jtvlodder: a language doesn't have a trunk12:11

jtvbut the language will start showing up in the full lists of translations for that template.12:11

=== booooooooooooooo is now known as Kapoor
mihawell actually it is more complicated than that :)13:04
lodderby compiling to py with pyrcc13:04
miha1,2,3-4, 5-more13:04
mihabut let's say we survive your english centric ways13:04
jtvmiha: me, English-centric?  Ha!13:04
miha:)13:04
mihafirst we have dual form13:05
miha2 is special case13:05
jtvmiha: ah I see now; I thought sl had 3 forms and then I thought you said it had only 2, but it has 413:05
mihaabout only language beside sanskrt that has it13:05
jtvmiha: the plural expression is (n%100==1 ? 1 : n%100==2 ? 2 : n%100==3 || n%100==4 ? 3 : 0)13:05
mihabut cause word endings match counting word13:05
jtvmiha: which form is which is shown here: https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/+languages/sl13:05
miha3-4 are special cases for most sentences13:05
miha5 is definetly plural13:05
jtvmiha: now, for a string that has a number in it the English has two forms, but you translate to these 4 forms for different values of the number.13:06
lodderRiddell: by compiling to py with pyrcc13:06
mihajtv that's yet another stuff13:06
mihaordering counting words13:06
miha101st13:06
mihasto-prvi (hundred first)13:06
Riddelllodder: pyuic you mean?p13:07
jtvmiha: most of this doesn't matter to LP or gettext because it only knows to create "an array of translations" for the different forms that such a message can take.13:07
lodderRiddell: yea my bad13:07
mihajtv sure, but at the moment i'm lost how technically do that :)13:07
mihahehe13:07
jtvmiha: in the Launchpad UI?  Or in gettext files?13:08
mihalaunchpad?13:08
Riddelllodder: pyuic will use Qt's translation method which isn't gettext and isn't supported by rosetta (or anything except Qt)13:08
lodderRiddell: do you know a way where i could make use of gettext?13:08
Riddelllodder: I tend to load uic files are runtime and overload the translation method to do translations with gettext13:08
Riddelllodder: I'm currently looking for an example13:08
mihai see topic on #ubuntu-si about launchpad translator's "party"13:09
mihafor some release, right? :)13:09
jtvmiha: don't know, you should ask in an Ubuntu channel.  :)13:09
mihajtv for now, help me with example13:10
jtvmiha: digging one up right now13:10
lodderRiddell: that would be nice, if it could get it figured out13:10
miha %sRemoved: %d director$y|ies$, %d file$|s$, %d symlink$|s$13:10
jtvmiha: pretty far out for an example13:10
mihaOdstranjeno: %d imenik$|ov$, %d datotek$a|$, %d simbolčn$a|ih$ povezav$a|$13:11
mihai get the easier ones just well13:11
mihafor singular gotta be imen, datoteka, simbolična povezava13:11
jtvmiha: remember, separate strings.  In English, singular: "Removed: %d directory" and plural: "Removed: %d directories"13:11
mihaimenik, datoteka, simbolična povezava13:11
mihafor plural imenikov, datotek, simboličnih povezav13:12
mihathat's gotta come out of it13:12
jtvmiha: you would translate that combination to 4 separate versions of that entire string13:12
mihadid i guess format fine?13:12
jtvmiha: hang on, still looking for a practical example13:12
mihait's like $|s$ just endings are a bit longer than that :)13:13
jtvmiha: https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/expono/trunk/+pots/expono/sl/247/+translate13:13
jtvmiha: under Slovenian[0] you translate "%d followers" for numbers 5, 6 etc.13:14
jtvmiha: under Slovenian[1] you translate the same string for numbers like 1 and 101.13:15
jtvmiha: under Slovenian[2] you again translate the whole string for numbers 2, 102 etc.13:15
mihajtv i told you this is about ordering, not counting13:15
mihafor counting there are cases 1,2, 3-4, 5-more13:15
mihafor ordering these numbers are valid13:16
miha101 imenikov, 5 imenikov13:16
miha1 imenik13:16
miha2 imenika13:16
miha3 imeniki, 4 imeniki13:16
miha5 imenikov13:16
miha101 imenikov13:16
jtvmiha: so you're saying the choice of forms is not correct for Slovenian?13:16
mihait is perfectly correct for13:16
miha1st folder, 2nd folder, 3rd folder, 101st folder13:17
Riddelllodder: http://paste.ubuntu.com:80/282949/13:17
mihawe are small nation and understand we gotta live by what we have :)13:17
Riddelllodder: so that's replacing the uic.properties.Properties._string method with one of our own which changes how translations are looked up13:18
mihajtv i might be ignorant about senior decisions in ubuntu slo community13:18
Riddelllodder: the last line shows how to load a ui file at runtime13:18
Riddelllodder: do you know how to use gettext?13:18
jtvmiha: I don't think this has much to do with ubuntu; it's probably a choice made somewhere upstream, e.g. gnome.13:18
mihajtv: i can live with just cases 1 and plural (2,3,4 dont sound with plural for 5 or more)13:19
mihadont sound too bad13:19
mihaso english style plural would do13:19
mihait would be a bit wrong for 2,3,4 but we can live with tht :)13:19
jtvmiha: so for ordering you've got separate forms for 1 and 101?13:20
mihaordering is much like english13:20
mihaprvi (first) sto-prvi (hunder-first)13:20
mihahundred-first13:20
mihadrugi sto-drugi13:20
miha2nd one hundred second13:20
jtvmiha: gettext of course doesn't know or care whether you're ordering or counting... are you saying you have separate forms for 1 and 101?13:21
mihano look for counting 101 comes under 5 or more13:21
jtvmiha: so the forms are separate for 1 and 101.13:21
mihaoh13:22
mihai'm wrong13:22
idnarthey're separate in English, too13:22
mihasto-en vojak, sto-dva vojaka sto-trije vojaki, sto-pet vojakov13:22
lodderRiddell: well i don't know much about getttexty13:22
lodderRiddell: well i don't know much about getttext13:22
mihajtv damn i'm not so sure about my language lol13:22
mihai studied much more english grammar than slovenian grammar :913:23
idnar1st item / 101st item for ordering, 1 item / 101 items for counting13:23
jtvmiha: please don't throw the Slovenian text at me; I can't read it anyway and I have a lot of things to deal with at the same time.13:23
mihasorry jtv13:23
mihaback to my original question13:23
jtvmiha: so as idnar points out, if the problem is with 1st and 101st, it's probably not an issue for the translations.13:23
idnarjtv: it seems like the %100 rule you mentioned earlier only makes sense for ordering13:24
mihasuch as %sRemoved: %d director$y|ies$, %d file$|s$, %d symlink$|s$13:24
idnarI don't understand how any of this fits together, though13:24
jtvidnar: I didn't mention a rule, just trying to match what miha is saying to the plural formula  :-)13:25
lodderRiddell: I don't really understand it then how to get the po file, this is how i make use of it now http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~time-drive-devel/time-drive/trunk/annotate/head%3A/timedrive/app.py13:25
idnar< jtv> miha: the plural expression is (n%100==1 ? 1 : n%100==2 ? 2 : n%100==3 || n%100==4 ? 3 : 0)13:25
idnarsorry, that's what I meant by "rule"13:25
mihaidnar so i write 4 forms in this translation13:25
mihaor two? :)13:25
jtvidnar: ah :-)13:26
jtvmiha: you always write 413:26
mihajtv ahh ok, interesting, thx!13:26
jtvmiha: because gettext only knows how to do 1 thing: look up the right form for the number it gets.13:26
idnarthe english version only has 2 forms13:26
idnarso I don't understand13:26
jtvBased on that one formula that idnar just quoted.13:26
mihajtv i get it yes13:26
mihaidnar this would work if you translate 1st, 101st, 2nd 102nd13:27
=== matsubara-afk is now known as matsubara
mihaidnar in this case i guess it applies to english13:27
jtvidnar, implementation trivia: right around the time we hard-coded 4 forms in LP to solve performance problems, the Arabic team was deciding (we found out later) that they needed 6 forms, not 4.  :)13:27
=== matsubara changed the topic of #launchpad to: Read https://help.launchpad.net for help | Help contact: matsubara | Join https://launchpad.net/~launchpad-users | This channel is logged: http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/ | Launchpad is open source: see channel #launchpad-dev
idnarsure, but "%sRemoved: %d director$y|ies$, %d file$|s$, %d symlink$|s$" doesn't have 4 forms as far as I can tell13:27
jtvidnar: it might in some languages13:28
idnarso clearly I'm missing something13:28
idnardoes the last form always get used for "missing" forms, or something?13:28
idnaractually, that doesn't make sense either13:28
mihaidnar: i'd guess it is about 'st, nd, rd, th' for odering in english13:29
idnarthere must be some way that a different plural is invoked13:29
miha1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th13:29
jtvAnd the answer for that seems to be "don't do it."  :)13:29
idnarbecause it wouldn't make any sense to display "101 directory" in English13:29
miha101st directory?13:29
miha 101th directory?13:29
idnarso something must be informing gettext whether to use counting or ordering formula13:29
jtvidnar: there is no ordering formula13:30
idnar(n%100==1 ? 1 : n%100==2 ? 2 : n%100==3 || n%100==4 ? 3 : 0) only makes sense for ordering, as far as I can tell13:30
jtvIn fact off the top of my head I can't of any other languages besides English where this matters when writing numbers in their digit forms.13:30
mihaidnar actually in slovenian word endings kinda match counting word ending13:30
idnarI don't see how that formula could ever let you achieve correct results for counting in english13:31
mihajtv: i learned 1st and stuff in school :)13:31
idnarbecause it selects the same form for 1 and for 10113:31
mihaidnar how do you say 101th.. or one hundred first13:31
idnarmiha: 101st13:31
idnarbut the string you were trying to translate has counting, not ordering13:32
mihaen vojak (one soldier) sto en vojak (one hundred one soldier)13:32
idnarand I would assume there are plenty of examples of counting in many different applications13:32
mihapet vojakov (five soldiers) sto pet vojakov (hundred five soldiers)13:33
idnarwhat I'm saying is, I don't know anything about gettext or rosetta or whatever13:33
mihadva vojaka (two soldiers) sto dva vojaka (hundred two soldiers)13:33
idnarbut if that formula is always applied, then english strings using counting would always be wrong13:33
mihasee how word ending of 'vojak'13:33
miha-zero, -a13:33
mihai must say vojaka if %d is 2 or 102 or...13:34
mihanot vojak13:34
mihaor vojakov13:34
idnarmiha: sure, I'm just talking about the English case13:34
mihaok13:34

Riddelllodder: http://websvn.kde.org:80/trunk/KDE/kdeutils/printer-applet/Messages.sh?view=markup is an example KDE style script to geneate the .pot file, you run it with extract-messages.sh13:49
beunomat_t, doesn't sounds very good, but it also sounds like dead-ayatana is the wrong project?13:50
lodderRiddell: i don't have extract-messages.sh13:52
Riddelllodder: http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?searchon=contents&keywords=extract-messages.sh&mode=exactfilename&suite=jaunty&arch=any13:54
lodderRiddell: ok the extract message is thus purly kde,13:58
lodderRiddell: could I ask you a favour? I know you helped me already a lot but could you halp me modify this http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~time-drive-devel/time-drive/trunk/annotate/head%3A/timedrive/app.py for the translation?14:00
mat_tbeuno: hm, you can go ahead and try for yourself - see if you get the same error https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/module-init-tools/+bug/7701014:00
ubottuLaunchpad bug 77010 in module-init-tools "Overuse of system beep without volume control" [Undecided,Fix released]14:00
lodderRiddell: thx in advance14:00
Riddelllodder: did you get the .pot file generated?14:02
lodderRiddell: no not yet but I have a pot file from the normal py files already14:03
lodderI need to make a second one14:03
Riddelllodder: did  you get the .ui file loading at runtime?14:04
lodderRiddell: no, there for the link so you can show me with my code I understand14:04
beunomat_t, is that the original URL you added the comment in?14:05
mat_tyes14:05
beunomat_t, adding a comment worked just fine14:05
mat_thm, ok then14:05
mat_t:)14:05
beunomat_t, still, the error handlig is bad14:05
mat_twell, yes14:05
beunoso that we will fix in the lazr-js sprint before UDS14:05
beunothat's one of the focuses of the sprint14:05
Riddelllodder: well what's the issue?  instead of the self.ui = Ui_MainWindow() self.ui.setupUi(self) lines  you want a uic.loadUi("myfile.ui", self) line14:06
lodderah ok14:07
lodderI'll try it at one14:07
lodderRiddell: when I do uic.loadUi("myfile.ui", self) the self.ui isn't working any more14:09
lodderRiddell: and from messages.sh $EXTRACTRC is empty here14:10
lodderi use gnome at the moment14:10
Riddelllodder: true self.ui will change, you can do  self.ui = self  for a quick fix14:11
lodderRiddell: and with out a quick fix14:12
Riddelllodder: sed s/self.ui/self/14:12
Riddelllodder: extract-messages.sh doesn't set $EXTRACTRC?14:13
lodderno14:13
lodderbut I have fixed it ok14:13
loddernow I have that working and the ui is read form the file14:13
lodderRiddell: do I need to change anything to my setup.py so it takes the ui files with it?14:15
lodderand what about http://paste.ubuntu.com/282949/ how do i implemented it?14:15
Riddelllodder: yes you'll need to tell setup.py to install somewhere sensible.  /usr/share/<appname>/file.ui is sensible,  then point uic.loadUi at the version there14:16
Riddelllodder: do you have the gettext stuff in?14:17
lodderRiddell: ok, and I have a qrc file also14:17
lodderdo you have the gettext stuff in? what do you mean14:17
lodderRiddell: when i do the uic I lost all my icons :(14:24
Riddelllodder: shrug, I don't know how your icons are loaded, maybe the .qrc file has to be in the same place as the .ui file14:25
mat_tbeuno: ha, got the same error again14:31
beunomat_t, screenshot?14:33
beunoon the same bug?14:33
mat_tbeuno: yes, on a different machine14:34
beunomat_t, so maybe there's a problem in LP14:36
beunomaybe deryck can look at oops reports14:36
mat_tbeuno: will send you a screenshot14:36
beunomat_t, thanks14:37
deryckbeuno, can you point me at a bug or something to catch me up to the discussion?14:37
beunoderyck,14:37
beuno07:39 < mat_t> beuno: I'm trying to add a comment to bug #77010 and I'm getting a following error:Error14:37

mat_tbeuno: sent14:45
deryckmat_t, are you trying to comment while changing the bugtask table on the bug?14:47
mat_tderyck: no14:50
deryckmat_t, ok, thanks.  I'm looking into it now.14:51
deryckmat_t, can you or beuno fwd me the screenshot?14:51
mat_tderyck: email?14:52
deryckmat_t, deryck.hodge at canonical.14:52
deryckmat_t, let me rephrase my earlier question -- did you try to submit you comment from the comment form at the bottom of the page, or the form at the top that is revealed when you click the triangle icon?15:07

rowinggolferI am desperately seeking a mentor to help me use the translations feature of launchpad for my project.16:16
rowinggolferI have got as far as creating a *.po file.16:16
rowinggolferhowever, the app uses qt. (pyqt to be precise)16:17
rowinggolferperhaps a kubuntu dev could tell me if *.ts files and *.po are compatible or convertible?16:17
matsubaraUrsinha, can you help rowinggolfer?16:18
Ursinhamatsubara, I don't know how to help him :/16:18
Ursinhahenninge, do you know?16:18
henningerowinggolfer: I am sorry, I cannot help you there. Maybe jtv could but you couldn't you also ask for help in the kubuntu channel?16:20
rowinggolfermatsubara: Ursinha, no worries. i have volunteers to do Spanish and now French16:21
rowinggolferhenninge: will do.16:21
henningerowinggolfer: I understand correctly, that you have not yet been able to create a .po/.pot file?16:21
rowinggolferno, I have made a .po file for a small part of the gui.16:22
rowinggolferqt-designer created it16:22
henningerowinggolfer: so is your question about how to get it into Launchpad?16:23
henningeThere I could help.16:23
rowinggolferyes.16:23
matsubarathanks henninge and Ursinha16:24
rowinggolferhenninge: my major concern is wasting people's time.16:25
rowinggolferhaving a Spanish and French version of the app is of little to no concern of me... but I wouldn't want someone to spend hours creating a translation I can't use.16:26
rowinggolferand it was a bit of a hack getting this one *.po file16:26
rowinggolferheaven knows if I could utilise a *.pot16:26
henningerowinggolfer: the po file that you get extracted from your source code is called a PO template, hence name .pot.16:35
henningerowinggolfer: If you want to have your app translated in Launchpad, you will still read up on how the whole localization process works.16:37
henningerowinggolfer: you'll find information on our help wiki: https://help.launchpad.net/16:38
henningerowinggolfer: but that does not explain the part that needs to be done on your side to get the template out of the software and the translations back in.16:39
henningerowinggolfer: reading up on gettext might be a good start.16:39
henningebut I have to go now, sorry.16:39

ikanoboriDear sirs, how do I make Launchpad recognize me when I commit.16:53
ikanobori(my ssh key is saved at Launchpad)16:54
beunoikanobori, make sure that your commit identity has your email16:54
beuno(bzr whoami)16:54
beunoand that you have that email address registered in Launchpad16:54
ikanoboribeuno: Aha, thanks :-)16:55
beunomrevell, kfogel, we should make this more obvious  ^16:55
ikanoboriAnd how to set my identity?16:55
beuno*somehow*16:55
ikanoboriAh, found it.16:56
rowinggolferI know henninge is away, but I fear he is wrong that *.po == *.pot17:04
rowinggolfer.po I can make.17:04
rowinggolferhttp://bazaar.launchpad.net/%7Erowinggolfer/openmolar/trunk/revision/368/src/openmolar/translations/main.po17:04
rowinggolferbut that's no blinking use to anyone.17:04
rowinggolferunless I am missing something here?17:05
rowinggolferis the english .po == .pot ?17:05
rowinggolferreading from https://help.launchpad.net/Translations/YourProject BTW.17:06
rowinggolfereither way, mine got rejected :(17:07
matsubararowinggolfer, I think po is a file for a specific language while pot is the template17:08
MethsI thought a pot compiled to a po, so being similar to a ts compiling to a qm in PyQt?  I haven't found any PyQt i18n literature that mentions po or pot though.17:10
matsubararowinggolfer, so from what little I understand from this issue, I think you need some way for your application to generate a .pot file which you then upload to LP. LP will generate .po files for each language available and then translation volunteers will use the po file to translate your software in their languages17:10
matsubarathat's my understanding of it and of course I might be wrong and would be happy to be corrected :-)17:11
matsubararowinggolfer, so since the Translations guys who can help you out are not around atm, I suggest you to ask in https://launchpad.net/rosetta/+addquestion17:12
matsubararowinggolfer, once you ask there, let me know the question URL and I'll assign to someone who can definitely answer that for you.17:13
rowinggolfermatsubara: thanks.17:19
rowinggolferfound my answer now http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/gettext.html#Template17:19
rowinggolferxgettext creates a file named domainname.po. You should then rename it to domainname.pot.17:19
rowinggolferit then goes on to explain why it doesn't... for "historical reasons" do that outa the box :(17:20
matsubararowinggolfer, https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/rosetta/+question/6274 and https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/rosetta/+question/35181 might help you out as well17:21
rowinggolfermatsubara: thanks.17:22
rowinggolferActually, for my app, the gnu way is better than the qt way.17:23
rowinggolferI think I'm done. thanks all.17:23
matsubararowinggolfer, sure, np. :-)17:23
