rgreeningI think I found my issue. devicekit + HAL = broken on my system. Can you see if you have devicekit-disks installed?03:16
* JontheEchinda is in windows atm03:16
rgreeningI think the two are not playing well together03:17
* rgreening kiks JontheEchinda to cause a reboot03:17
rgreeningJontheEchinda: If I stop hal, devicekit-disks works as expected, but KDE does not show my stick in notifier.03:18

jjesseit does that on purpose :003:22

ScottKMeh.  If I'm not around, tell rgreening I do have devicekit-disks installed when he returns....03:49
JontheEchinda[22:49:29] <ScottK> Meh.  If I'm not around, tell rgreening I do have devicekit-disks installed when he returns....04:18

rgreeningJontheEchinda: so insert and remove usb works for you in notifier?04:19

rgreeningdam u haha04:20
rgreeningJontheEchinda: you running 32 or 64 bit?04:22
JontheEchinda32 bit04:23
* rgreening is wondering if there is some 64 bit weirdness going on.. im on 6404:24
ScottKCould be.  I'm on 32 bit.04:24
rgreeningI just tried a live cd of alpha6 and had the same issue.. downloading the 32 bit one now to test that04:25
rgreening_ScottK: well, apparantly it's specific to my Acer Aspire 6930 only. I tried the image on my Acer One flawless but both the 64 and 32 images fail on my 6930.05:48
ScottKThat makes me consider it might be a kernel issue.05:49

* rgreening_ digs more05:49
ScottKYou didn't change the bios did you?05:50
rgreening_no05:50
ScottKSo that's not a variable in the equation.  It worked before, right?05:51
rgreening_Im trying to remember which kernel I was using last when it worked05:51

eviljussi01Is there a reason the sun-java6-plugin is not in the kubuntu-retricted extra's pacakge?09:32
agateaufinally, I wrote this blog post about indicators: http://agateau.wordpress.com/2009/09/18/indicators-notifications-and-co/09:50
Sputnice09:55
Riddelllanother sunny day10:06
RiddelllRiddell: looks like another day where the server I use still exists in two places nether synced with the other10:07
Riddellltoday I should update agateau's stuff, handle the new amarok beta and test taglib 1.6, milestone bugs and report to the release team meeting and have a power lunch with a KDE developer10:11
agateauRiddelll: wow, busy day!10:11
* agateau wonders what a "power lunch" is10:12
Riddelllagateau: it's like a normal lunch but it suggests I'm not skiving off :)10:13
agateauRiddelll: oh ok :)10:14
Riddelllagateau: your new libindicate-qt uses the new libindicate presumably?10:17
agateauRiddelll: it does10:17
a|wen-dtuagateau: kudos with the new ayatana notifications; they are really nice and functions very well!10:41
agateaua|wen-dtu: thanks!10:41
a|wen-dtuagateau: will it be as an option in final 9.10 ?10:42
agateaua|wen-dtu: yes10:44
a|wen-dtunice!10:44
a|wen-dtuare you responsible for the message indicator as well, or?10:44
agateauyes10:44
a|wen-dtuwhat about changing so it only show "new" messages instead of "unread" from kmail?10:45
agateauthat's something I'd like to do, but it's a bit more difficult given the way kmail works10:46
a|wen-dtuah, well at least it is on the todo :) ... i turned it off primarily because of that; made it kind of unusable to me :/10:48
a|wen-dtuapart from that, it is working pretty good (minus some bugs, that afaik was on the todo).10:53
orionasI was watching TVtime at full screen a few days ago. Works fine, but11:08
orionasI wsa also watching the kmail notifications11:08
orionas :)11:08
orionasAny thoughts about that?11:09
Tm_Torionas: I think that should be related to some general setting, say "Presentation" mode makes all notifications to stay behind systray icon for example11:12
Tm_Tno idea if that is possible currently though11:13
orionasWell, OK. I could just turn off notifications for while watching TV ...11:16
Tm_Torionas: aye, maybe it should do it automatically, I don't know11:16
orionasTm_T: Pile it up on the wishlist :)11:17
tseliotRiddell: does the KDE tray use 16x16 icons by default in Kubuntu?11:29
Riddellltseliot: 22x22 I think11:30
tseliotRiddelll: I asked as I'm getting this problem with pidgin in Kubuntu (see the white icon): http://albertomilone.com/ubuntu/karmic/screenshots/pidgin.png11:31
tseliotthat should show the "available status" icon11:33
tseliothere's the output of "ls -R /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/tray/"11:33
tseliothttp://pastebin.ubuntu.com/273374/11:33
tseliotRiddelll: the actual name of the icon is tray-online.png11:35
Riddellltseliot: systray is just an xembed window, there shouldn't be any difference seen between running something under KDE than gnome11:35
tseliotRiddelll: the icon was visible in jaunty11:37
Riddellltseliot: and under gnome?11:44
tseliotRiddelll: gnome doesn't seem to be affected by this problem11:45
Riddelllmaybe it's a problem, in gtk-qtcurve engine11:46
Riddellltseliot: try running it under KDE with GTK2_RC_FILES  unset11:46
tseliotRiddelll: something like GTK2_RC_FILES="" pidgin ?11:48
Riddelllyes11:48
tseliotok, let me try11:49
tseliotRiddelll: GTK_RC_FILES="" pidgin doesn't seem to solve the problem11:52
RiddelllGTK211:52
Riddellltseliot: does it run with the crappy dewiget theme11:53
Riddellltseliot: does it run with the crappy default wiget theme?11:53
tseliotRiddelll: no, it seems to be still qt curve11:53
Riddellltseliot: try    unset GTK2_RC_FILES; pidgin11:53
tseliotok11:54
tseliotRiddelll: ok, it's ugly now but the problem still remains11:55
Riddelllso it's not a fault of the widget theme, it must be a fault in pidgin somehow11:55
Riddelllalthough I've no idea why it would be doing something different under KDE than under Gnome11:55
tseliotRiddell: the weird thing is that I can see a green triangle in the bottom right corner of the icon and an orange icon when I receive a message. Also I can see part of the connection icon when pidgin is connecting11:57
Riddelllso it's showing stuff offset by a few pixels?11:58
tseliotRiddelll: either that or it's clipping the icon somehow12:01
Riddellltseliot: worth testing some other gnome apps with systray icons under KDE too I suppose12:02
Riddelllalthough shouldn't pidgin be using the message indicator?12:02
tseliotRiddelll: it uses notifications and updates the status icon12:03
tseliotRiddelll: liferea's icon is not perfect (gray background) but still visible12:07
tseliothttp://albertomilone.com/ubuntu/karmic/screenshots/liferea.png12:07
tseliottransmission's icon is perfect12:09
tseliothttp://albertomilone.com/ubuntu/karmic/screenshots/transmission.png12:10
Riddelllhard to say what's at fault then12:15
Riddelllcould be KDE could be pidgin could be both12:15
tseliotRiddelll: where's the systray code?12:16
tselioti.e. what package?12:16
Riddellltseliot: kdebase-workspace12:17
tseliotRiddelll: ok, thanks12:17
Riddelllkdebase-workspace-4.3.1/plasma/applets/systemtray/12:17
tseliotthanks again12:18
allee-kIs apport somehow usable at the moment?  apport-bug /usr/bin/X hangs (begs for kill 9) after sending infos, and just apport-bug does crazy things whatever I choose (storage problem | other) :(12:41
shtylmanapachelogger: I have thought more about this shared installer package and I don't think it is the right approach...at least not how it is now. The problem is that I used ubiquity specific names for lots of things in the style file. So...my recommendation is this: either leave for this cycle as separate things in separate packages and plan for next cycle to create a base style file and makes sense for various components...or... create a kubuntu-13:04
shtylmaninstaller-artwork package instead that just has the images in it and no style file and leave the style file up to the users? I like the idea of a good base style file but I am concerned that really beyond these two installers...what else are we gonna use this for? thoughts?13:04
ScottKRiddelll: I should have a quassel update ready once you've uploaded libindicate-qt (agateau updated the quassel patch for it with upstream).13:51
ScottKHow barbaric that I'm forced to install vim on my own and it isn't automatically provided anymore.13:53
JontheEchindaKonversation will be shipping a beta this weekend, with a final release in the first week of October13:59
ScottKU/I for Quassel is done, so we could possibly have the IRC client shootout next week.13:59
JontheEchindaAll Konversation has to fix is the marker line regressions (almost fixed) and a kde3 -> kde4 config upgrade bug, then they'll beta release and ride out string freeze to the final release14:01
JontheEchindabut otherwise UI is done there too14:01
JontheEchindaScottK: oh, I also found that Konversation can use KNotify rather than the OSD, but that notifications on nick highlight are off by default14:05
ScottKInteresting.14:05
JontheEchindawe could turn these on in k-d-s if we so chose14:05
ScottKIf we switch back to Konversation as the default, then we probably should so as not to 'regress'.14:06
ScottKOtherwise, I think sticking with the upstream default is sensible.14:06
ScottKDo they have a reason to prefer their OSD over KNotification?14:06
ScottKI do think it'd make sense to use the system notifications for consistency.14:07
JontheEchindaneither is on by default, I just found the OSD first14:08
RiddelllScottK: new libindicate-qt is up14:08
JontheEchindathen I found the notification settings, but chose the wrong one, which made me think that KNotifications didn't work in Konversation14:08
JontheEchindaSince it uses an old Amarok implementation for the OSD, I thought it would act the same in that it prevented the use of KNotifications (you have to use an external plugin for Amarok)14:09
JontheEchindaBut, as it stands, neither is turned on by upstream by default, and both work equally well14:10
ScottKOK.  New quassel ina bit then.14:12

gunsofbrixtonhi, I was wondering if during installation the keyboard layout that is chosen automatically should depend on the selected time zone and not on the language. is there some issue I am overlooking or should I report a wish?14:35
RiddelllI don't know the exact criteria  used, I'm pretty  sure timezone is part of it14:39
Riddelllgunsofbrixton: I'd ask in #ubuntu-installer14:39
gunsofbrixtonRiddelll: ok tnx14:41
allee-kgunsofbrixton: laptop can move, so making keyboard location dependend is IMHO not useful  Owners most probably stick to their language independently where they are, so using language as default makes sense IMHO.14:44
gunsofbrixtonallee-k: I asked in #ubuntu-installer and maybe the discussion should continue there. anyhow if the laptop moves you are likely to change the kde time, not the time at installation. on the contrary I would think that "foreign" users choosing english as a language because their language is not fully translated or simply because they like it are fairly common14:49

Riddellldavmor2: no, the server is still in two places at once between moves :(15:46

RiddelllNCommander: would you be able to tell jefferai the fix for that?15:49
davmor2Riddelll: got a better deal else where then?15:49
Riddellldavmor2: no worse, but 8 years of free hosting in the  back of someone's office is as much as could be expected15:50
davmor2:) hahahaha15:50
QuintasanRiddelll: Do we need FFe for Dooble or we are going to put it in ppa?15:57
RiddelllQuintasan: FFe would be good, me or vorian can grant15:57
Riddelllis there a patckage for testing?15:57
Quintasanworking, almost finished, need only a desktop file15:58
QuintasanRiddelll: desktop files go to /usr/share/applications and icons to /usr/share/hicolor?16:13
Riddelll/usr/share/icons/hicolor/ yes16:13
Quintasanhumm, where I can place *.png files? debuild complains about binary file changing16:19
ScottKIf you put them in /debian you need to uuencode and uudecode them.16:19
neversfeldelots of people complaining about okular not compiled with epub support, bug 424095 and the feedback page for alpha5. What are we going to do? Set it to "Won't Fix" for karmic?16:20

QuintasanScottK: How should I do that?16:21
RiddelllQuintasan: it's fiddly, you can see kde4libs for an example16:22
Quintasanhmm upstream supplies 16x16 icon in package and 48x48 *.ico file16:23
ScottKneversfelde: How about write up a MIR and see if we can get it approved.16:23
neversfeldeScottK: isn't it too  late? If not, I will try to do it.16:24
ScottKIt's definitely too late if you don't ask.16:24

apacheloggershtylman: installer-artwork is overhead18:20
apacheloggershtylman: besides, the qss mostly needs to be reimplemented for each installer anyway, since I doubt that every installer ought to follow the design paradigm of ubiquity anyway18:21

apacheloggerI think bzr just broke while pushing18:27
apacheloggerthat cant be good18:27
apacheloggeralso the lp ui remake is kinda silly18:28
apacheloggeron my darn user page the amarok wiki url overlaps with a ssh key18:28

Tonio_apachelogger: are some people here using the message indicator ?18:32
* apachelogger is not, KDE shall prevail!18:33
Tonio_yeah...18:33
rgreeningSeems to behave well enough here.. I think I may like it18:33
Tonio_not that the concept ain't interesting, but well... there are things to fix before... kubuntu needs a lot of polishing right now...18:33
Tonio_I'll be back in france in a week, I'll take more time for kubuntu18:34

Tonio_makes it better I think :)18:35
apacheloggerlearning about canada sounds broing though :P18:35
Tonio_apachelogger: I suspect the issue is in qt in fact, not kde18:36
apacheloggerTonio_: though I must say that the debug info is incredibly useless and I failed to fix0r the issue in all 3 attempts I made18:36
apacheloggerTonio_: quite possibly it is in Qt18:36
Tonio_apachelogger: pure qt apps do break also, when gtk ones don't18:36
apacheloggerthe thing is18:37
apacheloggerin theory even for dnd it somehow must access some X cursor18:37

apacheloggerso in theory you could make the oxygen cursor theme override the bug18:37

apacheloggerTonio_: yes18:41
apacheloggerI just uploaded runtime18:41
Tonio_ok18:41
apacheloggerand that will fail without new kdesudo18:41
apacheloggeranother reason why i do not like dpkg-divert18:41
Tonio_haha, indeed, let's make it then18:41
Tonio_yeah I know about that...18:42
Tonio_apachelogger: we could go with debconf eventually like debian, but then we have to make sure it'll choose kdesudo bu default18:42
Tonio_apachelogger: what about that ?18:42
apacheloggernah18:43
apacheloggerno point18:43
Tonio_apachelogger: the ideal thing is to fix kdesu package, kdesudo, and provide an alternative18:43
apacheloggerthat is what my uploads are doing :P18:43
Tonio_haha :)18:43
apacheloggerwhich is also why the debconf approach would make no sense18:43
Tonio_so you did fix kdelibs also ?18:43
apacheloggerTonio_: what for?18:44
Tonio_bah provide an alternative for kdesu too, no ?18:44
apacheloggerkdesu resides in runtime these days18:44
Tonio_yeah workspace/runtime, whatever contains kdesu ;)18:44
apacheloggerruntime, all runtime apps are in runtime :P18:45
apacheloggerall apps that compose the actual workspace are in workspace :P18:45
Tonio_apachelogger: the very ideal thing would be to merge kdesudo and kdesu and write a sudo class for it18:45
apacheloggerTonio_: I did not want to jump into that, besides, soon kdesu* shall be completely pointless18:45
Tonio_apachelogger: so.......... did you fix the *runtime* package too ??? ;-)18:45
apacheloggerpolicykit ftw!18:45
Tonio_yeah I know about that18:45
rgreeningapachelogger: we need to make kdesudo go away as a dep on our packages. should be a goal for UDS-L to make packagekit used by more stuff. We have packagekit working now for usb-creator-kde (0.2.7 unreleased)18:45
apacheloggerTonio_: yeah, in fact, it is already uploaded, so you should hurry with kdesudo :P18:46
ScottKrgreening: It's an upstream goal for KDE 4.4, so Karmic +1 is the time18:46
Tonio_rgreening: wow, impressive :)18:46
apacheloggerrgreening: you mean policykit I suppose?18:46
rgreeningUDS-L = Karmic+1 :)18:46

rgreeningyay18:47
apacheloggerthere is no client server thing18:47
Tonio_k18:47
Tonio_apachelogger: frontend/backend :)18:48
apacheloggerthat is not much of a hassle either AFAIK :)18:48
Tonio_you need some templating in policykit at least right ? and then the UI using it18:48
apacheloggerwell, you need to write a policy18:48
Tonio_rgreening: I mean it's not as easy as a sudo bla18:48
apacheloggersimilar to the dbus interface stuff, just that the dbus interface stuff is a buildtime dep18:48
rgreeningTonio_: download the 0.2.7 release of usb-creator. It has a helper backend that does the root priv stuff via policy and the frontend is all user space18:49
Tonio_rgreening: oki I'll look at this18:49
apacheloggerTonio_: well, considering sudo might not be there and considering you might want a sudo GUI and considering all the sudo GUIs use different cmdline args, I would consider policykit easier to implement18:49
apacheloggerat least easier to implement in a cross-desktop/toolkit manner18:49
* rgreening agrees18:49
Tonio_rgreening: one thing we should consider then is partitionmanager18:49
rgreeningfor sure Tonio_18:49

Tonio_apachelogger: it is both a kcm and binary app18:50
apacheloggerthus the slash :P18:51
Tonio_apachelogger: I think we should drop the desktop file for the binary, as it is pointless to have both18:51
Tonio_it should be in systemsettings18:51
apacheloggerTonio_: I suppose upstream will jump at policykitification soonish18:51
Tonio_apachelogger: I hope so, and maybe I can help if it is not18:51

JontheEchidnason of a... where'd the kmymoney debs I pbuilt go...22:16
apacheloggerat least last I checked the documentation seemed to suggest that any new upstream version is affected by feature freeze and that only the release team decides what is bugfix and what is not (or worth the regression potential for that matter)22:16
apacheloggerah22:17

* apachelogger better gets something to drink, clearly he must be dehydrated22:40
apacheloggerinteresting how kdebluetooth got more bugs than -runtime22:40
JontheEchidna^and that's after I triaged it the other day, it had like 35 before I was through with it22:41
JontheEchidna*4522:41
JontheEchidnabut it still has ancient bugs that I don't have the heart to try to tell people to upgrade and test, since kdebluetooth sucks so hard22:41
Quintasangreat, I was uploading it for 2h and I have to wait for another two hours to build it :S22:45
apacheloggershould have done a local build I suppose?22:46
QuintasanI have done22:47
apacheloggerwhat are the odds that the fix for bug 432378 will expose some build issue caused by either incompability with gcc or broken patch?22:47
ubottuLaunchpad bug 432378 in kdelibs "Missing header in qt-messages.pot" [Undecided,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/43237822:47
* apachelogger is afraid he might have to fix that FTBFS then -.-22:48
JontheEchidnaI'm finding more and more kde3 apps that fail due to gcc22:48
apacheloggeror autotools :P22:48
JontheEchidnaoh yeah, now we have autotools version the admin/cvs.sh scripts don't know about22:48
* JontheEchidna tries to remember which package that was22:49
apacheloggerwell, then the admin dir in the package might be incredibly old22:49
apacheloggerwhich is a quite common case22:49
apacheloggere.g. most software created with kdevelop has ancient admin dir22:49
JontheEchidnakdevelop ships with ancient libtools magic, too22:50
apacheloggernever investigated why but kdevelop always seemed to ship with a way to old admin dir22:50
JontheEchidnabug 25328622:50
ubottuLaunchpad bug 253286 in kdevelop "kdevelop project was broken when going to 8.10" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/25328622:50
apacheloggerwell22:50
apacheloggerIMHO if development templates outdate without means to provide easy updates then something obviously failed to be antcipated in the design stage22:51
apacheloggerthough autotools is evil either way22:52
apacheloggeroh dear22:52
JontheEchidnathing is, it ships that libtools crap as a tarball inside the source, which we can't patch22:52
apacheloggerhehe22:52
apacheloggerJontheEchidna: we can exchange tarball and repack22:53
ScottKQuintasan: ryanakca brought his dad to the last one.22:53
apacheloggernot that I would care, since I find kdevelop3 a quite painful IDE altogether22:53
JontheEchidnaany solution is cringe-inducing (due to the prescence of autohell)22:53
apacheloggeranyway22:53
apacheloggerall new news (i.e. news that must be)22:53
apacheloggerthat green bar for tarball downloads on lp22:54
apacheloggerdoes not seem to be scaling but instead is a rather large image22:54
apacheloggerif I maximize my browser the image does not fill the whole bar22:54
apacheloggerso I must think it is indeed not one very small image with like 1px width but instead one very large image, yet not large enough22:55
JontheEchidnaphonon in debian has some packaging fixes we want, I should merge that22:55
