sanubuntuhey guys, i've used the same 9.10 disk on two different laptops .. the first went off without a hitch .. but on this one (an old toshiba satellite) i don't get a desktop image, even tho i've selected one of the ubuntu studio ones.  what could be the case?  when i go to shut down, the image does appear briefly, but is not rendered in session.00:09
sanubuntui just save a photo to the desktop to see if it shows up, it doesn't show up on 'the desktop' area, but it IS in the desktop file  ...00:15

babarosabookman, thank you. Cody-Somerville, i am impressed to "meet" you! I'll be quiet now and listen a bit.01:22
cody-somervilleBookman, if its already installed, just run compiz --replace01:23
Bookmancody-somerville, worked wonders, thanks.01:23
cody-somervillenp01:24
Bookmanhmmm, I don't seem to be able to have more then two workspaces.01:27
sanubuntuhey guys, i've used the same 9.10 disk on two different laptops .. the first went off without a hitch .. but on this one (an old toshiba satellite) i don't get a desktop image, even tho i've selected one of the ubuntu studio ones.  what could be the case?  when i go to shut down, the image does appear briefly, but is not rendered in session.01:46
sanubuntui just save a photo to the desktop to see if it shows up, it doesn't show up on 'the desktop' area, but it IS in the desktop file  ...01:46
cody-somervillesanubuntu, I have no idea what you're asking.01:49
sanubuntucody-somerville: i have no desktop (image)01:54
sanubuntuthe rest of the system seems to be working, but i have no desktop image01:55
sanubuntuwhen i shut down, the image flashes on briefly, and disappears01:55
sanubuntuif i save something to 'desktop' i can access it through the filesystem, but it does not appear on the desktop01:56
sanubuntucody-somerville: is that clearer?   ever heard of this problem b4?01:57
cody-somervillepress alt+f201:57
cody-somervilleand type in: xfdesktop01:57
cody-somervillethen click run01:57
sanubuntuummm, its ubuntu in this case, will that still be same command?01:58
sanubuntucody-somerville: will that be same command for ubuntu 9.10?02:00
cody-somervillesanubuntu, please see #ubuntu for support with Ubuntu.02:00
cody-somervillexfdesktop is for the xfce4 desktop02:01
sanubuntucody-somerville: theres 1544 ppl in the ubuntu channel, i've been trying to get help for hours with no luck ..02:31
sanubuntui've always got better help in #xubuntu, can't you plz help me with this prob02:32
cody-somervillesanubuntu, So you're saying the problem is that you have no desktop or just no desktop wallpaper?02:32
sanubuntuwell, there is a desktop file, cause i saved a pic to it and accessed the pic through the filesystem02:33
sanubuntubut there is no desktop image, and of course the pic i saved does not appear on 'the desktop'02:34
sanubuntuits just a black screen02:34
sanubuntueverything else seems to work fine, i have an ubuntustudio background set for image, but it only appears momentarily when i shut down the system02:35
cody-somervilledo the panels show up?02:35

cody-somervillesanubuntu, just run this: nautilus02:42
sanubuntuk, nautilus open02:43
sanubuntucody-somerville: i got nautilus open02:48
cody-somervilleno desktop?02:48
sanubuntutheres a desktop file, with the two pics i saved to desktop inside02:49
sanubuntucody-somerville, i'm guessing that there must be a hidden file somewhere that orders desktop rendering?02:50
cody-somervillesanubuntu, did you disable rendering of the desktop?02:53
sanubuntucody-somerville: nope, wouldn't know how02:53
cody-somervillesanubuntu, you can try deleting your gconf settings02:54
cody-somervillesanubuntu, rm -rf ~/.gconf202:54
cody-somervillesanubuntu, then logout and log back in02:54
sanubuntuyou mean shutdown and restart?02:55
cody-somervilleno, logout and log back in02:55
sanubuntuok, i just ran rm -rf ~/.gconf202:55
sanubuntubrb02:55
sanubuntucody-somerville: nope, still no desktop image, but as i mentioned b4, upon logout or shutdown, it appears briefly .. just not in session02:58
cody-somervillesanubuntu, if you create a new account and log into that, does the same thing happen?02:59
sanubuntuhaven't tried a new user account02:59
sanubuntutrying it now03:00
carloschaconcody-somerville: its me, sanubuntu ... how strange, yeah now i got bg image and desktop with new user account03:16
carloschaconalso strange now instead of two gnome panels i have just one, and menu expands out of just one icon, instead of the Applications Places System standard appearance03:18
lomeanenhoi03:22
carloschaconcody-somerville: dangd thing now no tray for minimized apps .... arrrrrgggghhhhh ... but i do have a bg image03:22
carloschacongotta quit for 2day, i'm in costa rica on vacation for gods sake .. hahaha .. time for a beer; thanx for your help03:22
lomeanenCan anyone tell me which file I have to edit to prevent compiz and cairo from starting on X-bootup? I'm running xubuntu 9.10.03:24
lomeanenOr is there another way to return to the default xfce 2d window manager. Dinstalling compiz and emerald results in windows without borders.03:27
lomeanenDeactivating compiz and cairo in system settings does not work either.03:29
thumbtak1Hello04:11
thumbtak1Can anyone help me with a driver issue?04:11
likemindead!ask | thumbtak104:15
ubottuthumbtak1: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)04:15
thumbtak1Okay04:15
thumbtak1Can anyone help me with a driver issue?04:15
likemindead...04:16
likemindeadDetails, thumbtak1. What hardware? What drivers have you tried? Etc.04:16
thumbtak1I am trying to install a HP Pro Webcam Product number04:17
thumbtak1...04:17
thumbtak1ew193aa#aba04:17
likemindead!webcam04:18
ubottuInstructions for using webcams with Ubuntu can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Webcam - Supported cams: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsMultimediaWebCameras04:18
thumbtak1So my HP cam is not supported?04:18
likemindeadMay not be.04:19
likemindeadhttp://linux-uvc.berlios.de/04:20
thumbtak1This stinks. I need this for work. Glad I kept windows installed also04:20
likemindeadYup. Too many vendors don't support Linux. :-\04:21
likemindeadBut, as you can see at that link, there are many webcams that work perfectly in Linux.04:22
likemindeadSell that HP on eBay & buy a new one. :-)04:22
thumbtak1I know. I work from home with a few jobs and one requires me to use a webcam. I can't do the job without it.04:22
thumbtak1My brother bought me it and I need a webcam all the time for work. If I sell it I would need one same day04:22
likemindeadOkay, buy a new one first, then sell that one. ;-)04:23
likemindeadI actually just bought a Hercules Dualpix Exchange on eBay for $25 shipped.04:24
thumbtak1Does it install easily in xubuntu?04:26
likemindeadThere's not really any "install" -- it should plug & play, more or less.04:27
likemindeadAnd, like a lot of things in Linux, you can make adjustments/tweaks.04:28
thumbtak1I know04:28
thumbtak1I was trained in linux through college04:28
likemindeadCool.04:28
thumbtak1Terminal commands on red hat04:29
thumbtak1That is what I was trained in04:29
likemindeadRunning Xubuntu now? 9.10?04:30
thumbtak1Yes I used wubi-install in windows.04:30
likemindeadCool. I've haven't used Wubi. (Haven't used Windows at all in a couple of years.)04:31
thumbtak1It is a way of installing ubuntu and a few others without burning a CD/DVD. It downloads the ISO through its own software and then you are asked a few questions. After that you restart and in automatically does the whole install. No CD/DVD needed.04:33
thumbtak1I like that as I am always installing latest copy04:34
likemindeadI'm familiar with it. Work well for you?04:34
thumbtak1It worked with no problems. Only thing I had to do was edit the root password after install.04:34
likemindeadNice.04:35
thumbtak1I am having a strange, very strange issue and with a strange way of stopping issue04:35
likemindeadKarmic is still a little rough for some folks. They're working hard on the bugs.04:35
thumbtak1I hear a ticking noise out of speakers and it is caused from some application in the OS. The way I stop it is to start a flash application and stop or pause it. Then I minimize it and the noise stops. I leave it minimized.04:36
thumbtak1Do you know why that is?04:37
likemindeadStrange. I do not. :-\04:39
thumbtak1I know. Is it a flash glitch in the firefox plugin?04:39
thumbtak1At least I can shut it up04:40
thumbtak1I couldn't sleep over it. I had my internal and external speakers on laptop going off.04:41
thumbtak1That was weird04:42
thumbtak1My other issue is I would like to get my gamepad working also. Do you know how to get that working? I can't find any guide out there that makes since to me.04:44
likemindeadAgain, some hardware is supported & some isn't.04:45
likemindeadI bought a $10 Logitech gamepad that works great for old NES/SNES/Genesis emulation.04:45
thumbtak1I got a really good one that works great. With a built in fan for hand cooling04:45
thumbtak1Mine was 18 but normally 50 or so04:46
thumbtak1How did you you begin to get it reconized?04:46
likemindeadIt just worked. :-\04:46
thumbtak1Oh like the cam too??04:47
likemindeadAll I had to do was assign the buttons in each emulator.04:47
thumbtak1Let me try this again04:48
thumbtak1Nope this is what it says...04:53
thumbtak1Pad 1: /dev/js004:53
thumbtak1No such file or directory04:53

freewilliehello10:57
MaxFrameshello. I am affected by this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-screensaver/+bug/39789211:00
MaxFramesthe screensaver does not run when the computer has been idle for the set amount of time, it only starts manually11:00
MaxFramesI am confused because after upgrading to karmic I have two separate control panels for power saving: one is called xfce4 power manager and the other is gnome's11:01
MaxFramesI don't understand the need for two separate panels; and by the way they are currently set up differently and I'm not sure if either is working, or both, or none11:02
Sysii setted other to not start on boot11:02
Sysiwhen i had two power-managers11:02
MaxFramesfor instance, if I select "always show icon" in xfce4pm it does not work (no icon appears)11:02
MaxFramesSysi: are you using xubuntu karmic? does the screensaver work for you?11:03
Sysii haven't tried11:03
Sysii don't use screensaver11:03
MaxFramesif you could try it (set it to 1 minute and then wait) you would do me a great favor11:03
MaxFramesI often leave the PC unattended, and having to start the screensaver (with screenlock) manually every time is a nuisance11:04
MaxFramesdoes it work? :)11:14
Sysii'm not on my own computer right now11:15
Sysithis is some debian with old kde :E11:15
MaxFramesok11:15
MaxFramesit's a curious thing: this bug first surfaced on launchpad last summer, and it's still standing, and now triaged, but unassigned yet11:16
MaxFramesconsidering the other issues with karmic, I wonder if Canonical pushed the deadline to confront MS's 711:17
MaxFramesIMHO karmic wasn't ready yet... 1 week in RC and then release?!11:18
lomeanenThank you Sysi, I'll give your proposal a try.11:28
lomeanenAnother question: I would like to see the bootmessages at bootup, not that xfce mouse. How can I change that?11:30

Pres-Gasst, did you add the ppa.launchpad.net repo in that wiki?16:59
Pres-Gasbenchik, what was broken?16:59
benchikPres-Gas: there was a bug in smbclient (inherited from debian) that made the local net connection drop after a minute or so17:05
Pres-GasYou have the debian bug number, benchik?17:11
benchikPres-Gas: lemme check17:11
benchikhow is the site where you report bugs called?17:13
benchikbugzilla?17:14
Pres-GasDo you have the launchpad bug number, benchik?  Where did you see there was a bug, post the url or something.17:14
benchikhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fusesmb/+bug/19835117:15
Pres-Gasbugs.debian.org is the debian site bugs.launchpad.net is the Ubu stuff17:15
Pres-GasIt is unlikely, otherwise the launchpad site would say "Fix Released".  You could comment in that link you gave and ask for an update.17:19
benchikPres-Gas: the only reason i haven't updated to 8.10 at the time was this bug. i hope 10.04 will fix that. currently i have 8.04 lts17:23
Pres-Gasbenchik, what are you using smbclient for?17:30
Pres-Gas...or are you using fusesmb?17:31

stevensjOK.  I don't know much about the ubuntu thing, but I think that I know what you mean.  For some changes, I connect to remote machines with ssh -X user@machine.  This opens a terminal, but the '-X' bit means that if I open a GUI program, it opens on my screen.21:40
SWCDX|WORoh wow21:42
