pleia2ok, who all is here for the community learning project meeting?21:00
pleia2#startmeeting Ubuntu Community Learning Project21:00
MootBotMeeting started at 15:00. The chair is pleia2.21:00
MootBotCommands Available: [TOPIC], [IDEA], [ACTION], [AGREED], [LINK], [VOTE]21:00
doctormoBiosElement, danbhfive, doctormo and maybe some others.21:00
danbhfiveyes, Im here!21:01
GrantbowI'm hear to learn more.21:01
Grantbow*here21:01
pleia2ok, before we get to the agenda I'd like to know if there are more folks here like Grantbow who are interested in knowing more about the project and how to contribute21:01
danbhfiveI'm in that boat21:02
pleia2the project is primarily focused around development of course material to be presented by loco teams and other interested in hosting courses, but also includes projects like Classroom which do IRC-based training21:03
pleia2essentially it's a place for all community learning things to converge21:03
pleia2doctormo has been leading the way with both course development AND teaching at his loco :)21:03
pleia2so the spectrum of "what we need help with" at this point is pretty broad21:03
doctormoThis means we have need for drafters, peer reviewers, graphics artists etc etc21:04
doctormoAs well as teachers, students and all of those who will use the materials21:04
pleia2I'd like to nail down some specifics during the second agenda item, since we seem a bit stalled on the volunteer stuff21:05
Grantbowagenda url?21:05
pleia2[LINK] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Learning/Agenda21:05
MootBotLINK received:  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Learning/Agenda21:05
Grantbowty21:05
doctormohttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Learning <- main wiki21:06
pleia2does anyone have any specific general questions before we get to the Agenda? (we can get to questions after, too, if you think of any)21:06
danbhfiveI'm good to ask questions after21:06
pleia2ok, cool21:07
pleia2[TOPIC] Course production progress check-in21:07
MootBotNew Topic:  Course production progress check-in21:07
pleia2I have to sheepishly admit that I'm behind on the desktop introduction course, I've extended my deadline a week out (was supposed to be due tomorrow)21:08
pleia2I was working on the desktop stuff: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Learning/UbuntuDesktopTopics21:08
pleia2doctormo: can you give us a quick status update on your sysadmin courses?21:08
pleia2BiosElement: can you do the same with your course development?21:09
doctormopleia2: Right, so the first 7 classes of the preset 10 class course have been written in first draft (alpha) quality.21:09
pleia2\o/21:09
BiosElementSure, currently somewhat stalled but continuing to make progress. Currently working on a course development workflow.21:10
doctormoDesktop: pleia2, SysAdmin: doctormo, Programming/Development: none, Teaching: BiosElement, Marketing/LoCo: none21:10
pleia2ok, I think that's enough of an update unless either of you have more to add21:11
pleia2the next agenda item is directly related21:11
pleia2[TOPIC] Tasklist for new volunteers?21:11
MootBotNew Topic:  Tasklist for new volunteers?21:11
pleia2so, based on our current course development statuses, what specific tasks can we give new volunteers?21:12
pleia2doctormo: presumably you need reviewers?21:12
doctormopleia2: sure do21:13
pleia2I know for me it would be nice to see each section of the 5-prong teaching fleshed out some, have volunteers provide good links to existing content so when the actual course-writers come along they don't need to spend days digging up the appropriate, quality documenation they need21:13
doctormodanbhfive is helping me reviewing some of the classes in the sysadmin class.21:13
pleia2hooray danbhfive :)21:13
doctormopaultab was also giving me a hand with it21:13
pleia2cool21:14
pleia2I think we should resurrect our task list21:14
pleia2[LINK] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Learning/Tasks21:14
MootBotLINK received:  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Learning/Tasks21:14
doctormoSo yes, getting people writing is important, even if what they write isn't the best last draft. Getting things structured is easy enough, getting it written on that structure takes time.21:15
* pleia2 nods21:15
pleia2doctormo: I will say, your coursework thus far is very inspiring21:15
doctormoPerhaps we need to come up with a bit of marketing once our BiosElement has finished with the how to write a course class, that was we can advertise a class to teach the course writing.21:16
pleia2maybe we can target our marketing to specific teams within the project?21:16
doctormopleia2: The one hole in my course material is the practicals, I'm hoping second drafting with danbhfive can plug some of those holes.21:16
doctormopleia2: Sure, for instance I would target something to the forums to advertise for desktop class writers.21:17
pleia2doctormo: I play sysadmin by day, so I'll carve out some time to review as well :)21:17
doctormoThank you21:17
Grantbowwould a tri-fold flyer targeted at non-technical non-Linux computer users fall under Marketing/LoCo?  http://www.berkeleylug.com/Contributions/21:17
pleia2Grantbow: yep!21:17
Grantbowgreat21:18
doctormoGrantbow: How to write a tri-fold flyer would, the flyer it's self would go to spreadubuntu project?21:18
pleia2so the marketing courses will be teaching people how to use and develop these kinds of materials21:18
Grantbowah21:18
=== edsoncanto is now known as edson
pleia2there might be one lesson called "leveraging the resources of spreadubuntu"21:19
Grantbowsounds like LoCo classes are an extension of Mentorship21:19
doctormoGrantbow: Or something to feed it21:19
* Grantbow nods21:19
Grantbowoutreach21:19
doctormoGrantbow: Don't forget, we're a place to build materials to use for these kinds of teaching and mentoring classes.21:19
pleia2yeah, most of the information about how to do everything we're doing already exists in documentation, we're seeking to put it into teachable format21:20
doctormoGrantbow: If you know anyone in the mentorship group who would like to head up the marketing/loco section, that would fill a hole.21:20
pleia2reading wiki pages all day gets pretty dry, and telling everyone in your loco to read it rather than presenting it to them 1) doesn't work 2) isn't very fun :)21:21
Grantbownot right now21:21
doctormoGrantbow: How big is the mentorship group?21:21
pleia2are we referring to the USTeams Mentors?21:22
Grantbowdoctormo: that's a better question for pleia2 I think.21:22
GrantbowI was thinking of US, yes.21:22
pleia2we currently have 4 mentors on the team21:22
pleia2each mentors 3-4 states at the moment21:22
doctormoAh so not that big yet.21:23
pleia2maybe we can talk pak33m into helping out :) he's our newest mentor21:23
doctormoFor now we can put the topic into "gardening", just have a look at the topics page and weed it now and then with the ideas you've picked up.21:24
* pleia2 nods21:24
doctormohttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Learning/AdvocateTopics21:24
doctormoI'm thinking of renaming it anyway, from Advocate to CommunityTopics21:24
pleia2that seems reasonable21:24
pleia2ok, so, any ideas for more specific tasks at this time?21:25
pleia2I think this is a fine start21:25
GidgetKitchendoctormo: +121:25
Grantbowwith the spread ubuntu project, that might be a good name - community is too broad21:26
pleia2doctormo: oh! Can you link the rest of your courses to the sysadmin page? I think only 3 are now21:26
doctormopleia2: Ah right21:26
doctormoActually 5 are, see section 221:26
pleia2ok cool21:26
Grantbowa great start, indeed!21:28
pleia2[TOPIC] General questions/discussion21:29
MootBotNew Topic:  General questions/discussion21:29
pleia2ok, floor is open :)21:29
GidgetKitchenFinding Loco pictures that actually represent the communities we are trying to attract?21:29
doctormoOK updated21:29
GidgetKitchenLess white dudes (Like me) + more diversity!21:30
pleia2doctormo: thanks!21:30
doctormoGidgetKitchen: http://www.depthstories.com/globe.jpg like this?21:30
danbhfivewhat is the 5-prong teaching referenced earlier?21:30
pleia2danbhfive: on the main page if you scroll down to the bottom you'll see the 5 topics21:31
doctormodanbhfive: scroll down tot he bottom of this page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Learning21:31
danbhfiveah, ok21:31
doctormopleia2: Looks like that's the end of the questions.21:33
pleia2seems like21:33
GidgetKitchendoctormo: sure - i mean women, minorities, different orientations - people should feel they have an ally in Ubuntu21:33
doctormoGidgetKitchen: We should promote the idea that there are no enemies. ally as a word says more about division.21:34
pleia2GidgetKitchen: do you mean including such pictures in our courses? I think it's a good idea, and if you look at some of the loco team pictures world-wide you'll see more diversity21:35
doctormopleia2: Do we have any photos in our courses?21:35
pleia2doctormo: you have screenshots, I think for advocacy stuff we'll want pictures of happy people :)21:35
danbhfivehow is the overall structure of the courses being decided?  ie, the listings under each of the 5 prongs21:35
pleia2there are more women participating in other countries, what we consider "minorities" in some countries are majorities elsewhere, etc21:35
GidgetKitchensorry my reference is to the lack of women in opensource & mens job to help be an ally21:36
GidgetKitchenI'll be quiet now <:-)21:36
pleia2danbhfive: wiki-like :) it's all community developed and then the actual course developers take that structure and handle it21:36
pleia2BiosElement is handling further documentation on the specifics of how this works21:36
danbhfiveok21:37
pleia2GidgetKitchen: oh no! your contributions are quite welcome, I was just trying to figure out how it was applicable to this specific project :)21:37
BiosElementIf you have any questions related to that , Let me know and I'll figure it out. >.>21:37
doctormoGidgetKitchen: Sorry, I didn't mean to be harsh.21:37
doctormopleia2: Women, the majority minority ;-)21:37
pleia2doctormo: indeed :)21:38
pleia2anything else?21:38
doctormoIn my sysadmin class, It turned out quite diverse. A couple of white males, but also two women, one blind guy and lots of colours. (can't remember which though, blind spot)21:38
pleia2ubuntu pennsylvania tends to work with non-profits in philadelphia, I'd say white males are still over 50% of the people we work with, but not by much21:39
doctormopleia2: Nothing pressing, the goal seems to be: I will teach as much as I can while we tweak the course creation. Once we've got it penned and drafted and reviewed, we'll Go on a marketing blitz.21:39
pleia2doctormo: sounds good :)21:40
doctormoI say we got to the ubuntu-devel mailing lists for someone to head up programming and development, to the forums for desktop and perhaps to locos and planets for marketing and community?21:40
pleia2add bugsquad to programming and dev21:41
doctormoAye, am I writing this down?21:41
pleia2that would be nice :)21:41
pleia2maybe add it to the top of each of our 5 pages? "we'd like to see people from $here and $here2 helping"21:42
pleia2or reach out to them, or something21:42
doctormoWill do that now then, meeting closed?21:42
pleia2yes, I'd say so21:43
pleia2#endmeeting21:43
MootBotMeeting finished at 15:43.21:43
pleia2thanks everyone!21:43
danbhfivethankyou21:43
pleia2we're going to pop over to #ubuntu-learning now, in a few minutes doctormo is going to give us a crash course in our bzr repot :)21:43
