jinzougenI'm looking for some software to help me back up my data to another box on my network. I see that there are quite a few backup utilities in the repository... does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?00:14
jinzougenPlease tell me why you would recommend one over the other if you do.00:14
jinzougenI'm just looking to keep a remote copy of my home directory on a remote (kubuntu) machine.00:14
Fanfarejinzougen: so u dont need a full blown backup-server thingy, but also dont want to write your own scrips...00:16
Fanfarejinzougen: try backup-manager, some simple config, and runs via cron00:16
jinzougenI could, but I figured they made software specifically for this purpose, so why not take advantage of it.00:16
madberryjinzougen: you could try http://one.ubuntu.com00:17
jinzougenhmm. Would rather not have it be a cron job. I'm backing up a laptop and I'm not necessarily on my network on a regular schedule.00:17
Fanfaremadberry: looks like an online backup...?00:19
Fanfarejinzougen: no need to have it cron, its just default.00:19
madberryFanfare: Backup and sync. backintime might also be an option00:19
Fanfaremadberry: did u use on.ubuntu.org yet?00:22
madberryFanfare: Not yet I still have to set it up. Prob. will later today.00:22
Fanfarei wionder if they hold complete /home/<user> online ? how many space do they offer?00:23
madberry2GB for free or an account with 10GB for $10 a month00:24
Fanfaremadberry: ok, 2gb is fine for free... but what about security? interesting anyway...00:25
madberryFanfare: I'm not sure about security which is why I'll be checking it out.00:26

sulo_seppaI recently installed kubuntu 9.04 amd64, and wanted to grab KDE 4.3, so I added it so my sources and tried to install it, but it gave me a bunch of errors and froze, so when I rebooted it would go through the splash screen and only show akondi (?) loading, and then it will throw an error and I have to reboot. I booted into recovery but found that trying to fix the broken packages doesn't work.04:09

BluesKajlukas__, got any suggestions for mounting ntfs as a user in fstab ? I've researched this for a few days now , but yet to find a solution.20:41
lukas__BluesKaj: that should be easy20:43
lukas__wait20:43
BluesKajlukas__, this is my fstab entry : /dev/sda1    /media/windows   fuse.ntfs auto,gid=1002,umask=0002    0    0  I can mount the partition with sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/windows , but I'd like it to automount at bootup.20:45
lukas__BluesKaj: oh, sorry, ntfs ...20:47
lukas__BluesKaj: which driver do you use for ntfs?20:47
lukas__ntfs3g?20:47
BluesKajfuse ?20:47
lukas__BluesKaj: how do you mount it usually?20:48
BluesKajlukas__, i think ntfs-3g is the default now20:48
lukas__then ...20:48
BluesKajin the cli20:48
lukas__BluesKaj: what does it do?20:49
BluesKajsudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/windows works fine but I'd like to automount it at bootup20:50
lukas__BluesKaj: if you add it into fstab and try mount /media/windows20:50
lukas__...,20:50
lukas__?20:50
BluesKajlukas__, read above , i have an entry in fstab20:50
lukas__yes, then try just mount /media/windows20:51
lukas__I mean the command20:51
lukas__# mount /media/windows20:51
BluesKajwhere20:51
lukas__or sudo mount ...20:51
lukas__if the fstab entry is ok then it will be mounted20:51
BluesKajyes i do that now but, id like it to automatically mount with the command each time i boot into linux20:52
lukas__I understand, the reasons for not mounting it at boot time can be: 1) defect in /etc/fstab 2) not problems to mount, just not at boot20:53
BluesKajyeah, I saw something about not umounting correctly at halt20:54
lukas__so, umount /media/windows20:54
lukas__then try exactly: # mount /media/windows20:54
lukas__(the command after #)20:54
BluesKajwith the # ?20:55
lukas__no20:55
BluesKaj i'm getting a red 0 when i add the mount20:56
BluesKajat the end of the line20:56
lukas__red 0 ?20:56
BluesKajyes20:56
lukas__BluesKaj: look at man ntfs-3g20:57
lukas__there is example line to fstab20:57
lukas__/dev/sda5 /home/user/mnt ntfs-3g ro,uid=1000 0 020:57
lukas__uid should be your id20:57
BluesKajthere's no uid20:58
BluesKajjust a gid , group, I believe20:58
Robbi38hello20:59
lukas__BluesKaj: then use gid20:59
lukas__BluesKaj: you can get it from id command20:59

knuck887hey all, i've got a 50 gig partition of ubuntu that's nicely set to my preferences. i've got an installation disk for both ubuntu and kubuntu, and want to install kubuntu through synaptic package manager21:24
knuck887will installing it through there take gigs out of my ubuntu partition already installed? or take free space from the 110 gigs of the old windows partition i accidentally deleted earlier21:25
senaknuck887: do you mean you want to install kde graphical user manager21:27
senaknuck887: because synaptic is package manager and as far as i know you can not install operating system with it21:29
knuck887i was looking from this21:29
knuck887s21:29
knuck887http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/kde21:29
FloodBotK1knuck887: Please don't flood, use http://paste.ubuntu.com to paste, don't use Enter as punctuation.21:29
knuck887but basically, i had 160 gigs for windows, a friend accidentally deleted that thinking he was giving ubuntu 50 gigs, now 110 gigs of free space are floating around21:30
knuck887i want to install kubuntu and expand the ubuntu partition21:30
knuck887i'd rather not format my drive again, but i wouldn't really mind21:31
James147knuck887: you dont really need to install both kubuntu and ubuntu on 2 partitions, you can install kde and gnome on the same system and switch between them at the login screen21:31
reboot_how do i change from the ati driver to the vesa driver?21:32
James147knuck887: the only difference between kubuntu and ubuntu is the default packages they are installed with21:32
knuck887yeah, that's basically what i was picking up from that website. but by doing that, would that take disk space out of my ubuntu partition or the 110 gigs of free space on the disk?21:32
senaknuck887: or you can install kubuntu on new partiotion, you can even split that 110GB partition and install windoze as 3rd os21:32
knuck887eh, i gotta get a new os disk for windows later21:32
knuck887i'm on an hp and they didn't send a back up disk for whatever reason21:33
senaknuck887: if you install kde it will take only space from your 50GB ubuntu partition21:33
James147knuck887: if you install kde on a ubuntu system then it wont touch other hard drives, it will use space thats on your current drive21:33
reboot_do anybody know how i can change from the ati driver to the vesa driver?21:33
senaknuck887: it will be also not more than 100MB or less21:34
knuck887so would i have to install it from the disk at start up to take it from the empty disk space?21:34
James147knuck887: what i suggest is to expand the ubuntu partition to your desired size and install kubuntu-desktop through synaptic21:35
knuck887that's what i'd prefer to do. is there anything you can tell me about how to expand the 50 gig ubuntu partition?21:35
reboot_gparted21:38
knuck887i'm guessing that's an application to look up21:38
reboot_just instal it with synaptic and use it21:39
reboot_it should be quite logical21:39
reboot_unless it has changed drastically21:39
knuck887yeah, i've got it pulled up now, so i'll play around with it21:39
knuck887thanks everyone21:39
reboot_i need to change from the atidriver to the vesadriver, how can i do it?21:40

senaare you in text mode .. console21:44
reboot_in recovery21:44
BluesKajreboot_, the vesa driver won't be used until the ati driver is removed , and usually a reboot is required21:44
reboot_ok, guess i will try that then21:44
reboot_btw. is there no longer a way to do this manually?21:44
reboot_without uninstalling the driver?21:45
BluesKajnope21:46
reboot_guess the world moves backwards afther all...21:46
senareboot_: i think there is a way21:47
senayou need a generic xorg.conf file21:47
senareboot_: you can find some with google or alike21:48
reboot_guess i can try that21:48
senathen replace your existing xorg.conf file (back it up first) then restart21:48
senait si in /etc/X11/xorg.conf21:49

Brhad56cutre: when you close out of amarok and dragon and restart firefox, then does it work?23:29

Spacemanvlc has a lot of options for different sound systems, you need to select the advanced options and then play with the sound settings23:30
cutreyes, it does work23:30
cutrei ve played with them, but it didnt make a diference23:31
Brhad56cutre: Sounds like your having a sound configuration conflict.  You might simply try uninstalling pulseaudio and see if that works.  >sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio23:32
