natschilHello. I would like to suggest that the following patch/workaround http://reviewboard.kde.org/r/1755/ be put into  the ubuntu packages, as not doing so would break the user experience for some of those of use who use compiz and kde together from 4.2 to 4.317:09
SeicherlBoBIs there a way to disable wifi and bluetooth on system startup (except rc.local)? Something like parameters when loading the modules?17:14
jhutchins_ltI suppose you could blacklist the driver, or alias it off.17:14
SeicherlBoBjhutchins_lt: i dont want to disable it completely, i only want it to be powered off at startup and start them on demand with acpi keys17:15
jhutchins_ltSeicherlBoB: Have a look at startup services.17:16
SeicherlBoBjhutchins_lt: what do you mean by that?17:16
SeicherlBoBjhutchins_lt: i could just put the kill-wifi commands to rc.local, but i thougt there was another "nicer" way.17:17

So i tried but it did not work, over at their channel they said I miss mp3 codecs and that I should ask here how to get them. Could someone please guide me?17:48

dwidmannKarlita: anyhow, I would try blacklisting either it or the other soundcard because they might conflict18:45
Karlitadwidmann: sure i can blacklist the creative. How tho?18:45
dwidmannKarlita: create a file in the /etc/modprobe.d/ folder - you can call it whatever you want to. in that file put "blacklist emu20k1", save it and restart.18:47
Karlitadwidmann: Oki, one second, gonna google how to create a file18:48
dwidmannKarlita: you'll need admin privileges to do it ... so pull up run command (alt + f2), type in 'kdesudo kate' (kdesudo will get you the root privileges, kate is a text editor)18:48

NoReflexyeah : flash, skype, kopete, smplayer22:03
NoReflexI went to the configuration options multimedia and there are two options there: HDA Intel STAC92xx Analog and PulseAudio22:04
devilsadvocate_NoReflex, yeah, those have been there for a while.22:05
devilsadvocate_NoReflex, i used to have that problem with sounds from gtk apps, if that information is of any use22:05
devilsadvocate_NoReflex, it sort of went away by itself after updates. but that was over a year ago22:06
NoReflexIf I try to play a test sound with pulseaudio it says : the device pulseaudio does not work falling back to stac..... and it plays the sound22:06
devilsadvocate_NoReflex, you could then switch the hda intel one to the preferred device22:06

devilsadvocate_NoReflex, and maybe see why pulseaudio isnt doing what its supposed to22:07
NoReflexthe HDA intel is the preferred device (top of the list)22:07

NoReflexit seems the sound only appears when "starting the audio device"; for example if I have a application that uses the soundcard(a movie playing in smplayer at low volume) and I try to generate other sounds(test sounds, skype sounds, notification sounds) the crackling doesn't appear22:13
uboxis kde uber better than gnome?22:14
NoReflexthis also works with a flash movie in a browser window and even works if the videos (smplayer, flash) are paused22:15
NoReflexubox: I used gnome for about a year and switched to kde about two days ago and I must say I really like KDE4.3. I still have some minor issues (kopete doesn't work well with yahoo accounts, few konsole fonts and a few other) but IMHO KDE4.3 is better than Gnome (2.26, 2.28)22:17
uboxit sure looks better! :) i was looking a screenshots and it has cool things like transparencies built in22:18
NoReflexubox I think the thing I like most in KDE4 is the Kwin composite window manager- you can have cool desktop effects without installing compiz; oh yeah...and the widgets22:19
uboxi am downloading the iso for kubuntu, i already have ubuntu and when i grab my new laptop later today i will take both for a test spin. it is a 64bit as of now i run an old ppc22:19
uboxyea i like widgets22:20
NoReflexubox: Jaunty or Karmic?22:20
uboxjaunty22:21
uboxis karmic a huge jump?22:21
uboxi'm on intrepid now, i tried to auto upgrade to jaunty and everything broke22:22
NoReflexWell, my notebook (Dell Inspiron 1520) did have some issues with Jaunty's kernel (2.6.28) - random lockups. I solved the problem in jaunty by manually installing 2.6.31 kernel; Karmic comes with that kernel and a few other nice features as well - upstart for example22:23
NoReflexFor me Kubuntu Karmic beta works very well22:23
uboxoh, so maybe i should download the 9.10 kubuntu before i burn it22:24
uboxooo, they are in beta now22:25
NoReflexubox: I never managed to do a distribution upgrade (upgrade-manager -d) so that it would work well. I always had to install a fresh copy of the version I wanted to upgrade to22:25
uboxoh, i should have tried that lol. are the regular desktop iso's the live cd ones?22:26
NoReflexyes -  you can test or install with those CD's22:26
uboxnice22:27

uboxmaybe i will make a switch to kubuntu after tonight. some guy in #ubuntu yelled at me for asking which version they preferred. saying something about it being for support blah blah22:28
uboxso far people in here are nicer22:28
LjLubox: only because it's absurdly silent lately, otherwise the rules are the same22:29
LjL#ubuntu is too busy for the 1400 people in it to all answer what they prefer22:29
LjLthere's #ubuntu-offtopic for that22:29
LjL(and even then)22:29
uboxljl: oh, the other person should have just told me to go there22:30
uboxno need to be rude :)22:30
LjLubox: yes22:30
uboxwell thanks for letting me know22:30
LjLubox: but they did give you !best22:30
LjLthey only became a bit rude when you insisted22:30
uboxhaha, yes but i found using a bot to reply to me rude22:31
LjLubox: that's not a good attitude, either22:31
LjLour ubottu here is a useful bot22:31
LjLit saves typing, and you cannot expect volunteers to hurt their fingers just for the sake of it, when they can as well use the bot22:31
LjL!botsnack22:31
ubottuYum! Err, I mean, APT!22:31
uboxsorry, i don't mean to offend. i just prefer talking to people as people instead22:32
LjLas for getting "real" opinions, i assure you that the bot in #ubuntu-bots actually has votes from real people22:32
uboxbut i do have to agree that these rooms do get very busy, so i guess i can understand22:32
uboxi'm not used to irc yet, i've only been around in my own channel for a little while. which has few users so there really aren't any rules22:33
LjLubox: this channel also used to be a lot bigger and busier than it is now. years ago, we wouldn't have had this conversaton in here, i'd have asked you to come to privmsg with me or something22:34
LjLright now, it's so silent it's hardly worth i22:34
uboxyes it does seem very quiet compared to ubuntu, or linux22:36
uboxmaybe everyone is so happy with kubuntu working properly in karmic that they don't need to ask questions22:36
Ev0luti0n_yo folks also looking forward to the launch of the new build of kubuntu?23:12
tzangergood evening23:29
tzangergot the 9.10 beta up and running, very nice...23:29
tzangerwould +1 be the place to ask where to report bgus?23:29
