BookmanI am having a problem with a computer accessing the internet via a proxy connection to a machine running dansguardian.01:28
BookmanAll I get is "openfire http binding service" as a response whenever I try to access a website via Firefox.  If I set the connection to direct connection to the internet all is fine.01:29
ycyhttp://tutzone.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/essential-softwares/vlc.png which movie is this?01:29
BookmanThe connection was wired.  The wireless for a bit and now I have taken it back to wired and this is when the problem started.01:29

Bookmanhow do I unbind a port?01:55
ninjahBookman: Stop using it01:56
Bookmanninjah: I tried that01:56
ninjahWhat port and what do you have it "bound" too?01:56
BookmanI get the following when trying to start dansguardian:  Error binding server socket: [8080] (Address already in use) Exiting with error01:58
ninjahSomething is using port 808001:58
ninjahfind out what that is and kill it01:58
BookmanI tried finding out what the process was with netstat -a01:59
BookmanCan't seem to find it listed01:59
ninjahhmm...02:02
ninjahwhat do you have running on the system02:02
BookmanI had openfire running but stopped it02:03
BookmanI am at a loss.  Apparently nothing is using that port, and yet dansguardian say it is.02:05
ninjahBookman: Check /etc/services02:06
ninjahyou might have to add it to the list02:06
HellMindI got a ubuntu 8.03 tls, runing the openvz kernel, I've installed an ftp server on a guest, but when I connect from internet, the servers DIES03:56
HellMindwhat can be?03:56
HellMindI tried proftpd and pure-ftpd03:56
HellMindI tried 2 differnt ports03:56
HellMindHow a ftp client can HANG the server :X03:57
HellMindmaybe is the firewall04:01
HellMindI use ufw04:02
HellMindand I hate it04:02
HellMindmaybe the portforward rule is doing the damage04:02
HellMindI dont see any logs about it :(04:02
HellMindand my server is on a datacenter :(04:03
HellMindtrow ideas04:03
jmarsdenTurn off ufw and retest -- if it was ufw you will then know it was ufw.  Then you can look at the ufw rules and find out exactly what part of them was responsible.04:03
HellMindI tell them to reboot the server04:05
HellMindand it happens again04:05
HellMindnow is the 3rd time04:06
HellMindso they will ignore me now :(04:06
HellMindso when it comes online04:06
HellMindI should ufw disable04:06
HellMindand try to connect again to the ftp?04:07
HellMindwhere are the setting of ufw, where it stores the allow or deny?04:09
HellMindI found where to put the nat rules but the input filter ones no04:09
HellMindI dont understand why ubuntu-server accept that damn firewall04:11
HellMindhere is :S /var/lib/ufw/user[6].rules04:12
jmarsdenAlso look in /etc/ufw/04:12
jmarsdenBut what makes you think it is ufw that is causing the issue?  Did you have an ssh session to the server open and tailing relevant log files as things happened?04:13
jmarsdenufw is just a front end for iptables, no more and no less.04:14
HellMindI think is ufw because I added a port forward rule to connect to the ftp server04:14
HellMindI looked on syslog and nothing is writed04:14
HellMindits  a very hard hang04:15
jmarsdenThe server is at a datacenter, so not behind a home firewall box... so why would you need a port forward to access FTP?04:15
HellMindMaybe is a kernel panic04:15
HellMindthe firewall is the ubuntu-server04:15
jmarsdenThen for sure no "port forward" is needed.04:15
HellMindbecause im runing openvz04:15
HellMindso i got guest04:15
HellMindthat need nat04:15
HellMindI only got 1 ip04:16
jmarsdenOne IP is enough for FTP service with no "port forwarding".04:16
HellMinddo you understand there are server virtual computer runing on the ubuntu server?04:17
HellMindseveral04:17
HellMindone of that virtual machine needs a ftp server04:18
jmarsdenYou have one IP per several openvz virtual hosts?  Not one per VM?  At a datacenter?  Seems slightly odd, but OK...04:18
HellMindyes :) its cheaper that way :(04:19
jmarsdenEarlier, you said you are running openvz and have one IP.  I assumed one IP for that once instance of openvz...04:19
HellMindhaha you wish04:19
jmarsdenI'm pretty sure you can get one IP on one VM at Linode for cheap, $20/month I think it is for their lowest end VM.04:20
HellMindI will ask for that04:20
HellMindbut first how the server can hang04:20
jmarsdenI don't know... but openvz is not full virftualization...04:20
jmarsdenThey don't even give you a console where you can do your own reboots of your own openvz virtual machine?04:21
HellMindno, because is a home made server04:23
HellMindit doesnt got kvm04:23
HellMindor something to cut the power04:23
HellMindim planning build something to do that :(04:23
HellMindbut the question here is, how an ftp can tilt a linux box04:25
HellMinda ftp connection04:25
HellMindits like magic :(04:27
HellMindwhos fault :( ubuntu?04:27
HellMindme04:27
HellMindopenvz?04:27
HellMindfwd?04:27
crohakonI like magic04:34
HellMindI dont04:34
HellMindmagic is when you dont know the trick :(04:35
jmarsdenWhy would you choose to use/pay for a homemade server in a datacenter so cheap that it has no KVM or serial console access to machines colocated there??  Seems... like you are just asking for trouble :)  FTP didn't hang the box, just one openvz instance, from your description.04:54
HellMindA home made server cost cheaper04:59
HellMindI got access to the datacenter04:59
HellMindbut its far04:59
HellMindI dont like to travel to there04:59
HellMindwhy openvz?04:59
HellMindit hangs when I try to connect it05:00
HellMindi will go to the datacenter :(05:10
HellMindI must learn who is the saint claus this time05:10
HellMindi will see you there.05:10

jongbergshi, im planning to set up an ubuntu server, which ubuntu version should i go into? the stable one..06:07
jmarsdenjongbergs: Normally, yes, use LTS releases for servers, so 8.04.3 LTS is the current LTS release.  However, you are less than six months from 10.04 at this point, so you could use Karmic 9.10 now, since you'll (presumably?) be updating within a couple of months of 10.04 coming out.  Your call: the standard advice is to use the LTS release for servers.06:33
jongbergsjmarsden: thank you so much for the suggestion, i'll consider 8.04 LTS to be used as our server OS07:44
jmarsdenjongbergs: No problem.07:44

alex88morning,i have a xen vps with ubuntu 9.04, so no grub etc.. is there a special mode to upgrade it instead of using dist-upgrade?10:51
alkisgI ssh'ed to my server, tried to copy a big file to another server via nfs, and then my ssh connection broke. Now when I log on I can see the copy process but I can't kill it, not even with kill -9. I can't even reboot the server remotely. Any ideas?13:35
alex88someone can help me to forward a port with iptables?13:48
Boohbahiptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -i eth0 -d xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx --dport 8888 -j DNAT --to 192.168.0.2:8014:00

alex88Boohbah: thanks i'll try14:03
alex88Boohbah: i can substitute the second line just adding port 80 to apf rules right?14:04

fakhirello everyone. so i run a server out of my home with ubuntu server and my problem is that mail servers that i sent mail to with php mail() reject my emails "Your access to this mail system has been rejected due to the sending MTA's poor reputation."21:55
fakhirany solutions?21:55
epinkyfakhir: use a relay like google?21:58
fakhirhow would that work? is there a tutorial somewhere? i dont know much about the technical workings of mail servers21:59
guntbertfakhir: then plase don't run a public one!!!22:02
fakhira public what?22:02
fakhiri have very little interest in mail servers. i run several websites and i just need to be able to send out account recovery emails with PHP22:03
guntbertfakhir: *don't run a public mail server (one connected to the internet) if you don't know what you are doing!!!22:03
qman__fakhir, then all you need is an internet site configuration, but you should prevent incoming mail (and requests to send mail) at the firewall22:04
epinkyfakhir: If you don't know much about technical workings of mail servers, most of the time it'll end like spam server :), what's the MTA you're using? (Postfix, Exim, qmail, Sendmail)22:04
qman__otherwise you're going to be in spam trouble22:04
fakhirpostfix22:05
qman__also, if you're hosting sites for other people, make sure you keep an eye on them, make sure their sites are not being used for spam22:07
qman__once you get blacklisted for spam it's really tough to get un-blacklisted22:07
fakhiri am not22:07
fakhiri suspect the reason i am unable to send emails is because this server is on a residential internet connection22:07
qman__yes, that would be it22:08
fakhiri gather the right solution would be some sort of relay but i do not know where to start22:08
qman__my ISP does the same thing, it's to prevent spam22:08
qman__what I did was set it up to send through a gmail account22:08
qman__to do it you start with internet site configuration, let me see if I can find the tutorial for it22:08
epinkyfakhir: this can give you an idea of using a relay dont' follow yum parts :) http://www.wormly.com/blog/2008/11/05/relay-gmail-google-smtp-postfix/22:09
fakhiri use godaddy for my email host. it would be great if i could use that22:09
fakhirepinky, yeah that looks like it could help me :) thanks22:11
epinkyfakhir: you're welcome22:11

billybigriggeranyone here familiar with setting up a socks server?22:59
billybigriggeri want to have a friend connect through my server, and then be able to login to my usenet account so it looks like both of us are coming from the same IP address23:00
billybigriggeras we share the account and multiple connections from different ip's are not allowed23:00
billybigriggerbasically setup a proxy server, correct?23:00
billybigriggeralso i'm having problems with my networking on my server...23:05
billybigriggerifconfig shows eth0 is up with an ip address of 192.168.1.111, as defined in my /etc/network/interfaces23:05
billybigriggeryet i can't ping google.com23:05
billybigriggeryet i can ping inside the local network23:06
epinkybillybigrigger: you mean TCP forwarding?23:06

darkpixelWhen I plug in a USB device, how can I find out where it creates it's /dev/whatever file?  I used to plug in my UPS and get /dev/usbHID0.  I checked syslog, dmesg, and lsusb but find nothing.23:08
billybigriggeri think nntp (newsgroups) is udp isn't it?23:08
billybigriggerdarkpixel, /var/log/messages or dmesg should show you when a device is plugged in23:08
billybigriggerdarkpixel, you can try tail -f /var/log/messages and then plug it in and watch that terminal for changes23:08
darkpixelbillybigrigger: All I get in messages is that a device was plugged in and what configuration option was selected, but nothing about the /dev file.23:09
darkpixelbillybigrigger: Nevermind.  I think I have a bigger problem.  Plugging in a USB GPS shows me clearly that it's ttyUSB0, but plugging in my smartcard reader that worked under 9.04 gives me nothing.  Bah!23:11
darkpixel*facepalm* Forgot to install libasedrive-usb.23:16
jmarsdenbillybigrigger: NNTP uses TCP at port 119 by default.23:22
jmarsdenbillybigrigger: Why doesn't your friend just ssh to your server and use SSH's port forwarding to access NNTP through it -- should be less work that setting up socks ?23:23
benediktwhat spam filter would you use for a small single domain email server23:55
benediktim using SA, ClamAV, pyzor, dcc and MailScanner for a 20 domian mailfilter server at work, but it seems a little overkill for a small private server23:56
epinkybenedikt: SpamAssassin? SpamFighter?23:58
