MTec007im looking for a compatible internal wifi card for my dell laptop00:50
MTec007(xubuntu compatable)00:50
SiDihey MTec00700:50
SiDiWanna buy a dell lappy ?00:50
MTec007i know this isnt the shopping channel, but i dont know where to look00:50
MTec007maybe00:50
SiDiI have a Dell vostro 151000:50
SiDiWifi iwl394500:51
SiDiit works fine, the only problems i have with it is that i cant rmmod the module without a system crash00:51
SiDibut thats not the kind of thing one ever needs to do00:51
SiDiit scans networks fine (its not WONDERFUL but i do get quite a lot of networks) and it doesnt randomly disconnect or w/e00:51
nicklas_http://imagebin.org/6293700:53
MTec007SiDi, is it on the cheap?00:53
SiDion the chip / cheap ?00:54
MTec007cheap; is the laptop cheap?00:54
SiDihm, its average00:54
SiDii think its worth its price.00:55
MTec007it sounds like i cant afford it :) but thanks00:56
MTec007do you know where i can find that internal wifi card?01:00
SiDiNope :/01:02
MTec007;) ok01:02
SiDiit's a quite common one though :P01:02
SiDiHP sells some laptops with Intel cards too01:03
SiDiDell has other laptops with other intel cards01:03
SiDiYou got a desktop PC or laptop ?01:03
MTec007laptop, dell inspiron 1200, intel01:03
nicklas_quake live time01:37
redDEADresolveMTec007, minipci?01:42
MTec007redDEADresolve, i dont know01:42
redDEADresolveMTec007, dell inspiron 1200 are you sure?01:43
MTec007positive01:43
MTec007bought it in may 200501:44
redDEADresolveok im looking at the google results01:45
megloi'm hiv positive01:45
MTec007well since i know its a minipci now i think i can find one01:45
redDEADresolveMTec007, The area that the Inspiron 1200 really needs improvement is in the connectivity. Wireless networking has become extremely common yet the system lacks integrated wireless. In order for users to get this ability, they must purchase a separate PC card to use the only type II PC Card slot.01:46
MTec007but i need to make sure its gonna play nice with xubuntu01:46
MTec007i have a card that plugs in the side01:46
MTec007for wifi01:46
megloralink usb wifi01:47
megloerr01:47
meglowell what is that good Taiwanese manufacturer01:47
meglodoesn't require binary firmware01:47
meglovery well supported01:47
MTec007well usb is fine and all, but the card im using now works fine but im trying to move the wifi to internal01:48
meglough computers01:48
redDEADresolveMTec007, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC_Card#Type_II01:48
MTec007except for when i stress my network connection.. then i just loose all connection01:48
redDEADresolveMTec007, no internal for you they only connect via pc card type II01:49
MTec007then what is the empty socket in my laptop for?01:50
redDEADresolveMTec007, true that i shand corrected it will be internal with a lump standing out01:50
MTec007i already have the lump sticking out. i have the wireless card01:51
redDEADresolvei was being to literal but now you know what kind of card you are looking for, theyre not too common anymore. try ubuntu compatibility list or googling models you find on ebay forsale01:51
MTec007i want something internal now if there is a card to fit inside the laptop.. where the other empty socket is01:51
MTec007ok01:52
MTec007well its past my bed time. got to get up for work at 401:53
mikubuntuguys i can't figure out how to save a video file that arrives in email, like a .wmv or mpeg3 , etc... to later upload to youtube or facebook anybody willing to teach me?08:15

nicklas_hey, anyone knows the difference between nexuiz-linux-x86_64-glx and nexuiz-linux-x86_64-sdl ???19:50
googeekHey there. My Audio worked out of the box with Ubuntu, but doesn't in Xubuntu. I was wondering if anyone knows the package I need20:08
hermitcrabredHi!20:56
SiDihi21:03
nicklas_hello, i installed some games, and did a reboot, when the desktop was about to start the panels they tried to start a few times before giving up, im using xubuntu and have checked, xfce4-panel package is installed21:19
nicklas_anyone knows why this happens?21:21
invisime(relative) newbie seeking help getting sound working. anyone willing to dare the dreadful waters?21:53
invisimeor, you know, for that matter, anyone around? :P21:53
invisime(I know how quiet these places can be.)21:53
SiDihi invisime22:14
invisimehey, SiDi.22:14
SiDiWhat's wrong with the sound currently ? What sound card do you have ?22:14
SiDiDid you previously install gnome / pulseaudio ?22:14
invisimemaybe?22:14
SiDiYOur sound card is maybe ? :P22:15
invisimeyeah, it's one of those off-brands.22:15
invisimeI forget the succinct command to list all my pci connections.22:15
SiDilspci | grep Audio22:15
invisime... yeah. I feel dumb.22:15
SiDiIf it's a STAC92xx or an Intel HDA it should be easy to find out what's wrong22:15
invisimeas soon as I said "list pci" I remembered. :P22:15
SiDiif its a more elaborated card then i won't have any clue :P22:16
invisimeit's an intel ICH622:16
SiDiOkies22:16
SiDiSo what are the symptoms ?22:16
invisimevolume icon in the system tray is greyed out.22:16
invisimewhen I click it, I get this dialogue messages:22:16
invisimeGStreamer was unable to detect any sound devices. Some sound system specific GStreamer packages may be missing. It may also be a permissions problem.22:17
invisimemessage, singular.22:17
SiDiOkey22:17
SiDi(This is not a virtualbox guest ? A  real machine, and the sound card does exist ?)22:17
invisimeyeah, this is just my laptop.22:17
SiDiOkey22:17
invisimeand the sound was working on this install, but not recently.22:17
invisimeand I didn't notice when it stopped, so I don't know what the catalyst was.22:17
SiDiSo, you installed Xubuntu, did you install anything else ? (mostly, Kubuntu or ubuntu-desktop)22:18
invisimenope.22:18
invisimejust some software.22:18
SiDiCan you please type 'aptitude search pulseaudio' and tell me if there is a 'i' or a 'p' in the beginning of the line22:18
invisimep.22:18
SiDiOkey22:18
SiDiI suppose you regularly do system updates ? There probably has been a kernel update recently ?22:19
invisimeI am pretty current on my updates, yes.22:19
invisimenone pending, in fact.22:19
SiDiOkey. So the most likely reason is that the last kernel update made your drivers go berserk :P22:20
SiDiCan you please give me the brand of the laptop ?22:20
SiDiAnd the result of uname -r ?22:20
invisimeit's an oldish dell.22:20
invisime2.6.28-15-generic22:20
SiDi(I'll need the exact model name, sorry)22:20
invisimeis "precision m70" specific enough?22:21
SiDiHM lets hope22:21
SiDiThat's really old isnt it ?22:21
invisime4ish years.22:22
SiDiType this also please :cat /proc/asound/card0/codec\#* | grep Codec22:22
SiDiyou can paste it on http://paste.ubuntu.com22:22
invisimeI don't seem to have an asound folder.22:22
SiDi:/22:23
invisimesome other symptoms.22:23
SiDiCan you please try to reboot on an older version of the kernel ?22:23
invisimerunning 'alsamixer' returns 'alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory'22:23
invisimerunning 'aplay -l' returns ''aplay: device_list:217: no soundcards found...'22:24
invisimehow do I select the older version?22:24
SiDiin grub, there should be several entries22:26
SiDiwith older versions listed22:26
invisimeI'll brb then.22:26
SiDiokey22:27
SiDijust before22:27
invisime?22:27
SiDican you please paste me lsmod | grep snd ?22:27
invisimenone.22:27
SiDiweird22:27
SiDia complete lsmod then please ? :)22:27
invisimehttp://paste.ubuntu.com/267561/22:28
SiDi(you can reboot now, we'll see if you have more modules loaded on an older version)22:29
invisimemk.22:29
invisimesound's working. :P22:33
SiDigreat:)22:33
SiDinow, we'll check for error messages in your logs, and report the bug22:34
invisimethis is on the old kernel though.22:34
SiDiYeh, there is probably something preventing your 'snd' module from loading with the new kernel22:34
invisimethat's annoying.22:35
SiDiI have strictly no idea which log to look in :/22:35
invisimesince this kernel apparently isn't playing nicely with my graphics card. >_>22:35
invisimerunning in low graphics mode, atm.22:35
SiDihah :x22:35
SiDiwhat GPU is that ?22:36
invisimedunno. some nvidia card.22:36
SiDi(i have no idea where to look for errors, so i suggest you file a bug in https://bugzilla.kernel.org with a detailled description of the problem, the kernel version with which it stopped working, the distro name, and the output of the dmesg command)22:37
SiDiThe low graphics mode might come from the fact that your restricted nvidia drivers got updated to work with the new kernel22:37
SiDithe guys on kernel.org's bugzilla are quite responsive, so they should probably ask you soon to give them some more accurate information, and they'll then be able to work on the bug22:38
invisimehold on, I'm going to reboot X.22:39
megloI don't think the 'Action Buttons' widget works to lockscreen when you have a different login manager installed(like SLiM), is lockscreen handled by GDM or something?22:44
cellofellowhi22:44
SiDimeglo: its handled by the power manager22:44
SiDiby the screensaver X_X *22:44
megloSiDi,22:44
meglowat22:44
meglooh22:44
megloyeah22:44
megloThat is what I thought, gnome screensaver yeah22:45
megloBut, I can't invoke that from screensaver-settings or the lockscreen action button that is on the panel by default :\22:45
invisimeso yeah, sound's working now.22:46
SiDi_meglo: what was the last message you got from me please ?22:46
invisimeand the graphic's card is not sucking so much.22:46
meglo<SiDi> by the screensaver X_X *22:46
SiDi_invisime: don't forget to report the bug please22:46
knome!bugs | invisime22:46
ubottuinvisime: If you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its derivatives, please file a bug using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » If that fails, you can report bugs manually at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug - Bugs in/wishes for the bots can be filed at http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-bots22:46
cellofellowI'm on GNOME but the people in #ubuntu are idiots. I have a problem where every so often (not right now, thankfully, but it was half an hour ago) my dbus-daemon session bus starts hogging ~30% of my CPU. I can't find any strange processes connecting to it and googling helps none. Any ideas how to fix this? The only way to get it to stop is to log out and the restart dbus from the console.22:46
meglopower management is inside gnome's screensaver settings it seems, SiDi22:47
SiDi_meglo: okey, so yeah, the lock screen ability is managed by gnome-screensaver | xscreensaver | xlock | xlockmore22:47
megloSiDi_*22:47
SiDi_meglo: gnome-screensaver does a pit of screen power management but gnome-power-manager actually does it22:47
SiDi_invisime: if i were you i would file it directly at bugzilla.kernel.org22:47
SiDi_they have about 5700 open bugs on launchpad for the kernel so it will be processed faster22:47
megloSiDi_, but the 'Action Buttons' for the xfce panel doesn't offer to select what screensaver/locker I want to use, and only lets me click it uselessly.22:48
SiDi_cellofellow: no idea.22:48
SiDi_meglo: only one of these applications can run at a time. they all provide the same (standard) interface for screen locking22:48
SiDi_there is no reason why it wouldnt work with gdm uninstalled, except maybe if slim doesnt launch gnome-screensaver ;)22:49
megloSiDi_, well I should look into Xfce docs then, the user interface isn't configurable or working22:49
SiDi_knome: i fear that bug wont be reported :P22:49
megloSiDi_, I believe I--22:49
megloOh, maybe so22:49
knomeSiDi_, me too :P22:49
SiDi_knome: what a shame for HIM on next ubuntu update :P22:49
SiDi_meglo: is the screensaver running ?22:50
knomeSiDi_, i suppose you should walk through the bug reporting progress with people ;)22:50
megloSiDi_, apparently not,22:50
SiDi_knome: true... especially since bugzilla isnt very friendly :/22:50
SiDi_meglo: you may be able to just add it to autostart in apps -> settings -> Session & boot22:51
knomeSiDi_, maybe -devel22:51
megloI also need to restart my session apparently, switched back in networkmanager and gdm22:52
meglobut i'll just leave it22:52
megloand install xlockmore or something22:52
meglosession management? i just use startx and open screen in an xterm :X22:53
meglook I just launched it from a run dialog and magic works, added it to xfce session then22:54
SiDi_meglo: use startxfce4 then22:57
SiDi_it'll launch your XFCE session and your XFCE autostart defined apps22:58
megloSiDi_, that is what I use in slim, but it wasn't starting gnome-screensaver. But now it is, or should.22:58
SiDi_great22:58
nicklas_hey, how do you manage the menu in xfce?23:11
knomein xfce 4.6 (xubuntu 9.04) there is no menu editor, unfortunately23:12
SiDi_heya zniavre23:13
zniavregood evening SiDi_  and all-others23:13
knomezniavre o/23:13
zniavrebe back soon23:14
SiDi_What are you doing zniavre  ? :P23:15
zniavrei feel lost it's horrible23:15
SiDi_switched to xubuntu ? :D23:15
zniavreim trying to kill top panel to put tint instead23:16
SiDi_right click, properties23:16
SiDi_(well, 'Configurer le panneau' exactly)23:16
zniavreit comes back each relog23:16
SiDi_Then click on the remove button of the Panel window that popped up23:17
nicklas_there is no way to install a menu editor then?23:17
zniavreit's exactly what i did23:17
knomenicklas_, not really a 100% working one, no.23:22
nicklas_knome, so this means that youre gonna have to live with having useless shortcuts in the menu?23:23
knomenicklas_, there is the xml editing way.23:23
nicklas_knome, gui?23:24
knomeno gui.23:24
nicklas_knome, or text file?23:24
nicklas_knome, ok, how then?23:24
knometext file, yes.23:24
megloknome, not a 100% working one, but there is something?23:24
megloa front end GUI to the xml23:24
megloperhaps?23:24
knomethere is *no* menu editor for xfce 4.6. some menu editors work a bit similarly, but they are gnome menu editors thus you'd need to edit the xml files by hand anyway.23:25
SiDi_meglo: the current ubuntu menu editor only works for GNOME. The author said he would look into XFCE compatibility23:25
nicklas_knome, and where do i find the files?23:25
knomenicklas_, /usr/share/applications23:26
megloSiDi_, avant?23:26
SiDi_alacarte23:26
megloah yeah23:26
knomenicklas_, tbh, if you're gonna edit the files you're going to need to google anyway, so i think you could find this out also yourself. no meaning to be rude, but there's not a lot information we can give you.23:26
SiDi_http://wiki.xfce.org/howto/customize-menu23:27
megloSiDi_, hmmm maybe there is something cutting edge in dev to compile23:27
SiDi_meglo: i doubt so :P23:27
megloDragging and dropping menu items onto the tray for quicklaunchers and a menu editor would be something I should paypal xfce4's developers for23:28
zniavremmm it was not realy a good idea all apps runing twice now23:28
meglothe tray -> the panel23:28
zniavrebut top panel disapear23:28
SiDi_zniavre: you clicked on save ? :P23:29
zniavreyep but i forgot to close some apps before23:29
zniavre:o)23:29
meglois all this stuff on xfce's menu generated from debian-menu or what23:30
knomemeglo, your message have been forwarded to the xfce developers.23:30
megloknome, waaaaaaat23:30
nicklas_weird, the apps arent in /usr/share/applications anymore, but still in menu23:30
knomemeglo, yes? ;)23:31
SiDi_nicklas_: dont erase files in /usr/share/applications23:31
SiDi_copy them to .local/share/applications and add the line to hide them in the menu23:31
SiDi_see the faq i posted above23:31
knomemeglo, once you have money, you can paypal JPohlmann. ;)23:32
knomemeglo, 01:34 +JPohlmann: Drag and drop of menu items to launchers is something we want to support in 4.8.23:34
megloNice23:34
megloI'm googling for mailing list mentions about alacarte supporting xfce23:35
knomemeglo, 01:35 +JPohlmann: Alacarte will work with 4.8. An alacarte version based on garcon is vaguely planned.23:37
megloI remember reading about garcon but it was just on a bullet point, I can't find a project page23:38
meglothey have a 'libxfce4menu' apparently23:39
SiDi_which will be replaced by garçon, afaik23:39
SiDi_good night people23:39
megloso one can use alacarte or some other one written for it23:39
meglooh23:39
knomemeglo, if you want to talk more about xfce menu editing, join #xfce-dev23:41
megloknome, do they have a commit bot?23:42
knomemeglo, feel free to ask yourself. you are now voiced and can talk in the channel23:43
megloknome, they aren't scary like gnome developers are they23:43
knomemeglo, not really :)23:44
knomei have to go to sleep now. good night everybody!23:53
