chrisccoulsonhey robert_ancell - i see you've taken the gnome-system-tools update00:34
chrisccoulsonare you doing system-tools-backends too?00:34
robert_ancellhi chrisccoulson, I will do00:35
chrisccoulsonthanks:)00:35
chrisccoulsonbryc01:59
chrisccoulsonbryce - Xorg will re-use window ID's won't it?01:59
chrisccoulsonso, if an application has a window ID from an event at some point in time, and then does something with it later on, there is no guarantee that the ID will correspond to the same window?02:01
pittiGood morning06:10
kklimondamorning06:14
robert_ancellhey pitti, can you look at the changes I am making in bug 417985 for the new polkit release?  I need to package this to make the new gnome-system-tools work06:55
ubottuLaunchpad bug 417985 in policykit-1-gnome "Update to 0.94" [Wishlist,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/41798506:55
pittihey robert_ancell06:55
robert_ancellpitti, polkit-gnome now has polkitgtk functionality, how do you think the package should be split?06:56
pittirobert_ancell: you mean a libpolkit-gtk?06:57
robert_ancellpitti, yes06:57
robert_ancellpitti, but it shares translations with the existing polkit-gnome code06:57
pittirobert_ancell: if it builds a new shared library, it should be split out, yes06:57
pittirobert_ancell: that's fine06:57
pittigreat, another step on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/PolicyKitOneMigration06:59
pittirobert_ancell: btw, the source package is named policykit-1-gnome07:00
robert_ancellpitti, but polkit-1-gnome upstream :)07:01
pittirobert_ancell: right, but the branch is policykit-gnome-107:01
pittianyway, once the migration is done, we can drop the -107:01
pittirobert_ancell: do you have a package for new policykit-1, too?07:01
robert_ancellpitti, yes07:02
robert_ancellbug 41798407:02
ubottuLaunchpad bug 417984 in policykit-1 "Update to 0.94" [Wishlist,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/41798407:02
pittirobert_ancell: so yes, please split out the new gtk library then07:02
pittirobert_ancell: I'll sponsor that in the meantime then07:03
pittirobert_ancell: bug 417984 updated, apparently this is missing some build deps; could you please check the configure.ac diff?07:19
ubottuLaunchpad bug 417984 in policykit-1 "Update to 0.94" [Wishlist,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/41798407:19
robert_ancellpitti, ok07:19
robert_ancellpitti, oh, introspection.  I thought that was off by default.  Do we build it if we can?07:22
pittirobert_ancell: I guess we should start doing it now, but I'm not sure07:23
pittiif you can disable it in configure, that's fine as well07:23
robert_ancellpitti, I will disable now to keep it simple, enable it when we have a need07:23
=== tkamppeter_ is now known as tkamppeter
robert_ancellpitti, did I name libpolkit-gtk0 correctly?  Or is it libpolkit-gtk-1-0?  Very confused with naming scheme...07:25
pittirobert_ancell: what's the name of the .so?07:25
robert_ancelllibpolkit-gtk-1.so.0.0.007:26
pittiright then it's libpolkit-gtk-1-007:26
pittiit's usually "librarynameSONAME"07:26
pittibut if libraryname ends with a number, it's "libraryname-SONAME"07:26
pittii. e. libc.so.6 -> libc6, but libfoo-1.so.0 -> libfoo-1-007:27
robert_ancellpitti, ok, thanks07:27
robert_ancellOK, pitti I seem to have everything working, please sponsor bugs 417900, 417899, 416321, 417984.  Who knew just updating gnome-system tools would set off a chain of dependencies to be upgraded :)07:58
ubottuLaunchpad bug 417900 in gnome-games "Update to 2.27.90" [Wishlist,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/41790007:58
ubottuLaunchpad bug 417899 in gnome-system-tools "Update to 2.27.3" [Wishlist,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/41789907:58
ubottuLaunchpad bug 416321 in system-tools-backends "Please package the system-tools-backends 2.8.1" [Wishlist,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/41632107:58
ubottuLaunchpad bug 417984 in policykit-1 "Update to 0.94" [Wishlist,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/41798407:58
pittirobert_ancell: heh, thanks for doing these updates07:58
pittirobert_ancell: and a new pk-gnome as well? (what was the bug again?)07:59
robert_ancellbug?07:59
robert_ancell pitti: what bug?08:00
pittithe sponsoring bug08:00
pittior are you still working on the library splitout?08:00
robert_ancellpitti, i gave you the wrong four tabs, ignore the gnome-games one and the pk-gnome one is bug 41798508:01
ubottuLaunchpad bug 417985 in policykit-1-gnome "Update to 0.94" [Wishlist,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/41798508:01
pittiah08:01
pittirobert_ancell: hm, did you push policykit-1? "No revisions to pull."08:01
pitti(could be just LP lag)08:02
robert_ancellpitti, sorry, pushed now08:02
pittiok, will upload the lot08:02
pittirobert_ancell: I'll do a small fix, the *.so should go into -dev08:15
robert_ancellpitti, ah that explains it,  I was confused why libpolkit-gobject didn't have the .so in its install file...08:15
pittiit's only required for gcc (-lfoo looks for libfoo.so)08:18
pittibut at runtime it uses the SONAME-versioned file08:18
pittirobert_ancell: hm, odd that policykit-1-gnome doesn't depend on the new library08:21
robert_ancellpitti, on libpolkit-gtk?08:22
pittiright08:22
pittiperhaps it's just some d-bus shim08:22
robert_ancellpitti, afaik it is a completely separate library for polkit clients, I was suprised that it is bundled in the polkit-gnome source release as it's not that related08:23
robert_ancellit only contains a GTK+ unlock button at the moment I think08:23
* pitti -> breakfast08:23

pittihey chrisccoulson, how are you?08:47
chrisccoulsonhey pitti - i'm good thanks. and how was your holiday?08:47
pittichrisccoulson: excellent, and very relaxing; we bicycled 900 km through Germany and tented, with splendid weather08:48
pitti14 days of fresh air are great :)08:48
chrisccoulsonfantastic. do you not feel like another holiday after 900km though? ;)08:48
didrockshey pitti, chrisccoulson!08:52
* didrocks back from vacation too08:52
chrisccoulsonpitti - i see you commented on bug 412555 this morning. have you seen the discussion that bratsche started on desktop-devel-list?08:52

pittichrisccoulson: no, I didn't see that; I'm not on desktop-devel08:53
chrisccoulsonoops, wrong bug number!08:53
chrisccoulsonpitti - http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2009-August/msg00064.html08:53
chrisccoulsonunfortunately, it went slightly off-topic, and not many people came up with suggestions08:53
chrisccoulsondid you have a good vacation didrocks?08:54
* pitti hugs didrocks, enjoyed your vac, too?08:55
pittichrisccoulson: will read in a bit, thanks08:55
didrocksgreat, thanks! very resting (swimming with this hot weather really rocks ;)) and some walk in the moutains :)08:55

pittididrocks: at some days it was pretty warm (30 degrees), but mostly it was okay08:57
pittiand while you are on the way you have some wind to cool :)08:57
didrocksindeed ^^08:57
pittirobert_ancell: you dropped the system-tools-backends dependency from g-s-t, was that intended?09:00
pittichangelog says otherwise09:00
loolpitti: welcome back!09:03
pittihey lool, thanks!09:04
pittirobert_ancell: I'll re-add the dep09:09
robert_ancellpitti, thanks, that was a mistake.09:13
robert_ancellbye all09:14
chrisccoulsonpitti - is it possible to stop the retracer from marking newly reported bugs as duplicates of one which was already fixed? We've been getting lots of gnome-settings-daemon crashes in the last couple of weeks with a similar stacktrace to an old (fixed) bug, but all the new reports are being marked as duplicates of that bug, and having their stacktrace's removed09:38
chrisccoulsonthere is a separate thread of bug reports for the new issue09:39
pittichrisccoulson: yes, I can change it in the dup db; do you have the # of the old bug and a "new" one which should become the new master bug?09:40
chrisccoulsonpitti - the old one is bug 25467109:42
ubottuLaunchpad bug 254671 in gnome-settings-daemon "gnome-settings-daemon crashed with signal 5 in gdk_x_error()" [Medium,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/25467109:42
chrisccoulsonand the new one is bug 32104109:42
ubottuLaunchpad bug 321041 in gnome-settings-daemon "gnome-settings-daemon crashed with signal 5 in xkl_process_error()" [Medium,Incomplete] https://launchpad.net/bugs/32104109:42
chrisccoulsonbut the new one doesn't have all of the usual apport information, as it got removed when it was marked as a duplicate09:43
chrisccoulson(although, I do have a stacktrace on the bug report now)09:43
pittichrisccoulson: you manually unduped them? They shouldn't have become dupes in the first place, it's a different function09:43
chrisccoulsonpitti - someone else has been manually un-duping the new ones which come in09:43
pittioh, I see, the stack trace top is just error handling09:44
chrisccoulsonyeah - they do actually look very similar, but it seems that there is an upstream bug report on the old one which fixes a very specific issue09:45
chrisccoulsonso, i'm not sure they're the same issue, even though the traces look similar09:46
mac_vpitti: another issue with apport > Bug #416106 , seb was saying the retracers were crashing for totem so i filed a bug , or is it a known issue?09:47
ubottuLaunchpad bug 416106 in apport "totem-plugin-viewer bugs make the retracers crash" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/41610609:47
pittimac_v: please assign the bug to me, will have a look later09:47
mac_vok :)09:47
pittiChazz: db updated09:50
chrisccoulsonpitti - was that aimed at me? ;)09:50
pittioops09:50
Chazzpitti, ?09:50
* pitti should put more attention to IRC09:50
chrisccoulsonthanks:)09:50

Chazzpitti, that's happened to me hundreds of times :P09:51
mvohey glatzor!10:12
chrisccoulsonhttp://people.canonical.com/~seb128/versions.html is not being updated is it?10:21
Amaranthmvo: can you look at bug 91786 and the branch linked to it?10:21
ubottuLaunchpad bug 91786 in compiz "Compiz's Panel shadows show on top of other windows" [Low,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/9178610:21
mvoAmaranth: sure, much thanks10:21
Amaranthmvo: I created the code with help from onestone_ (thanks, btw) so it should be good :)10:22
mvoAmaranth: I will upload now (once I resolved some conflicts in my apt merge :)10:22
Amaranthyay10:22
mvoor maybe before, conclict resolving is just no fun :(10:22
* mvo hugs Amaranth and is happy to see him10:23
Amaranthmvo: I was tempted to just merge the branch myself but the gnome-do guys beat into my head that everyone's stuff has to get reviewed first :)10:23
Amaranthmvo: hehe, I hope to fix a couple more issues in the near future10:23
AmaranthBeing unemployed gives you lots of free time for such things :/10:24
mvoAmaranth: that great news that you work on the stuff again (the unemployment bit is not that great :(((((10:24
Amarantheh, I knew it was coming so I saved enough to live on for a few months so I'm not too sad about it10:24
* mvo nods10:25
Amaranthmvo: have any other bugs for compiz you think should get fixed asap10:25
Amaranth?10:25
* mvo looks at the bug list10:25
Amaranthmvo: oh, I think the doPoll bug has a fix in git10:26
mvoAmaranth: one nice feature would be to use protobuf in compiz itself, for the plugins we have it now and it is a nice speed up10:26
mvobut probably out of scope10:26
mvoAmaranth: ohhhhh - the doPoll() bug is fixed? woah!10:26
Amaranthmvo: upstream is apparently undecided on whether or not to do an 0.8.4 release or just let people use snapshots/cherrypicking10:26
mvoI can do a snapshot now and see if that is good10:27
Amaranthmvo: apparently most of the doPoll crashes on are exit but since exit is usually logout people don't see it until some time into their next login10:27
mvobut a real release would be cool10:27
Amaranthmvo: So what is thought to be the main doPoll crasher should be fixed but it is still unknown if all of those dupes are the same bug or not10:27
* mvo nods10:28
mvoin the 0.8 branch I assume?10:28
Amaranthmvo: the protobuf still would likely make more sense for the master branch considering how long it'd take to get right10:28
Amaranthmvo: actually the bug still existed in master but yeah, it was fixed in both branches10:28
didrockschrisccoulson: "Last updated: Friday August 14 2009" seems not10:34
chrisccoulsonheh, thanks didrocks - i should have spotted the date there really;)10:35
chrisccoulsonso, we might be way behind with updates now! i didn't do any while people were on holiday ;)10:36
didrockschrisccoulson: probably (and GNOME 2.27.91 is due on wednesday. So new tarballs from today)10:37
didrockschrisccoulson: you still can launch it on your computer :)10:38
chrisccoulsonthanks, yeah, i didn't try that yet10:38
Amaranthmvo: looks like fixing metacity to let compiz start when compositing enabled would be a good bug to fix10:40
mvoAmaranth: what bugnumber is this (I'm not on top of things with compiz anymore)10:47
mvoAmaranth: I ask on #compiz-dev about the release10:47
mvowould be nice to have one for karmic if that is possible10:48
Amaranthbug 17895310:48
ubottuLaunchpad bug 178953 in metacity "Cannot switch to Compiz if Metacity compositor is enabled" [Undecided,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/17895310:48
mvooh, right10:48
Amaranthit's actually a bug in metacity and owen suggested a good fix on the upstream bug report10:48
mvoAmaranth: I merged you branch, just shout when I should upload. otherwise I will wait a bit for more to come :)10:56
Amaranthmvo: I suspect you'll be in bed by the time I wake up and get anything else done, if I even have anything by then11:01
Amaranthmvo: in compiz, anyway11:02
AmaranthI may have a patch for metacity in a minute...11:02
mvocool11:03
Amaranthyay, metacity fixed11:03
Laneyhuh, didn't know that was a bug11:04
LaneyI just assumed that I couldn't have compiz ;)11:04
AmaranthLaney: so did asac, his bug is marked as High against compiz because of metacity problems :P11:05
Laneypsh, still didn't enable11:06
Laneyoh well11:06
AmaranthLaney: pastebin output of compiz --replace in terminal11:06
Laneyworks when I do it like that11:07
Laneybut not from g-a-p11:07
Amaranththat should be all the appearance capplet is doing...11:08
AmaranthLaney: check your ~/.xsession-errors, see if you can see compiz trying to start (should be at the end)11:08
Laneyit does some jockey stuff11:08
Amaranthoh, what is the error g-a-p gives you?11:08
Amaranthg-a-p will bail if jockey says you need a blob you don't have or can't get11:09
LaneyIt just says "could not enable desktop effects"11:09
Laneyor something like that11:09
Laneybut --replace actually seems ok11:09
AmaranthLaney: sounds like a jockey or g-a-p bug then11:09
Laneyeven though I have no window switcher11:10
Laneyhow can I manually set compiz as my WM then?11:10
Amaranthrun compiz --replace on login :P11:10
Laneyheh11:11
chrisccoulsonLaney - run 'gconftool-2 --set --type string /desktop/sessions/required_components/windowmanager compiz"11:16
chrisccoulsonor something like that ;)11:16
chrisccoulsoni might have gotten the path wrong11:16
Laneythanks11:16
LaneyI might not stick with compiz though11:16
Amaranththe session stuff has changed at least twice since the last time I looked at it11:16
Laneyit's too intense for me :(11:16
Amaranthonce on our end, once by having gnome-session rewritten11:16
* Laney is trying to tone down the bling11:17
chrisccoulsonthe way we start the window manager is way too complicated11:17
chrisccoulsonwe patch the upstream gnome-wm script with our own magic, and i'm not too sure what any of it does anymore11:18
AmaranthI love how new packages for universe have to have no lintian warnings and such but the metacity package has 2 pages of them :P11:18
LaneyDo as I say, not as I do!11:19
chrisccoulsonlol. what are the warnings?11:19
Amaranthchrisccoulson: stuff like no manpage11:19
chrisccoulsonah, ok.11:20
AmaranthI had to make a worthless manpage for alacarte before it got accepted in universe :P11:20
chrisccoulsonyeah, i'm not sure what use a manpage is for a window manager11:20
Laneyhelp2man to the rescue11:21
Amaranthok, bug 178953 has a branch linked, someone wanna review and upload for me? :)11:26
ubottuLaunchpad bug 178953 in metacity "Cannot switch to Compiz if Metacity compositor is enabled" [Undecided,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/17895311:26
AmaranthI also sent the patch upstream via the linked bug report11:26
KeybukRiddell: hey, how's it going?12:30
Riddellhi Keybuk, all sunny here12:38
RiddellKeybuk: able to make a meeting at 17:00?12:40
KeybukRiddell: just saw that in my calendar, what's it about?12:42
Riddellwhat needs to be done for Kubuntu WRT xsplash12:42
pittiArneGoetje: FYI, I'm cleaning up {dapper,gutsy}-proposed on rookery, since we won't update them any more anyway, and space is tight12:43
KeybukRiddell: probably depends a little bit on the design of kdm12:44
Keybukbut basically you'd want to start xsplash as one of the first things in whatever equivalent of xinit kdm has12:44
Keybukand then have the kdm greeter equivalent signal to it to go away12:44
Keybukthen you'd want to restart xsplash as one of the first things in the equivalent of xsession12:45
Keybukand have the kdm session manager/window manager/etc. signal to it to go away12:45
RiddellKeybuk: we don't want to use xsplash itself since it has a  GTK dependency so it's a questions of what we want ksplashx to do12:46
KeybukI guess you'd want it to do the same as xsplash12:46
Keybukit should be very small and lightweight, so it starts *really* fast12:47
Riddellwell yes, a GTK dependency is strange for that reason12:47
Keybukthe idea is to paint something on the screen while the greeter or session loads, after all12:47
RiddellKeybuk: why is there a delay starting the GDM greeter at all?12:47
Keybukthere isn't a "delay"12:48
Keybukit just takes a long time12:48
Keybuk3-5s depending on hardware fwict12:48
Keybukif kdm takes less than a quarter of a second to be ready, then you could skip it entirely and just have a splash for the session login12:49
Keybuk(which never takes a quarter of a second :p)12:49
Keybukbut I don't remember kdm's greeter being especially fast either12:49
Riddellmm12:49
RiddellKeybuk: is GDM moving from being at S30 ?12:49
Keybukgdm will be started by upstart12:49
pittiKeybuk: btw, I understand you have a huge pile of upstartization; will that land before FF still?12:52
Keybukpitti: it's always been targeted before Beta12:52
pittiKeybuk: oh, and hello :)12:52
Keybukhello :-)12:53
RiddellKeybuk: so we want to have KDM upstarted too, have it start ksplashx toot sweet and kill it when the greeter is shown (also if autologin happens), and that should be it (it's already started during session login)12:55
KeybukRiddell: that would be a good plan yeah12:55
KeybukDavid Barth's team are doing the "Boot Experience" work (ie. xsplash), not me though12:56
* Keybuk sees his job more as making their hard work obsolete because boot is too fast to *be* an experience <g>12:56
RiddellKeybuk: yep, he mentioned that Aurelien could work on this12:56

kenvandinehave a good night17:29
didrockspitti, kenvandine: can it be considered as a good practice to source the added /etc/bash_completion.d/<file> in postinst to give the user immediate shell completion in his environment (at least, for the current shell)?18:15
didrocksI see nothing in bzr postinst18:15
kenvandinedidrocks, i don't think it is a good idea18:20
chrisccoulsonhey didrocks - did you enjoy your first day back from vacation?:)18:23
didrockschrisccoulson: "enjoy" is not really the word but we can say that ^^18:23
chrisccoulsonhehe ;)18:23
chrisccoulsonwhat do you do normally during the day outside of ubuntu (if you don't mind me asking)?18:24
didrockschrisccoulson: I'm working as a production engineer for the VCS infrastructure of my company18:25
didrocks(so, still related to IT)18:25
chrisccoulsoncool, that sounds fun:)18:25
didrockschrisccoulson: and you? :)18:25
chrisccoulsoni'm an electronics design engineer for a company making braking systems18:26
chrisccoulsonnot very fun ;)18:26
chrisccoulsonand not related to IT or software either!18:26
didrockschrisccoulson: are you more on the R&D side?18:27
chrisccoulsonyeah, sort of. although, i'm not sure how much R&D is possible with braking systems ;)18:27
* didrocks tries to remember what I learnt on electronic during my general engineering studies :)18:28
didrocksoh yeah… it was not fun ^^18:28
chrisccoulsonheh, yeah. i didn't mind learning electronics - and that really is all i learnt for 4 years18:29
chrisccoulsonbut working in electronics isn't as much fun18:29
chrisccoulsonprobably why i spend so much time on here;)18:30
didrockschrisccoulson: sure :)18:31
Ampelbeinhey guys, could you check if you can still access e.g. system-administration-time_and_date with the gnome-system-tools update from today? I can't unlock the settings.18:34
chrisccoulsonAmpelbein - did you get the system-tools-backends update too?18:36
chrisccoulsonyou'll need them both due to the porting to polkit-118:36
Ampelbeinchrisccoulson: oh wait a second. yeah, systemtools-backends is up to date, but gnome-system-tools is not. It can't be due to it not being built.18:39
Ampelbeinchrisccoulson: see https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-system-tools/2.27.3-0ubuntu118:40
Ampelbeinchrisccoulson: that's weird, it is DEPWAIT on libpolkit-gtk-1-dev which has been published 8 hours ago.18:41

hyperairpitti: out of curiosity, what did you do to get the arrow in podsleuth's changelog?19:01
=== Chazz is now known as daBomb|Not-Here
geserhyperair: as the changelog is encoded in UTF-8 one can use → (U+2192) (or any other UTF-8 character)19:14
hyperairhmm19:15
hyperairi see19:15
* hyperair was thinking more along the lines of a compose key =\19:15
geserin vim it would be ctrl-v u2192 (in insert mode) to get it19:16

chrisccoulsonAmpelbein - i wonder if it is because libpolki-gtk-1-dev binary is in universe?19:37
Ampelbeinchrisccoulson: yeah, that's it. geser pointed that out on debian-devel. I only looked at the sourcepackage, which is in main.19:37
chrisccoulsonah, ok, i didn't realise19:38
Ampelbein /s/debian-devel/ubuntu-devel obviously19:38
