=== moe is now known as Guest94132
Guest94132hi00:01
Guest94132so I have been having fun with karmic koala today00:02
BUGabundoGuest94132: please try #ubuntu00:02
BUGabundothis # is for bug triaging00:02
BUGabundothanks00:02
Guest94132ok00:02
Guest94132sorry00:02
Guest94132may I note a bug that I found?00:03
MsMacosure00:03
Guest94132udev removed a program called vol_id as of late, with blkid as replacement00:04
Guest94132blkid is part of util-linux-ng00:04
Guest94132now, I have to detect filesystems on external harddrives00:05
Guest94132they are usually ufs, of zfs00:05
Guest94132blkid is capable to detect these on Archlinux00:05
Guest94132however, koala's blkid is not00:05
Guest94132for some reason00:05
MsMacocan you file a bug on util-linux-ng? "ubuntu-bug -p util-linux-ng"00:07
MsMacoit may be a compile option, or it may be a different version number00:08
MsMacodo you know the version # for util-linux-ng in arch?00:08
BUGabundoMsMaco: no need for -p00:08
BUGabundothat's apport-cli00:09
Guest94132yeah00:09
Guest94132arch is 1.1600:09
Guest94132i mean00:09
Guest941322.1600:09
micahgBUGabundo: it was originally in there but deprecated AFAIK00:09
MsMacoBUGabundo: doh. ok thanks for the reminder00:10
Guest94132the -p is circumventing the cache, I think00:10
Guest94132in /etc/blkid.tab00:10
MsMacolibblkid100:11
MsMaco?00:11
MsMaco2.16 here too00:11
Guest94132yeah00:11
MsMacoeither arch has a patch, or its a compile option00:11
Guest941322.16.100:11
Guest94132mmh00:11
BUGabundo!info libblkid00:11
ubot4BUGabundo: Package libblkid does not exist in karmic00:11
MsMacothere's a 1 at the end00:11
Guest94132so what I did was I pulled the current git version00:11
BUGabundo!info libblkid100:12
ubot4BUGabundo: libblkid1 (source: util-linux): block device id library. In component main, is required. Version 2.16-1ubuntu5 (karmic), package size 85 kB, installed size 192 kB00:12
MsMaco!info libblkid100:12
ubot4MsMaco: libblkid1 (source: util-linux): block device id library. In component main, is required. Version 2.16-1ubuntu5 (karmic), package size 85 kB, installed size 192 kB00:12
Guest94132yup00:12
Guest941322.16.100:12
Guest94132that is the ubuntu version00:12
Guest941322.16 is the Arch version00:12
Guest94132I think the problem goes deeper though00:12
Guest94132so on debian stable00:12
Guest94132the filesystems are also detected00:13
Guest94132that is udev 125 or something00:13
MsMacoits 2.16-1, not .1. and yes, they mean different things00:15
Guest94132oh - ok00:15
Guest94132I guess I thought ubuntu was using testing00:16
Guest94132debian testing, that is00:16
Guest94132anyways00:16
Guest94132debian testing has the exact same problem as koala00:16
Guest94132whereas stable and Archlinux dont00:16
Guest94132I am not sure where to look first00:17
Guest94132so again, I pulled the git snapshot from kernel.org00:17
Guest94132compiled00:17
Guest94132and it seems that the version does not make a difference00:17
Guest94132so I believe it has to do with udev settings or something similar00:18
Guest94132if that makes sense at all00:18
Guest94132oh, I didnt mention00:18
Guest94132ext4/3 and a swap partition are recognized00:18
Guest94132by blkid00:19
Guest94132I checked the Ubuntu kernel config00:19
Guest94132and it should be able to recognize solaris x86 ufs partitions00:19
MsMacoubuntu is based off sid/unstable, not testing00:19
Guest94132ok00:20
Guest94132but the udev version is of course higher than that of debian stable00:20
Guest94132actually, atm I am just wondering if anyone can confirm this00:21
MsMacoi dont have anything with those filesystems00:22
Guest94132mmh00:22
MsMacofile a bug, and...if you're not on identi.ca, i can send a message to the ubuntu group asking for a confirmer00:22
Guest94132ok, thanks a lot! I am not on identi.ca  - what is that?00:23
MsMacoits an open source microblogging platform.... or "open source twitter"00:24
Guest94132ah :)00:24
MsMacothere are groups so you can say "hey, !ubuntu users...anyone have issues with zfs/ufs?" and everyone in the ubuntu group (instead of just your followers) will see it00:24
Guest94132cool :) Thanks a lot00:25
Guest94132gonna file a bug report00:25
BUGabundothink of groups as mailinglist00:25
BUGabundobut you need to join a group00:26
BUGabundoto be able to send a notice to it00:26
MsMaco......that's how mailing lists work to00:30
MsMaco*too00:30
Guest94132:) seems like a nice idea00:36
BUGabundoI like it00:37
BUGabundoI luv it00:37

syn-ackok so who's the channel manager of ubuntu+1? I'd like to know when the channels going to reopened since I plan on testing the toolchain06:30
lifelessif you're doing testing/development, ubuntu-devel is for you06:31
syn-ackin there already. :P06:31
MsMacoi dont think it opens til alpha 1...06:34
syn-ackMsMaco, alright... good to know06:35
mac_vsyn-ack: its invite-only until alpha1 , after which the channel is open06:45
syn-ackmac_v, who would I need to contact about getting an invite?06:46
mac_vsyn-ack: maybe try asking in the -ops? or Pici might know more about it06:46
syn-ackgood deal. I'll lurk till I see him active.06:47
syn-ackThanks for the info06:47

MsMacook i really wish irssi could notice highlights that arent at the beginning of the line06:51
jussi01syn-ack: thats me. and yeah, alpha 1 is usually it.06:51
syn-ackjussi01, ah06:52
syn-ackjussi01, so just report bugs in the toolchain to here and online then?06:53
jussi01syn-ack: yeah, use LP is probably best06:53
syn-ackGood deal06:53
mac_vsyn-ack: reporting bugs in u+1 is never the way to go , u+1 is just a support channel where folks hang out ,LP is always the better place06:54

dtchen2just as a heads-up, I've been seeing a *lot* of bugs filed against alsa-driver that are caused by a dist-upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 failing to properly update the appropriate grub conffile16:44
dtchen2so, people are reporting that their sound doesn't work, when in fact it's caused by PulseAudio's module-udev-detect bailing due to Jaunty's kernel being used with Karmic's udev16:45
dtchen2In every instance, asking the reporter to update the grub conffile manually and to reboot into Karmic's kernel has resolved the issue16:46
bdmurraydtchen2: thanks, do you have an example?16:47
dtchen2bdmurray, pick just about any bug filed against alsa-driver in the past day where no sound was reported16:47
dtchen2In all the relevant cases, I've pointed out the kernel version at fault.16:48
dtchen2I suspect there will be an increase in this symptom being reported, but I don't have cycles this week to troubleshoot where in the update/grub the conffile isn't being added/chosen on boot.16:49
dtchen2anyhow, back to work16:51
dtchen2/quit16:51
MsMacobdmurray: do you know if the grub-not-updating thing happens on every jaunty -> karmic upgrade?16:54
bdmurrayMsMaco: This is the first I've heard of it.16:56
MsMacooh!16:56
MsMacoit seems like maybe update-grub isnt run in kernel postinst16:57
MsMacobut if you use grub2 its fine. just grub1 is broken16:57
bdmurrayMsMaco: So I could recreate this by installing Jaunty w/ grub and upgrading to Karmic?16:58
MsMacoive heard it reported by a ton of people, but i dont know if *every* upgrader hits it16:58
MsMacoim about to check my upgraded system16:59
MsMaco2.6.31 is in my grub menu, but i need to check "history" and see if i did it manually :P16:59
MsMacook no, it doesnt hit everybody :-/17:01
MsMacofound out this was happening when lfaraone thought -10 was the current kernel a week ago17:02
bdmurrayCould you elaborate?17:03
MsMacohow so?17:04
bdmurrayI've no idea what lfaraone though17:04
bdmurrayt17:05
MsMacooh17:05
MsMacohe was helping someone in #ubuntu+1 and said the current kernel was 2.6.31-10 when 2.6.31-14 was17:05
MsMacogrub hadnt updated in months17:05
JanCbut kernel was installed?17:06
MsMacohttp://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/44769617:06
bdmurrayand this isn't the apt daily cronjob not running bug?17:06
ubot4Launchpad bug 447696 in linux "grub.cfg not getting updated" [Undecided,New]17:06
MsMacoyes, kernel was installed17:06
MsMacoi told someone in #kubuntu yesterday to run "update-grub" because they were still booting into jaunty's kernel17:07
MsMacothey had karmic's kernel but grub was never made aware of it17:08
MsMacowait no didnt read far enough into that bug report...17:08
JanChm, maybe people who installed both grub & grub2 before upgrade?17:09
MsMaco*shrug*17:10
JanCfrom that bug, seems like he had grub2 installed before17:13
MsMacook launchpad is being broken17:13
MsMacoit keeps showing me the "login/register" link. i click it, and it says im already logged in. i refresh, and it shows "login/register" again. grrr17:14
MsMacough! so many bugs of grub screwing up on the jaunty-->karmic upgrade...and all slightly different!17:19
hggdhyes, LP seems to be slightly broken...17:37
hggdhoh. If I go to bugs.lp.net (as in the bug MsMaco posted), I get Login/Register. If I change the URL to bugs.EDGE.lp.net, I am logged in17:39

jsalisburyI think I may have hit a bug in rsyslog - running Karmic.  However, ubuntu-bug rsyslog says that it is not a genuine ubuntu package.  Are rsyslog bugs not reported against ubuntu?20:56
bdmurrayjsalisbury: what version of rsyslog do you have installed?20:58
jsalisburyThe default that comes with karmic GA.  I'll get the exact version - one second.20:59
hggdhcurrent is 4.2.0-2ubuntu520:59
jsalisburybdmurray: yes, that is what dpkg reports as well.20:59
bdmurraythat's weird it works for me21:00
hggdhWFM also21:00
bdmurrayjsalisbury: what command did you use for dpkg?21:01
jsalisburybdmurray:  dpkg -l rsyslog21:03
jsalisburybdmurray:  This is my output: http://pastebin.com/m3e19fe9b21:03
bdmurrayjsalisbury: what kind of system / install is that from?21:04
hggdhalso it seems to be a server21:04
jsalisburyhggdh: yes: http://pastebin.com/d24cd4c4221:05
jsalisburybdmurray: This is the 32bit Server version.21:06
jsalisburybdmurray: running on a Dell 295021:06
bdmurrayjsalisbury: that's strange I have a 32 bit server install and don't receive that at all21:07
hggdhand I tried on a 64b VM server I have, also do not see it21:08
hggdhweirder and weirder :-)21:08
jsalisburybdmurray:  Hmm, yes strange.  I'll try to track it down further and see what is triggering it.21:09
bdmurrayjsalisbury: I'll poke at the apport code in a bit to see what is up too21:09
jsalisburybdmurray:  Thanks for the help.21:10
jsalisburybdmurray:  The original issue I was trying to report is that rsyslog won't start listening on any ports  when I configure it to receive logs from remote clients.21:11
jsalisburybdmurray:  Even stranger.  I have an identical system running the same version, and it does not hit the issue.  The one difference is one server is a UEC cloud controller, and one is a Node.  The Cloud Controller is the one that has the issue.21:14
jsalisburybdmurray:  really strange.  On that same system ubuntu-bug aptitude also fails, but ubuntu-bug python passes - meaning I can report a bug against it.    I'll see if I can figure it out.  Anyway it seems specific to this one system.21:19
bdmurrayjsalisbury: is there anything special in your sources.list file?21:21
jsalisburybdmurray:  I added entries for karmic-proposed21:21
jsalisburybdmurray:  let me look at that file.  maybe I added a typo.  I can try my backup copy quickly.21:23
jsalisburybdmurray:  ha, that fixed it :-)  Let me look at my edits closer.  I must have added a typo.  Thanks for the help!21:24
bdmurrayjsalisbury: really?  that was rather unexpected21:25
jsalisburybdmurray:  Yeah, I made the same edits on the other machine that didn't have the issue, so I'll do a diff.21:26
jsalisburybdmurray: I reproduced it.  It seem the problem was caused by having someones PPA in the sources.lost file.  I had an error getting the Public Key for the PPA, so the apt-get update failed.  This makes ubuntu-bug fail for some packages.21:37
jsalisburys/sources.lost/source.list/21:37
bdmurrayjsalisbury: that seems worth reporting about apport21:38
jsalisburybdmurray:  acutally ubuntu-bug still fails if I comment out the PPA's and re-run a successful apt-get update.  I actually have to remove the entries.21:39
bdmurrayjsalisbury: that definitely seems wrong21:39
jsalisburybdmurray:  I'll report it against apport.21:40
jsalisburybdmurray:  Thanks again for the help.21:40
jsalisburybdmurray:  Ok, I don't think its actually a bug.  I had the karmic main repository commented out from a previous test.  The ubuntu-bug failure will only happen when karmic main is commented out, which seems to be expected.21:49
