graham_Hi all, anyone know how to configure kubuntu for nvidia sli - I've been trying for days and haven't got anywhere.05:29
djayhogansorry graham_ , wish I could help you05:31
graham_Actually, the sli part shouldn't be that hard, its getting the xorg.conf setup for the correct card in the first place - seems a nightmare.05:32
graham_I05:33
graham_I've got the sli command noted down. but ca05:33
graham_...but for some reason am unable to get the sorg.conf setup with all the commands for the relevant card.05:34
graham_I've been battling with this ubuntu for several days now. first it was disk drives. finally got that sorted - now can't sort graphics. what a pain in the arse.05:35
graham_...but determined to see it through, just now ran out of idea's. Being a newb with this os doesn't help.05:35
graham_Ah well dj, thanks for reply all the same.05:37
djayhoganyeah, i know the feeling; doesn't help that the channel's pretty much dead at the moment, either. Don't feel too bad; after 3 years I still have to switch video cards to get to the console05:38
graham_it seems that whatever I do, the xorg.conf doesn't get populated with the relevant info.  If it did, I could then enter the command to add in the sli bit. at boot it keeps telling me problems with display.05:39
graham_...and the only way to resolve it is with a complete new install.05:39
graham_probably installed this now about 30 times. lol, kinda wearing me out now. I may be resilient - but getting tired with it.05:40
graham_Damn shame, cuz its much better than window. and I dislike MS anyway.05:41
djayhoganthinking, you might try your question in #ubuntu; they usually have a good handle on xorg setup problems05:42
graham_ok, I'll have a look. I just left this at its default channel. thanks for taking the time to reply. take it easy.05:44

theadminWhat is "Shiretoko web browser", why did it install on my system, and what is it's package name? I want to remove that07:06
theadminIt installed along with firefox07:06
dracnocShrietoko was/is and early FF3.5beta.07:07
theadminAnd how do i remove that? I need firefox only07:07
dracnoci seem to recall it being listed as firefox-3.5 in the repos.07:08
theadminOh.07:08
khaije|amaltshiretoko is the release name, identified in the repo as firefox-3.5, the default firefox packaged still points to v307:09
dracnocthere ya go07:09
theadminalright, i removed that. Also, is it safe to remove konqueror? I recall it has something to do with Dolphin...07:10
dracnocnot entirely sure what would happen there.07:11
dracnocjust tried to remove it, there's no mention of it altering Dolphin, so you might get away with it.07:12
theadminOkay, guess i can leave it. Something bad could happen. As far as i remember, both dolphin and konqueror are parts of an application "kfmclient"07:13
dracnocno. kfmclient does it's own thing. kfmclient can call up both konqueror and dolphin to get things done. You may wish to keep it.07:16
dracnoc(It's part of the KDE base)07:16
theadminBut removing a part of it won't remove it itself?07:17

dracnocno, not at all07:18

PolycultureBrianE: have a look at systemsettings14:35
Polyculture--> keyboard and mouse14:36

Polycultureand then select double-click to open files and folders14:36
BrianEAha, thanks very much :-)14:37
Polyculturenote that this is a kde-global setting14:37
Polyculturealso valid for konqueror, for instance14:37
PolycultureBrianE: you're welcome14:37
BrianESpeaking of Konqueror, I've been trying to set Firefox as my default browser in KDE since switching to KDE last night... I haven't been able to, there is no "Firefox" option in the drop-down in System Settings and setting it as default in Firefox doesn't do so14:38
Polyculturewhere did you try to select this?14:40
BluesKajBrianE, you have to set it in a couple of places as default , not just system settings14:41
BrianEActually just got it, thanks :)14:41
Polycultureyou can define a programme to handle http and https under 'default applications'14:41
BrianEI guess I forgot to hit "Apply" =\14:41

BluesKajerr kmail and also your irc app14:43

_2BrianE heh. you mean the default settings/theme look nice14:45
_2Polyculture i would have guessed there too     but....14:45

BluesKajPolyculture, kmail is part of kde system settings but other progs like thunderbird etc need to be configged internally14:47
BrianENo, I mean the whole shebang14:47
BrianEIt hasn't got the icons fixed yet, but the rest is looking a whole lot better layout-wise, colour-wise, etc14:47
PolycultureBluesKaj: yeah, so i guess this was a missunderstanding14:47
BrianEBefore, EVERYTHING colour-clashed, it was HORRIBLE. Now, it's actually aesthetic... Save the icons14:47
_2BluesKaj the system settings menu ?14:47

kaddi_2 didn't want to say that as you obviously wanted it in the menu ;)14:53
_2thought if it used to be in some wierd location, sutely someone here would recall where14:54
kaddi_2 in kde4 it is in programs->internet->kmail, which is were I would expect it in kde3 as well14:54

BluesKaj_2, do a locate kmail in the terminal , cuz it certainly seens to exist in "/home/username/.kde/share/apps/kmail"15:00

anoneemousei dont mind doing it manually17:23
shadeslayeranoneemouse: its up to you,its automatic....17:23

BrianEanoneemouse: No. I've tried sending messages to myself, I get a notification saying "Incoming message from Brian"... Below that are empty quotes17:42
kaddiQuantumKaos partitions get mounted under /media/somename which is where you want to copy that content17:42
anoneemousehave you tried running kopete from command line and checking for errors on the console when you send a message?17:42

QuantumKaosi tried that too, but it wont let me copy it anyway, i even tried sudo dolphin but still it wont work17:43
kaddiQuantumKaos under what name did you mount the partition?17:43
QuantumKaoscould this be a prob? http://paste.ubuntu.com/255235/17:44
kaddiQuantumKaos you need to start graphical programs with kdesudo instead of sudo, but this should not be the problem17:45
kaddihow did you mount the partition?17:45
kaddiand what filesystem is it using?17:45
QuantumKaoshave u seen the output? http://paste.ubuntu.com/255235/17:47

kaddiQuantumKaos yes, it is most likely due to the fact that you started dolphin with sudo instead of kdesudo. This is not a problem related to your copying. Please answer my questions: Did you mount the drive to which you are trying to copy and what filesystem does it have? (eg ntfs, fat32, ext2..)17:49

BrianELol, you're not gonna believe this...17:56
BrianEWell you probably are, but it's stupid nonetheless17:56

BrianEWhen browsing through the plugins page I'd enabled "Pipe" and written a test script to see what kind of data it passed, see if I could parse that into an online IM database for future use...17:57
BrianEThe script didn't return anything, so Kopete just ignored my messages and treated everything as "" :(17:58
kaddiQuantumKaos when you try to access a mounted device, you will always find it in media. You only need /dev/sd if you are mounting something manually (eg mount  /dev/sda1 /media/disk) once the device is mounted, you can access it in media. mount will tell you which device is mounted to which mountpoint in media17:58

Phreasorry to bother you again, what's the recommended partition setup for the most stable install? [I have a 320gig hdd]19:37
BluesKaj!partition19:38
ubottuFor help with partitioning a new install see: https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/switching/installing-partitioning.html - For partitioning programs see !GParted, !QtParted (!Kubuntu 8.10 and lower) or !PartitionManager (!Kubuntu 9.04 and up) - Other partitioning topics include !fstab !home and !swap19:38
PhreaI'm thinking: / 10GB, /etc 10gb, /swap 8gb, /home [the rest]19:38
DragnslcrThat would work, though I don't usually separate /etc from /19:39
BluesKajPhrea, how much Ram ?19:39
PhreaI know how to partition, just not sure of the size per partition19:39
PhreaBluesKaj: 4gb19:39
DragnslcrI would think /var would need the space more than /etc would19:39
PhreaI've got lots of room, so better safe than sorry right19:39
BluesKajthen 4G is plenty ..ususlly it's 1.5X ram but that's formula for under 2G19:40
Phreaso would you recommend /var as a seperate partition instead of /etc?19:40
Phreaor are both quite useless as seperate partitions?19:40
kaddispeaking of space and /var/ is /var/log cleaned up in any way or do I get the logs from install up to the current date in there?19:41
kaddiI have a kdm.log that has >1Gb which I find quite a lot19:41
DragnslcrI don't think separating /etc or /var is worth it. Just do regular backups of them and you should be fine19:41
Phreaso both on / ?19:42
DragnslcrI only have about 15 MB on /etc, and less than 1 GB on /var19:42
Phrea[no partitions for either of them?]19:42
BluesKajdunno never tried it ...tried / as a seperate once but never saw any speed advantages , mostly it's meant to save your data if one or the other in the unlikely event that one becomes corrupted19:42

kaddiok, BluesKaj, silentda  I didn't entirely follow what you guys did, did you install flashplugin-installer? kubuntu-extras-restricted? Did you install sun-java?21:49
kaddisilentda: I think the problem is, that you have several programs for flash installed and they keep each other from working correctly. The same might be true for java21:50
silentdakaddi, we did install kubuntu-restricted-extras, I think flashplugin-installer is already there (can check), and I'll have to check on sun java21:51
kaddisilentda: can you type the following commands into your commandline and tell me which of these have been installed. (give me a sec I need to look for the packages)21:51
silentdabut yes, it was my suspicion that I because some of my plugins are seemingly superfluous, it's a conflict in the system21:51
