm_yes on partitions. /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1 is /21:36
darrenm_/dev/sda2 and /dev/sdb2 make /dev/md1 which is /home21:36
mac_vgreg-g: compiz is already assigned as the affects , they have to fix the bug21:37
greg-gmac_v: even if the bug was introduced by the patch applied by the papercut fix?21:38
darrenm_I'll re-open the bug thanks.21:38
penguin42darrenm_: Not sure then - other than reopening that bug; watching for log errors when trying to do the -- assemble21:38
mac_vgreg-g: papercuts is just a team , they *dont* actually write the patches , just push the concerned devs to patch the app21:39
darrenm_Hmmm I think this easy DMRAID thing in Karmic is screwing things up.21:39
greg-gmac_v: right, I know, but they are also responsible for the pushing to get that fix in compiz, which caused this bug, so I thought they should know about it as there was apparently no regression testing.21:39
penguin42darrenm_: What's that? I thought dmraid was mostly for using raid on bios/chipsets that did raid in software21:40
darrenm_When I boot a Karmic alternate CD and try to configure the software RAID it only sees nvidia_beeeccbda21:40
nacho_Hi21:41
darrenm_which is how it refers to the BIOS software RAID. I always ignored that and used Linux MD RAID21:41
nacho_anybody knows how to set the micboost for alsa in karmic?21:41
nacho_I need it for skype21:41
mac_vgreg-g: your concerns are valid , the idea was not the problem , it could have created the problem , but the project needs to have made the patch solid and not buggy, do you see the difference21:41
darrenm_I'll re-open the bug I think. Maybe a regression from DMRAID support out of the box in Karmic.21:42

DanaGI don't have an Intel IGP... so why is i915 loading?  =P21:43

bjsniderDanaG, ubuntu is determined that you should have one21:44
DanaGI'm sure of it... lspci shows only the ATI card.21:44
greg-gby "the project" you mean compiz? I don't see them involved with this patch. this was an Ubuntu patch, not upstream (from what I can tell). So the difference is that the patch created in response to hundredpapercuts pushing was not tested/reviewed fully ("made solid" in your terminology).21:44
mac_vgreg-g: also , we alpha users are the regression testing team ;p21:44
greg-gmac_v: ^21:44
penguin42DanaG: OK21:44
DanaGAnd oddly enough, even blacklisting it doesn't stop it!21:45
greg-gmac_v: indeed we are :)21:45
DanaGI had to actually add something in rc.local to dpkg-divert the actual module out of the way!21:45
DanaGoh yeah, is there any way to get the kernel to be "quiet" on tty0 but verbose on ttyS0?21:46
penguin42does console=ttyS0 not do it?21:46
=== niekie_ is now known as niekie
mac_vgreg-g: no , it was never an upstream patch , it was changed in compiz(ubuntu) , it was just a matter of changing the defaults. i think travis would know more about it21:47
greg-gmac_v: should I reopen the original bug then, as the patch attached to it should be reworked? basically, this should be on the hundredpapercuts project radar (my only reasoning is that people should see the fallout of their changes)21:47
DanaGI have console=ttyS0,115200 console=tty0 quiet splash21:47
DanaGif I don't pass 115200, what rate would it use?21:47

penguin42DanaG: I'd miss the console=tty0 off ?21:47
