arpuhello any chance to get in this patch in karmic kernel ? http://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=2218000:39

arpuok thx Lint00:41
buckyarpu, are you sure it hasn't already been added to some version of the kernel?00:43

ubottubugzilla.kernel.org bug 12309 in Block Layer "Large I/O operations result in slow performance and high iowait times" [High,Resolved: insufficient_data]00:44
joaopintoarpu, I have seen people here reporting unresponsive system during large files copy on karmic00:44
joaopintoarpu, I am not sure it's related to that bug00:44
arpuyes i have this problem too on jaunty00:44
arpuNo, the patch is queued up for 2.6.32 since it was a rather risky change for00:44
arpu2.6.31. But I'm glad it makes a difference, that means that the starvation00:44
arpuexperienced is largely on the device side. By draining the queue, we prevent00:44
arputhat from happening (or, at least we lessen the effect dramatically).00:44
arpufrom the patch man00:45
joaopintoarpu, you should find or create a bug report on launchpad, and link it to that bug00:45
buckyit's prolly because Linus booted Con Kolivas our only hope of sane scheduling00:45
arpujoaopinto:  ok under what kernel ?00:45
joaopintoI believe there is also an ubuntu kernel channel, not sure that would help to get their attention00:46
joaopintoarpu, check #ubuntu-kernel the pople with the ability to identify/commit that patch should be there00:46
joaopintopeople00:46
TwigaathyThink the problem is the totally different users of linux (re: scheduler)... HPC people with clusters want something totally different to that of a desktop user :o00:47
Twigaathy(I assume you can pick and choose a scheduler when you do a kernel compile? :>)00:47

* Dr_Willis wonders when the 'gnome users' will be deemed smart enough to actually handle the complex task of 'screen saver configuration'01:59
crdlbwhen someone cares enough to implement it02:00
Dr_Willisfrom the flamefest i read on the topic.. the gnome devs in charge of the screen savers considered it too complex a setting for users.. :)02:01
Dr_WillisThat was an amuseing flame war02:01
* Dr_Willis recalls back when flying toasters where 'high tech'02:01
Dr_Williswow... the icon for 'xkill' looks so much nicer now. :)02:02
Dr_Willisits the little things you notice about new releases that make it so much fun02:02
bjsniderhow do you mean screen saver configuration?02:03
bjsnideri mean what the deuce is complex about it?02:03
Dr_Willislast i checked - the screen savers (some of which are configurable) had No settings you could change at all (via the screensaver config gui)02:04
Dr_WillisI just  sort of thoguth about it- because I got kubuntu and ubuntu installed.. and kubuntu installs the other screen savers.. tghat DO have some config options02:04
crdlbthey're mostly from xscreensaver02:04
Dr_Willis'gnome screen saver' vs 'Xscreensaver'02:04
bjsniderother than having the thing come on after x minutes, i'm not sure exactly what needs to be configured02:05
Dr_Willisbjsnider:  it would be nice to actually be able to select a dirctory for the slide show saver to use... or change the 'text' in the 'text scrolling screen saver'02:05
Picibjsnider: each screensaver itself has a bunch of parameters02:06
bjsniderthat can't be changed in some text config file somewhere?02:06
Dr_Willislast i looked - using gnome.. No...02:06
crdlbit can02:06
crdlbbut that's not very fun02:06
Dr_Willisthat was sort of the core/fighting of the  thread flamefest..02:06
wastreli am up grading to koala02:06
PiciThey can be changed by using the xscreensaver-demo to modify the settings02:06
bjsnideryour screensaver should just be a black screen. otherwise you're using power when you don't need to be02:06
Dr_Willisxscreensaver has a lot more configs/gui to change the confiug.02:06
crdlbI have to agree with bjsnider there02:07
wastreli use the bouncing gnome feet02:07
Dr_Willisactually wouldent it be better off to pwer OFF the monitor...02:07
Dr_Willisbut thats not the point.. :)02:07
Dr_Willisbe bext to power off the whole pc...02:08
bjsniderpower off after 15 minutes or something02:08
bjsnidereasy to set up.02:08
bjsniderthat's pretty close to the default ubuntu setup02:08
* Dr_Willis wants his porn slideshow...02:08
Dr_Williserr.. vacation pictures02:08
bjsniderhave a look at what your cpu is doing after some of the busy screensavers02:09
Dr_Willisi dont really care.. if i want flyijng toasters i want flying toasters02:10
Dr_Willisit would be neat to have a screensaver showing my torrents/summary  in a nice purty way02:10
bjsniderwell, write one up02:11
Dr_Willisgot no way to configure it in gnome even if i did.. :)02:11

Polterge|stit is a hack version of Gnome for testing things out and making improvements so now is the time if any to turn in suggestions for improvements on the next Gnome10:42
Polterge|stI read up on it10:42
Polterge|st:P10:42
Polterge|stthat is what apport is10:43
Polterge|stit is to give bug reports10:43
Polterge|stto make suggestions to the coders so that they can make things better10:43
Polterge|stalthough without apturl I can't even use apport and cannot set anything up at all on my system10:43
Polterge|stI would honestly remove apturl and apturl-common and redo them from scratch and then reconfigure every package on the system with dpkg10:44
Polterge|stand redo the setup10:44
Polterge|stthen I would be doing alright10:44
Polterge|stcan't do it until I fix that package though10:44
Polterge|stI will do it later10:44
Polterge|stbbiab10:44
tgpraveen!pulsesrc10:51
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about pulsesrc10:51
tgpraveen!pulse10:51
ubottuPulseAudio is a sound server intended as a drop-in replacement for !ESD - See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio for information and installation instructions10:51
mac_v!info pulsesrc10:52
ubottuPackage pulsesrc does not exist in karmic10:52
tgpraveenam guessing its in another name10:52
Polterge|stI have nothing against Ubuntu but sometimes I think of backing my stuff up and migrating to sidux10:59
Polterge|stit is rolling release11:00
Polterge|stand it is Debian sid11:00
Polterge|stjust rolling release and bleeding edge11:00
Polterge|stalthough it is probably pretty decent anyway because they are selling Cd's of it on distrowatch11:00
Polterge|stlikely it is decent11:00
Polterge|stand since it is Debian based I am sure it is good11:00
Polterge|stit is just more up to date11:00
Polterge|stkind of the way Gentoo is11:01
Polterge|stas soon as some code is released11:01
Polterge|stit allows you to update11:01
Polterge|stit is right on top of those updates with apps and programs and components of Debian11:01
Polterge|stI would say either Ubuntu, Sidux, or Arch if you are not a newb11:02
Polterge|stI'm not really a newb to linux but kind of new to Debian based distros11:02
Polterge|stI used Slackware and Redhat for the longest time11:02
Polterge|stanyway be patient with me because I'm new to the apt-utils, aptitude, and apt-get sort of11:03
Polterge|stnot entirely new but new enough to not know how to manually remove newly "half installed" stuff and new enough to not know the path of where every setting is kept when something is installed and how to manually remove stuff by hand without a script or program11:04
Polterge|stthere are people that know how to do it I am sure but I do not "yet"11:04
Polterge|stbut I am teachable so anyone who knows how if you get a chance you might show me some time11:04
arandHmm, my thing with distros is really "How much will I need to configure it until it works like I want it", and so far it seems ubuntu is the best bet...11:05
Polterge|stI need to completely remove apturl-common and apturl from my system and the aptitude --purge or apt-get --purge does not work11:05
Polterge|stit is because of apturl11:05
Polterge|stif I could just fix this the rest of my system would work11:05
Polterge|stI got rid of most of my error messages the other day but it is giving me an error now about bad Exec format and unable to run postscript11:06
arandBut is apturl really that much except a command for apt-get to fetch *appname* from current repos?11:06
Polterge|stwell I will put it this way arand...11:07
Polterge|stI cannot configure ANY of my packages until I fix it11:07
Polterge|stand that means updates cannot configure11:08
Polterge|stand cannot fully install11:08
Polterge|stnothing can11:08
Polterge|stand THAT is the probelm I am facing right now ... that is all that stands between me and a decently working Karmic11:08
arandAnd you've gone through the whole -repair broken- process?11:08
hfzhi everybody ;D11:08
arandHullo11:08
Polterge|sttell me about the repair broken process11:08
Polterge|stI need to do it with an internet connection11:09
arand"apt-get -f install" or something like that...11:09
Polterge|stin telinit 311:09
Polterge|stI tried that11:09
Polterge|stdoes not fix everything11:09
Polterge|stit won't fully remove the postscript and rest of the old apturl because it cannot interpret it11:09
Polterge|stI think it has to do with an old version of apt-url or something11:10
Polterge|stanyway I screwed up when I tried to install it11:10
Polterge|stwhen the person who designed the apturl update made the package they screwed up and put a period in front of the path name11:10
Polterge|stanyway I manually corrected that on my own system but then apt-get and aptitude were not aware of what I did since I did it manually11:11
Polterge|stso now I cannot use them to remove the program11:11
arandPolterge|st: so you know that it's _one_ specific package that's a nuisance? Tried apt-get remove -f pkgname ?11:11
catweazlePolterge|st: you have seen the link for a solution in the forum, why you don't use this11:11
Polterge|sthmmm11:11
Polterge|stI should try the -f11:11
Polterge|stit is apturl-common11:11
Polterge|stI dunno if it will do it but it is worth a shot11:12
Polterge|stI will show you the error if it gives me one and maybe you can tell me where to go from there11:12
Polterge|stit is updating right now11:12
Polterge|stthe way I am I update a few times daily so my stuff stays pretty current11:12
Polterge|stthat is really the only problem11:13
catweazlehttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apturl/+bug/422825/comments/811:14
ubottuLaunchpad bug 422825 in apturl "Upgrading of apturl to 0.4.0ubuntu3 fails" [High,Fix released]11:14
Polterge|stapturl cannot install because it depends on apturl-common11:14
Polterge|stand apturl-common is half installed11:14
Polterge|stI need to remove it even if it breaks something else basically11:16
Polterge|stthen I will be able to fix it11:16
Polterge|stbut only then since right now it isn't letting me remove it or reinstall it11:16
Polt{laptop}ok I have an idea if nobody can help me fix this http://pastebin.com/m3791cc9011:36
Polt{laptop}I am going to wait until Karmic is brand new and just reinstall it and then migrate all of my user settings and installed stuff and files I wanna back up11:37
Polt{laptop}basically my "home" folder11:37
Polt{laptop}and all of /usr/bin and /usr/local/bin11:37
Polt{laptop}and probably I can just enable the repositories and get all of the 3rd party plugins and restricted drivers and medibuntu stuff via ubuntu-tweak11:38
Polt{laptop}or something to that effect11:38
catweazlePolt{laptop}: your so stupid11:38
Polt{laptop}stop insulting people and talking shit11:38
Polt{laptop}you really have no right to look down on anyone11:39
Polt{laptop}you are not in that position11:39
Polt{laptop}I'm sorry11:39
Polt{laptop}this is the pot calling the kettle black11:39
Polt{laptop}alpha is decent and stable enough to use but my setup is broken ... I wasn't the guy who fux0red apturl's package11:39
Polt{laptop}sorry I'm not going to call that guy stupid but that isn't my fault he messed up the install path11:40
Polt{laptop}so NO I'm not stupid11:40
Polt{laptop}I just installed something setup by someone from a trusted repository and it turned out to be buggy and broke my system ( which I know is a disclaimer thing they mention but ... ) if I need to I can back up my home folder and /etc folder and and a few other things11:41
Polt{laptop}and just install brand new ... freshly and migrate my shit over11:41
Polt{laptop}and as far as I know that isn't stupid ...11:41
Polt{laptop}it is probably a much better idea than wasting my time trying to fix this for now because there is a postscript in there and a rmscript that are failing and are parts of the apturl package left in there that WILL NOT uninstall11:42
Polt{laptop}and the only way to do it is manually11:42
Polt{laptop}by hand11:42
Polt{laptop}ie> find every file and manually remove them and their mention from any config files11:42
Polt{laptop}and THEN purge it11:43
Polt{laptop}or apt-get clean11:43
arandBackup the list of installed packages, usually a good idea; look for guides...11:43
Polt{laptop}I mean I could redownload "ALL" of the packages11:44
Polt{laptop}it would be better for me to wait until it is BETA anyway11:44
Polt{laptop}my system works it just has that one broken function11:44
Polt{laptop}this way at least nothing is hurt and I can still use the system11:44
Polt{laptop}but I would need to make another ext4 partition later on11:44
Polt{laptop}and then migrate my stuff to it11:44
Polt{laptop}and that should do the trick11:44
Polt{laptop}other than that there really isn't alot I would need to do11:45
Polt{laptop}I would delete the old partition and be done with it and have a fresh install11:45
Polt{laptop}if removing this shit doesn't work I'll do that11:45
Polt{laptop}and then it WILL work11:45
Polt{laptop}I'm almost sure of it11:45
o_portista17the gnome bar applet, to control the volume, and the one to show the little bar for the laptop battery, is disabled?11:50
Polt{laptop}it was on mine too at first o_portista1711:50
Polt{laptop}I re-enabled it11:50
Polt{laptop}I think it is a gnome or python problem11:50
o_portista17i used to enable them by adding them to the Panel/Bar, but now, they disappeared11:52
zoraelWhere is asoundconf in Karmic? alsa-utils doesn't contain it12:08
Polt{laptop}I know nothing about this new version of Ubuntu12:10
Polt{laptop}it is totally different and I would have to locate all of its new install paths and default environment variable paths to fix my system I think since the new upgrade broke it12:11
Polt{laptop}it was really already messed up anyway though12:11
Polt{laptop}I'm contemplating installing sidux and migrating my home folder12:11
Polt{laptop}aI could reinstall everything else12:11
Polt{laptop}wouldn't be a problem12:12
Polt{laptop}and sidux is bleeding edge Debian12:12
Polt{laptop}the most up to date and fucntional for what it is so far probably12:12
Polt{laptop}it is sid12:12
Polt{laptop}although it is bleeding edge sid12:12
Polt{laptop}and with rolling release I think12:12
Polt{laptop}which is a bit closer to what I prefer12:12
Polt{laptop}I love the concepts that Gentoo and Arch have but I do like Debian based distros12:12
RoryWhat time is Alpha 5 released, roughly?12:13
Polt{laptop}Rory no tellin' man12:13
Polt{laptop}I am waiting for Beta either or installing Sidux though I think12:13
Polt{laptop}I may just create another partition when beta is installed and migrate my home folder to back my stuff up12:13
Polt{laptop}and then use a fresh install and delete the old partition12:13
Polt{laptop}and then I could just extend that partition anyway12:13
RoryIt's just that when I use daily, or upgrade, logging in dumps me back at GDM12:13
Polt{laptop}and merge it rather12:13
Roryand then kernel panics12:14
Polt{laptop}Rory yeah you have some type of dependency problem12:14
Polt{laptop}your system might be broken12:14
Polt{laptop}you should boot into recovery mode12:14
Polt{laptop}try to dump to a root shell prompt12:14
Polt{laptop}and then try reconfiguring all of your packages via dpkg12:14
Polt{laptop}if that doesn't work you might consider doing what I am doing12:15
Polt{laptop}I am considering a fresh installl and migration of old settings and deleting the old partition and doing it that way since the current one is broken12:16
Polt{laptop}I could just wait until Karmic is complete or something12:16
Polt{laptop}I've considered actually installing Sid and trying it for awhile and doing that when Karmic is final if I really like it12:16
Polt{laptop}either way it would get installed to Grub probably12:16
Polt{laptop}and all of the kernels would be there12:16
Polt{laptop}I could boot into either that way12:16
Polt{laptop}and when Karmic was fixed if I liked it better I could keep it12:17
Polt{laptop}and if not then I could keep sidux12:17
Polt{laptop}but either way my system would be functional12:17
lucas_hey12:46
lucas_i am using karmic koala12:47
lucas_when i use jaunty ubuntu see my ipod touch as digital cam12:47
lucas_but now karmic koala doest see anything12:47
lucas_what can i do12:47
Polt{laptop}yeah Karmic is buggy12:48
Polt{laptop}it is in alpha stage12:48
Polt{laptop}everyone should realize this12:48
Polt{laptop}I would wait to install it at least until Beta12:48
Polt{laptop}Beta 212:48
Polt{laptop}or Beta 3 maybe12:48
Pici!bug12:48
ubottuIf you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its derivatives, please file a bug using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » If that fails, you can report bugs manually at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug - Bugs in/wishes for the bots can be filed at http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-bots12:48
Polt{laptop}I upgraded to Karmic and it broke my system12:48
Polt{laptop}it still boots into X and all but apturl cannot be removed automatically with the apt utils12:49
Polt{laptop}I need to do it all by hand12:49
Polt{laptop}since the remove script isn't working right and is returning errors12:49
ubuntistas12how is karmic so far?12:49
Polt{laptop}and there is some manually installed stuff12:49
Polt{laptop}I'm sure it would be great if I could fix these two packages12:49
Polt{laptop}apturl and apturl-common12:49
hggdhPolt{laptop}, still with the problem you pastebinned?12:49
PiciPolt{laptop}: Did you file a bug for the issue?12:50
Polt{laptop}although still a little buggy but I had a good system to begin with12:50
Polt{laptop}Pici it has already been filed12:50
Pici(I just got here, so I apoligize if this has already been covered)12:50
Polt{laptop}there is a solution but the solution doesn't work for me until I can fullly remove aptutils12:50
Polt{laptop}apturl rather12:50
Polt{laptop}not aptutils12:50
Polt{laptop}I need to totally remove aptutils and its dependencies and then reinstall python central and python-lite12:51
Polt{laptop}if I did that I could probably reinstall all of the other packages and get them all working12:51
Polt{laptop}probably could reconfigure them with dpkg12:51
lucas_no way to get back jaunty12:51
Polt{laptop}nope12:51
Polt{laptop}not as far as I know12:51
Polt{laptop}well there is one way12:51
lucas_hmm12:51
lucas_what is the way12:51
Polt{laptop}either you can use aptitude and revert maybe12:51
ubuntistas12lucas how i karmic so far?12:52
Polt{laptop}or possibly change your repositories12:52
hggdhno. There is no supported way for reverting to a previous release12:52
lucas_ubuntistas12,  i dont uderstand sorryü12:52
lucas_karmic is so buggy12:52
lucas_by th way12:52

lucas_ha sorry12:53
lucas_performance is good12:53
lucas_but is so buggy12:53
ubuntistas12ok12:53
lucas_all program that is default to ubuntu produce bugs12:54
hggdhlucas_, Yes, it is buggy. It is part of the game. Everything is updated.12:54
lucas_okey12:54
lucas_will i ask one question12:55
lucas_when i am in jaunty ubuntu see my ipod touch as digital cam but karmic doesnt mount ipod touc in any ways12:55
lucas_why is that12:55
hggdhbecause it got broken12:55
lucas_but i install winxp with virtual box12:56
lucas_winxp doesnt see my ipod touch12:56
Picilucas_: Have you looked to see if there has been a bug filed for this issue? Or have you filed one yourself?12:56
lucas_this can be reason of that i mean ubuntu doesnt mount ipod touch12:56
lucas_i dont know how to fill about issue12:57
lucas_when my system gives a bug , launch pad page opens12:57
hggdhlucas_, what does winxp have to do with it? You said Linux did not mount the ipod12:58
hggdhor are you using the ipod under Win XP, under VirtualBox?12:59
lucas_yeah13:00
lucas_i want it actually because i search no way to sync ipod with ubuntu13:00
lucas_ipod touch*13:00
hggdhthis virtualbox, is it the OSE or the Sun restricted version?13:00
lucas_i installed winxp bu using virtual box and i said i installed i tunes under winxp then synx ipod touc13:01
lucas_i installed from virtualbox.org13:01
hggdhhave you used virtualbox before to access the ipod?13:02
ravimaddulahi my package manager is not working at all13:02
lucas_i use vbox to boot winxp13:03
hggdhlucas_, I know how vobx works13:03
gnomefreakravimaddula: define not working13:03
hggdhhave you used virtualbox before to access the ipod?13:03
ravimadduladuring installation of skypee  it it occured13:04
lucas_yes13:04
gnomefreakravimaddula: it? what is it13:04
hggdhlucas_, before you moved to karmic?13:04
lucas_ha sorry13:05
* gnomefreak wonders what upstream vbox has to do with karmic support13:05
lucas_no13:05
ravimaddulaunknown error13:05
gnomefreakravimaddula: can you please post the error to pastebin13:05
Piciravimaddula: It literally said 'unknown error'?13:05
* hggdh wonders too13:06
ravimaddulaits saying "reinstall the pakage but i cant find the archeive "13:06
lucas_winxp doesnt se ipod touch because of ubuntu` error13:06
gnomefreaki suggest moving the vbox topic to #ubuntu-offtopic as it is not karmic related13:06
AnAntHello, did anyone run into this issue LP 414795 ? Anyone knows if there's a solution/workaround for it ?13:07
Pici-offtopic isn't a support channel.13:07
ubottuLaunchpad bug 414795 in pulseaudio "PC beep no longer works in Karmic alpha4" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/41479513:07
lucas_sorry13:07
ravimaddulawhen iam trying to install python skypee13:07
gnomefreakravimaddula: that sounds like a sources.list problem but we need alot more info like the sources.list file13:07
hggdhlucas_, we have a problem here: we -- Ubuntu -- do *NOT* support VirtualBox complete, only the OSE version. And the OSE will not work with USB.13:07
=== Eismann is now known as Eismann_
ravimaddulawait i wil type the full description13:08
gnomefreakPici: upstream vbox as it is not related to Karmic and we do not support it where would you suggest it be taken13:08
Picignomefreak: #vbox13:08
PiciThats their official support channel13:08
Polt{laptop}I think I am just going to burn sidux to DVD in case and wait until Karmic is finalized and install a brand new coy side by side with my other partition and migrate my stuff over13:08
Polt{laptop}and then get rid of the old partition13:08
gnomefreakPici: good point i didnt know that was there. ok so everyone with the vbox topic please move it to #vbox13:08
Polt{laptop}that seems like the best plan13:08
Polt{laptop}it would be a brand new install13:09
Polt{laptop}and if it goes awry I go to sidux13:09
Polt{laptop}more bleeding edge and still Debian sid13:09
Picilucas_: Did Ubuntu itself mount your ipod in Jaunty?13:09
Polt{laptop}just more of the choice of KDE over Gnome13:09
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: please dont rant in here13:09
Polt{laptop}bleh13:09
Polt{laptop}nobody is helping me whatda they expect13:10
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: you have not stated a problem but you are ranting about changing OS's13:10
Polt{laptop}I have several times13:10
lucas_Pici,13:10
Polt{laptop}I cannot uninstall apturl and apt-get won't do it13:10
Polt{laptop}neither will dpkg13:10
lucas_it mounts as digital cam13:10
Polt{laptop}or aptitude13:10
lucas_Pici,  it mounts as digital cam13:11
Polt{laptop}I have to manually find all of the paths for where it would say it is installed13:11
Polt{laptop}and then manually remove all of that stuff13:11
Picilucas_: Does it do that in Karmic?13:11
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: newest apurl fixed a few things please make sur enad update13:11
lucas_no13:11
Polt{laptop}I tried gnomefreak but cannot13:11
lucas_Pici,  it doesnt mount ipod touch13:11
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: what is the error?13:11
Polt{laptop}it cannot configure any downloaded packages until I remove that13:11
AnAntPolt{laptop}: tried apt-get -f install13:12
Polt{laptop}yep tried it13:12
Polt{laptop}didn't work13:12
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: what version of apurl?13:12
Polt{laptop}plz ignore the failed apt-get stuff in this ... I was a bit buzzed earlier, just got back from a gig with my band13:12
PiciCan someone suggest a package for lucas_ to run ubuntu-bug against so that he can log a bug for his ipod issue?13:12
gnomefreakubuntu4 fixes the install dpkg problem13:12
Polt{laptop}http://pastebin.com/m3791cc9013:12
ravimaddulaan error occured please run package manger frm right clik menu or apt-get in a terminalto seewhat is wrong .the error message was "unknown error'>'(e:thepackage python-skype needsto be reinstalled, buti cant find archive for it)this usually means tha ur installed pakage has unmet dependencies13:12
hggdhPici, devicekit?13:13
Polt{laptop}my problem is that apturl cannot install because it depends upon apturl-common and apturl-common I think is not installed and not removed13:13
Polt{laptop}it is in a suspended state13:13
Polt{laptop}and kind of half installed13:13
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: that was fixed in version *ubuntu413:13
Picihggdh: Probably a good place to start (at least to get the rest of the debugging data)13:13
Polt{laptop}therefore I need to remove all of its settings13:13
Polt{laptop}I tried to update earlier and it didn't work13:13
Picilucas_: please run: ubuntu-bug devicekit    and enter your issue so that a bug will be filed.13:14
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: you added package name to install -f command please type it the way i do   sudo apt-get -f install13:14
Polt{laptop}yep13:14
Polt{laptop}tried that tooo13:14
Polt{laptop}nothing seems to work13:14
Polt{laptop}it seems like I will for sure have to manually remove all of the apturl stuff13:14
Polt{laptop}by hand13:14
gnomefreak:~$ apt-get -f install apturl is wrong and that is all i see.13:15
Polt{laptop}settings and all13:15
Pici!enter | Polt{laptop}13:15
ubottuPolt{laptop}: Please try to keep your questions/responses on one line - don't use the "Enter" key as punctuation!13:15
Polt{laptop}no haggling plz13:15
Polt{laptop}I am asking for help not a lecture13:15
PiciPolt{laptop}: Its very hard to follow your question if you're pressing enter every three words13:15
hggdhah well. Here we go.13:15
Polt{laptop}well I respond fast13:15
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: still have to abide by the rules of the channels13:15
Polt{laptop}I understand13:15
gnomefreakah that is different error. your error is due to package state almost like you interupted dpkg. but without knowing what happened you can try using aptitude to fix it13:17
ravimaddulaHOW13:17
gnomefreakravimaddula: hold on asec13:18
Piciravimaddula: Can you use a pastebin to post your error instead of transcribing it by hand to IRC?13:18
Pici!pastebin13:18
ubottupastebin is a service to post multiple-lined texts so you don't flood the channel. Ubuntu pastebin is at  http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://tinyurl.com/imagebin | !pastebinit to paste directly from  command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic13:18
gnomefreakravimaddula: do you have the multiverse repo enabled?13:19
gnomefreakit installs here just fine13:19
ravimaddulai dont know eactly iam a nebie13:19
lucas_Pici,  ubuntu-bug device kit you mean ubuntu mailling list13:19
gnomefreakubuntu-bug devicekit i cant remember if there is a - or if it is one word13:20
hggdhravimaddula, why are you running a non-released version of Ubuntu if you are starting on it?13:20
gnomefreakdevice and kit has no space13:20
ravimaddulaiam trying for voip thats y13:20
gnomefreakravimaddula: you will have better luck using jaunty13:21
gnomefreakkarmic is far from release still13:21
Polt{laptop}ravimaddula just wait until it goes beta13:21
Polt{laptop}that is probably what I will do13:21
ravimaddulahow long it will took13:22
Polt{laptop}I am contemplating doing a fresh install and backing up important stuff and copying it over so that everything will run as smooth as possible13:22
hggdhbeta is not released. Beta is alpha with a lot of the issues resolved, but *still* not released. Use alpha or beta on your own risk.13:22
Polt{laptop}ravimaddula you will have to look at the release schedule13:22
gnomefreakbeta will still give new users problems13:22
Polt{laptop}beta is more stable than alpha though13:22
Polt{laptop}usually by that time alot of things are fixed13:22
* Twigaathy recommends sticking to Jaunty until Karmic is actually released rather than moaning about brokenness in an alpha :)13:22
Polt{laptop}yeah I would say stick to Jaunty for now13:23
* hggdh agrees13:23
gnomefreakreleasefinal relfin eis ~ cot. 29th13:23
ravimaddulaok do u have any idean is there any voip can i use13:23
Polt{laptop}the final release will be really nice but beta is your next best bet if you truly want to try Karmic13:23
ravimaddulalike gtalk and yarhoomessenge13:23
Polt{laptop}I do not recommend updating to alpha right now13:23
hggdhravimaddula, skype on medibuntu, for example (Jaunty)13:23
gnomefreakfinal releease is around oct 29th13:24
Polt{laptop}yep13:24
Polt{laptop}this all has me contemplating trying out sidux on my laptop13:25
Polt{laptop}I dunno if I want to yet but it is a live DVD13:25
Polt{laptop}and both Ubuntu's next version and Sidux are based upon Sid13:25
Polt{laptop}one is just more bleeding edge while the other is more stable13:26
Polt{laptop}although I have heard that is not always the case so that is a matter of preference I guess13:26
ravimaddulano package is installing now13:26
hggdhPolt{laptop}, there are many versions on Linux around. You can use any you like, but *please* do not complain about alpha versions. Either help or be quiet.13:26
Polt{laptop}hggdh I think you are getting me wrong13:27
Polt{laptop}you are misinterpreting me13:28
Polt{laptop}I am telling it like it is ... it isn't a complaint13:28
Polt{laptop}alpha isn't stable13:28
Polt{laptop}and I'm not complaining13:28
Polt{laptop}I'm just saying ... alpha will probably break your system13:28
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: please stop hitting enter so often13:28
Polt{laptop}Jaunty is nice, I used it for awhile13:28
hggdhPolt{laptop}, yes, you are ranting. Yes, alpha will probably break our systems. This is well-known. This is expected.13:28
Polt{laptop}ok number 2... nobody in here is sitting up on some great big white horse. I know you guys have some authority and perhaps it is your channel but no judgemental comments plz. I am trying to be patient with you so be patient in return13:29
Polt{laptop}thank you13:29
Polt{laptop}don't be trying to look down upon others13:29
Polt{laptop}I'm just quick to respond and I wish someone could help me and I'm not complaining I just realize that talking is what channels are for and nobody is up right now so I need to talk until people do wake up or get the idea and can help13:30
Polt{laptop}I using irc as it was designed13:30
Polt{laptop}am*13:30
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: no one is but ranting about moving to another dist. is not related to karmic. if you want a very little broken install use Jaunty13:30
Polt{laptop}well it isn't that I am ranting or saying it negatively13:30
Polt{laptop}it is just that I am curious about sidux because it is also based upon sid and so is Karmic13:30
Polt{laptop}and I want to see what the main differences are... no Ubuntu hating going on here13:31
Polt{laptop}I love Ubuntu personally13:31
Polt{laptop}I just am curious about sidux13:31
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: we do not have anythiong to do with sidux try #ubuntu-offtopic for ideas on that13:31
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: either way it is NOT support related and this channel is support for Karmic only13:32
Polt{laptop}honestly I really would like to fix my Ubuntu install without waiting for a final version to be released and doing a fresh install and migration of the /home folder or something13:32
Polt{laptop}fixing it seems like an easier solution and I know people are saying they are getting karmic to work fine for them in Alpha for now if their system already works but that error is what broke my system so not that I am complaining but until anyone can help me with this prob I am forced to wait for the final version of Karmic I think and then just fresh install parallel to my other partition of it and migrate stuff over 13:34
gnomefreakyou really shouldnt use alpha if you can not fix issues by yourself since you will find not everyone is around that can help at times. why dont you try filing a bug report on the problem you are having if it is Ubuntu released it will be helpful13:34
Polt{laptop}that seems like the best idea so far13:34
Polt{laptop}gnomefreak well here is the problem... I'm no dummy. I can fix plenty of things by myself but I don't think most of the really advanced people in here would probably be able to fix this13:34
Polt{laptop}which is why I keep asking because I am guessing someone can fix it but I just haven't met them yet13:35
Polt{laptop}if you were on my system trying to fix it I'm not saying you could not fix it but it is doubtful13:35
Polt{laptop}no offense13:35
hggdhperhaps yes, perhaps no. But you are trying to install the ubuntu4 version, which *should* have fixed it.13:35
Polt{laptop}yes and it won't install13:35
hggdhand still fails for you.13:35
Polt{laptop}hence the solution doesn't work13:36
hggdhergo, a bug is warranted13:36
Polt{laptop}and that solution is the solution ie> we have a loop of problems here13:36
Polt{laptop}and not that I'm complaining but my idea is seeming pretty decent for the time being as it will resolve the problem13:36
hggdh<sigh/>13:36
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: last comment by you about your problem was .:08:15:03:. <    Polt{laptop} > settings and all that was over 20 minutes ago the rest of time you have been offtopic13:36
Polt{laptop}well I mention the problem and am told the same thing over and over and I've already said that stuff doesn't work13:37
Polt{laptop}I've tried it13:37
hggdhplease open a bug. Have you done so?13:37
Polt{laptop}tried that13:38
Polt{laptop}apport won't even work13:38
Polt{laptop}it crashes13:38
Polt{laptop}it is all a dependency prob13:38
Polt{laptop}and a dpkg prob13:38
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: go to launchpad and file it as normal however apport not working sounds like you have a system problem not a package problem13:38
Polt{laptop}and that is causing a python prob most likely13:38
Polt{laptop}gnomefreak : exactly13:39
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: sudo aptitude upgrade   pastebin the command and output13:39
Polt{laptop}this is what I've been trying to say13:39
hggdhmanually open one, and upload /var/log/apt/term.log, and /var/log/dpkg.log13:39
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: than you need to fix the state your packages are in. this is something you did not Ubuntu did.13:39
Polt{laptop}yes13:39
Polt{laptop}I tried to fix a package that was previously messed up from the installer13:40
Polt{laptop}and it messed up the system13:40
Polt{laptop}and now I cannot remove it13:40
gnomefreakPolt{laptop}: than there is nothing we can do for it. start with filing a bug but if you dont know what packages you touched (tried to fix) and what else happened not much anyone can do13:41
Polt{laptop}yeah that is what I was guessing also13:41
Polt{laptop}ok will try to do so13:41

Piciupdate-manager -d is only needed when you want to move from one release to the next development release. An alpha is just a snapshot of the state of the repositories at a predetermined time.  Just keep yourself updated like normal and you'll be there.14:41
Pici!final14:41
ubottuIf you installed a Alpha/Beta/RC version of Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and have been keeping it up to date, then you are already running the latest version of Karmic. To make sure, type « sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade » in a console.14:41

CyberCr33pI am now on alpha 414:41
CyberCr33pand I can't upgrade some packages14:42

knix_how can you tell what version of alpha you are running?14:43
CyberCr33pok now I see new packages14:45
hggdhyou cannot, really.14:47
Piciknix_: You don't, an alpha is a abstract way of referring to the archives at a specific point in time14:47
hggdhyou installed alpha3, then you are at least alpha3. If you have been running it since the start, difficult to say14:47
=== bazookatooth is now known as gbs-wes

knix_I sure hope so14:56
MrSmithHi. What's used for the graphical bootscreen? usplash or plymouth?15:06
Dr_WillisHmm.. Not sure.. :) they tend to change that a lot. Ive not really heard it mentioned what its using this tim,e15:06
knix_anyone here running 9.10 netbook remix15:06
Dr_WillisI tried the Kubuntu netbook remix... and.. err.. dident like it. :)15:07
Dr_WillisMrSmith:  i dont find a Plymouth package or any that even have that term in them.. in synaptic15:08
Dr_WillisMrSmith:  seems to be using Usplash15:08
funkyHatIt's not usplash or plymouth15:09
funkyHatbut I can't remember what it is called :)15:09
Dr_WillisUsplash is installed here according to synaptic15:09
hggdhxsplash?15:10
Dr_Willis!info xsplash15:11
ubottuxsplash (source: xsplash): X based bootsplash. In component main, is optional. Version 0.6-0ubuntu1 (karmic), package size 33 kB, installed size 172 kB15:11
hggdhI do not think we use plymouth (not even if it is in the repos), but there is a work-in-progress for xsplash plus usplash15:11
Dr_WillisOh Joy.. lets load up X to load up X !;)15:11
Dr_Willisoptional... it says...15:11
hggdhyes. The idea is speed up (eventually)15:11
funkyHatDr_Willis: no, it is the same X15:11
* Dr_Willis tends to disable everyting with splasstyff15:11
Dr_Willisright.. so now when the x drivers fail.. :) ya wont even see a splas screen.15:12
funkyHatDr_Willis: what is the point in a splash screen if X isn't working?15:12
Dr_WillisWe need X in the kernel! :)15:12
hggdhyou will. It should fall back to usplash15:12
Dr_Williswhats the point of a splash screen. i wonder..15:12
Dr_WillisThen again.. 9.10 boots SO much faster now  i blink and its booted. it seems15:12
Dr_WillisMy grub delay is longer then the boot up time15:12
hggdhwell, to the casual user, the boot messages are confusing15:13
minimec--> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Boot15:13
Dr_Williswhen in doubt hide things that make  educating people even harder. :)15:13
JanChggdh: especially as they include "errors"15:13
Dr_WillisIm getting some error in the startup messages.. but the splas screen covers them up too fast.15:13
hggdhyes, indeed. For some of us, looking at the boot messages is a way of life. But not for the majority15:13
BoohbahDr_Willis: http://lwn.net/Articles/299483/15:14

Dr_Willisno fancy gimmics i guess. wonder if its ext4 thats helping it out so much.15:15
Dr_WillisDid a clean install just to try ext4  on /15:15
Boohbahyes, this is just explaining how they achieved some of those things15:15
JanCheh, I talked to a guy once who *compiled* linux in *less* than 5 seconds  ;)15:15
* Dr_Willis dosent worry about 30 sec boot times.. when he has 30+ days Uptime...15:15
Dr_Willisstupified some window users with that statement once...15:16
Dr_Willis'30 days+ uptime?' :)15:16
funkyHatJanC: that happens if you already compiled it, because make is clever enough to skip bits that are already compiled ;D15:17
MrSmithLinux has to be always better if u wanna persuade a win user, so i think it's a nice feature xD15:17
JanCfunkyHat: no, he worked at a supercomputing center and compiled it on a Silicon Graphics cluster  :P15:18
Oli``My longest desktop uptime is still what I got under Windows... I had a spell of 90-odd days under vista before I switched to Ubuntu.15:18
Dr_WillisI normally persuade a window user by  letting them come to me asking how to remove some virus for the 5+ th time that month...15:18
funkyHatYou mean you infect their computers so they will install Linux? :(15:19
Dr_WillisThen again. i make good Lunch Money from those window users recovering their video files15:19
IdleOnefunkyHat: unethical but effective15:19
Dr_Willis They manage to get them all by theirselfs.. no help from me15:19
BluesKajOli``, I don't understand this idea of leaving a pc on for weeks at a time ,...if you aren't using it save power etc by shutting it down15:20

Dr_Willisscary how many W these high end video cards pull.15:23
Oli``BluesKaj: well it's a desktop that does some server functions... but we have a few desktops (and the media centre) in the house that just stay on15:23
Oli``Dr_Willis: Indeed. my revo does have a nvidia 9400M in it though and keeps things under 30W15:24
Oli``But my 8800GTS (in my desktop) wastes more than that in heat I'd reckon15:24

BluesKajOli``, yeah , understood ..we use a Lan connected TiVo , that uses 2 pcs as storage for video , pics and music . The pcs are shudown every night but the TiVo is constantly on .15:26

mkoehlerit takes like 5 seconds to reposition it, and jumps like every second16:53
mkoehlerto get to the new location16:53
mkoehleryou can see horizontal lines moving from the bottom to the top of the screen when it initially draws the desktop16:53

guntbertI tried to file a bug and got a page "Timeout error" ("our edge server has a lower timeout...), there is an option "disable redirection for 2 hours". What will this option actually do?16:54
mkoehlerfell back on this setup and it works great16:54
mkoehlerguntbert: https://bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+bug/42181716:56
ubottuLaunchpad bug 421817 in launchpad "can't login with error timeout error (dup-of: 396593)" [Undecided,New]16:56
ubottuLaunchpad bug 396593 in launchpad-code "Person branch listing page timing out" [High,Fix committed]16:56
mkoehlera bug report was filed about that16:57
mkoehlernot sure exactly what the disabling redirection is all about16:58
guntbertmkoehler: thx, didn't think to find a LP bug in LP :-)16:58
mkoehlerhaha yeah, no worries16:59
guntbertmkoehler: and the redirection doesn't do anything it seems :-)16:59
mkoehlerwell, I suppose that's good ;-)16:59
Dr_Willisthe bug reporting system had a bug? :)17:00
nemobug reporting system probably has a lot of bugs17:01
nemopersonally I wish they'd offer a way to link to comments using hash syntax17:02
nemoI should see if there's an enhancement bug on that17:02
nemoso easy to do too, just add an id="commentID" on the link to the comment ID17:02
om26er1today was the release date for alpha5 where is it17:04
mkoehleryeah that'd be convenient17:04
mkoehlerhttp://www.ubuntu.com/testing/karmic/alpha517:04
keith_i upgraded directly from jaunty and now my system is inoperable. When I restart gdm, the screen flickers and goes black. Any ideas?17:05
mkoehlerdoes it send you into low graphics mode?17:05
keith_mkoehler: was that directed at me?17:05
mkoehleryeah17:05
keith_mkoehler: not that I can tell. Just a black screen. No dialogs.17:06
CyberCr33phttp://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/alpha-5/17:06
keith_mkoehler: the virtual ttys work. I am using one to talk here.17:06
CyberCr33pit looks like they are doing some work17:06
CyberCr33pin the ftp17:06
mkoehlerkeith_: hmm...do you have the latest video drivers17:07
keith_mkoehler: I was running nvidia 176 I think, before I did the upgrade17:07
mkoehleryeah, I think I was having a similar problem to what you're having17:08
mkoehlerupgrade to nvidia v18517:08
keith_mkoehler: do I just need to apt17:08
keith_get the right package+17:08
knix_woot woot it's out!!!!17:09
keith_knix_: alpha 5+17:09
mkoehleryeah17:09

knix_ya17:09
knix_just came up17:09
om26er1but they did not release ubuntu moblin remix ?17:09
mkoehlerkeith_:  yeah just apt-get the nvidia 185 packages17:09
keith_mkoehler: which package is it for 185? I usually use jockey.17:10
mkoehlerthere's a lot17:10
mkoehlerjust do sudo apt-get install nvidia-185-*17:10
keith_mkoehler: yeah, that was my thought. :)17:10
keith_mkoehler: How can I tell if it's using it?17:10
mkoehlerwell, sudo apt-get install nvidia-185-* nvidia-glx-18517:10
mkoehlerI think that's it17:10
keith_mkoehler: what about nvidia*185?17:11
mkoehlerkeith_: whatever floats your boat ;-)17:11
mkoehlerthink you may need a * on the far end too though17:11
keith_mkoehler: good point. i'll give that a try. Will that need a reboot? or is a gdm restart enough?17:12
mkoehlerreboot17:12
keith_mkoehler: ok. thanks. I'll be back if it doesn't work.17:12
mkoehlerok good deal17:12
mkoehleryou might also try 2.6.28-11 or something like that17:12
mkoehlerit's the kernel that I'm on right now...I'm still not having great luck with 31-917:12
mkoehlerworking out some kinks17:13
keith_mkoehler: shouldn't that have come with the upgrade?17:13
keith_mkoehler: also, apparently 2 globs are not permissible in an apt-get. :)17:14
mkoehleroh supposedly....I've had it for a week or so17:14
mkoehlerheh17:14
om26er1http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-moblin-remix/daily-live/17:14
om26er1but its alpha didn;t come out17:14
mkoehlerkeith_: just do sudo apt-get install nvidia <tab tab>17:14
mkoehlerjust get all the options you see w/ a 18517:14
keith_mkoehler: that works too17:15
knix_what is ubuntu moblin?17:15
om26er1knix_: http://moblin.org/17:15
om26er1moblin in ubuntu17:15
knix_nice nice17:16
om26er1knix_: moblin is an intel os built specially for thier intel aom and later handed this project to the linux foundation17:17
knix_om26er1: sweet, I think I will have to try it out17:17
knix_I just wish ubuntu supplied the img, not iso17:17
CyberCr33phttp://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/alpha-5/ it's here17:18
om26er1knix_: u can use unetbootin17:18
knix_CyberCr33p: yes, yes it is, w00t.  Dling now17:18
guntbertmkoehler: I managed to get my bug report through - I went via "advanced options" - don't know if that did the trick or if it was only a matter of time anyway :-)17:21
mkoehleraha17:21
mkoehleryeah I'm not sure17:21
mkoehlerI've never encountered that bug before....I always use advanced options though17:21
mkoehlerdon't know if it makes a difference or not17:21
knix_om26er1: If I am using netbook remix, couldn't I install moblin on top of it?17:25
keith_knix_: did kmoehler leave?17:26
mkoehlerkeith_: no17:26
knix_not sure17:26
keith_mkoehler: there you are17:26
knix_lol17:26
keith_mkoehler: got the name close17:26
* mkoehler waves17:26
* knix_ nods back17:26
keith_mkoehler: yeah, didn't work17:26
keith_mkoehler: dmesg shows some nvidia issues though17:26
mkoehlersame issues?17:26
keith_mkoehler: yeah17:27
mkoehlertime for a little pastebinit? =)17:27
keith_mkoehler: um... can I do that from a tty?17:27
mkoehleryeah17:27
mkoehlermake sure to get the package pastbinit17:27
keith_mkoehler: on the plus side, it is using 18517:28
keith_mkoehler: on the down side, it is ignoring my GPU17:28
keith_up side?17:29
mkoehlerheh....what kernel did you boot into?17:29
keith_let me check17:29
keith_31.917:29
keith_31-917:29
mkoehlerhmm17:30
mkoehlerthought about trying an older version just for the sake of testing the video driver?17:30
keith_well, that's pretty sweet. cli pastebin that is17:30
mkoehlerI've had some issues with 31-917:30
mkoehleryeah, it's a handy tool17:30
keith_www.pastebin.com/f32b7183a17:31
keith_Hope I copied that right17:31
mkoehlerUnknown post id, it may have expired or been deleted17:32
keith_mkoehler: there is a line indicating that 173 may be a better choice?17:32
keith_mkoehler: let me check17:32
keith_http://pastebin.com/f32b7183a17:33
keith_try thta17:33
keith_that17:33

mkoehlerah, they should change their dns settings =/17:33
o_portista17does anyone know how do i change the hard drive "name" without have to format it?17:34
oinkboinkhi17:35
mkoehlerkeith_: yeah, sounds like 185 isn't really supported for your graphics card, my bad17:35

keith_o_portista17: the drive label?17:35
mkoehlershould have asked you what card you have first17:35
o_portista17yes17:35
keith_mkoehler: seems like it should still work. :(17:35
keith_o_portista17: what is the filesystem?17:36
o_portista17ntfs17:36
knix_om26er1: do you like moblin better than the standard netbook remix?17:36
o_portista17and with Gparted, it will delete my files, at least, its the warning that i receive17:36
keith_o_portista17: ntfsprogs has a tool I think, or you can use gedit. I don't think you can do it while the drive is mounted though.17:36
keith_er17:36
keith_not gedit17:37
keith_tired17:37
keith_gparted17:37
oinkboinkthere known problems with ati-cards(4670 hd) and 9.10?17:37
keith_o_portista17: if you boot into a live cd and run gparted, it should be fine17:37
keith_o_portista17: assuming you can't umount it17:37
o_portista17but i cant umount it17:38
o_portista17but, when i put the new label, if i confirm it, it gives me the warning, that i will lose all the files17:38
keith_o_portista17: How are you trying to change the label in gparted? I have never received a warning like that.17:39
keith_mkoehler: so... how do I use 173? just remove the higher ones and install 173?17:39
mkoehlerkeith_: I'd be much more concerned with "no nvidia graphics adapter found"17:39
mkoehleryeah17:39
o_portista17keith_,  ,i umount it, and then second mouse click on the HD, and chose the option "label"17:39
AnAntHello, is seasoned_geek here ?17:40
mkoehlerkeith_: I actually have to run for right now...I'll be back in a little bit.17:40
knix_AnAnt: doesnt look like it17:40
keith_mkoehler: ok, thanks17:41
keith_o_portista17: that is strange... one sec17:41
mkoehlersudo do-release-upgrade17:41
mkoehlererrm....wrong channel17:41
keith_o_portista17: do you have ntfsprogs installed?17:42
o_portista17yes17:43
keith_o_portista17: I believe there should be an ntfslabel program included with that package17:43
o_portista17yes, and its installed as well17:44
keith_o_portista17: have you tried using that?17:44
o_portista17no, but i will try now17:44
keith_o_portista17: I have to restart now. I will be back.17:45
o_portista17ok, tks17:45
jcoleanyone here know the reasoning for not including 64bit flashplayer in the next ubuntu release karmic?17:46
eternal_pjcole: same reason it always is...32-bit is more "complete" as the story goes17:50
jcoleeternal_p: what does that mean17:50
eternal_pjcole: there are some features missing from the 64-bit version17:50
eternal_pfrom what I have read, they decided to nsiswrap it to give everyone the full flash experience which can be missed on the 64-bit version17:51
AnAntjcole: ndiswrapper17:51
jcoleeternal_p: like what?17:51
eternal_pno idea17:51
AnAntoops17:51
eternal_p:)17:51
jcoleeternal_p: im still confused17:52
eternal_pgoogle my friend...google :)17:53
jcoleeternal_p: if i download it manually and install it to my /home it works perfectly, im looking at the Settings here and don't see anything missing17:53
SwedeMikeI never got my 8.10 to properly run flash until I installed the 64bit alpha plugin.. then everything worked17:53
jcoleSwedeMike: ditto17:53
jcoleare there some closed source bits/drivers that depends on the 32 bit version?17:54
keith_What does it mean if X tells me that there are "no screens found?"17:55
jcolekeith_: it means hit ctrl-alt-f1 and run "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart"17:56
jcolekeith_: you must have started another X server by accident17:56
keith_jcole: yeah, no...17:56
keith_jcole: :)17:56
keith_jcole: I upgraded to karmic from jaunty and it has cast a curse on my system.17:57
keith_jcole: I downgraded to nvidia 173 because it was complaining about 185, now it is saying no screens found.17:57
keith_jcole: restarting gdm doesn't solve the problem17:57
jcolekeith_: run "X -configure"17:58
jcolekeith_: as root17:58
jcolekeith_: then copy the new xorg file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf17:58
eternal_pquick question: how can I backup my wireless keys for when I do a clean install17:58
jcolekeith_: then run "nvidia-xconfig"17:58
jcolekeith_:  then "/etc/init.d/gdm restart"17:59
jcolekeith_:  all this as root17:59
jcoleeternal_p: wireless keys are in gconf17:59
keith_jcole: I did sudo X -configure [file] and recieve a (slightly) different error18:00
eternal_pjcole: which file?18:00
jcolekeith_: run "ps -ef | grep X"18:00
keith_jcole: the new xork18:00
keith_g18:00
jcolekeith_: sudo kill the X process18:00
aciculaeternal_p: i just copy over my home, but it's probably in gnome settings directory?18:00
jcolekeith_: kill {pid}18:00
keith_jcole: returns no results18:01
eternal_pacicula: I have so much crap in my /home I want to do a clean install and just bring over what is absolutly necessary, nothing more18:01
keith_jcole: screens found, but none have a usable configuration18:01
aciculaeternal_p: gnome settings is the best i got, or gnome keymanager/ring, but dont know what files correlate to that18:01
eternal_pthanks...shame there is no clean export/import18:02
jcoleeternal_p: file are under ~/.gconf/system/networking/connections18:03
jcolefiles*18:03
eternal_pjcole: ty18:03
jcoleeternal_p: you can also run "gconf-editor /system/networking/connections" and view manually18:04
keith_jcole: any thoughts on my error now?18:05
jcoleeternal_p: its good practice to have / and /home on separate partitions... then, you can jusr rename your old home dir and install a new ubuntu... just dont format your new /home when installing18:07
jcolekeith_: did it create a new xorg.conf.new file?18:07
keith_jcole: actually, I see now that it says "module nvidia not found"18:08
jcolekeith_: you need to reboot when you install nvidia modules18:08
keith_jcole: thought I did. brb though.18:08
eternal_pjcole: that is how I do it18:08
eternal_pbut I rename my home directory from the live CD, I start blank and copy over only what I need18:09
jcoleeternal_p: whatever works :)18:09
eternal_pjcole: always works :)18:09
eternal_pas long as I accidentlyi don't format my /home partition18:09
blackxoredisn't alpha 6 released?18:11
Pici518:11
keith_jcole: same issue18:12
billybigriggerkeith_, sorry for jumping into the conversation18:14

keith_billybigrigger: :)18:14
keith_billybigrigger: yes, I did18:14
blackxoredPici, doesn't runs on virtual box18:14
billybigriggerkeith_, open a terminal18:15
billybigrigger$ dkms status18:15
billybigriggeryou might need to rebuilt the modules with dkms18:15
keith_billybigrigger: it complained about 185, so I uninstalled it and installed 17318:15
billybigriggers/rebuilt/rebuild18:15
billybigriggeryeah you need to build it with dkms18:15
keith_billybigrigger: how do I do that?18:15
billybigriggerwhat did dkms status say about the 173 driver?18:17
keith_billybigrigger: dkms status?18:17

billybigriggerlook above :)18:17
billybigrigger<billybigrigger> keith_, open a terminal18:17
billybigrigger<billybigrigger> $ dkms status18:17

billybigriggernvidia, 185.18.36, 2.6.31-7-generic, x86_64: installed18:18
jcolekeith_: well, run "X -configure" again and just use that file (dont run nvidia-xsettings)18:18
billybigriggershows that nvidia  185.18.36 is built for kernels 30-{7,8,9}18:18
keith_jcole: I tried that18:18
jcolekeith_: it should just use the nv driver18:19
keith_billybigrigger: it says vbox*install and nvidia, 173*added18:19
billybigriggeradded, NOT installed18:19
billybigrigger:)18:19
jcolebillybigrigger: $ dkms status18:19

billybigriggerkeith_, you need to install the module18:20
jcolebillybigrigger: have you got vdpau working? im still futzing18:21
billybigriggerkeith_, $ sudo dkms install -m nvidia -v 173XXXXX18:21
billybigriggerreplace xxx with whatever version of nvidia you'r running18:21
billybigriggerkeith_, what kernel? i think you need to pass kernel version in there too18:21
billybigriggerkeith_, $ sudo dkms install -m nvidia -v 173XXXXX -k 2.6.XXXXXX18:22
billybigrigger$ uname -r18:22
billybigriggerwill find your kernel version18:22
billybigriggerjcole, no, i haven't tried18:23
keith_billybigrigger: Error! Could not locate nvidia.ko... must run dkms build first...18:23
billybig1iggerkeith_: sorry phone rang, outside on the laptop now18:26
billybig1iggerdid you get that module installed?18:26

billybig1iggerwas there a log created?18:28
keith_billybig1igger: yes... make.log. Tracking it down now.18:28
billybig1iggerand really, what was the problem with 185? if we're going to go through troubles getting nvidia drivers working, they should atleast be the newest :P18:29
billybig1iggerwhat kernel are you running?18:29
keith_billybig1igger: it said they were ignoring my gpu, and that the legacy 173 supported my card.18:30
keith_billybig1igger: 31-918:30
keith_billybig1igger: the log doesn't seem too helpful to me. want a pastebin?18:30
billybigriggerwhat gpu?18:31

billybigriggersudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.3118:32

billybigriggersudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.31-9-generic18:33
billybigriggerwhat gpu do you have?18:33
keith_billybigrigger: already have the headers, so nvm18:34

serpbad knittl18:35
knittlserp: looks like the problems ppl with OEM install get18:36
knittlbut restart doesn't work. not even with sysrq, i can only change loglevels18:36
billybigriggerkeith_, you need gpm installed to copy paste in tty18:36
EagleScreen_keith_, you can copy and paste lines in vim editor18:36
keith_billybigrigger: http://pastebin.com/f381afca318:36
knittlkeith_: with screen18:36
knittli'm also using a dell laptop18:36
keith_Stupid Dell18:37
knittli tried old kernels, the new kernel (which doesn't show up in grub, i edited it manually), a self-built kernel. normal and recovery mode18:37
EagleScreen_DKSM was did by Dell18:37
knittlso i did 6 boots already, now i'm on a live cd18:37
keith_EagleScreen_: was did?18:38
knittllet's mount my root18:38
billybigriggerkeith_, nvidia-173-kernel-source18:38
keith_billybigrigger: ooh... I have a mouse cursor in my tty! :)18:38
billybigriggerkeith_, now you can copy paste from tty's18:39
billybigriggernot from x though18:39
keith_billybigrigger: who needs X. :p18:39
billybigriggerkeith_, so if you install links, you can browse the web and copy paste text from links to your tty18:39
keith_billybigrigger: all i need is elinks and mutt...18:39
billybigriggerthere ya go :P18:39
keith_billybigrigger: ok, so what about the source?18:40
billybigriggerkeith_, 64 or 32bit?18:40

knittlif i switch to vt1 i can see some boot strings18:41
* mkoehler laughs18:41
EagleScreen_i mean it was made by Dell keith_18:41
knittlkeith_: yes, i'm happy if i get it to work the next few hours :D18:41
keith_billybigrigger: how does copy and paste work in a tty?18:41
billybigriggerctrl-c ctrl-v18:41
keith_billybigrigger: right click seems to paste18:41
billybigriggeror middle mouse too i think18:42
billybigriggeroh yeah, just highlight the text, and middle click18:42
billybigriggeror right in your case18:42
billybigriggerdownload that file, then sudo sh NVIDIA.blahblahblah....run18:42
billybigriggerin a tty18:43
billybigriggerthen you should be able to use the "nvidia" driver18:43
keith_billybigrigger: can the copy and paste not cross ttys?18:44
billybigriggershould be able to18:45
keith_billybigrigger: doesn't seem to want to. I just typed it manually. I'll figure the copying out later. :) one issue at a time.18:46
knittlsoo, anybody experiencing the same problems? :D18:48
keith_billybigrigger: be back in a few. It's downloading now.18:48
knittldpkg: too many errors, stopping18:51
knittlhm, could be a problem …18:51
knittlcan i somehow chroot my system and repair those?18:51
billybigriggeryou could18:53
knittlor are there better solutions?18:54
keith_knittl: define "better" ;)18:55
knittlok, i think i chrooted. i never used chroot before18:55
keith_knittl: I have, but don't ask me for help. :)18:56
knittl_difficult to match all 3 ;)18:56
knittl_but in the end it should just work18:56
knittl_dpkg was interrupted, run dpkg --configure -a18:58
knittl_ok, let's do this *g*18:58
keith_billybigrigger: wow... that was easier to fix than I expected. :) Though now it is telling me that a hard disk is failing... do I need to worry about that? :D18:59
knittl_too many errors. still? :-$18:59
billybigriggerjust your drive has bad sectors18:59
billybigriggeri have one like that too18:59
billybigriggeronly 3 months old18:59
billybigriggeryet my 2 year old drive is fine :)18:59
keith_billybigrigger: this thing is like... 4 or 5 years old. :D18:59
billybigriggerwell then yeah, it probably does have bad sectors18:59
keith_billybigrigger: pre-fail? that's a scary sounding diagnosis. :p19:01
knittl_seems like dependency issues in apt19:02
knittl_or rather dpkg19:02

billybigriggeryou won't be able to boot to ubuntu with windows bootloader19:04
keith_where did the windows 7 bootloader install to?19:04
mkoehlerknix_: billy's right...windows 7 bootloader won't let you boot into ubuntu19:05
knix_well I thought I installed karmic correctly side by side, but it looks like I blew away the windows partition19:05
mkoehleryou can add windows7 to you grub bootloader19:05
billybigriggerknix_, install windows first, then ubuntu19:05
mkoehleryou're going to need more than the bootloader ;-)19:05
billybigrigger!grub219:06
ubottuGRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager in Karmic. For more information on GRUB2 please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Grub219:06

Tumiei found a small bug @ alpha 519:08
Tumiewhile the installation, there was something new, that showed stuff about ubuntu19:08
knittl_hm. open acpi failed (but only a warning)19:09
Tumiepidgin was one of them, but pidgin isn't installed and replaced with empathy instant messenger19:09
keith_Stupid empathy19:10
Tumiekeith_: what is stupid about empathy?19:10
keith_Tumie: Doesn't work properly for me. :p19:10
Tumiekeith_: stupid :p19:10
knix_good point Tumie19:10
Tumieknix_: thanks, but... are you a developer?19:11
Tumiei need the developers to know it, so they can fix it :p19:11
mkoehleryeah, pidgin is better imo19:11
knittl_ok, google shows i'm not the only one with the problem …19:12
keith_Tumie: I tried to get used to it, but after I got around to adding facebook chat, nothing seemed to want to connect... also, it didn't seem to want to notify me of new messages, and ctrl+tab doesn't work like in pidgin... never ever tried getting myspace chat working.19:12
keith_mkoehler: my only hope is that empathy will develop faster if it is the primary messenger.19:12
keith_Tumie: I also don't like how it names all my accounts the same thing "new xmpp account" etc19:13
mkoehlerwell, I can understand that19:13
Tumiekeith_: you can remove it, and install pidgin :)19:13
keith_Tumie: Already done, minus the removing part.19:13
mkoehlerthat's what I did...also how I'm talking to ya'll19:14
keith_mkoehler: you are on irc with pidgin?19:14
mkoehler(yes I know) empathy has support for irc too19:14
mkoehleryes, I am19:14
keith_mkoehler: never really could get used to pidgin irc19:14
mkoehlerwhy not?19:14
keith_mkoehler: haven't tried it enough I guess. just not what I am used to.19:14
mkoehlerheh, well, I came from ircii19:15
mkoehlerso I like it quite a bit better19:15
keith_mkoehler: I tried ircii briefly before giving up and using irssi.19:15
keith_mkoehler: which I am still on. I'll probably switch to xchat-gnome at some point.19:15
mkoehlerah, I never tried irssi...it's pretty popular there19:15
mkoehlererrm, just it's pretty popular*19:15

ubottuLaunchpad bug 423875 in ubuntu "About Ubuntu says something about Pidgin, but Empathy is installed." [Undecided,New]19:16
Tumiehoped i added it correctly19:16
keith_lol, apparently19:16
keith_Tumie: seems like the documentation always lags behind until the official release though19:17
Tumiebut this isn't documentation :)19:17
DanaG    from xml.dom.ext.reader import PyExpat19:17
DanaGImportError: No module named ext.reader19:17
Tumiethis is the 'about ubuntu', that is showed while installing ubuntu19:17
keith_Tumie: while installing? do you mean from the live cd? System->About Ubuntu19:18
Tumieno19:18
Tumieif you install Ubuntu Alpha 5, you get something new while installing it19:18
Tumieit shows stuff about ubuntu, what it has, how safe it is. etc.19:19
keith_Tumie: oh, I haven't tried Alpha 5 install. That's cool. Sounds more like Windows now.19:19
Tumieits like what windows has while instaling it19:19
DanaG!info python-xml19:19
ubottuPackage python-xml does not exist in karmic19:20
keith_Tumie: It's like... I know Ubuntu is awesome... that's why I am installing it.19:20

euthello19:20
Tumiekeith_: why are people installing windows then? :P19:21
eutwhere is the xorg.conf file for the latest karmic?19:21
euti cant seem to find it in /etc/X11/19:21
SwedeMikeeut: Xorg doesn't really need it anymore, not with default settings.19:21
mkoehlereut: there's autoconfiguration now19:21
mkoehlerxorg.conf files are still respected, but not necessary19:22
keith_Tumie: touche19:22
eutSwedeMike, mkoehler: hmm, wel then how can i increase my screen size?19:22
DanaG!find oldxml19:22

eutSwedeMike, mkoehler i need it to be at least 3200x1080 (dual monitor setup)19:23
SwedeMikeeut: from within the gui, there are settings for that.19:23
mkoehlereut: ditto19:23
eut:o19:23
eutyou _must_ use gui to configure x19:23
eutbackwards :P19:23
SwedeMikeI'm sure you can run some tool to create default xorg.conf, nivida drivers tool will do it for instance.19:23
mkoehlerwell if you'd prefer, go ahead and make an xorg.conf file from scratch ;-)19:23
mkoehlerit'll still work19:23
knittl_ok, my package manager is totally borked. how can i fix it? looks like it hasn't downloaded everything for upgrade19:24
eutah ok19:24
mkoehlerknittl_: what's wrong w/ it?19:25
knittl_mkoehler: apt-get tells me i have unmet dependencies, aptitude tells me it wants to remove 69 packages dpkg --configure -a tells me it stopped processing because of too many errors19:26
knittl_if i try to boot from my hdd i get a blank screen with a blinking cursor (before x starts or anything). i don't even have a shell, and recovery mode ("single" boot option) doesn't work either, i encounter the same symptoms19:27
knittl_my dist-upgrade must've been aborted right in the middle19:28
mkoehlersounds like it19:28
knittl_yeah, it was. it even gave me an error message. but i couldn't restart update-manager because it spit out some python errors19:29
mkoehlerI don't have any quick fix for that...typically I just play around with removing the unnecessary software then installing the stuff I need19:29
knittl_that happens when the system is half-upgraded, lol19:29
mkoehlerthen running the upgrades afterwards19:29
mkoehlersorry :-\19:29
knittl_i would be really happy to do my next fresh install for 10.0419:30
knittl_where are all the devs? i'm glad if i can help troubleshoot and make ubuntu better (= no crashes while updating)19:31
knittl_would be great to get it fixed till midnight :D19:31
knittl_the sooner the better19:32
knittl_ok, aptitude tells me there are a lot of unconfigured packages19:33
knittl_but it will still remove 69 packages19:33
knittl_i don't know if they're needed19:33
knittl_so i'd welcome any guru who knows about this stuff better than me19:34
mkoehlerwell, some likely are required19:34
mkoehlerbut if removing them helps to get your computer back to a state where apt-get / dpkg works, then it's worth it19:35
knittl_there's no garuantee it will work after removing them19:36
eternal_pafternoon all...just did a fresh of alpha 5...I have nvidia drivers installed (had to force an install manually) but enabling desktop effects seems to hang/crash, thoughts?19:38
knittl_eternal_p: be happy, i can't even start X or a shell19:39
knittl_well ok, let's remove all that packages and save the list to a text file before doing that19:40
knittl_can't. dpkg kicks in and complains about errors :(19:42
DanaGwow, my firefox profile dir has 4058 sqlite.corrupt files!19:43
knittl_wow, my system is not booting …19:43
mkoehlerthat doesn't make much sense....less you removed the kernel19:44
knittl_ok, my kernel is booting but hangs somewhere so i don't get a shell or X. ergo: i can't do anything19:45
aciculawell what do you see19:45
knittl_i'm happy with a shell to fix things (and have all things there like irc, music, etc)19:45
knittl_acicula: a blinking cursor on a blank screen19:46
aciculait's blinking, ergo it lives :)19:46
knittl_if a switch to vt1 i see some normal bootmessages, the last line being "Done."19:46
knittl_on a working system the prompt would be after that line19:46
knittl_all other vt's are blank19:46
knittl_ctrl-alt-del is not working, sysrq-b is not working19:47
aciculathis when booting in safe mode?19:47
knittl_yup, same in safe mode19:47
knittl_tried with 3 different kernels19:47
knittl_the old one, one of mine, and the new one19:47
knittl_the new one doesn't show up in grub, btw19:48
knittl_oh yeah, it also hung up when i tried to restart my old system19:48
aciculaidunno tbh19:48
knittl_and update-manager told me it stopped installing because of too many errors19:48
knittl_rerunning was not working, because python (x)or upgrade-manager was upgraded so i only got python errors19:49

danbhfivehehe, ok22:50
Lars_Gspeaking of fixed, I don't have my netbook right now with me (where I have karmic going on) what's the kde version we're pumping in there so far?22:51
ActionParsnip!info kdebase-bin22:52
ubottukdebase-bin (source: kdebase): core binaries for the KDE 4 base module. In component main, is optional. Version 4:4.3.1-0ubuntu1 (karmic), package size 306 kB, installed size 1380 kB22:52

ActionParsnipLars_G: i wouldnt recommend kde on a netbook22:52
Lars_Gis 3.1 the version that is expected to ship?22:52
Lars_GActionParsnip: I'm using mainly the gnome UI remix, but I use some kde applications. the kde netbook remix is pretty nice but still has some effort to go into it22:53
ActionParsnipLars_G: i use lxde, nice and light in ram22:53
Lars_Glxde?22:53

Lars_GIf 4.3.1 is the verion that will go into karmic final, is there anywhere I can ask for a patch to be backported into it?22:54
Lars_GActionParsnip: I'll check, but I like the launcher ui in gnome-netbook a lot22:54
ActionParsnipLars_G: alt+f2 do you mean?22:54
Lars_GActionParsnip: No, it's called netbook-launcher it's the UI with the tabs on the left22:55
ActionParsnipLars_G: gotcha, i see22:55
ActionParsnipLars_G: theres lxauncher http://wiki.lxde.org/en/LXLauncher kinda similar22:56
Lars_Git's more "small device" than a normal gnome/kde desktop, and yet it's usseable as a real computer unlike kde-netbook and moblin which are geared to handheld stuff in my view, not for small computers22:57
danbhfiveLars_G: I haven't used it much, but I'm starting to like Maximus as firefox takes up allot of screen space without it22:57
ActionParsnipi'll check kde-netbook sounds funky22:57
knittlhm, i'm missing a lot of the icons22:57
Lars_Gdanbhfive: I'll check it, but what I am tending to do right now is to send FF into fullscreen with f1122:57
Lars_GActionParsnip: the metapackage us called kubuntu-netbook22:58
Lars_GActionParsnip: It's based off plasma, and it's very interesting, but in my view it's more geared to a device that will work as a PDA or PIM than a full pc22:58
Lars_Ghmm22:59
billybigriggerknittl, we all are22:59
Lars_GActionParsnip: LXLAuncher looks decent, I might give it a spin22:59

Lars_GActionParsnip: I've always been a sucker for lightweight desktops in smaller pcs, my first laptop used fluxbox, and the second one xfce 422:59
Lars_Gdanbhfive: what is it? a ff extension?23:00
danbhfiveLars_G: no, its part of gnome UNR.  It is the thing which changes the standard windows decorators, or something23:01
danbhfiveLars_G: it might be part of kde UNR too, Ive no idea.  Its a UNR project23:01
Lars_Gdanbhfive: will it really affect on netbooks? since the title bar and decorations go on the top middle of the netbook bar anyhow23:02

Lars_Gdanbhfive: sorry to be a pita but could you shorten it for me please? bit.ly or any shortening will do23:05
arandI'm trying to _only_ get the source for an (updated) package in KK using jaunty, I've added "repo: karmic-updates main" What kind of apt magic would get me the source, or do I need the "karmic main"  source repo as well?23:05
danbhfiveLars_G: oh, well, maximus is just part of the current UNR interface.  It gets rid of the title bar and auto maximizes windows.  It might work some other magic with the window decorators23:05
Lars_Gdanbhfive: so maximus is what provides what's working right now. ok23:06
