slestakhey guys.  setting up a tinyproxy + dansguardian server at home for this kids.  the docs at ubuntu.com (community, i know) appear to have a typo.  wonder if im reading it incorrectly.  one place says to change dansguardian from the default port of 3128 to 8888, then it says to test your proxy on 8080?  this makes no sense to me.02:49

slestakwell, regardless of how it looks, it works.  strange.02:52
slestakwhen i proxy to 8888, it doesnt work, to 8080, it does filter.02:52

DizzyDoohi, just trying to set up my static IP with my fresh Ubuntu Server installation by following this tutorial: http://bit.ly/EPWDi . I have confirmed I have put in my ISP's nameservers correctly, but I am unable to ping google, what should I look into?07:50
AnAntsoren: yup07:50
KurtKrautDizzyDoo, are you able to ping 208.69.38.160 ?08:03
DizzyDooKurtKraut, that ip, like all the others, are 'unreachable'08:05
KurtKrautDizzyDoo, your ISP does not offer a DHCP server... you have to configure the static IP manually?08:05
DizzyDooKurtKraut, is that not what I have been doing?08:06
KurtKrautDizzyDoo, I am asking if your ISP has a DHCP server from where you could pick up the IP address easily instead of being oblighated to configure it manually.08:07
DizzyDooKurtKraut, I'm sure it does have a DHCP server, but I specifically require a static IP08:08
KurtKrautDizzyDoo, I am asking this because DHCP servers can offer a static IP address too, based on your MAC ADDRESS.08:09
blue-frogDizzyDoo: we got that. does it work when your IP is set on dhcp?08:09
DizzyDooKurKraut, ah okay, I had to phone my ISP in order to get a static IP though, so I don't think it's based on my MAC address (although it could be)08:11
DizzyDooblue-frog, it works when set on dhcp, so clearly, something I have typed in is not correct, but I have no idea what08:11
jmarsdenDizzyDoo: Default route may be incorrect?08:11
blue-frogDizzyDoo: the error message is   connect: network is unreachacble, correct?08:11
DizzyDooblue-frog, correct08:12
blue-frogDizzyDoo: is your card up and running?08:12
blue-frogDizzyDoo: ifconfig eth0 up08:12
KurtKrautDizzyDoo, do you have more than one ethernet card in your hardware?08:12
DizzyDooKurtKraut, just the one08:13
DizzyDooblue-frog, the card is running, yes08:13
blue-frogDizzyDoo: what's it's address?08:14
DizzyDooblue-frog, how can I find out it's address?08:15
blue-frogDizzyDoo: wow08:15
KurtKrautDizzyDoo, please tipe in your terminal the following command: ifconfig08:15
blue-frogDizzyDoo: you just set it , right? you don't rememeber where you set it?08:15
KurtKrautDizzyDoo, the information display is exactly how your ISP told you to set?08:15
KurtKraut*displayed08:16
DizzyDooblue-frog, set 'it'? forgive me, I have no idea what 'it' is, I should of thought it quite clear I have very little clue at all about linux here08:16
DizzyDooKurtKraut, the information in the nameservers resolv.conf is as my ISP has provided. I don't think that's the main problem right here, more to do with the network IPs I have provided08:17
jmarsdenDizzyDoo: /sbin/ifconfig eth0     will display info about how eth0 is configured... KurtKraut was suggesting you check that, not DNS.08:18
DizzyDoojmarsden, ah right, I'll try that now08:18
DizzyDooright, it's running on inet 192.168.1.10008:20
blue-frogDizzyDoo: ping 192.168.1.100     gives what?08:21
DizzyDooblue-frog, a series of successful pings are displayed, and their times taken08:22
blue-frogok08:23
jmarsdenDizzyDoo: 192.168.1.100 is probably not the static IP your ISP gave you... so either you have a router between the Ubuntu machine and the Internet, or you misconfigured that eth0 interface08:23

DizzyDoojmarsden, I do have a router between my Ubuntu machine and the internet, yes08:23
jmarsdenThen that router is where you configure the static IP, not in the Ubuntu machine :)08:23
DizzyDoobut the router has the static IP configured correctly, surely. I'm connected to freenode right now through it08:24
jmarsdenDizzyDoo: Does the router provide DHCP to your local LAN?  If so, set the Ubuntu server eth0 back to using DHCP.08:24
DizzyDoojmarsden, I'll do that now08:25

Jeeves_As in, offer kvm to customers?13:50

sorenJeeves_: Sure.14:10
Jeeves_soren: What do you use for management and access for customers?14:10
sorenttx: Do you remember why Eucalyptus need to be able to tunnel ethernet frames? EBS is specific to an availability zone, so why does it need tunnelling between clusters?14:10
sorenJeeves_: You may need to refine your initial question. I work for Canonical. kvm is supported in Ubuntu by Canonical.14:11
sorenJeeves_: Canonical does not offer hosted virtual machines.14:11
ttxsoren: IIRC in multicluster use, EC2 provides a VPN to other availability zones, for any purpose14:11
ttxnot just EBS14:11
Jeeves_soren: :)14:11
sorenttx: Yes, but ethernet tunelling seemed to be a requirement.14:12
sorenttx: ...and I'm not sure why that is.14:12
ttxsoren: I think that EC2 provides layer-2 tunneling to that effect... so Eucalyptus mimics it.14:12
sorenttx: If they could live with basic IP tunneling, they could just use the in-kernel tunelling.14:12
Jeeves_soren: Nevermind, I think I know the answer allready. :)14:12
Jeeves_There does not seem to be a usable frontend for kvm to do 'hosted' kvm14:13
ttxsoren: that would not be strictly equivalent to what EC2 provides. But I agree with you it should satisfy 95% of use cases14:13
sorenJeeves_: /If/ I were to offer virtual machines to customers, I'd probably use something along the lines of zinn: http://www.niftyname.org/about/14:13
ttxsoren: question is... do we prefer unsupported (and using a broken encryption scheme) that does exactly the same as what EC2 does... or something that works but isn't strictly equivalent14:15

erichammondjjohansen: Nope (regarding Jaunty). I submitted a few bugs so people can respond officially: bug 429122, bug 429121, bug 42912017:55
uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 429122 in ubuntu "ec2: Build Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty AMIs" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/42912217:55
uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 429121 in ubuntu "ec2: Build new Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid AMIs" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/42912117:55
uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 429120 in ubuntu "ec2: Build new Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy AMIs" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/42912017:55
jjohansenerichammond: yeah I saw those, but I haven't made it through all my mail yet this morning17:55
smoserjjohansen, the priority right now is karmic. if we can get fully kernel team serviced and updated kernels to hardy, that is a "very nice thing"17:56
jjohansensmoser: yes17:56
smosererichammond, note, that outside of kernel, the amis will have all other SRU updates applied.17:56
erichammondsmoser: Yes, I understand that.  Somebody asked a question about the future which is why I brought up Hardy.17:56
jjohansensmoser: I only asked because erichammond brought up the VOIP under Jaunty+Intrepid kernel17:57
smoser"someone" ? or you :)17:57
smosererichammond, i'll respond to your query on the mailing list regarding service.17:57
erichammondsmoser: You: "beyond alpha, assuming our kernel is fairly solid, i dont forsee much else kernel related, jjohansen or erichammond do you ?"17:57
jjohansenerichammond: no17:58
jjohansenerichammond: as time permits I plan to pursue the pv-ops kernel issues with amazon17:58
smoserin short, the priorities in order are karmic, hardy, intrepid, jaunty.  but once karmic releases, there is not a lot of use for jaunty and intrepid. and17:58
smoserand once karmic is released, the top priority will be karmic+1/10.04, but hopefully we'll have some more time to address the inadequacies of the other releases.17:59
digilordDoes anyone here do network installs?  I am having a prob doing them where Ubuntu is not able to write a temp file for the dhcp client on the system being installed.18:06
erichammondPerhaps I misinterpreted this a bit too widely in anticipation :)18:10
erichammondsmoser, jjohansen: I think all my questions are answered for this meeting now.18:10
erichammondsmoser: I'd like to summarize my understanding of what the plan is so you can clarify if I'm incorrect:18:10
erichammondYou do not plan to publish any further AMIs until Karmic Alpha 6.18:10
erichammondAlpha6 should include the loop module fix one way or another.18:10
erichammondAlpha6 should include the kernel modules.18:10
erichammondYou will test the libc fix before Alpha6.18:10
erichammond?18:10
erichammondsmoser: Hm, taking a second glance at your comment about bug 429169, you didn't commit to anything but did want more discussion, right?18:10
uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 429169 in vm-builder "ec2: Include kernel modules in AMIs" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/42916918:11
smoseri dont want to promise the kernel modules in the image right now, but i'll look at it.18:11
smoserand we absolutely need a solution18:11
smoserif they're not there, I'll document how to get them (adn it should be a cut and pastable command line tha tcould even be run from a user-data)18:12
erichammondsmoser: If it's that easy, why not add the commands to the vmbuilder --exec script so that the kernel modules are included in the image as they are with other AMIs?18:13
smosererichammond, i thought exec script for vmbuilder ran at build time18:14
erichammondsmoser: Exactly.18:15
smoserif so, then it would pull those into the image, which wastes space for uec portion18:15
smosersee my comment there (the bug) about less than ideal for uec18:15
erichammondsmoser: Ah, I just woke up for this meeting and didn't see that comment yet.18:17
erichammondWell, my position would be that for Alpha6 we should make it work as expected for EC2 and slightly inconvenience the UEC folks :)18:17
erichammondI think it's more than an inconvenience not to have the kernel modules available on EC2.18:18
smoser<sarcasm>really ? that surprises me</sarcasm>18:18
smoseri agree18:18
smoserwe'll figure something out.18:18
erichammondWe can document all we want and answer questions on the mailing lists, but this only reaches a small percentage of the user population.18:18
smoserthe really nice thing about soren's "copy from initrd -> /" proposal is that it can work for ubuntu and non-ubuntu images (with a little enlightenment in user space)18:19
smoserand also, it has no negative side effects on uec18:19
erichammondsmoser: Yep, it's pretty cool, which is why I suggest adding the kernel modules to the image be a temporary workaround.18:20
erichammondsmoser, jjohansen: Ok, it's time for me to wake up and get on with my day job.  Thanks for a great meeting.18:21
jjohansenerichammond: thanks for comming18:22
Jeeves_soren: niftyname.org seems nice, but unfinished18:39
Jeeves_the serverpart is not documented at all18:39
Jeeves_There's no documentation on how to set it up18:39
digilordI am guessing that this is not the channel for Ubuntu server setup/deployment help?18:46
Jeeves_digilord: I think it is18:47
digilordHmmm ok18:47
Jeeves_digilord: What's your problem exactly?18:47
digilordI am doing a netbooted install and the installer is failing because it can't write the temp files for the dhcp client.18:48
kaushalScottK: is it safe to use https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Prevu/ to build mysql 5.1 ?18:52
ScottKIt's not supported, but the author of Prevu is an Ubuntu developer who generally knows what he's doing.18:54
digilordJeeves_: I think the problem is in the ramdisk part of the kernel init line.  http://pastebin.com/d1539f296 is from the installer.  Did I miss an option?  It's also not skipping the keyboard selection and using what is in the init line.19:00
Jeeves_digilord: We pxe-boot daily, and that works fine19:02
digilordJeeves_: So there isn't anything wrong with my kernel init line19:02
Jeeves_digilord: We use this line19:03

Jeeves_That works fine19:03
digilordJeeves_: What are you using for the install repos? http, ftp, nfs, tftp?19:07
Jeeves_hmm? We pxe boot19:07
Jeeves_fetch the initrd and kernel via tftp19:07
digilordJeeves_: Ahhh BOOT not INSTALL19:07
Jeeves_We boot the installer ...19:07

smoserbug/launchpad wizards (kirkland or anyone) , i've a bug that is currently open (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-on-ec2/+bug/398568).  is there a way to indicate that this bug is not relevant to the current devleopment release (karmic) without nominating it for a release ?19:12
uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 398568 in linux "ami-bbf514d2: Sometimes does not start booting (empty console output, no network)" [Critical,Confirmed]19:12
smoserie, this bug is now "fixed released" on karmic (or close to it) but I'd like to indicate somewhere that it affects jaunty19:13

digilordJeeves_: Is there a good place for me to look for info on netboot & install?  I changed a few of the things from the line you gave to add in the things that we have and I am still getting the language selection screen19:21

kirklandsmoser: just nominate for jaunty19:23
kirklandsmoser: and mark the main task fix released19:24
kirklandsmoser: it's always assumed that the default task only applies to the current development tree19:24
smoserkirkland, yes, but doesn't "nominate for jaunty" indicate some request to have it fixed in jaunty ?19:28
smoseri really dont care about getting it fixed (at the moment) just want to mark that it affects jaunty only19:28
kirklandsmoser: nominate for jaunty19:28
kirklandsmoser: accept it19:28
kirklandsmoser: mark won't fix19:28

uvirtbotNew bug: #429590 in eucalyptus (main) "Cannot upload bundle to Walrus" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/42959020:31
sorensmoser: One is to simply bind-mount the module directory directly on top of /lib/modules/`uname -r`.20:32
sorensmoser: The disadvantage is that you don't get to reclaim the memory it takes up.20:32
smosersoren, yeah. you could do that20:32
uvirtbotNew bug: #416445 in samba "mount.cifs crashed with SIGSEGV in main()" [Unknown,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/41644520:32
sorensmoser: The other approach is to remount the file system read-write and do it all from initramfs. On EC2, this is actually not /that/ bad, since the filesystem images are rarely in an inconsistent state :)20:33
