gioelehello JontheEchidna: In bug #361149 you said that "Application control their own global shortcuts". Do you mean? From a packaging point of view? Because it seems to me that the default global shortcuts for multimedia keys are unrelated to the applications who uses them. For example both Amarok and Kaffeine use the (default) media key bindings.11:22

nortenghello12:19
JontheEchidnagioele: From an application point of view. For example, juk doesn't use meta + c for the global shortcut for play12:19
nortenga I'm from Brazil12:19
gioeleJontheEchidna: hi12:19
JontheEchidnagioele: Amarok also combines pause and play into one togglable action12:19
JontheEchidnawhile it would be nice if there was standardization, there isn't in this case :(12:19
nortengas I enter the Brazilian channel?12:20
gioeleJontheEchidna: that is ok, but I'm telling is that if you is that there are standard keycodes like XF86MediaPlay that should be the default for the play action in the global kde bindings that exist regardless of the applications that accepts them12:20
lovreim having trouble installing ies4linux, is there an easy way like an archive that only needs to be extracted or something?12:21
nortengtem alguem que pode me ajudar ?12:21
JontheEchidnagioele: it really should be taken up with KDE anyway. More of a chance to get things to happen in a timely manner12:21
JontheEchidna!pt | norteng12:21
ubottunorteng: Por favor, use #ubuntu-br para ajuda em português. Para a comunidade local portuguêsa, #ubuntu-pt. Obrigado.12:21
gioeleJontheEchidna: what do you mean "with KDE". First this is a (K)Ubuntu-specific problem, then upstream KDE might like to change their defaults (that is sensible but not required).12:22
gioeleThe problem right now is that if you install KUbuntu all your multimedia keys do not work in KDE but do work in Gnome applications. Isn't that funny?12:23
JontheEchidnaWe use upstream's defaults for those keybindings12:23
gioeleJontheEchidna: you can diverge from upstream for a while, to keep consistency with the rest of Ubuntu12:23
gioeleJontheEchidna: anyway, do you mind if I switch back that bug to kdebase-workspace instead of Amarok?12:24
JontheEchidnathis bug has nothing to do with kdebase-workspace12:24
gioeleJontheEchidna: kdebase-workspace installs the default keybindings12:25
JontheEchidnawhich amarok does not use12:25
gioeleJontheEchidna: that it (partially) uses. Once I changed the global keybindings, Amarok started working.12:26
JontheEchidnaIt's entirely custom. It just so happens you can change application global keybindings from system settings12:27
gioeleJontheEchidna: what is entirely custom?12:28
JontheEchidnaThe play/pause shortcut12:28
JontheEchidnawell, it uses the kde bindings system,  but there is not standard for such things where several apps use the same global keybindings for a specific action12:29
JontheEchidnaThe action itself is custom-defined: https://launchpad.net/bugs/46087012:29
JontheEchidnaUpstream should change their default binding. 3 days before the release is really too late to do Kubuntu-specific changes like that, and 6 months should be plently to get most KDE apps to use the play multimedia key12:31
gioeleJontheEchidna: what is that bug you just linked?12:31
JontheEchidnathat's an excerpt from the amarok source code, where it defines the play/pause shortcut12:31
JontheEchidnaoh, whoops12:32
JontheEchidnawrong link12:32
JontheEchidnahttp://paste.ubuntu.com/302009/12:32
JontheEchidna;-)12:32
gioeleJontheEchidna: I propose you this: move that bug back to kdebase-workspace as a reminder to change the defaults, then open another about the amarok/other apps behavior. What do you think?12:32
JontheEchidnaWhy involve kdebase-workspace at all?12:33
JontheEchidnait should be just as easy to remember if it's against amarok12:33
JontheEchidnaand then file against other apps that need changing12:34
gioeleJontheEchidna: I see two problems here: 1) KDE default bindings are wrong, 2) Amarok does not use default bindings12:34
JontheEchidnathose are two separate bugs12:34
gioeleJontheEchidna: <gioele> JontheEchidna: I propose you this: move that bug back to kdebase-workspace as a reminder to change the defaults, then open another about the amarok/other apps behavior. What do you think?12:37

gioeleJontheEchidna: I know that feeling ;)12:38
JontheEchidnagioele: I do not believe there is a standard KDE shortcut for pause and play, though12:38
arWinow im using old 7.04 which I booted from cd12:38
gioeleJontheEchidna: yes there is (at least it appears in my global shortcuts dialog)12:39

JontheEchidnaone for all apps?12:39
arWiI just dont want to install 7.04 and then upgrade the whole thing. And I dont know if I could burn a bootable cd while on livecd.. ;/12:39
jussi01arWi: when you say "your system wont boot" cant you tell me exactly what happens?12:42
arWijussi01: something about trying to access block (or something) outsite partition. And sometimes it says something about bad crc. after this it will return to grub. i12:43
arWiJussi01: and I did try the recovery mode12:44
jussi01arWi: try following the lost grub after windows instructions as told by the bot12:44

ubottuGRUB is the default Ubuntu boot manager. Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - GRUB how-tos: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto12:44
jussi01Im off now, laters.12:44
arWijussi01: perhaps I should try with some kernel boot parameters which could provide some debug info?12:44
ArkoldThosxddd12:45
arWijussi01: Ill try. tnx.12:45
JontheEchidnagioele: Yeah, there's no place I can see where you can set one keybinding that will work with all applications. In the Global Keyboard Shortcuts section of the Keyboard and Mouse module you can change default global keybindings per application12:46
JontheEchidnabut I can't see any standard KDE play shortcut12:46
JontheEchidnakaffeine doesn't even have a global binding by default12:46
JontheEchidnajuk uses crtl+alt+p12:47
JontheEchidnaand then amarok uses metza + c12:47
JontheEchidna*meta12:47
gioeleJontheEchidna: you are right: in the Global keyboard shortcut you select independent components. So these shortcuts are not really global.12:55
JontheEchidnagioele: they are global in that they work even when the app does not have focus12:55
gioeleSo the really important point is to make them _standard_ keyboard shortcuts and to set them to the default XF86Media* keycodes (at least on Linux)12:56
JontheEchidnayeah12:56
gioeleJontheEchidna: can you raise these points to the kde-devel mailing list?12:58
JontheEchidnaeek :P12:58
JontheEchidnaI know somebody who tried to do this in the past. I think I'll consult him12:58
JontheEchidnawell, he tried to do similar shortcut unification12:59
gioeleJontheEchidna: I remember something on XDG in 2003, but I think it has not been expanded to the then-standardized Media keys13:01
JontheEchidnaeh... XDG is sadly mostly dead these days :(13:01

The partition used disk space for ext4 is 6.6 Gib! while with reiserfs it's a few hundreds MiB. Is that normal?18:17

jjessiegreetings, I'm running netbook-remix and since my last dist-upgrade I can't get the desktop to load completely, the splash screen shows and when it gets to the desktop icon it goes black and dumps me back into kdm.. I've done another dist-upgrade thinking it might help but it hasn't.. what can i do to fix outside of reinstall? thx in advance23:04
jjessiekubuntu-netbook-remix to be specific :)23:05
Fanfarejjessie: iirc u can select another session in kdm...23:06
jjessieFanfare: yes, my other choice is failsafe which also dumps me back to the login.. I've tried moving .kde to .kde_bak to let kde make new conf files but that doesn't seem to help23:07
jjessieI really don't want to re-install I've finally got things the way I want them.. if I could just figure out how to get kde running again I'd be golden23:08
Fanfarejjessie: hm, the diff between netbook and regular is plasma-netbook insted of plasma-desktop...23:08
jjessieyes afaik23:08
Fanfarejjessie: i think reinstalling all plasma things... but just a guess...23:10
kb9vqf_!kde3 is Kubuntu 8.04 ships with KDE3 and full support. === ubuntu is now known as Roey
Roeyhi all23:14
Roeyquestion...23:14
RoeyI *really* need help here and it's not that complicated I don't think..23:14
RoeyI have md0, md1, md2 and md323:15
Roeythese are mapped to /dev/sd{a,b}1, /dev/sd{a,b}2, /dev/sd{a,b}3 and /dev/sd{a,b}4, rspectively23:15
RoeyI have an old ubuntu install on /dev/md0 (that is, /dev/sda{a,b}1) that the system keeps trying to boot to23:16
Roeyeven though I completely wiped it out with mkfs.ext4 /dev/md023:16
RoeyI tried installing grub on /dev/md1 (that is, /dev/sd{a,b}223:16
Roeybut the thing keeps trying to boot with /boot on /dev/md0 (that is, /dev/sd{a,b}1)23:16
Roeyhow do I RMOVE grub off of /dev/md0 ??23:17
kb9vqf_Roey: How did you reinstall Grub?23:20
kb9vqf_Roey: You will need to run setup(sdx) for EVERY drive in your system,23:20
Roeygrub>boot /dev/sda223:20
Roeyhrm23:20
RoeyI only have two drives in this softraid1 array btw23:20

Roeyer, sda2 and sdb223:21
Roeyand how do I remove it from sda1 and sdb1?23:21
kb9vqf_Roey: I don't think you can23:21
kb9vqf_Roey: GRUB really "23:21
kb9vqf_Roey: GRUB really "wants" to be installed on the MBR23:21
Roeyso how will it know to boot off of /dev/sda2 and not /dv/sda1 if grub's on both of them?23:21
Roeyah23:21

Roeyroot is on /dev/sda323:21
FloodBotK1Roey: Please don't flood, use http://paste.ubuntu.com to paste, don't use Enter as punctuation.23:21
Roeythe problem is that /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb2 are tiny...  about 100 megs23:22
kb9vqf_Roey: Right, that's why you run setup() for each and every drive23:22
Roeywhy do you write setup()23:22
Roey?23:22
Roeyis this th syntax?23:22
kb9vqf_Yes: from the Grub command line, you run root(md0) , then setup(sdx) for each and every drive.  Each time you run setup(), Grub is installed to that drive or partition.23:23
kb9vqf_If you install Grub to the MBR, the old Grub files sitting in the partitions will be ignored23:23
=== yofel_ is now known as yofel__

Roeyso lemme get this straight:23:24
kb9vqf_Your BIOS may select a drive almost randomly to boot from (I have a BIOS that does that as well); this is why Grub must be installed on every drive's MBR23:24
Roeyhow do I write it to th MBR then?23:24
kb9vqf_using setup(sdx) instead of setup(sdx1)23:24
kb9vqf_Where sdx is sda, or sdb, etc23:24

RoeyI'm running now from a livecd btw23:25
kb9vqf_Yup--but first you have to run root(hdn,m), where n and m are the drive number and partition of your boot files, respectively23:26
kb9vqf_To find that data, go to the Grub command line and type find /grub/stage123:26
kb9vqf_It will spit out a list of hard drives and partition numbers where the boot files are located23:26

RoeySo I'm on a liveCD currently--my system gives me "error 15" from Grub when I try to boot it without it.23:28
kb9vqf_Right; that means that the root() command was wrong23:29
Roeykb9vqf_: can I set root to an md device?23:29

kb9vqf_Yes, but only if it is a mirroring array23:29
Roey(yes I know the syntax is diffrent)23:29
Roeyah23:29
Roeyys it is.23:29
kb9vqf_Then the find command should pick up _something_23:30

Roeywiping out /boot23:31
ByronOld drive is all on one partition. The new drive split '/' and '/home'23:31
