jago25Ubiquity is freezing for me on language selection. I can't download >~10mb due to bandwith problems. So I need t ofall back on to another way to install. How do I fall back to the debian installer? Alternatively, perhaps I could update Ubuquity? I think the crashing is due to a complicated partition table possibly; fdisk -l says the partitions are out of order (but windows works find)13:18
jago25Quiet i inhere :/14:02
lcapriotticjwatson: grub-installer_1.43ubuntu8_i386.udeb: <grub-install --no-floppy "(hd0)"> fails due to a missing /etc/mtab in /target, any advice? (Custom LiveCD)14:05
lcapriottiworks fine after manually executing "grep -v rootfs /proc/mounts > /etc/mtab"14:06
evcjwatson: http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/6/16/163 - fail.14:28
evperhaps we should record this on the filesystem as part of livecd-rootfs?14:29
evsaving us the time of calculating something that is static.14:29
lcapriotticjwatson: commenting line "[ ! -h /etc/mtab ] || return 0" in functions.sh/update_grub makes the installer work, would you mind to explain?15:01
lcapriottiother info: grub legacy selected15:02

evbootchart works quite nicely: http://people.canonical.com/~evand/tmp/ubiquity-to-summary.png15:16
cjwatsonlcapriotti: I have no idea, but surely the bug is the missing mtab, not any code in grub-installer15:18
cjwatsonev: record as part of livecd-rootfs> works for me15:18
evcoolness, I'll make that change todayish15:18
lcapriottiright, but mtab is built by that update_mtab15:19
cjwatsonjago25: a freeze during language selection can't be due to your partition table15:19
lcapriottiwhich works by commenting the [ -h ...15:19
cjwatsonlcapriotti: that test is "is /etc/mtab already a symlink?"15:19
cjwatsonand if it's a symlink, that's typically to /proc/mounts, so it can't update that15:20
lcapriottiright, in d-i's root fs that is a symlink15:20
lcapriottibut what about mtab in /target?15:20
lcapriottithat is the one missing15:21
lcapriottiand that is the one created by update_mtab15:21
cjwatsonoh, that should be $ROOT/etc/mtab I think15:21
lcapriottihehe, that's what I thought15:21
cjwatsonmaybe?15:21
cjwatsonI'd have to check the history to make sure15:21
cjwatsonfile a bug please15:21
lcapriottilaunchad for debian-install?15:22

lcapriottiK, on my way. Tks for your support15:23
cjwatsonyes, looks like it was introduced by a freebsd porter15:24

ubottuLaunchpad bug 484832 in grub-installer "grub-installer fails to create /target/etc/mtab - it checks for d-i /etc/mtab rather than /target/etc/mtab" [Undecided,New]15:27
cjwatsonlcapriotti: fixed upstream15:40
lcapriotticool, looking forward to the new udeb15:40
cjwatsonwell, for lucid ...15:40
lcapriottitoo bad, I'd need it for karmic15:41
cjwatsonyou have a custom iso anyway :-)15:41
lcapriottisure, but I would like to rely on official udebs!15:42
lcapriottianyway, good to have understood there the problem is15:42
lcapriottiand with grub2 it seems it's ok - doesn't it rely on mtab too?15:43
cjwatsonit doesn't try to edit it15:43
cjwatsonactually I don't recall exactly what needs mtab, sorry15:44
* cjwatson is at a conference and not really well-placed to dig that out :)15:44
lcapriottino problm, you were very helpful15:44
jago25This is a repeat question after 2hr wait and seeing some activity in here: Ubiquity is freezing for me on language selection. I can't download >~10mb due to bandwith problems. So I need t ofall back on to another way to install. How do I fall back to the debian installer? Alternatively, perhaps I could update Ubuquity? I think the crashing is due to a complicated partition table possibly; fdisk16:14
jago25-l says the partitions are out of order (but windows works find)16:14
jago25Would love to have at least just the twinkle of an opinion on it :/16:24
jago25:/ o well, I give up then, bye16:39
cjwatsonjago25: I answered you already!16:58
cjwatson15:19 <cjwatson> jago25: a freeze during language selection can't be due to your partition table16:58
cjwatsonjago25: you can use the alternate install CD if you want to use d-i16:59
cjwatsonjago25: but a ubiquity freeze on language selection indicates some rather strange problem ... perhaps a dodgy CD (drive|disk)?16:59
evcjwatson: does this look okay to you <http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/321690/>?17:37
cjwatsonev: yes, looks fine17:45
evthanks17:45
