N-SHow do I force the screen resolution in xfe? It's a bit annoying to edit it on every reboot, while the screen is jumping up and down. As it is, there isn't a "Set as default" option in the settings for display.09:45
=== VSIIISU_gay_tpg is now known as psycho_oreos
N-Sah, googling gave me this to try "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg". I'll do that and get back here if I fail.09:51
N-S^^^^ That command "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" gave me an error. Changed to Xorg at the end and other combinations, but nothing happens. No program starts, nothing.11:25
psycho_oreosN-S you have ati card?11:26
N-SAll conf files in /etc/X11 are just simple dfault fiels with just the words "default" in them.11:26
N-Spsycho_oreos I could check11:26
psycho_oreosN-S, lspci11:26
N-S00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 04)11:27
psycho_oreosmmm11:27
psycho_oreosin the meantime you might be able to get away using vesa driver11:28
psycho_oreosunder xorg.conf11:28
psycho_oreosyou'll need to specify it manually (i.e. by hand)11:28
N-SIt boots with a resolution just a bit too high for my external vga-svhs box (system connected to the tv as a XBMC).11:28
N-Sok11:28
psycho_oreoshmm then you'll need to re-adjust the modes11:28
N-Scouldn't I force the settings in xorg.conf?11:29
N-Ssetting the modes, I mean11:29
psycho_oreoscomment/delete out the resolutions that your tv can't handle11:29
N-SThere aren't any :-/11:29
psycho_oreoswell if its not specified in xorg.conf, it uses default configuration, if you specify what you want, I think that will override whatever that was set as default11:29
N-SIf it had had them I would've done that before.11:29
psycho_oreoshmm Xorg.*.log may come in handy11:30
N-Sok, I'll just have to set the default somewhere. Ok, will paste that somewhere.11:30
psycho_oreosiirc default is /etc/x11/xorg.conf11:30
psycho_oreosthere's another tool that can display the modes in which a video card can render11:31
psycho_oreosmight come in handy but setting  up the modes manually by hand will be a little challenging without google11:31
N-Shttp://pastie.org/62266911:34
N-Shttp://pastie.org/622670  <= xorg.conf, just default settings11:35
N-S"(II) intel(0): Output VGA using initial mode 1152x86411:39
N-Sthat's where it goes wrong.11:39
N-SIf I just edit my xorg.conf to this http://pastie.org/622672 - then I think it should work. I'll test that on next reboot.11:45

blip-hi all, I recently installed 9.04 and have seen some annoying quirks.... 1)  I can16:10
blip-1) I can't ctrl-alt- backspace  :/16:11
blip-2) The session thing is wierd, it's saving stuff and I end up with multiple programs opening when I log in16:11
blip-3) The login screen (gdm I think) asks me to type username... I want to select from a list and simple insert passwd16:11
blip-any idea about any of these ?16:12
jarnosblip-, as for 3 Xubuntu 9.10 will do16:14
blip-jarnos: I just did a clean install of 9.04.  I think i'll wait at least 6 months before upgrading16:15
blip-jarnos: just because I'd prefer to all to be stable16:15
mdshaw89I think the ctrl-alt-backspace may have been disable for saftey.  I just checked and you can still do a Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc.16:15
mdshaw89the session stuff I have to agree is a HUGE annoyance16:16
mdshaw89it was bad enough when Firefox did it16:16
mdshaw89Not sure who is what the developers are thinking there - it seems as things get farther along I get more and more annoyed by the various "improvements"16:17
mdshaw89at least no one has made the silly mistake of make compiz a default - when that happens I'll be dumping stuff for sure16:18
blip-mdshaw89: I think it can be fixed by playing around the the Session startup menu but I'm not sure what to do.   If you don't have the Session Chooser enabled on login, it seems to go to "Default" session... which already has a million things saved in it16:20
turboooooousing xubuntu 9.10 alpha 6, why does it always ask me for the wifi-password? the keychain password is the same as the login password..16:25
blip-anyone know how to modify the gdm theme ?  I want a theme that let's me just select a username from list and enter pass, rather than type the username too16:36
knomeblip-, there are gdm themes that let you do that16:42
mdshaw89Is this in your menu - System / Administration / Login Screen Setup / Themed Greeter?16:42
mdshaw89can't check mine at this moment16:42
mdshaw89aaaahhhh - this video makes things look easy - http://pcwizkid.blogspot.com/2008/05/ubuntu-gdm-themes-customizing-login.html16:44
blip-mdshaw89, knome:  hmm yes indeed there are settings in the themes...  but it looks like the default 9.04 login screen doesn't have the "Face browser" support.   that's a shame because it looks too good to replace :)16:45
mdshaw89yep16:48
mdshaw89although - I am not a fan of the "show me all of the accounts I can login as" gdm16:49
blip-mdshaw89: cool login screens in my opinion http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Ubuntu+Ikon+GDM+Theme?content=106126        http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Spectrum?content=11104916:49
mdshaw89cool!  - I like this one too - http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Blue+Smoke?content=11141116:53
mdshaw89wow! I had no idea there were so many out there!  I'm usually not a big fan of "flare".  ;)16:55
blip-nice one.  there's nothing like a good looking linux system... perfect on the outside and under the hood too :)16:55
mdshaw89yep - guess I could spruce up the look to go with the cube I'm running on16:56
blip-mdshaw89: yeah I used to go for timid light weight stuff like openbox etc... but then every once in a while I really miss having some eye candy... I moved to KDE4 for a few months but then got frustrated that it wasn't as fast as I wanted.   I finally decided xfce with some themes is a good middle ground16:56
blip-compiz is too much I think... the only time I've used it is to show off what the OS can do and make my windows friend jelous :D16:57
blip-the xfce transparency/compositor is rock solid though16:58
mdshaw89Yep - KDE4 drove me to Xubuntu a few months ago17:01
mdshaw89I had run Kubuntu for about 2years then KDE4 blew it17:02
mdshaw89I had actually been looking at LXDE but it looks like it doesn't have ENOUGH configurable items - I like the speed though17:03
mdshaw89When I switched ti Xubuntu I was hoping I wouldn't get any many Gnome/KDE dependancies but looks like I settle for "not as much".  :(17:06
mdshaw89when I first read the Linus rant I thought he was a bit over the top - but I got top the same point unfortunately. :)17:12
mdshaw89nd the bad thing is I had ALL of my home PCs running Kubuntu so if KDE frustrated me, there was no way I could do that to the rest of my family . . . and stay alive. :)17:12
mdshaw89So I just switched my last PC - my wife's laptop - to Xubuntu 9.04 last weekend and going from KDE3 to Xubuntu has been relatively painless.17:13
jmcandhi I have a problem with the save as function , using Jaunty , since last kernel update  the save as function take a long time and triggers high cpu usage18:03
Cyber_Akuma-LaptI am planning on installing xubuntu as a backup recovery-os on my main desktop, how much space does 9.04 need? I dont have much free space to partition off19:41

vedevedeI need help browsing network shares in xfce.21:20
vedevedeI have installed fusesmb, and I am in the fuse group, and I have a directory I'd like to be for the network (/media/network) but it does nothing.21:20
SiDivedevede: hi there21:21
SiDiWhat are you trying to do exactly ?21:21
vedevedeI have a local network here, and I'm trying to browse local computers' shared documents.21:22
SiDiokey21:22
SiDiso you want to connect to existing samba shares ?21:22
SiDiand you want to mount these samba shares in /media/network automagically ?21:23
vedevedeThe computers I'm trying to connect to are Windows machines, so I doubt they're samba...21:23
vedevedeAnd yes, automagically mounting them to /media/network at startup would be GREAT.21:23
SiDiWindows's protocol is Samba21:23
vedevede... I believe it's just plain smb.21:23
SiDidoesnt smb stand for samba ?21:24
vedevedeI don't think so.21:24
vedevedeBut meh.21:24
vedevedeThey're compatible, so it's irrelevant.21:24
SiDiokey21:24
vedevedeI just want to mount them to /media/network so I can get stuff from them and put things on them.21:24
SiDii think gigolo can do that21:25
SiDii dont have any windows machine so i dont know how to setup smb shares21:25
SiDibut gigolo is meant to handle that21:25
SiDihttp://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/configure-a-system-to-automount-a-samba-share-with-etcfstab/ might also be a way to do it21:26
vedevedeI'm not sure if I have gigolo, and I know I don't know how to use it.21:26
SiDiWhat xubuntu version do you have ?21:28
SiDigigolo is a new app for managing network shares in Xub 9.0421:28
vedevedeI'm using Ubuntu, but with the xfce DE.21:29
vedevedeUbuntu Jaunty21:29
vedevedeOkay, I do have gigolo.21:30
vedevedeAnd it has an icon for "network" but it just brings me to /media/network, which is empty.21:31
vedevede...21:37
vedevedeHonestly, I wonder if this could be made slightly more difficult.21:37
vedevedeSeriously. It should not be this absurd to connect to a network computer.21:38
vedevedeBy this point I have little fragments of crap strewn all over my computer. I have fusesmb in startup, I have a fuse group, both of which obviously WILL NOT DO ANYTHING.21:41
vedevedeWow.21:45
vedevedeNow gigolo doesn't even have the network icon anymore.21:45
vedevede<333333321:46
knome!attitude | vedevede21:48
ubottuvedevede: The people here are volunteers, your attitude should reflect that. Answers are not always available. See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/IrcGuidelines21:48
vedevedeOkay, I've made slight progress. I was able to access my LAN. Once. In a purely linear fashion.21:51
vedevedeie. I could go to a subdirectory, but I was unable to go BACK, or ever reconnect to the LAN.21:52
vedevedeError: Transport endpoint is not connected.21:52
vedevedeOkay.21:54
vedevedeHere's the problem: In gigolo, I can access the LAN ONCE, but after that, if I want to access it again, I have to disconnect from the network completely, then fusesmb /media/network again.21:55
vedevedeRighty-o then. Official Ubuntu-related support is obviously not the way to go when I want Ubuntu-related support. Not once, ever, have I gotten help here, or in #ubuntu.22:04
