Balsaqanyone in here know anyhting about partitioning10:52
TheSheep!partition10:52
ubottuFor help with partitioning a new install see: https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/switching/installing-partitioning.html - For partitioning programs see !GParted, !QtParted (!Kubuntu 8.10 and lower) or !PartitionManager (!Kubuntu 9.04 and up) - Other partitioning topics include !fstab !home and !swap10:52
TheSheepBalsaq: ask a specific question10:53
Balsaqi already di my install, now was told i may not have done a coeerect partition, using the most favorable filing system. now i want to learn how to look in my computer and see if i used the most favorable filing sytem when i did my install?10:55
Balsaqi checked you r link and it seemd to think it was done in the most favorable way?10:55
Balsaqi want to know which file system it chose for me?10:56
TheSheepopen a terminal and type 'mount'10:56
Balsaqok10:56
Balsaqlotta stuff written in there10:57
TheSheepthe first line is something like  /dev/sda3 on / type ext4 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro,commit=600)10:57
TheSheepwhat's after the 'type' tells you what filesystem you are using10:57
TheSheepext4 in this case10:57
Balsaqtmpfs on|lib|init|rw type tmpfs (rw,nosnid,mode=0755)11:00
Balsaqis that it11:00
Balsaqor next line11:00
Balsaqthat is the line after the dev line11:01
Balsaqgetting my notes BRB11:01
Balsaqthis guy was saying do to gparted, set partiton size, but before i apply set to ext 3 or 4, then do the boot flag...all this stuff i didnt do when i di my install...he says when a computer was a windows compouter is best to set it up a cetain way to utuilize the best filing system11:05
Balsaqso as far as i know i am ok...but he is telling me this BS? just wondering if i did the correct thing eventhough none of this happened?11:06
Balsaqi just put  the disc in and ot went in, at one pint it showed w98 and bubtu and a blinking curser...i decided at that moment to wipe out w98 and did it...then iwent on with install of buntu CLEAN. so ifthat is partitioning and using the correct file system then i did it. but i never did all the steps he tolm about?11:13
Balsaqdoe sanyone have a comment on this, did i do it right even though i never did all the stuff he mentioned?11:15

ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about harddisk11:35
KXDTRAU_MU!harddrive11:35
ubottuFor help with partitioning a new install see: https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/switching/installing-partitioning.html - For partitioning programs see !GParted, !QtParted (!Kubuntu 8.10 and lower) or !PartitionManager (!Kubuntu 9.04 and up) - Other partitioning topics include !fstab !home and !swap11:35
NickDeNegerKXDTRAU_MU: sudo fdisk -l11:36
KXDTRAU_MUto run or to terminal?11:36
NickDeNegerterminal11:36
Balsaqthough the link is great, its kinda like telling a kid..."here he need heart surgery just make that incision here" and expecting him to feel comfortable doing it or worse yet thinking he will be successful 1st time.11:36
KXDTRAU_MUi did Alt f2 and then paste the command11:37
NickDeNegerit's a terminal program11:37
KXDTRAU_MUok11:37
NickDeNegerso you should open the terminal itself11:37
KXDTRAU_MUhmmmm ok now i do see drives11:38
KXDTRAU_MUhow do i see inside of other disk?11:39
NickDeNegerso you see them11:39
NickDeNegerand you would like to add them to your current filesystem?11:39
KXDTRAU_MUyes.i do see them but i dont want to format either make partition of11:39
KXDTRAU_MUyes11:39
NickDeNegeris there already data on it? and if so what is the current file system?11:40
KXDTRAU_MUit shows the data and other stuff in the disks11:40
KXDTRAU_MUyes11:40
KXDTRAU_MUthere is data inside11:41
KXDTRAU_MUmp3s :)11:41
NickDeNegerwhat filesystem is used?11:41
KXDTRAU_MUhmm11:41
KXDTRAU_MUthe first on is linux one11:41
NickDeNegeryou could see that in the fdisk -l output11:41
KXDTRAU_MUNTFS and FAT3211:42
KXDTRAU_MUmixed11:42
NickDeNegerthe ntfs and fat32 should already appear on your desktop the linux one you can mount via mount or fstab11:43
NickDeNeger!fstab11:43
ubottuThe /etc/fstab file indicates how drive partitions are to be used or otherwise integrated into the file system. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Fstab and http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/fstab.html and !Partitions11:43
KXDTRAU_MUis there any programme which simplifies the commands?11:44
NickDeNegernot that i know sorry11:45
KXDTRAU_MUits not on the desktop11:45

Balsaqi'm lucky i guess  ithrw ubuntu in, didnt do none of this extra stuff and whoala it runs? sounds like i am now suposed to partition or fininsh the partition but the computer doesnt seem to care...11:47
KXDTRAU_MUHPFS/NTFS11:48
KXDTRAU_MU/dev/sdb111:48
KXDTRAU_MUhow can i reach this /dev/sdb1  ?11:48
Balsaqcan read the links all day long but they don't mean a gd thing to me11:48
NickDeNegerKXDTRAU_MU: first make a directory in: /media11:49
NickDeNegerfor example /media/ntfs111:49
KXDTRAU_MUok, now somehow i managed to see the harddrives, i wanted to open a shortcut and now in the shortcut menu11:49
KXDTRAU_MUi do see 20 gb media and 10gb media and also i other hd11:50
NickDeNegerthen you can type: sudo ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /media/ntfs111:50
NickDeNegeryeah that are the linux drives11:50
NickDeNegerthe ntfs and the fat32 drive should be named11:50
NickDeNegerthis ones you can just open by clicking on the icons11:51
NickDeNegerthe linux drives you need to mount manually or automatically at boottime using fstab11:51
NickDeNeger!mount11:51
ubottumount is used to attach devices to directories. See also https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount11:51
NickDeNeger!fstab11:51
ubottuThe /etc/fstab file indicates how drive partitions are to be used or otherwise integrated into the file system. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Fstab and http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/fstab.html and !Partitions11:51
KXDTRAU_MUhow can i format them?11:53
NickDeNeger!format11:55
ubottuFor help with partitioning a new install see: https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/switching/installing-partitioning.html - For partitioning programs see !GParted, !QtParted (!Kubuntu 8.10 and lower) or !PartitionManager (!Kubuntu 9.04 and up) - Other partitioning topics include !fstab !home and !swap11:55
NickDeNeger!GParted11:55
ubottugparted is a !GTK/!Gnome !GUI partitioning program. Type « sudo apt-get install gparted » in a console to install it - A GParted "live" CD is available at http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php11:55
balsaqif i go to add/remove and uncheck the system monitor program, will it completely disappear forever or just stay in there, but be disabled? i don't want to lose it, just disable it.11:56
NickDeNegerGParted can be used as graphical format utilitie11:56
NickDeNegerutility*11:56
NickDeNegerbut just like in windows the drives need to be unmounted than11:56
KXDTRAU_MUhmmm11:56
KXDTRAU_MUi am downloading it11:56
NickDeNegerKXDTRAU_MU: you can use also get it via the add/remove application or apt-get or what so ever11:57
NickDeNegerbalsaq: then it will be removed permently (untill you reinstall it)11:57
NickDeNegerbalsaq: what do you want to do?11:57
NickDeNegerremove it from the menu?11:58
balsaqglad i asked...just want to disable the system monitor it is sucking up 25-50 percent of my cpu dont need it, but dont want to get rid of it altogether11:58
NickDeNegeryou can just close the application?11:59
balsaqwas hoping that un-checking it in add remove would be like turning it off...not throwing it in the trash want to keep it just turn it off11:59
balsaqoh it doesnt run in the background all the time?12:00
NickDeNegerwhen you close the application it doesn't consume anymore resources12:00
NickDeNegernope ^^12:00
balsaqOH OK12:00
balsaqwhew some people have told me somepretty wild stories ill tell you12:00
balsaqhad i guy tell me to dump it...i am thinking its a nice feature why dump it...just turn it off12:01
NickDeNegeryou can also check the running applications in the console with: ps -Al12:01
balsaqyes i did that is when isaw it was running12:01
balsaqwhen firefox and syst mon are on i am at 100% cpu!12:02
balsaqi hope we are on the same page have seen many misunderstandings in here since i started12:02
NickDeNegerSystem Monitor only uses resources when it is running12:03
balsaqhow do you know it is not running right now-curious12:04
Sysiarora is lighter12:04
Sysiand still very nice briwser12:04
Sysi*browser12:04
balsaqi will stay with this until i can feel the ground under my feet12:05
balsaqbut i can tell she is bloooaateeed12:05
KXDTRAU_MUok i did mount command but still no harddrives12:05
balsaqold cpu here12:05
balsaqthis is like open source vista ...luv it though12:06
NickDeNegerbalsaq: you can see that using ps -Al12:07
NickDeNegerps -Al |  grep gnome12:07
NickDeNegerif you don't see gnome-system-monitor in the ps list it's not running :)12:07
balsaqso do a command12:07
balsaq?12:07
KXDTRAU_MU:)12:08
NickDeNegerbalsaq: if you type: ps -Al | grep gnome in the terminal and you don't see gnome-system-monitor in that list the system monitor is not running in the background12:08
NickDeNegerKXDTRAU_MU: you won't see it as a harddrive but you should be able to see the data when you enter the directory where you mounted the disk12:09
balsaq6 things but none say system monitor...but a lot say gnome so are we cool?12:09
balsaqwonder why that other dud told me to dump it12:10
NickDeNegeryeah your cool12:10
balsaqor maybe he said "uncheck gnome" is a power hog?12:11
KXDTRAU_MUi am allready copying it Nick.:)) 1.70celeron cpu and 300mb ram, still working :)12:11
NickDeNegerk nice12:11
balsaqtrying to learn it all in a week,,,,hate bein a dumb asz12:11
KXDTRAU_MUto copy somestuff from harddrive, there is an easy way : just creating a shortcut then when you see the harddrive opening it and copying the files from it :)) i didnt use any commands :D guess i am lucky :)))12:12
balsaqwell thanks Nick i just about killed that feature12:12
NickDeNegerbalsaq: gnome is quite a heavy desktop enviremond you could also take a look at xubuntu which is way lighter and require less system resources12:13
balsaqi also purchase that too have it in my hand right here and puppy12:13
NickDeNegerbut you probably are already running it since you're in this channel lol12:13
balsaqnope not yet but i have the disc12:14
balsaqthe ubuntu came in the mail 1st then got puppy and xubu12:14
balsaqi knew i needed it to be light but couldnt wait when i saw the ubu and tossed it in12:15
KXDTRAU_MUi installed ubuntu into my 8gb usb and try it in my laptop. can i use the whole system without damaging my vista system?? i do want to install whole ubuntu into usb drive.is it possible nick?12:15
balsaqnow i have the 2 lightweight ones but already spent 6 hours getting ubunntu in plus 3 hrs a couple days after doing the 9.04 update so i am too burnt out to do it again for awhile12:17
NickDeNegerKXDTRAU_MU: it is possible to make your usb-stick a live cd but i don't know if you can install it on an usb stick as well probably you can12:17
NickDeNeger!usb-creator12:17

NickDeNegerif you have at running from usb you can also use should also be able to use it in your other PC without damaging the current OS12:19
NickDeNegeri'm not quite shure though :P12:19
KXDTRAU_MU?)12:19
KXDTRAU_MU:)12:19
balsaqi heard i can do a line command and change to xubu very easily12:19
NickDeNegerbalsaq: nice, never worked with puppy linux though12:19
balsaqwell i have xubuntu disc too12:20
NickDeNegerbalsaq: sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop12:21
balsaqwill that lighten it all up just doing that12:21
NickDeNegerbut i had some problems because it was screwing up some of my gnome icons to some quite ugly one12:22
NickDeNegerehh you probably have to remove de ubuntu-desktop aswell there should be some tutorial at internet which tells you how to switch from ubuntu to xubuntu (or kubuntu (but this is also quite heavy))12:22
balsaqthat is a joke right?12:23
balsaqoh so xubu is still heavy too12:23
balsaqthen if i do jump down on this old timer i may as well jump wwaaayyy down12:24

SiDilikemindead: wheren't you asked already to not use away messages ? :/16:41
* likemindead is back (gone 00:25:50)16:50
TheSheeplikemindead: can you please turn that off? we are not interested17:01
likemindeadYes... I can see I'm disturbing so much valuable chat going on...17:02
Pres-Gaslikemindead, I will say, from a more practical perspective, that these channels are logged and extra chattiness can muddle a search of those logs.  http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/17:07
Pres-GasI personally do not care one way or another....it does not really annoy me, BUT for the reason above turning off the away messages is a good thing.17:08
likemindeadI just love the irony that the conversations about removing away messages, nick changes, and such take up more space than the original cause.17:09
Pres-GasMore social related servers/channels the away message can be a good thing....but in this help forum, if all of us turned it on...and the bot logged that...the signal to noise ratio would not be good.17:09
likemindeadUnderstood.17:09
likemindeadI will rectify.17:10

SiDiXubuntu karmic beta is going to be released soon. If you're interested in helping out testing Xubuntu, please have a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Xubuntu/Testing18:45
Pres-GasThanks, SiDi!18:48
SiDithanks to you if you take upon your time to help xubuntu ;)18:49
* SiDi reboots his browser to test gnash18:50
SiDidamn, wrong channel18:50
Pres-GasI have a Dell Latitude 2100 ready to receive said Beta iso18:50
SiDiyou can test the Alpha 6 right now if you want18:50
SiDiit's pretty stable18:50
SiDihttp://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/daily/current/ or that18:50
SiDithere will be no changes from now till beta on the Xubuntu side, only some stuff coming from Ubuntu core, so it's actually ready for testing, imo18:51
Pres-GasI will accept that, SiDi, I forgot about the daily builds18:52
SiDii'm personally out of CD's, so that stopped any testing effort :D18:55
tavastiwhich I should use, alpha or daily build if I want to install now?19:13
geniitavasti: The stable release is recommended (9.04)19:17
geniitavasti: If you feel like using 9.10 (Karmic) perhaps hang out in #ubuntu+1 for questions/problems19:18
tavastiok, I'll join that19:22
tavastitemptation to use karmic is strong19:24
tavastiok, few minutes on #ubuntu+1 and now the temptation to go with karmic is much smaller...19:35
likemindeadI've been using Karmic since the Alpha 6 dropped.19:46
likemindeadNo huge problems.19:46
tavastilist of known issues on wiki doesn't look bad, but on +1 channel they talk about 'why should we release unstable beta'19:48
geniitavasti: Yes, exactly19:49
tavastiI'm not sure what to believe19:49
geniiAlpha5 made my box unusable, I've since reverted to 9.04 with 9.10 on an external usb stick install19:50
tavastilikemindead, do you have flashplugin-nonfree on your karmic?20:05
likemindeadI do, tavasti. And it works better than ever before! :-)20:16
likemindead(Old PIII laptop.)20:16
tavastithanks20:18
tavastiso it looks like there is no relevant bugs for me20:19
tavastiI didn't read resolved/fix commited etc bugs, but I assume such fixes will be released soon20:20
