likemindeadDid you try it via the Live CD first?01:25
likemindeadCan you drop to a CLI & run updates?01:26
sanubuntulikeminded, yes it had standard background in live .. i installed ubuntu studio desktop after installation, now that i remember, and after that no image01:27

sanubuntuarrrrgggghhhhhhh01:33
likemindead"sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" (minus the quotes).01:34
sanubuntulikemindead, k i did that prolly have to restart to see if it took .. b4 i do that, can you tell me what might be wrong with my flash?  i installed from synaptic, and its showing as installed, but can't get any video01:39

XubuntusI have looked at the driver Freewillie pointed me to. It seems like a good idea if nothing else works, BUT. I wonder, WHY does sound work perfect on Ubuntu 9.10 and not on Xubuntu 9.10?17:31
FreewillieDifrence in driver model?17:32
XubuntusI even checked which driver Ubuntu used, and it's not the one Xubuntu tries with. Can it be that Xubuntu is made for people not needing sound?17:32
FreewillieI know it works that way i had it myself17:32
FreewillieNOO17:32
Freewillienormaly xubuntu just recognizes the sound chip17:33
Tesssasound here works perfectly in xubuntu17:33
XubuntusIsn't the two distro's actually the same, just a different windows manager and some other programs?17:33
XubuntusDo the come with DIFFERENT drivers?!17:33
FreewillieI surely don't know but i am awae of the sound problems17:34
FreewillieI had it with a pentium 4 motherboar17:34
XubuntusDoes Xubuntu handle audio differently then Ubuntu? (Refering to what you wrote, Freewillie, about recognizing the sound chip.17:35
FreewillieI ve solved it but it wasn't easy17:35
Xubuntus=17:35
Xubuntus)17:35
FreewillieI think, but i am not sure17:35
FreewillieI hate sound myself, it doesn 'tmather wich os.17:35
XubuntusI've heard/read that you can convert your Ubuntu to Xubuntu, and vice verse. In that case the audio shouldn't change.17:36
XubuntusOh? Sound issues, you mean?17:36
Freewilliei dont know but it can because you install or uninstall more than just the window manager17:36
FreewillieWhy else uses ubunutu more diskspace then xubuntu17:37
XubuntusI would like to know how it works a little better. I mean, to be able to identify what is different and change exactly that.17:37
XubuntusWell, a lot of different programs. But DRIVERS?!17:37
FreewillieI would like to know it to but i am afraid i cannot help you because i dont know it myself17:37
XubuntusOk17:37
XubuntusSo, how do I compile the driver in Xubuntu? And then install it?17:38
XubuntusOh, first!!!17:38
Freewilliehave you download it already?17:38
XubuntusCan I search for the driver/card that I saw UbuntuLiveCD, in Xubuntu somehow?17:39
FreewillieI don't know, but why would you like to use xubuntu instead of ubuntu?17:40
XubuntusF.ex. I saw, using UbuntuLiveCD, the card "VT1708 [Azalia HDAC] (High Definition)...".17:40
XubuntusBecause it is faster?17:40
XubuntusAs far as people here told me.17:41
XubuntusAnd you?17:41
Xubuntus:)17:41
FreewillieI like to use xubuntu because of xfce and the speed and the easy way to mod it's login screen and themes17:41
FreewillieBut ubuntu does just fine for me too17:42
subspiderhi17:42

XubuntusFreewillie, No, I haven't downloaded it yet. I have to boot into Xubuntu first. But, will there be any "lost stuff" on the way?17:49
XubuntusLike the current drivers staying on in the background and so forth?17:50
Freewilliewhat do you mean with: lost stuff?17:50
Freewillieoh ok17:50
XubuntusBtw. Anyone with a system monitor-problem, showing one of the (dual) processorns at 100% all the time and the other normal?17:50

XubuntusHi, people.20:36
XubuntusAnyone care to help with managing some drivers?20:36
Xubuntus:)20:37
likemindead!ask | Xubuntus20:38
ubottuXubuntus: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)20:38
XubuntusWell, that kind of is the question. How do I manage drivers in Xubuntu? Right now, I'm interesting in sound-drivers.20:40
XubuntusWhere are the drivers located? Is it as easy as just checking Synaptic?20:46
likemindeadYes, Xubuntus, you can check Synaptic for the drivers installed/available.20:51
likemindeadYou can also track down drivers and compile from source if necessary.20:51
XubuntusIs there any other general list for the drivers?20:57
wrgbXubuntus: check in Applications > System > Hardware Drivers for any third party drivers being used or available for your machine21:06
wrgbXubuntus: you can also click on the volume control and check the sound card drop down to see what sound card your system detected21:09
XubuntusYeah, I got three in the list, but two in reality. And out of those in the list only one is a existing one, but not the one I want to use.21:12
XubuntusI just downloaded some drivers from Realtek. I hope it's okay to follow the instructions in the Readme.txt for Xubuntu. (The instructions seems to be for Ubuntu, but no version is mentioned.)21:13
wrgbXubuntus: installing them should be the same for Xubuntu, after you install them, select the sound card from the dropdown list and configure the controls21:15
XubuntusDo I need to uninstall anything first?21:21
wrgbXubuntus: You may need to uninstall the existing driver, but I'm not sure how to do that, sorry21:24
wrgbXubuntus: but since it's not recongnising the one you want to use, there shouldn't be any problem21:25
XubuntusThe instructions now say: "Turn on sound support from kernel config". Can I suppose this is already done?21:26
XubuntusAlso:   "(soundcore module, default turn on)".21:27
wrgbXubuntus: restart your pc and check the dropdown in the mixer for the sound card you just installed21:30
XubuntusThe step above is step TWO of many. Hence, I have not yet finished installing.21:37
XubuntusI did however run into another problem further on.21:38
XubuntusIt asks me to run "alsaconf", which doesn't work.21:39
wrgbXubuntus: try sudo alsaconf21:40
Xubuntusdid21:41
XubuntusSame result.21:42
Xubuntus"command not found"21:42
XubuntusAny ideas?21:44
wrgbXubuntus: sorry, had to step out for a moment - I'm that's about all I know about sound in (X)ubuntu - I've never had a sound card problem, really they just came up and worked21:52
wrgbXubuntus: try asking the question on the channel again and maybe there's someone with  more experience21:53
wrgbXubuntus: be specific about the Realtek model number of the card you're using21:54
XubuntusWhile installing the realtek-drivers, for the onboard sound card Realtek ALC883 (VT1708), I can't get alsaconf to run; "command not found". Help me, someone!21:59
XubuntusRebooting... We'll see if this ends up working. :)22:12
wrgbXubuntus: If it doesn't, you might also try the Xubuntu users mailing list at : https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/xubuntu-users22:15

likemindeadIt's Albatross, I believe.22:28
crash2kthank you :)22:29
crash2kwhats the name of the default border? lol22:34
XubuntusI'm starting to dislike this distribution very much. Got sound but extreeeemly low.22:34
XubuntusWhy can't things work?! It's the year 2009. These problems shouldn't be here...22:35
likemindeadComplaining should help. :-\22:36

XubuntusHow come there are no easy-to-follow manuals on such a simple thing as installing drivers?22:37
crash2kwhat kind of driver?22:38
likemindeadBecause you really _need_ to install drivers in Linux.22:38
likemindeadfacepalm.jpg22:38
XubuntusALL drivers.22:38
crash2kexcuse me likeminedead do you know what the default metacity theme in xubuntu is?22:38
XubuntusThey are ONE category. No need for more then ONE way.22:38
Xubuntuslikemindead, What? "Because I really _need_ "? I don't understand.22:39
XubuntusIs ANYONE of you using snd-hda-intel?22:40
XubuntusI downloaded the drivers from Realtek's site. Installed following their instructions. But not all was possible, strangly enough. :/  alsaconf doesn't exist and the instructions tell me to run it.22:42
crash2kugh22:42
XubuntusAnd why do I have THREE soundcards in the mixer, but in reality only two in my computer?22:42
Xubuntusugh? Not a good idea to follow those instructions, huh?22:43
XubuntusOr do you mean alsaconf?22:43
XubuntusCan I somehow copy the audio-configuration AND drivers from a running UbuntuLiveCD to my installed Xubuntu?22:45
schizoTKHello xubuntu gurus!22:46
schizoTKMany thanks for this fine OS22:46
XubuntusIsn't it strange that BOTH the ALSA and the OSS volume control is synchronized and work at the same time?! I mute one, the other mutes - and vice versa.22:47
XubuntusschizoTK, fine? You've got sound working then?22:48
Xubuntus:)22:48
schizoTKHaving an issue installing another separate full xubuntu alongside winXP/winNT/xubuntu22:48
schizoTKOh Yeah! Sound! Streaming! 3G! Oh Yeah!22:49
schizoTKUsing 9.0422:49
schizoTKtried the upgrade, but had problems22:49
schizoTKI'm on an Acer Aspire One ZG522:50
schizoTK1GB RAM 160GBhdd22:50
XubuntusOk.22:51
XubuntusWhat sound card have you got in the mixer?22:51
schizoTKQualcomm 9121 3g modem is not working, but cell phone tethering works22:51
hoeqAnyone who knows how to make terminals _really_ transparent in xubuntu?22:52
schizoTKmixer shows both HDA Intel ALSA22:52
hoeqNow I can see my wallpaper through them, but not the windows behind.22:52
schizoTKand Realtek ALC268 (OSS Mixer)22:53
schizoTKIn terminal select menu option Edit then scroll to preferences22:54
schizoTKBeen trying to install a 2nd xubuntu alonside everything else for testing purposes22:55
hoeqschizoTK: that's not what I meant, the terminal is transparent (via the setting you mentioned) but not entirely.22:55
hoeqI can see the desktop behind it, but if I put another window behind a terminal, that will not be visible at all.22:55
hoeqPlus the wallpaper lags a bit while I move the terminal windows around.22:55
schizoTKMaybe too much for your video hardware?22:56
hoeqIt worked fine before I reinstalled xubuntu.22:56
XubuntusWhich of the two cards is the one working for you?22:56
schizoTKWhich version of xubuntu?22:57
hoeqschizoTK: 9.1022:57
schizoTK@ Xubuntus ... Both!22:57
schizoTKI had problems when I upgraded to 9.1022:57
schizoTKHad to re-install 9.04 to get everything working again22:58
schizoTKBut it works GREAT!22:58
hoeqAbout the transparency thing, it works on my laptop, also xubuntu 9.1022:59
hoeqAnd I also had 9.10 on this computer prior to re-installation22:59
schizoTKSo you have compositing enabled @ hoeq?22:59
hoeqSry, you lost me there : >23:00
hoeqWhere can I find it?23:00
schizoTKWindow Manager Tweaks under the Applications menu23:00
XubuntusI don't get it. I installed the Realtek Alsa drivers and all of a sudden one completely wrong card turned into a OSS card! What's happening?!23:01
XubuntusBtw. Is this the official IRC-channel for Xubuntu?23:01
schizoTKI don't know @ Xubuntus23:01
schizoTKMaybe all the uberxunterkind are busy?23:02
hoeqschizoTK: that doesn't change anything, other than the custom settings under the "Compositor" tab.23:02
hoeqLike making the window decorations transparent, for example.23:02
hoeqOr wait, when I enabled compositing, I can't make the terminals transparent at all anymore. :S23:03
XubuntusOkay. Now this is even MORE weird. The ONLY channel (in the mixer and in reality) that plays sound is the CENTER speaker!23:03
hoeqNow they're solid black.23:03
schizoTKSomewhere in there are settings for popup transparencies etc23:03
XubuntusI give up. This is TERRIBLE.23:03
hoeqBut then there's also the terminal-specific settings, which is what I am trying to get to work.23:04
schizoTKOnce compositing has been enabled, try opening terminal23:04
hoeqhmm, wait, I'll try closing my terminals, brb23:04
