[09:51] anything on har disc shouldn't affect booting on live cd [09:51] have you get to disc menu? [09:52] it's odd though, i'll try recreate the live cd [09:52] i get to the first menu that usually comes up (i'm able to select appropriate language) is that the one you're referring to? [09:52] hit return return to boot live but then kernel panic after a while [09:53] no, the one where are installin and testing without it etc options [09:54] well, cd can be broken or burning failed [09:55] it's actually off usb flash drive, will wipe it and use usb creater [09:56] all computers can't boot from usb [09:56] that may cause your problem [09:57] one of mines loads the kenel and hangs there [09:57] i'm not sure i'm following, i have booted like this before and it has worked fine [09:58] oh [09:59] no this particular netbook can boot usb, i've done it several times before [09:59] on the same particular flash drive [10:00] hmm, well you can remake te image [10:00] how did you made it bootable, with unetbootin? [10:35] how did you updated, with update manager? [10:35] have you checked sound settings? [10:37] with the updater [10:37] i get an error when clicking on the icon [10:37] what? [10:38] in settings manager i don't have sound icon at all. (only on the bar) [10:38] GStreamer was unable to detect any sound devices. Some sound system specific GStreamer packages may be missing. It may also be a permissions problem. [10:38] this is the error [10:39] when i reboot to kernel 2.6.24-24 the sound is back [10:41] the driver changes or isn't compatible with new kernel maybe [10:41] tried to google for it, but saw only suggestions to run some also installation script. i prefer not to run external installation scripts since the might mess up xubuntu's packages system [10:41] *also=alsa [10:41] any suggestions? [10:43] you think http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8150110 is trustworthy? [10:43] i mean to install AlsaUpgrade-1.0.x-rev-1.17.sh? [10:44] well, noone have said that it won't work [10:44] i'll try. hope it eon't mess up my system [10:46] the script says no alsa found. wtf? the kernel doesn't recognize it? it says it'll download alsa. whatever/ [11:01] hi [11:30] Sysi: the script worked :) [11:30] great :) [14:53] how can I lock the screen? I can't find it on any menu [14:53] boscop, #crtl+alt+escape is the standard keyboard shortcut [14:54] boscop, sry, not escape but del [14:54] boscop, the command is called xflock4 and you can set custom keyboard shortcut for it too [15:10] thanks ochosi [15:41] moving to fresh 9.10 I'd like to reinstall top level packages. Is there any way to extract/find the top level packages only (minimal set) in my current 9.04? [15:44] <]Spectre[> Hi,I'm migrating from ubuntu-gnome tu xubuntu xfce,I'm looking for Place>Connect to server, can you help me ? [15:45] you want to move files? [15:45] <]Spectre[> Sysi, are you talking to me ? [15:45] yup [15:46] <]Spectre[> Sysi,I need to do a connection to a "window share" service [15:46] im kinda new to ubuntu/xubuntu, im more used to pure debian, how can i lock down the tty terminals, every time i type exit im brought back in with them all at an open shell [15:46] when i boot they're all open [15:46] and yes i set passwd [19:18] is 9.10 out yet? [19:20] <_Pete_> no [19:20] rc is [19:20] ah [19:20] Sysi, i am running the ubuntu 9.10 right now [19:21] me too :) [19:21] <_Pete_> I am not going to upgrade anytime soon [19:21] i was thinking of maybe giving the xubuntu a try cause of the compositor [19:21] <_Pete_> and not even reboot, since this 9.04 is extreamly stable [19:21] i have heard its better then the one in ubuntu (meta city) and compiz [19:22] i like xfce more, effects also [19:22] is there effects? [19:22] i thought it was just a window shadow [19:22] i didn't think the compositor really did effects [19:23] well, opacity [19:23] no animations [19:24] yea compiz runs as smooth as butter here [19:24] but [19:24] when i enable it, my firefox browsing maybe gets 10 percent more non smooth [19:24] less smooth [19:24] still perfectly usable though [19:25] the metacity compositor makes it a little bit better, but i have heard xfce has the best compositer there is [19:25] so maybe i could get some shadows etc and full 100 percent firefox speeds [19:26] just a guess anyways [19:26] maybe not [19:27] Sysi, think it would make any difference? hehe === thunderstruck is now known as gnomefreak [20:16] Looking for a working link for the 9.10 rc [20:18] only link working is the amd64 versions [20:19] <_Pete_> p0rkjello: when using Beta version [20:19] <_Pete_> if something doesnt work [20:20] <_Pete_> compile it yourself [20:20] _Pete_: just looking to download the iso. all of the links on http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/9.10/rc/ are broken.. except amd64 which i dont want/need [20:21] <_Pete_> sorry [20:21] <_Pete_> understood you wrongly :) [20:21] _Pete_: i should have been more clear :) [20:21] <_Pete_> never mind [20:22] <_Pete_> but why is all wanting to install beta now? [22:29] Can xubuntu 9.04 read ntfs hard disk? [22:29] !ntfs [22:29] To view your Windows/Mac partitions see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AutomaticallyMountPartitions - For write access, see !NTFS-3g or !FUSE [22:29] ;-) [23:01] am i in xuntu ? [23:01] xubuntu ? [23:01] Bye [23:29] Got a bit of an issue to inquire on. Xubuntu 9.10 at the moment. All is well until today and I get an update for adobe-flash. I go through the motions to update it. It then pauses at DPKG then it seems to bomb out. [23:29] E: /var/cache/apt/archives/adobe-flashplugin_10.0.32.18-1karmic1_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2 [23:30] Uninstalling it and installing it from Adobe.com nop joy either. [23:31] jarmenda, are you familiar with terminal? [23:32] I can certainly get by ... sure [23:32] jarmenda, okay. what does 'sudo apt-get check' in terminal say? [23:33] stand by [23:34] E: The package adobe-flashplugin needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it. [23:34] jarmenda, okay. try doing 'sudo apt-get update' and check after that again [23:34] Alrighty. Stand by. [23:35] Did the check. Same thing. [23:36] okay. just a moment. [23:36] No worries :-) [23:37] jarmenda, hmm. try to uninstall the package (sudo apt-get remove --purge adobe-flashplugin) and install flashplugin-nonfree instead [23:38] Hmmmm. Didn't think of that. Stand by. [23:38] clear [23:39] E: The package adobe-flashplugin needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it. [23:39] Same thing I'm afraid. [23:40] Now I do mouse over the update icon and mentions something about possible unmet dependencies. [23:41] Problem is that what those dependencies are it doesn't say (that I can find).
