deusr_ I upgraded from Kubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 and now it is showing the icon stating new updates???00:15
deusr_fela:00:16
felawell u can install the updates00:16
felasometimes updates depend on other updates so you have to install the first updates first - ie upgrade to karmic and then install karmic's updates00:16
deusr_fela: in version 9.04, appeared an icon on the tarefaz saying about new updates, now is not appearing in version 9.1000:18
felathat's strange, well are you sure there are updates available?00:18
deusr_I'm already with kubuntu 9.1000:18
deusr_yes, he had, but I updated via terminal00:19
felawell i guess you could just usee that for the time being00:19
felait's probably a bug of some sort00:20

EmberIvySo~02:20
EmberIvyI can't connect to the internet :O02:20
* EmberIvy is on another computer atm02:20
d9500stevo_: i've seen the same thing before on a minimal ubuntu install (command lie only) that i did. i never did fix it, but i'm guessing the problem had to do with missing files, as indicated by "no such file or directory." sudo aptitude install alsa-base alsa-utils to make sure you have the needed files, perhaps?02:20
trampelstevo_: you might try restarting udev, rebooting, and/or running the snddevices script in alsa-driver02:21
trampelEmberIvy: i think anyone that could possibly address your problem would need a few more specifics.   for instance, you used to be able to connect to the internet, and then.... what was done?02:22
stevo_how?02:22
EmberIvyThen I installed kubuntu lol02:23
stevo_how do i get to my alsa-driver02:23
EmberIvyI was running on vista osx02:23
trampelEmberIvy: you were at kubuntu version? and upgraded to kubuntu version ?02:23
EmberIvyUhhh no...? I was on vista osx and then wiped everything out to install kubuntu...02:24
trampelEmberIvy: do you connect via wireless?02:24
EmberIvyYeah02:24
EmberIvyIm currently on the desktop with the wireless router02:24
EmberIvyBut kubuntu is on the laptop I'm trying to connect with02:25
trampelEmberIvy: ok, this is the tricky bit... what brand of wireless card?02:25
EmberIvyEeeh the card!? Not the router?02:25
EmberIvyUmmm I think it's Atheros, but I'm not sure how to actually look for it in kubuntu yet lol, I'm just going by the stickers on the laptop02:26
trampelEmberIvy: the router is working ok with your second computer that you're typing to us now, yes?02:26
EmberIvyYeah02:26
trampelEmberIvy: so we may presume that it's the wireless connection in the computer that's not connecting that's the problem, perhaps?02:27
EmberIvyUm...yeah? It's not the wifi....02:28
EmberIvyCause when the wifi doesn't work, the internet on the desktop doesnt work either02:28
trampeloh dear...02:28
EmberIvySo it SHOULD be working02:29
stevo_hey, i need sound, and my alsamixer gives me this: alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory02:29
trampelyou're trying to get a computer to connect via wireless that has never connected wirelessly using kubuntu before, yes?02:30
EmberIvycorrect.02:30
EmberIvyIt connected fine on vista and vista osx though, but vista is evil so that doesnt really matter02:31
trampeland microsoft/vista has every hardware driver on earth designing specifically for it... that's why maybe we need to know the maker of your wireless card in order to help02:32
EmberIvyIs Atheros a wireless card maker?02:33
EmberIvyIf so, thats it.02:33
trampelfor instance, if it's a broadcom chipset that requires some special consideration sometimes02:33
trampelatheros is generally "good" yes02:33
EmberIvyOkay02:33
EmberIvythen thats it.02:33
SJrEver since upgrading to Karmic, my Suspend to Disk is very broken, when I resume it takes for ever, and the console display is corrupt. After fully resuming, and waiting about 5 minutes, I Can get access to a HEAVILY corrupted console, and then at this point can restart kdm, and get a working X session, however the console remains corrupted.02:34
trampelcould you report what running this command returns in a terminal window:  lspci | grep -i atheros02:35
SJrEven if I type reset in the console it's still corrupted, and it's all my consoles.02:35
SJrIf that was for me trampel, it's nothing02:35
EmberIvysure trampel, if I could find terminal window.....02:35
SJrI guess it wasn't02:36
trampelSJr: sorry that should've been prefixed with EmberIvy02:36
EmberIvytrampel, where is the command thingy?02:36
EmberIvyI can't find it02:36

trampelEmberIvy: ok (and i should've done this first probably) do you see a little plug/socket icon somewhere (maybe to the right) of your taskbar?  (i hate that new icon by-the-bye)02:43

trampelyeah... click it and is the wireless enabled?02:44
EmberIvyYup.02:44
csc``Im attempting to install the Kubuntu netbook edition from a 2 gigabyte USB flashdrive, the boot fails with no graphical indication, upon further troubleshooting it seems to be caused by /dev/loop1 not being mounted to /cow02:44

trampelEmberIvy:  just to be sure you're doing these tests on the machine that cannot connect, yes?02:44
EmberIvyYes...The other one is running on Vista lol02:45
trampelEmberIvy: another basic question, how do you know your not connecting?  can't get the browser to get to google, for example?02:46
EmberIvyYes...02:46
trampelEmberIvy: ok.... what does this command return in that terminal window:   ping -c 2 192.168.1.102:47
trampelEmberIvy: that is, do you see "0% packet loss" or something else?02:48
EmberIvyA whole bunch of something else02:48
trampelEmberIvy: how much "packet loss"?  100% ?02:49
trampel(i'm not getting paid quite enough here....)02:49
EmberIvyIt's not there. at all theres nothing on packet loss.02:50
EmberIvyOkay you know what? Im just going to go figure this out with someone who isn't going to be a pain in the ass02:50

r00t_ninjaThe "Hardware Drivers" package in Kubuntu (jockey-kde) requires a local package cache to function properly. Immediately after a new installation, this might not exist. If running jockey-kde after installing Kubuntu, first ensure there is a local package cache by running KPackageKit (K-Menu -> System Settings -> Add and Remove Software) and clicking on software updates or in a Konsole shell doing "sudo apt-get update" before08:52

JediMasterok, more important question, I've upgraded from debian to ubuntu 5.04 and upwards from there, then install kubuntu-desktop today, at some point I've had some odd problems with the fonts on the gdm login, but now the same problem is everywhere on kde, the fonts are TINY, yet the font sizes are the same as other installs I have (8pt)14:55
BluesKajJediMaster, do you have access to your router14:56
JediMasterthey're too small to read on a 37" TV14:56
BluesKaj?14:56

tdnshadeslayer, but which command should I run to lock the screen?14:58

JediMasterBluesKaj, for what IP? the problem is that eth0 (or any other interface) isn't showing up in the network manager so I can't assign it a static ip15:00
tdnshadeslayer, yes. In Kubuntu 9.04, I could run /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/krunner_lock.15:00
