James147luis: how are you trying to create it?00:49
luisby the way i am on user management-system settings and i clik on new user account do everything but it wont create it ast the end00:49
James147bobbob1016: Multiple monitors is for setups where there are two monitors sharing one virtual screen00:50
bobbob1016James147: So how would I enable this?  I don't want mirroring, I just know I have them both plugged in because I see it mirrored00:51

luisbut why is not creating the new account how can i fix this?00:57
luisi do really need the other account00:58
James147brennan: wine can be used to run programs designed for windows (is .exe's )00:58
brennani know but it wont work00:58
James147luis: you can always use the command "sudo adduser USERNAME" to ass a user via command line00:59
luisexcellent txs a lot01:00
luisill try that01:00
James147brennan: wine wont work for all programs (games can be preticulay troublesome) best to get the latest development version as there are vast imprvments to wine -> http://www.winehq.org/download/deb01:00
James147brennan: you can also check out the wine appdb to see if the app you want to run is supporte at all (and how well it is known to run/tips to get it to run better) -> http://appdb.winehq.org/01:02
luisjames147: i type it and i got this:01:02
luisadduser: Only one or two names allowed.01:02
luisluis@Mario-Luis:~$01:02
James147luis: what was the command you typed into the command line?01:02
luissudo adduser01:03
James147luis: you need to state the user name as well - "sudo adduser carl" -< will add the user carl01:04
luisok txs sorry about that01:04
luisit is asking me for a new UNIX password that would the new users accountś password right?01:05
James147luis: its the password you want to use for the new use01:06
James147r01:06
nic_seltzerSimple question that I cannot find the answer to: KDE 4.2.2; How do I make it so that windows in other inactive workspaces do not show in my current workspace.01:06
luiswhat about room number?01:06
James147luis: other then the password the other information isent important, fill it in if you wantto01:06
luisook so thats not neccesary txs01:07
James147luis: just hit enter to set the defaults (which is nothing)01:07
luishahaha01:07
luisit worked01:07
James147luis: unless you want to set the data :)01:07
luistxs a lot james14701:07
James147luis: No problem01:08
James147nic_seltzer: Do you mean from other desktops?01:10
nic_seltzerYessir.01:10

brennanHELP ME01:44
dwidmannbrennan: try running it with wine from a konsole, maybe that will tell you why01:44
dwidmannbrennan: also, if one version of wine doesn't work, try another ... the one in the ubuntu repo isn't recent, so you'll have to get the latest dev release from winehq.org01:45
brennani know i did get its like 1.0.1 or some thing01:46
brennandwidmann: i got01:46
dwidmannbrennan: 1.0.1 is the stable a.k.a. old release01:47
brennani apt-get upgrade wine01:47
dwidmannbrennan: current dev should be something like 1.1.2901:47
dwidmannbrennan: like I said, you have to get it from winehq.org's repository01:48
brennanwhere do you go to copy and paste shit?01:49

ubuntuhi, plz someone tell me how to mount /dev/sda01:54
ubuntusudo.....01:55
James147ubuntu: create a directory where you want to mount it (usually in /media)01:55
ubuntuyeah can u tell me wat exactly to type01:56
James147ubuntu: then type sudo mount -t TYPE /dev/sdaX /PATH/TO/MOUNT/POINT   replacing TPYE with the type of the filesystem (mostlikly ext3) /dev/sdaX with the partition you want to mount (X should be a number) and the last bit with the path you want01:57
ubuntusudo mount -t NTFS /dev/sda1 /wateva01:58
James147ubuntu: more info can be found on mount by typeing "man mount" on the command line or "man:mount" in konqureror01:58

bobbob1016_James147: Ok, back.  I enabled the nvidia driver again, I guess xfix got rid of it, and nvidia-settings shows both screens, but System Settings only shows one screen.02:10
bobbob1016_ubuntu: sudo ls -lha /mnt02:10
bobbob1016_ubuntu: Permissions are a safety thing, helps prevent viruses02:11
James147bobbob1016_: use twinview, its emulates one virtual desktop and palces both screens on it (crap way of doing it but its the best way with crappy nvidia drivers, grr hate them for this /rant)02:11
ubuntuhmm when i typed sudo ls -lha /mnt it listed the files in the folder02:11
ubuntusort of like "dir" in DOS02:11
ubuntubut i still dont have access to the HD02:12

webbb82ok so i got a acer aspire one netbook with atom prosseser and kde 4.3 installed over ubuntu,  so i want to know if there is anything els besides turning off the effects and useing xrender insted of opengl for better performance, its not that bad but if i were to move a plasma window fast it will lag,  a little bit ago befor i did a fresh install when i switched to xrender my computer was pretty fast but now its not with the same02:13
webbb82 settings, so please anyone out there can you give me some tips02:13
James147ubuntu: unmount it and try this... sudo mount -t ntfs -o nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=46 /dev/sda1 /mnt02:14
webbb82sorry for it being so long\02:14
ubuntuthanx james02:15
ubuntuthat totally did it02:15
James147ubuntu: dam ntfs drives needing silly options :)02:15
James147webbb82: you could look for applications that are useing high ammounts of memory or cpu and see if you can do anything about them02:17
ubuntuokay now i have a usbstick with ntfs02:20
ubuntutyped: sudo mount -t ntfs -o nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=46 /dev/sdb1 /media02:21
ubuntubut cant find it in media02:21
webbb82James147: it doesnt look like its anything that is eating up my reasorces i dunno what i is02:21
bobbob1016_James147: Thanks, it works now.  Surprisingly, it works fine, even with vdpau mplayer playing 1080p and compiz running02:22
James147ubuntu: dont mount stuff in /media directly, create a sub folder first (sudo mkdir /media/usbdisk)  you can only mount to empty directorys (/media usually contains things like cdrom02:22
ubuntutell me a quick folder i can mount it to02:22
ubuntuplz02:22
ubuntuanything i dont wanna create a new folder just wanna get this madness over with :P02:23
James147webbb82: see if anything spikes when it starts to lagg... not sure what else i can suggest sorry :(02:23
webbb82i know its plasma that lags the only thing laggy is my plasmoids02:24
James147ubuntu: just type sudo mkdir /media/usb && sudo mount -t ntfs -o nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=46 /dev/sdb1 /media/usb02:24
webbb82thats why xrender works a little better02:24
James147webbb82: you could try reducing the number of activites and virtual desktops you have... not sure that will do much though02:25
ubuntujames147 thanx for the help02:25
ubuntubut theres still nothing in media/usb02:25

James147ubuntu: fiesty is very old now... its no longer suporrted02:34
ubuntuyeah i heard they pulled the plug on it02:34
ubuntubut seriously is there no workaround to mount my ntfs usb stick02:35
James147ubuntu: I would suggest getting a more uptodate livecd when you can :)02:35
ubuntujust wanna move win7 to it02:35
ubuntuand restart and install win702:35
James147ubuntu: try deleteing whats in /tmp and mounting it there...02:36
James147ubuntu: not norammly suggested, but if you cant mkdirs02:36

idzmeHI THERE, I installed kubuntu 9.04, do I need compiz when i want to use emerald?17:43
mmauderDr_Rita_Oswald: where did you get that file? sometimes .bin is used for binary files to be executed. in that case you need to make the file executable (properties) and click it again17:43
Dr_Rita_OswaldIt's the linux planeshift download17:43
mmauderDr_Rita_Oswald: yeah, that's one of those :)17:44
ghoulsbladehi all, is there a way to "repair" an existing kubuntu installation without flattening it ? i tried around with installing the "ubuntu" desktop a while ago, and it seems to have messed up a  few things that stayed broken even after uninstalling it again.  for example the system menu has lots of gnome entries, and i'm not sure if the kde system settings are still all there, it's rather messy =(17:44
mmauderright click on it, go to the permissions tab and tick the executable box17:44
Dr_Rita_OswaldI just did that, but it says the file is of an unknown type17:45
mmauderDr_Rita_Oswald: then try simply clicking it (watch for disk acitivity as it may take a while before anything shows)17:45
mmauderDr_Rita_Oswald: weird... are you scared of the command line?17:45
Dr_Rita_Oswaldnot really,17:45
Dr_Rita_OswaldI'm trying to learn more of it17:46
mmauderDr_Rita_Oswald: then fire up konsole and navigate to this file17:46
mmauderDr_Rita_Oswald: then do "./whatever.bin" (without the quotation marks) and see if it executs17:46
mmauderDr_Rita_Oswald: whatever.bin obviously being the actual filename17:47
mmauderDr_Rita_Oswald: ./PlaneShift*.bin should do17:47
Dr_Rita_Oswaldit didn't run an error line, but it didn't do anything else either17:48

I already upgraded towards the new kde. In my xorg.conf i forced the use of XAA instead of the default EXA. desktopeffects are off for now17:53
yakuzii also tried to get x.org 1.6.1 instead of 1.6.0 but every time i had to make a fresh install due to f**k-up17:54

DaemonFCI got it back up, but the boot screen is still gone and there's some error messages while it's loading22:46
resplinDeamonFC: That isn't encouraging. Thanks for the warning.22:46
DaemonFCif you do want to use the alpha, the 6th alpha will be out within the next day22:46
DaemonFCinstall clean from that, don't upgrade22:46
DaemonFCand it can still break, so be warned22:47
resplinDo you know if alpha 6 will be nearly identical to todays daily build?22:47
DaemonFCprobably, but the LiveCDs haven't been installing for the past few days22:48
resplinThe ones at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/current/22:48
DaemonFCthe Alpha won't have that problem22:48
resplinIs upgrading from alph6 to beta and then to release usually pretty smooth, or are they each reinstalls?22:48
DaemonFCjust keeping up with the updates will do22:49
DaemonFCyou don't have to reinstall22:49
DaemonFCK#B's extra codecs package is broken22:50
DaemonFCApport likes to hang, so I've removed it22:50
DaemonFC*K3B22:50
resplinDaemonFC: To make sure I understand: it is dangerous to upgrade from a previous LTS to the pre-release 9.10, but once I am upgraded I can do apt-get dist-upgrade to stay current through the release?22:50
DaemonFCyeah22:50
DaemonFCI wouldn't try upgrading to a pre-release of anything22:50
DaemonFCjsut too many things that can go wrong22:51
resplinThanks for the info.22:51
