LillymonI've got a Kopete Notification stuck here. It won't go away no matter what I do, clicking View or Ignore has no effect. How do I kill it without killing Plasma along with the thing?02:39
madberryLillymon: what is does the notification say?02:40
LillymonIncoming message from a user, part of the message, View and Ignore buttons. It's just a standard Kopete notification that I see a lot of, but it came up at a time when Plasma was under extreme load, and now neither option will do anything at all.02:41
omnipotentduorestart your X02:41
LillymonI think that's a bit extreme, restarting Plasma would be my first recourse. But I want to see if I can just kill and restart the notification part.02:42
madberrywhat omnipotentduo said lol02:42
omnipotentduoi had the same problem i restarted x fixed it.02:43
LillymonRestarting Plasma fixed it. Still seemed like cracking a walnut with a sledgehammer, but whatever.02:44
omnipotentduothe other fix is unloading your bar, and then rebuild it02:45
omnipotentduoor just your sys tray02:45
madberryIt should properly be added to Kubuntu's papercut list02:46
LillymonWell ideally the notification applet should just not freeze, but hey, maybe KDE 4.3 will do it. I'm on KDE 4.2 here.02:46
omnipotentduodunno if it does it in 3, haven't had it happen yet.02:47
LillymonI was told that the notification applet in KDE 4.2 is in a relatively immature state, hence its inflexibility and occasional instability.02:48
omnipotentduo4.3 is the greatest kde EVER02:48
madberryActually I'm running 9.10, which has KDE 4.3.1, here it doesn't freeze but it stays in the notifier until you decide to cancel the notification.02:48
Laruftis there a better file manager than dolphin or konquerer?02:49

=== mirco_ is now known as mirco
LillymonI think Kopete notifications usually stay until you take an action to view or ignore. The problem was that my notification wouldn't do anything no matter what option I took.02:49
LillymonAlso, I am looking forward to KDE 4.3 myself. How is Karmic coming along? Is it pretty stable now?02:50
DragnslcrYou can get 4.3 for 9.04 from the backports PPA02:51
Gratz474how can i tell if i am using exa or xaa?02:51
Gratz474i had this problem once before and had to turn on xaa02:51
madberryLillymon: It is but the Firefox 3.5.4pre still has a lot of problems that is the only thing my laptop will freeze on every once in a while. Other then that it's been pretty stable.02:51
Gratz474many sites in firefox are really slow and kde4 just feels a bit slow right now02:52
Gratz474any idea how i can set xaa rendering on ?02:52
omnipotentduoonly if you dont thin out the kde extras02:52
LillymonI've always been wary of backports. People say it's OK if I just revert the changes, but then I ask how to do that, and get a load of instructions for Synaptic. Yeah, very helpful for this KPackageKit user.02:52
LillymonI get the impression the PPA may interfere with future upgrades.02:53
LillymonBut with Karmic less than a month off and having passed both feature freeze and user interface freeze, I'm starting to wonder how unstable it could possibly be.02:54
Gratz474anyone?02:54
madberryLillymon: Like I said it only freezes on Firefox for me at the moment02:55
madberryGratz474: on emoment please02:55
omnipotentduothat happens when closing a flash player for me02:55
LillymonWell alpha 6 is two days away, I might make my switch at that point.02:55
Gratz474madberry: thanks02:56
Gratz474i had kde4 working fast once but this crappy intel is not so good anyways buts its very laggy right now, its a rendering issue02:56
Gratz474not sure if i have exa on or xaa right now02:57
madberryGratz474: try this http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=111&t=23190#p3010102:57
LillymonAlso, I keep forgetting to ask. What's the best way to upgrade from to Karmic in Kubuntu? Should I install update-manager?02:57
madberryLillymon: I'm a fan of the clean install personally.  But in tests the update-manager has always worked fine.02:58
Gratz474madberry: lets see how that works02:58
madberryGratz474: YW02:59
madberryoops lol didn't mean to shout that02:59
LillymonWell I always make sure to burn a CD, just to be sure. But I try upgrading first.02:59
madberryLillymon: If you have issues after the upgrade you can always do a clean install.  Make sure to run a backup before doing anything03:00
LillymonRight, I might give my (now working) USB flash drive a go with this one. Thanks for the help.03:03

ubuntu_hmm where does it tell me which version i got07:18
skreechyou just have to tell it to mount sloppy if it's very badly dmaged07:18

skreechotherwise currently they just fix it and mount07:18
owner_by dirty I mean an incorrect Windows Shutdown07:18

ubuntu__how do i gain access to mydisk07:24
ubuntu__it tells me i dont have permission07:24
Lord_Drachenblutskreech: my problem was caused by upgrading to jaunty since the ati driver was no longer supported and now that problem is gone in karmic07:24
skreechah umm07:24
Lord_Drachenblutand since i don't have the ati driver anymore suspend to ram works07:25

Lord_Drachenblutzebaztian: I don't know if 4.3 has been back ported to hardy07:31
skreechzebaztian: There are no packages that are supported for hardy but you can certainly roll your own packages or get the packages installed on hardy07:31
skreechIt is FOSS you can do what you like07:31
Lord_Drachenblutmadberry: isn't hardy a lts version?07:31

Lord_Drachenblutskreech: if it was a lts version I could see why someone might want to stay there but still try to get 4.307:35
madberryzebaztian: From kubuntu.org: "Packages for Jaunty are not officially supported. KDE 4.3 will be part of Kubuntu Karmic 9.10 to be officially released this October"07:35
madberryzebaztian: If there are not supported for Jaunty then they will also not be supported for Hardy07:35
zebaztianwhat does it mean "there are no packages for" ?07:36
madberryLord_Drachenblut: true07:37
Lord_Drachenblutzebaztian: it means that there are no official packages in the repo's for it07:37

frozen[fark]Ok, here goes-- I m considering a personal file server, and I wanted a GUI on top of it. Would kubuntu be a good choice, or go with ubuntu?10:54
allan8904frozen[fark]: Go with xubuntu10:55
allan8904frozen[fark]: very lightwiehgt and all you need10:55
frozen[fark]whats the main difference btwn k and x10:56
bazhangfrozen[fark], one uses kde4, the other xfce410:56
allan8904frozen[fark]:trust me you dont need all teh boat (on offence) that KDE has for a server10:57
frozen[fark]allright10:58
frozen[fark]thanks for the advice-- appreciate it10:58
allan8904frozen[fark]: no probs10:59

[-Haza-]1Dragnslcr: Worth a try :)11:10
Tm_Tfrozen[fark]: well, if you're short of resources, then it's worth picking lightweight desktop11:11
[-Haza-]1Dragnslcr: Ahh, plasma did it :)11:11
[-Haza-]1Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeers!11:11
Tm_Tfrozen[fark]: but if your server is only sharing files and have plenty of power, well, then it doesn't really matter I'd say11:11
frozen[fark]Tm_T its 2ghz, 256mb ram (old, to say the least). gonna use it just for file and media sharing11:17
frozen[fark]so yeah, looksl ike im going down the xubuntu route11:17
Tm_Tfrozen[fark]: hmm, XFCE isn't that much lighter, I would recommend something more lighter if you are willing to try, for example LXDE, which is (in default session) less RAM-hogging but also less functionality (by itself)11:31
frozen[fark]ill stick with Xubuntu since its installing as we speak11:31
frozen[fark]i ll see how it performs11:31
Tm_Tfrozen[fark]: you can install LXDE or whatever you like next to it and just select the session you like in login screen then11:32

bodlyBluesKaj: yeah, i would never run the alpha (or pre-alpha since i updated to karmic as soon as the repository opened) unless I had another computer that was stable.20:48
