=== ubuntu is now known as Nathan`
Nathan`hi, I just installed xubuntu usb on my usb drive, but I don't know how I can easily add programs to the applications menu which I just installed (kismet and aircrack) thanks in advance01:14
varaderohi02:44
Paul1957aahi all. xubuntu has been running fine. I love it. but now I suddenly have no panel on startup. any suggestions?02:45
likemindeadWhich version are you running, Paul1957aa?02:46
Paul1957aaerrr... 9. 0402:47
likemindeadIt happened to me once, Paul1957aa, and this fixed it for me: http://www.anujpathania.blogspot.com/2008/06/xubuntu-panels-disappear.html02:47
Paul1957aathanks02:47
likemindeadGood luck!02:47
Paul1957aaand now my panel is back. thanks again.02:49
seyDoggymy daughters somehow managed to hide or close or remove the desktop panels. How do I get them back?03:41

Balsaqtechie-howdo?, hey can you tell me how to do a terminal command so i can see if i really wiped out w98? in my "netwrk" place it shows a picture of a computer that is labeled "windows computer"?05:52
longtimeWould anyone be able to tell me how to set my wireless usb card as my network interface device. I just re-installed on another computer and the wifi card seems to be ignored.05:56
longtimeI've checked to see that my computer was recognizing the device, and found that it was.05:57
TechieBalsaq- if it is showing up in your network center then its from another machine as while ubuntu is loaded, windows cannot possibly be loaded06:05
Balsaqtechie: yeah i got into the termina;l and all its says in there in linux, extended, linux swap/solaris...so it is wiped out. no biggie but its like ubuntu knows it used to be a windows computer, becasue we dont have any other computers wxcept the g4 running leopard.06:14
Techiethe G4 may have a samba share06:15
Balsaqits weird one day it has 2 windows computer and one apple in my network, today just one windows puter06:17
Techieodd06:17
Balsaqand no ubuntu or linux puters...prolly nuthin just wonderin out loud06:17
Techiedo you have a wireless connection?06:17
Balsaqi do but its for the g4 this ubuntu/dell is hard wired to the dsl06:18
Techieyeah, but is the connection secured?06:18
Balsaqwep with a password06:18
Techiesomeone in your area may have sniffed your wep key06:19
Balsaqeven i my wireless get s haccked it shouldnt have nuthin to do woth the dell, it plugged in06:19
Balsaqi can turn off the wireless thing right now it ill still be right here06:19
Techieyour not understanding, your dell is connected to the network, the wireless is a part of your network... everything connected to the wireless is in your network06:20
Balsaqwow i wanted the dell secure ill throw that flippin router in the river06:20
Techiedont06:20
Techiewep keys get sniffed all the time06:20
Techiei used to do it myself06:21
Techieits not the router its just that wep was good back in its day06:21
Balsaqeven so the router i have is so cheap we lose our own connwction on the g4 in the backyard 15 feet from the house06:21
Techiehowever vulnerabilities have been found in its encryption system06:21
Techiejust change your wep key and the windows computer should hopefully dissapear06:22
Balsaqthey would almost have to sit on my porch to use it its so weak06:22
Techieis your router located @ one end of your house?06:23
ddmnxi got an old belkin wireless router and i just got a netbook with an 802.11n wireless card and its been crapping out on me on and off since i got it06:23
Balsaqin the basement one one end yes06:23
TechieBalsaq- is it a concrete walled basement?06:23
Balsaqguess ill turn it off and let the jackers take that...yes concrete06:24
Techieaah06:24
Techiei know why your having signal issues06:24
ddmnxyet i would think if the router is incompatible with a 802.11n wireless card it just wouldnt get internet, right?06:24
Techiethe metal re inforcing in the concrete walls is acting as a faraday cage06:24
Techieddmnx- 802.11n just means its able to use 802.11n, it will also work with B and G based connections06:25
TechieBalsaq- just swap your wep key out for a new one06:25
ddmnxoooooh06:25
ddmnxyo techies, i got a random question, im assuming u guys have ur a+ certs right? im going for my essentials test next week, anything in specific i should look out for?06:27
Techieddmnx- im an 18 year old that hasnt got any computer qualifications06:28
Techieddmnx- i just have taught myself ALOT, peices of paper dont mean much to me06:28
ddmnxlol nice.  im really new to ubuntu, but i wanna learn alot more about how linux works, and i dont wanna flood the chat with questions, u guys got any sites ud suggest?06:31
Techieddmnx- google06:31
ddmnxhah. alright06:31
Balsaqthat was really weird!06:32
Techieddmnx- also learn how to use the forums to their full potential06:32
Techiewelcome back bal06:32
Balsaqso what the h___ is going on06:32
Balsaqi couldnt type06:32
Techieyou pinged06:32
TechieBalsaq has quit (Ping timeout: 180 seconds)06:32
Balsaqis that becasuse i turned on the wireless g4?06:33
Techiemove your wireless router out of your basement and change your wep key06:33
Balsaqbasement helps it get hacked?06:34
Techieno, just makes the signal crap06:34
Balsaqwell that would make it crap for hackers right06:34
Techiethe steel reinforcing in the walls act as a faraday cage06:34
Balsaqo06:34
TechieBalsaq- they will have a hard time hacking it if you change your wep key every now and again06:34
Techieor upgrade to wpa06:34
Balsaqcause everytime my wife comes home from work i have to in the basement and turn it off and then on for her g4 to pick up the connection06:35
Techieim not sure if that will fix that but it will allow you to get a much better connection06:36
Balsaqi suppose i shoould also turn it off when we are not home06:37
Techieif you want to06:37
Techieare you able to upgrade to WPA?06:37
Balsaqdo iahve to buy a new router or just upgrade06:37
Techiethere may be a setting in your routers wireless settings06:38
Balsaqill tell you though i really dont like wireless-less secure no matter how you cut it06:38
Techienot really wep is becoming easy to crack with regular tools06:39
Techiebut wpa and wpa2 are still proving to be much harder to crack06:39
Techiehowever if you want to keep using wep, i would suggest changing your key atleast once a week06:40
Balsaqi read about it seemed like a long drawn out process and my neighors have a lot more money than us...i seriously doubt they are hackingg...very old people who are seldom here at all06:40
Balsaqmost dont even live here in the winter06:40
Techieit could be people that are war driving06:40
Balsaqwhat the heck is that06:41
ddmnxpulling up in their car and cracking ur sh!t06:41
ddmnxfrom the road06:41
Techiehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wardriving06:41
Balsaqbut we live on a dead end...zero and i mean zero traffic...none06:42
Balsaqi read that hack it take some time06:43
Techiewow06:43
Techiethen theres something freaky going on with your network06:43
Balsaqso have we ruled out the hack yet06:43
Balsaqyou are on the money with some stuff cause now it shows my wife in my network twice and one windows computer...so ubuntu knows me as windows computer?06:44
Balsaqi must have been mistaken before when i sadi 2 windows puter and the g406:45
Balsaqits 2 g4's and the windows puter06:45
Techiethe 2x G4's may be caused by a ghost of the G4 laptop06:46
ddmnxyo balsaq, how do u check the computers on ur network in ubuntu?06:46
Balsaqso my wife must have 2 whipdee doos on her g4 2 log ins or something...and ubuntu has named my dell "windows....casue i dint...and i never set up the network so ubuntu did it all for me-tough being a flipping computer dork06:47
Balsaqi just went into comuter-hit file system and hit network06:47
Techieddmnx- you can also issua a broadcast ping06:47
Techieissue*06:48
ddmnxhow do u do that?06:48
Techieping -b broadcast_address06:48
Balsaqdi i dont see how a hard wired computer with no wifi can sence a wifi and then name in my network06:48
Balsaqwho knew?06:48
Techiei did06:48
Techiewifi is just a extension of a wired connection without the use of cables06:49
Balsaqgod bless new zealand06:49
Techiewhy NZ?06:49
Balsaqi dunno thought you lived there06:50
Techieyeah06:50
Techiei do06:50
Balsaqusually we say g b america you know06:50
Techiewe usually say, thank god we got that shit working intime06:50
Techiejust kidding06:51
Balsaqim gonna turn off the g4 and the wireless and see if it pings me off again06:51
Techiehes gone06:53

Balsaqwierd...hard wired dell/ubuntu puter get booted sometimes when i turn off the wireless router06:56
Balsaqthen icouldnt get back on this time until iturned the router on06:56
Techieis your wireless provided by the same peice of equipment that provides your wired connection?06:56
Balsaqoh now i getit06:56
Techieeg modem -> router -> wireless + wired06:57
Balsaqit is 2 at once that black box is...06:57
Balsaqyup that it06:57
Techiehehe06:57
Balsaqbut the 1st time iturned it off, i got back on while it wqs off06:57

Balsaqmaybe there is a delay in the time06:58
Techiewho knows06:58
Balsaqbut anyway i get it now...when i got the dsl they had a specialwhere i also got the router, so it a dual thing for dsl and wireless06:59
Balsaqknowing werizon its prolly a cheapie too06:59
Balsaqbut anyway a hacker running on me would need to be close too me ...right?07:00
Balsaqthis ubuntu stuff is pretty amazing for being free...07:03
Balsaqhey if i run 2 monitors will it slow my ole 400mgz down to a crawl?07:04
Techiedepends if your graphics card can handle it07:11
Balsaqhey techie need a favor07:21

Techiebut yeah, in my opinion it is a decent price07:30
Balsaqbut for 250? a tech at a local computer store admitted he built his own out of a e5200 and it cost him 35007:31

SerraphynHey can you guys tell me a way to do try FPS benchmarking? I'm trying to see if my low FPS in cedega is from cedega or Driver18:42
arthurjohnsonSerraphyn: xgears18:43
arthurjohnsoner18:43
arthurjohnsonSerraphyn: glxgears18:43
Serraphynthats nto real FPS though I seen18:44
Serraphyn64453 frames in 5.0 seconds = 12890.576 FPS18:44
Serraphyn <--- don't think I'm getting 12k FPS18:44
arthurjohnsonHm. Not giving me info at all on my laptop.  Probably doing something wrong.  I thought that was the way to get FPS information.18:45
TheSheep12k fps is possible with glxgears, it's a very simple scene18:46
SerraphynI'm installing Nexuiz now, just found out it has an FPS display so I can see if its my system or cedega18:48

DarkiHi! How do I change the icon that is displayed on the login screen (next to my user name) in xfce?21:10
SiDiDarki: i think you have to create a .face file21:15
SiDiwhich would be an image21:15
Darkiokay, does it have to have a specific name? do I have to set it up in some config file?21:19
Darkiwhat image formats are supported? or where do I look for more info (man page? howtos? etc.)21:19
Sysitest? :)21:20
Geoffrey2hey folks, today i installed xubuntu on a laptop that used to have ubuntu on it....I did a fresh install with new partitions....now I can't connect to the wireless modem...I could under ubuntu....and another computer running ubuntu still CAN connect to the router21:21
Sysisame version?21:21
Geoffrey29.04 on both21:22
Pres-GasGeoffrey2, can it even see the access point?21:23
Geoffrey2Pres-Gas, it's looks like it's connecting, then comes back and tells me a passkey is required21:23
SiDiDarki: i suppose png/jpg/gif, even svg21:24
SiDithe file must be name ".face"21:24
SiDiin your home21:24
SiDii didnt test it though, but if you google ".face" gdm you may find pages about it21:24
Geoffrey2Authentication required by wireless network......21:25
Geoffrey2which is strange, because I supply the password....same one the other computer uses without difficulty.....21:25
Sysidifferent tupe of key?21:26

Geoffrey2I have a laptop that had ubuntu on it, and it connected to the network just fine....today I did a fresh install of xubuntu 9.04, installed the wireless drivers, the wireless card is up and running...I keep getting a request for the network WPA password, but it's never accepted, even though two other computers connect fine using the same password22:19
