[15:36] <_Trinity_> hi [15:36] <_Trinity_> say I tried the Xubuntu-ppc alternative install CD and it doesn't boot [15:36] <_Trinity_> my fruity iMac DV [15:50] _Trinity_: try #ubuntu-ppc [15:54] <_Trinity_> for? [16:23] _Trinity_, for an answer [16:33] <_Trinity_> I'm just letting those logged onto irc know that there's a problem with the CD. I know how to boot a live CD. I will try the Ubuntu CD next [16:36] <_Trinity_> but thanks just the same [17:25] hi I just installed xubuntu. i've been using ubuntu fr a while but it was a bit slow at times so i decided to try this. i was wondering about installing icons and themes. do they work the same way as in ubuntu? and can i just install the sets i've already downloaded for ubuntu? [17:27] yes. Themes for gnome work [17:28] thanks [17:56] is there anyway to get xfce to display the workspace name when you switch? [19:51] Hello :) [19:52] I was just wondering about dual-booting xubuntu and windows. [19:53] I have the live CD, and love it. Is there a program on the installer that will let me install xubuntu without getting rid of Windows? [19:53] i think xubuntu installer can make a dual boot [19:53] but... [19:54] i think you should first use partition magic and create a partition [19:54] i think intaller can do it automatically? [19:54] and even before that it would best if you make a backup if you don't have one [19:54] yes, make a backup [19:54] i don't know if xubuntu installer can split a partition without deleting your windows [19:56] i think it can [19:56] well, then try to use xubuntu installer to do that (but before that MAKE A BACKUP!!!) [20:08] Can I install xubuntu on my external hard drive? [20:08] it's USB... [20:09] i think yes [20:10] if your computer has got a bios that can boot from an usb drive, yes [20:10] yep, I used to boot puppy linux [20:10] do you want dual boot? [20:10] :D [20:10] Yeah. [20:10] you need to put /boot to hard drive inside computer [20:11] to boot windows witouh external drive [20:12] I was really impressed with how fast xubuntu was. Much faster than XP, for me :) [20:12] xubuntu IS faster [20:13] because it uses a small desktop, XFCE [20:13] i also am using xubuntu on my brother's computer and it's faster [20:13] ubuntu is faster too [20:13] yes [20:13] but xfce is still bit lightier [20:14] xp is not wery heavy, antivirus is [20:14] The partitioner is taking a long time to load, though. [20:14] True. [20:14] * djanatyn runs McAfee [20:15] * danielrm93 uses AVG but hates it. [20:15] Should I (Install them side by side, choosing between them each startup)? [20:15] there is a program for installing *buntu on a pendrive [20:15] USB Creator [20:15] it don't actually install? [20:16] as far as i know [20:16] i have found a deb link [20:16] wget http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/all/usb-creator/download/usb-creator_0.1.10_all.deb [20:16] isn't it for making bootable usb drive? [20:16] i don't know. i have wathed screenshots and it copies a CD on a pendrive. [20:18] so you don't _install_ linux system with that [20:20] i think it's normal installation but /boot need to be on hard disk, that grub can boot into windows without external drive [20:25] are you meaning to have a /boot folder on your hard drive and let grub to load windows if no ext drive is there in the computer? [20:25] (sorry but i'm spanish and it was difficult enough to understand what you said ;P) [20:25] i'm finnish and it's hard to understant what i say :) [20:26] danielrm93, what are you trying to achieve? [20:27] ? [20:27] install xubuntu to external drive [20:30] * djanatyn is trying to achieve it :) [20:30] just launch the normal installer and install to the drive [20:31] instead of selecting your local drive (sda), select the stick (sdb or whatever) [20:32] * danielrm93 has found what "archieve" means in Spanish ;) [20:32] but if boot is on external drive, grub is there and without it you can't boot to windows? [20:33] */boot [20:33] i think i've heard about such a problem [20:34] if you unplug the external drive, there is no problem. [20:34] also, you can decide not to install grub there [20:34] and just modify the grub on your local HD [20:38] * danielrm93 must to leave his computer. He says bye to all. [22:28] O_O [22:30] D<)))°> [23:22] Could someone help me? I recently installed xubuntu and just rebooted. It came up with a GRUB menu, which I used to boot XP. I restarted, but recieved an error: Grub error 25. I managed to get it working by enabling and disabling my 2nd SATA drive cord (which is hooked up to nothing) each time, but if I don't I get GRUB error 25. Does anyone know how I might fix this? [23:25] The error 25 stands for invalid command :/ No idea what causes can make it happen [23:26] Google says it can occur with some old bios that dont handle logical partitions properly, though [23:26] May you paste the output of "sudo fdisk -l" and your /boot/grub/menu.lst file please ? [23:31] I installed xfc4 from the repos and when I try to log in then it goes to the splash screen and is stuck thier even after 5 mins [23:31] *xfce4 [23:34] what's supposed to happen??
