My issue: Users and Groups has 3 users...student...teacher...and netbook (the admin user). I launch...unlock and proceed to change the "student" password. Everything appears to work....yet the student password never gets changed. Any ideas on what to look for? [15:06] figured I'd ask [15:11] Morning all [15:12] Where's student getting it's password from? Local box? Or ldap? [15:13] yes...manually # sudo passd student....works, but the "user and groups" thing does not [15:13] local [15:13] sbalneav: local [15:13] sbalneav: it's on the Open1to1 netbook [15:13] sbalneav: this is hopefully my last bug before rc [15:13] ok, so, open up a term [15:13] k [15:13] become root [15:13] sudo or su [15:14] grep sudent /etc/shadow [15:14] should have an encrypted password, yes? [15:14] yes [15:15] long line of mixed characters [15:15] ok. so try changing the password [15:15] don't close the term [15:15] Users and Groups goes through the motions, but when it comes time to test it by logging in as that user....the original password is not changed [15:15] OK [15:16] still open [15:17] k, do the grep again [15:17] done [15:17] oh...should I have done something in the meantime? [15:17] ;-) [15:18] is the encrypted password the same? [15:18] oh....I should have tried to change it....hang on [15:19] yes....exactly the same [15:19] ok, so users-admin has a bug. [15:20] dtrask: just run users-admin from the terminal, it tells you about the lines in /etc/passwd that it doesn't like. [15:20] either that, or you've mucked up the pam config. [15:22] sbalneav: I had sabayon installed and then had to remove it due to the small screen....the nested session was simply too hard to work with....could that have done something? [15:23] I wouldn't think so. [15:23] what happens if you log in as a student, then go to preferences -> about me, and change the password there. [15:24] I'm actually using kde password as the dialog for kids to change their passwords....and that works fine...the password sticks. [15:25] The person who reported the issue to me is an admin who has a student who forgot their password...he tried to reset it for them, but it won't work....using the users-admin gui "Users and Groups" [15:27] yes....the About me dialog also works [15:29] ok, so it's a bug with Users and Groups. [15:29] Which is hugely broken anyway. [15:30] Everything works except gksudo users-admin aka Users and Groups [15:30] Don't run it with gksudo [15:30] maybe that's you problem [15:30] It uses policykit, just run it normally and click the unlock button [15:30] how are you starting it, from the menu? [15:30] or like what you're doing? [15:30] I've seen the "users-admin not working" problem a lot of times, and it was always something it didn't like in my /etc/passwd. [15:31] E.g. if you run "useradd" and provide a blank password, users-admin then doesn't work, exactly like you describe [15:31] (i.e. it looks like it's working, but it doesn't update the passwd file) [15:32] If you delete the user with the blank password, then it runs properly again [15:33] thinking of ordinary users (admins)....any suggestions for a good way for them to reset student passwords...other than "sudo passwd username"? [15:33] another gui? [15:33] dtrask: how are you starting users admin? [15:33] from the command line? [15:34] or via the icon in system->administration? [15:34] no....actually from the icon....there is a button called "unlock" which I assume runs it as sudo or gksudo [15:34] but I have also tried it via the command line using gksudo users-admin [15:34] So after you do the unlock, it still isnt working? [15:34] from the menu? [15:34] correct [15:34] not working [15:34] lets try it. [15:35] either way [15:35] try what [15:35] changing it through the menu [15:35] I'd like to see what log lines it spits out. [15:35] in .xsession-errors [15:36] which log should I tail [15:36] k [15:36] sbalneav: it doesn't use a log file - it outputs the errors in stderr. It needs to be ran from a terminal to see the error output. [15:36] stderr should GO to .xsession-erros [15:37] in the users' home dir that's running the users-admin [15:37] Hmmm I don't remember if I've looked at .xsession-errors, but I didn't have anything related in /var/log. OK. :) [15:38] do you mean Xorg log? [15:38] there's no .xsession log [15:39] in the users home dir [15:39] who's doing the change [15:39] there's a .xsession-errors file. [15:39] doh! [15:39] I wasn't where I was supposed to be [15:40] where is the pastebin? [15:40] how do I paste the output to you? [15:41] usual ubuntu pastebin [15:41] never used it...or haven't in a long time....coach me? [15:42] is it paste.ubuntu.com? [15:44] I pasted it at paste.ubuntu.com [15:45] as dtrask [15:45] sbalneav: I don't see anything unusual, but maybe your trained eye will [15:46] http://paste.ubuntu.com/320085 [15:46] sbalneav: http://paste.ubuntu.com/320085 [15:46] sorry [15:47] * dtrask suddenly remembers pastebot and pastebin and feels like a doofus [15:49] yeah, I don't see anything unusual there myself. [15:50] look at bug #463353 this may be me [15:50] Launchpad bug 463353 in system-tools-backends "[users-admin] Modifying user has no effect" [Undecided,Fix committed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/463353 [15:50] LOL [15:50] ubottu: how do I get the fix? [15:50] Error: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :) [15:50] LOLO [15:51] looks like it's in karmic-proposed [15:51] so enable that in software sources [15:51] the danger to that is, there's other stuff it will probably affect [15:51] so testing will be needed. [15:52] -proposed is for bugfixes that haven't been officially put into production yet. [15:52] and if it works, leave a comment on the bug so hopefully they release it to the normal repositories sooner [16:02] patch downloaded...now to test [16:04] By George I think we've got it! [16:04] I will let them know it works and that they should push it out soon [16:04] this is a big fat hairy bug for schools and organizations of the like [16:04] many thanks to you guys! [16:04] sbalneav: [16:05] sbalneav: thx man....you were a huge help [16:05] sbalneav: at least got me pointed in the right direction [16:05] alkisg: thx for your help [16:06] dtrask: you're welcome, but you found the solution yourself... :) [16:07] I enable "proposed"....apt-get install system-tools-backends....and then disabled "proposed" it's bug #463353 and it's kind of annoying in a school environment with 1 to 1 netbooks and a sysadmin trying to reset a kids password that they "forgot" [16:07] Launchpad bug 463353 in system-tools-backends "[users-admin] Modifying user has no effect" [Undecided,Fix committed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/463353 [16:08] Man, I remember when all this hullabaloo about cups going to "pdf only" printing. [16:08] for ubuntu [16:08] it's utterly and completely fail. [16:08] I remember that too....it wouldn't create the PDF directory...had to do it manually [16:08] etc [16:09] that was the bug in the last image I did [16:09] the *pdf filters do not honour ANY postscript printer directives [16:09] seems to be one in every image....one "hard" one....most are easy [16:09] oh that one [16:09] yeah [16:09] So, so long as you want to print out to plain paper ONLY [16:09] you're fine. [16:09] Want an envelope? [16:09] foget it [16:09] Letterhead? [16:09] right? [16:09] LOL [16:10] Multi-bin [16:10] You know, things you need in a business? [16:10] in the real world. [16:10] yep [16:10] has it been addressed? [16:10] You know, that mystical place where Rocket Man plans to make money from? [16:10] No [16:10] I'm fixing it. [16:10] again. [17:43] highvoltage: it either needs to get updated or made in such a way that it's not dependent on individual people [17:44] LaserJock: for now I'll just remove all the people, someone should just contact edubuntu-devel for now [17:45] edubuntu-users or edubuntu-devel [17:47] I notice nixternal's got his name up there? [17:48] ya, they asked me...I tried to say "hey, I haven't done much in a while" but that didn't fly with them [17:48] heh [17:48] good for you [17:49] hmmm, I wonder if I ...... [17:49] yes... !? [17:49] :p [17:49] LaserJock: we accept your nomination [17:49] lol [17:49] no, no [17:50] Edubuntu: Takes no prisoners [17:50] I'm having a hard enough time as it is butting out of everything [17:50] LaserJock: ouch, sounds ugly [17:50] everybody is doing a great job of replacing me [17:50] (not that it was hard) [17:51] but work is getting more demanding [17:51] and I've got lots of other things demanding my attention as well [17:55] Oh, the rockstar life you lead! [17:55] Shooting molecules with lasers [17:56] developing programs [17:56] with ill-tempered sharks [17:56] graphing graphs [17:56] sbalneav: you left out the white coats [18:29] highvoltage: I've never really worn a lab coat [18:29] highvoltage: I'm too much of a physicist [18:29] we're more into pocket protectors and slide rules [18:38] :) [20:23] "If LTSP is to be viable" heh [20:23] That's the beauty of LTSP [20:23] I've never MADE a dime off of it [20:23] HI [20:24] I'm not MAKING any money off of it [20:24] I have a laptop DELL Inspiron 6400 with a ATI X1400 video card. [20:24] I've tried different approaches described on several forums but nothing is working properly. Now i have installed on my laptop the Radeon driver and i have some graphical acceleration but is working slow and the resolution is stucked at 1024x768. [20:24] I booted from the CD loads and everything worked fine and the ATI graphics acceleration worked really well. [20:24] How can i make it work like that on my installed version? [20:24] and I expect NEVER to make any money off of it :) [20:24] So I'll always be viable :) [20:25] IulianISI: Hmm, I think you have to go into the "restricted driver" manager and enable the propriatary drivers. [20:25] Since most ATI cards seem to want the commercial driver. [20:26] yeah, Systems -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers [20:26] it dose not work [20:26] Define "Does not work"? [20:27] Does it give you an error? [20:27] with propriatary drivers the acceleration is off [20:27] Ok, have you tried to turn it on? [20:28] how? [20:29] Well, I think there's a checkbox beside it, or something. I don't know for sure, as I don't have any propriataty drivers on my machine. [20:29] have you tried double-clicking on the driver line? [20:30] Which version of Edubuntu are you running> [20:30] ? [20:30] 9.10 [20:30] ubuntu 9.10 [20:31] So you're not running Edubuntu? [20:31] no [20:32] Well, #ubuntu might know better, but I'm pretty sure you enable the drivers in that application. [20:33] There's an "enable" button down at the bottom [20:33] did you highlight the driver and hit the "enable" button? [20:33] It's at the bottom right, above "Close" [20:34] IulianISI: You still with me there? [20:34] it doesn't appear in hardware drivers [20:36] Well, you said above: [20:36] with propriatary drivers the acceleration is off [20:36] so, IS there a driver listed there? Or not? [20:36] no [20:37] So it's completely blank? [20:37] No drivers listed at all in the "hardware drivers" application? [20:37] i think i've tried all of them [20:37] I'm confused [20:37] just the drivers for the wireless card [20:37] "I've tried all of them" means there ARE some there. [20:38] so there's drivers listed there for wireless, but not video, is that what you're saying? [20:39] i have tried : propriataty drivers, Radeon drivers [20:39] yes [20:39] ATi drivers [20:40] I mean a tried ATI drivers from ATI site [20:40] they cannot be installed on 9.10 [20:41] Here's what I want you to answer for me: "Are there any video drivers listed in the 'Hardware Drivers' application?" [20:41] no [20:41] ok [20:42] But you say when you boot the laptop from the CD, then there ARE drivers, yes? [20:42] to have some acceleration i uninstalled and then installed again the Xorg [20:43] no,there are no drivers but it works ok [20:44] if i do lspci -k on cd and on install ver is something like: [20:44] 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X1400 [20:44] Kernel modules: radeon [20:45] ok, so it's detecting a radeon driver. [20:45] yes [20:46] you could try doing a sudo dpkg-reconfige xserver-xorg [20:46] sorry [20:46] sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg [20:46] doesn't work [20:47] i do not have a Xorg.con file [20:48] Shouldn't matter [20:48] try doing both xserver-xorg [20:48] and xserver-xorg-core [20:49] Apart from that, I don't know. I gave up on ATI cards years ago as unusable. [20:49] There's just me here, and probably a lot more in just plain #ubuntu [20:50] tx verry much [20:51] NP, good luck === jfluhmann_ is now known as jfluhmann
