basajaunwhy are the ubuntu jaunty lxde repos never updated?14:16
knomethe xubuntu team is not responsible for updating lxde in the ubuntu repositories. we don't know. you should ask the one who is packaging lxde for ubuntu.14:18
Sysiubuntu/debian filosophy is that only secirity stuff is updated14:18
knomeas jaunty is (still) the newest, there might be some other properly rationalised updates14:20
knomebut anyway it's not something the xubuntu team does or administrates.14:20
basajaunok thanks knome14:21
knomenp14:21
chardingI found the upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 seamless, except that the upgrade didn't save my synaptics touchpad changes and trying to fix my double taps, tap and move and a few other things impossible to fix.. This is so annoying..15:05
knomecharding, what do you mean with impossible?15:06
chardingWell, using synclient and going back and forth between 10 different settings that change the touchpad settings, I find really frustrating. I tried gsynaptics, but it doesn't cover a lot of the fine features. I upgraded yesterday afternoon and I've been mucking with the settings ever since..15:07
chardingI've been trying to find a 'typical settings' synclient settings to work with..15:08
chardingPlus, I can double click and highlight a word in xterm but trying to double click a buddy in my Pidgin buddy list doesn't work. It does not open the chat window, I have to click the buddy atleast three times.15:14
knomehmm15:15
chardingActually I'm finding that in firefox also..15:16
chardingI can't highlight a word by double clicking it.. If I click three times, it quickly highlights the word and then unhighlights it, as it should.. But I can't just double click a word to highlight it15:16
chardingbut xterm, no problem15:16
chardingDo you think this has something to do with hal?15:17
knomeno idea15:17
knomeyou might ask #ubuntu, as i'm relatively sure this isn't a xubuntu-specific problem15:17
knomeor you can wait for somebody who knows, comes around15:17
knomeor search the forums, if you haven't done so already15:18
chardingYeah, some people are hard coding the options into their hal/policy file and rrestarting hal or Xserver, but you can also do it on synclient.. I'm just wondering if hal sends out some kind of info to other programs once it has applied the changes.15:21
jarnosI used UNetbootin to install Xubuntu (9.04) as my laptop does not have CD-drive. I did not find Xubuntu Alternate CD equivalent in the distribution list. Is it possible to use such by USB boot? I suppose it is possible to set encrypted home folder in installation only by the Alternate method as I did not see such an option when I installed?19:27
jarnos^9.1019:28
Sysiyou don't need to download with unetbootin19:32
Sysijus get .iso and transfer to stick with unetbootin19:32
Sysibut i can't remember if it's not possible with alternate19:33
mowhawkoI just installed 512mb of ram (2x256) in an older P3 box - BIOS recognizes all 512, as does lshw -C memory. However, xubuntu system monitor and top both display only half of the installed amount. what gives?19:43
Quirklyaight folks, anyone around able to help me with a simple problem?21:50
goldrakehi21:50
Quirklyhi21:51
Quirklyany life?21:59
goldrakeyes21:59
goldrakeall in tv for inter-barcelona21:59
QuirklyI need some minor tech support22:00
goldrakeQuirkly, if i know22:01
Sysijust ask.22:01
Quirklyhow do I make my display settings stick22:01
Quirklyso that I don't have to change it on every reboot/login22:01
QuirklyI googled a bit of info on it, but nothing seemed to be able to help me22:02
jarnosQuirkly, you could set it in /etc/X11/xorg.conf or run xrandr with proper arguments as a startup script. Anyway, I think settings made by the display settings dialog should remain after logout-login. If not, file a bug report in launchpad.net.22:11
Quirklyfrom what I read, a lot of people were having that issue22:12
Quirklyand that xorg.conf file is empty, so I thought there was another config somewhere I had to adjust22:12
jarnosQuirkly, e.g. command "xrandr --output default --mode 1400x1050" may do; you may have to change output name and resolution22:18
Quirklythat will change the resolution to the specified size? I kinda just checked the man page for it and found that out loool22:19
jarnostry it in command line22:19
Quirklywhere's the best place to put it so it runs as a startup script? that's not an area I've tinkered with too much22:19
jarnoswhat version of xu you are using?22:20
Quirklynewest? 9.04?22:20
Quirklyjust installed last week22:20
Quirklyhrm, that command not do much, in fact did nothing at all22:20
jarnoslook at settings -> startup or something22:21
jarnosyou could use grandr to find out output name22:21
Quirklyyeah I'm just trying to find that22:21
Quirklyw00t, xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1600x1200 works for me :)22:23
Quirklynow, to just put it in a good spot, and I guess I could be ok22:23
InvisibleManI installed Xubuntu using the Jaunty Ubuntu network boot.  It installed without any problems, however it won't boot.  The first time I tried, it lagged for 10 minutes at 15%, then again at 75%, and finally stopped completely after going to a black screen where it mentioned a lot of segmentation faults and a few other errors.  Any ideas on how I could fix this?22:27
Quirklyget a new computer? ;p22:31
yag-koshahi there22:32
yag-koshaanyone know how to remove a dead link in the applications menu?22:32
Quirklythere's a menu editor somewhere22:32
Quirklysettings ->main menu22:33
yag-koshalet me see...22:33
yag-koshadont see that, sorry22:34
Quirklyumm, what?22:34
Quirklywhat is in your settings menu then?22:34
Quirklyin the menu it's between keyboard and moues22:35
Quirklymouse*22:35
yag-koshawell, its actually in catalan22:35
Quirklyuhhh...22:35
Quirklylemme see if i can find a commandline wya to get to it22:36
yag-koshawould help, thanks22:36
Quirklyalacarte22:36
Quirklythat's the program that should bring up the menu editor22:36
yag-koshahow can i run it?22:37
Quirklyfrom a command line?22:37
Quirklyterminal window?22:37
yag-koshasorry, lil rookie here...22:37
InvisibleManThat computer is for chat programs only.  Upgrading it would be a waste22:37
Quirklywell, it's that or find it by guess and check in the settings menu, cause it's there by default22:37
yag-koshai type "alacarte" in terminal, and tells me its not installed...22:39
InvisibleManI ran memtest, and it reported that the memory is fine.  I also ran a disk check and it didn't report any errors.  I reinstalled once already, but that didn't solve the problem.  The computerhas 128MB RAM, 6GB HDD, 355MHz PII CPU22:39
InvisibleMan*computer has22:39
Quirklywell yag-kosha that would explain the issue lol22:40
Quirklyyou could install it, then easily edit the menu22:41
Quirklyeithre use synaptic to install, or from the command line apt-get alacarte22:41
Quirkly128MB ram? thta's gonna be slow as molasses at any rate, I did an install on a similar machine, barely had it running lol22:41
yag-koshathanks a lot Quirkly, i will try22:41
InvisibleManI only need it to run IRSSI22:42
InvisibleManAnd Synergy22:42
Quirklyso you'd be running a command prompt install?22:44
InvisibleManSynergy needs whatever the GUI thing is22:45
Quirklyah, so you'd need a desktop install for simplest install results22:45
InvisibleManOtherwise I would just stick with a command prompt :/22:45
Quirklywhat is synergy? I'm too lazy to look it up22:45
InvisibleManIt allows you to share one mouse and keyboard between multiple networked computers22:45
Quirklymmmmk, no command line alternative? not that it solves your problem, but the less you install the more likely things are to work22:46
InvisibleManBy the way, I just attempted booting and it is stuck at "* Loading manual drivers..."  It doesn't go past this point22:46
Quirklydid you try redoing with fresh install disk? could be the install itself is corrupt22:46
InvisibleManErm, I don't know of any other program that would do this22:46
InvisibleManI reinstalled and the problem wasn't fixed.22:47
InvisibleManI am installing over the network; it is downloading the OS every time I install22:47
QuirklyI meant is synergy totally gui, or simply a pretty frontend for a service that could be run from the commandline?22:47
InvisibleManThere is no GUI for synergy, but I think it needs the GUI thing for handling the mouse22:47
InvisibleMan"System Requirements:  Unix: X Windows version 11 revision 4 or up, XTEST extension"22:49
QuirklyI understand what you're saying, it needs the X server to manage the mouse22:49
QuirklyI'd just drop kick the machine, reinstall, and it would work fine, but that's just me and my theory that violence fixes everything22:49
Quirklyit's got a pretty good track record in my books22:50
InvisibleManHeh22:50
Quirklyhonestly I'm not sure, if all the tests say that the hard drive and memory is fine, I'd see if there's any more thorough tests you can do, that like, stress test the stuff22:50
goldrakegood night22:51
InvisibleManHmmm...  Well when I am installing, I am given the option to install various packages (Xubuntu, Ubuntu Desktop, Samba Server...) and it also gives me the option to select packages myself.  Would doing the latter help at all?22:53
Quirklymore likely to miss something if you do the packages manually22:54
Quirklyxubuntu I find is the best on a low end system obviously lol....but dunno what else could work22:54
InvisibleManAlright :S22:56
InvisibleManShould I ask in the #ubuntu channel?22:57
Quirklymight be worth a shot22:57
Quirklyit does sound like a hardware issue, of some kind, maybe an entirely different distro would help Idunno22:58
InvisibleManIs there one you would recommend?22:58
InvisibleManI had PuppyLinux installed previously, but found out is isn't really that great22:58
Quirklywell, I like gentoo, a lot more manual installing of things, but I find it starts out barebones and you only get what you need22:58
InvisibleMan*it22:58
InvisibleManEh, well I don't have much time to spend learning how to operating a Linux machine :S22:59
Quirklywell, yeha, the install might be better these days, it's been a LONG time since I've used anything other than a ubuntu install of some kind22:59
InvisibleManOk, well thanks for the help.  If #ubuntu can't solve the problem, I'll either just ask later or try and find another distro23:00
Quirklyand yeah, a more thorough hardware test, that puts more stress than a basic scan23:02
Quirklyif that even exists23:02
