sbalneavMorning all14:51
dgroosGood Morning sbalneav!14:53
researcher:)Hello everybody16:44
dgroosresearcher: hello!16:46
researcherthanks u noticed me16:47
dgroos:)16:48
researcheris this the only way to communicate here?16:48
researcherCant we make voice talk here?16:48
dgroosas an irc I think it's only text...16:48
researcherok16:49
researcherI want a picture to appear at the bottom of screen on edubuntu when a kid studies16:49
researcheris it possible ?16:49
mhall119what do you mean?16:50
dgroosyes... a student logs in to their account, right?16:51
mhall119you want a picture to appear on top of everything else?16:51
dgroosthen?  do you mean this would be their desktop 'wall paper'?16:51
researchernot wall paper16:51
researcherat the bottom of the screen16:51
researchersmall pic or text16:52
mhall119in the panel?  or floating above everything else?16:52
researcherI must have options16:52
researcherpanel preferred16:53
dgroosdescribe how you plan on using it--why you want it--what is the purpose of this picture.16:54
researcherI want to creat a CD with my name and photo16:54
researcherso that in whichever cllass it is installed studnet sknow the teacher name and photo16:55
dgroosdon't get the CD part...16:56
researcherthat means its my photo and my name so my laboratory kids know this resource has come  from this teacher16:56
dgrooshow does this relate to the idea of a CD?16:57
researcherabout CD part. .... Want to have self installable edubuntu CD16:57
researcherwhen it is inserted and PC started then it installs Edubuntu..16:57
researcherwhich edubuntu when used shows my picture and name16:57
researcherdid I make my requirements clear ?16:58
dgroosgetting close!  do you want a permanent install on the PC or do you want to run it off the CD so there is no change made to the HD of the PC?17:01
researcherPermanent install on the PC17:02
dgroosoptions depend, I think, on weather users will be logging in a school wide server.  Or, is there no log in?  If a server, will it be edubuntu server?17:06
researcherno server17:06
researcherstand alone pc17:06
researcherthere is no login17:07
dgroosOK, now there are a few things here.17:07
researcheryes plz17:08
dgroosActually, edubuntu no longer uses CD but DVD--gives more options.17:08
researcherok17:08
dgroosIs there a network available to connect all these stand-alones, to?17:08
researchermay be at times17:09
researchernormally unconnected PCs17:10
dgroosInstead of using a speciallized DVD, I would consider installing on a single PC, customizing it with a picture/name like you want, then by making an image of it onto a flash drive, then going around, from computer to computer, and burning this speciallized image on to each PC.17:13
researcherthats enough good17:14
dgroosThen, customizing the PC for another classroom, make new image and repeat process.  'course, could use a USB external HD too.17:14
researcherthats fine17:14
dgroosSo... there are 2 things here...17:14
researcherplz17:14
dgroos1.  how do you add the image to the bottom of a window (mhall119? he's your man on that).  And...17:15
mhall119I am?17:16
alkisg(for an icon or text with a customized picture, see the fish applet: right click on a panel, add applet, fish...)17:16
dgroossi senor :)17:16
alkisg(and it supports a custom command when clicked, so you could pop-up a dialog with your name there, with zenity)17:16
dgroosgood evening alkisg17:17
alkisgHi all - just dropping an idea and leaving to see a TV show :D17:17
researcherwhat am I to do now. Whats this fish applet?17:18
alkisghttp://www.fifi.org/doc/gnome-help-data/html/fish_applet/C/index.html ==> but of course you can put your face instead of a fish17:19
alkisgTry it on your ubuntu to see.17:19
researcheroh.thanks17:19
* alkisg will be back later...17:19
researcher:-D17:20
researcherhow to save this chat for later reference?17:20
dgroos2.  to learn about the process of making and using images, check out http://clonezilla.com--pretty slick, pretty efficient too.17:22
researcherok.thanks17:22
researcherit says "server not found"17:23
researcherok . Got it17:23
dgrooslots of ways to save.  besides using the built in possiblities of the chat client you are using, you can copy the whole chat and past it into a wordprocessing document.17:24
researcherok17:24
dgroossorry--yes http://clonezilla.org17:24
dgroosGood luck!17:24
researcheru people r wonderfully helpfull17:25
researchermay u have all thats Peace, health,Wealth and Joy17:25
dgroosanother resource is join the edubuntu list--it's an e-mail list where you can get help via e-mailing. Do a search for edubuntu users list.17:27
dgroosThanks and to you as well.17:27
researchergood night17:28
researcherHow can I meet you again?17:28

vistroHello. I just performed a clean install of Ubuntu on another computer last night, and when I installed edubuntu (after applying all of the package upadates), I can't login after a reboot.20:18
vistroI logon, and I get the Ubuntu logo and the logon loading thing, and then it bumps me right back to the logon screen20:18
vistroThe only thing that changes is that the screen resolutionchanges to what I picked for my account, but it goes right back to the original resolution when it puts me back at the logon screen20:19
vistroWhat do I do?20:19
feathercloudHey, running ltsp-server with 3 nics, 2 ltsp-client subnets and an internet connected interface: ldm doesn't start in this case: tty7 echo's nc: invalid option -- 'f'. (using ltsp 5 on ubuntu karmic). Disabling one thin client network iface in dhcp-server 'solves' the issue. Is this a known bug?20:36
=== dgroos_ is now known as dgroos
vistroCan anyone here help with a logon problem after installing edubuntu?21:09
alkisgvistro: on LTSP clients? or on a standalone pc?21:13
vistrostandalone21:13
vistroonce a user is created and logged in21:13
vistroone logout, and it's useless21:13
vistrothe most I can do is a terminal if I select xsometing from the session menu21:14
vistroit acts like it will log in, and it goes back to the logon screen21:14
alkisgSee the user's ~/.xsession-errors for any messages21:14
vistrothe most noticable change it goes through in the steps to bring me my desktop is it changes my screen rez for maybe 6 secons21:14
vistrohow do I do that?21:14
alkisgGet the xterm thing, and run: cat ~/.xsession-errors21:15
vistroOkay. I'm in the middle of trying to uninstlall edubuntu to see if that helps21:15
vistroNope, same song and dance... I'll try that .xsession-errors thing21:16
vistrowhat am I looking for here?21:17
vistrothree lines of output21:17
vistro/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...21:20
vistroSetting IM through im-switch for locale-en_US.21:21
vistroStart IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default.21:22
vistroand that's it21:22
alkisgRight, it doesn't tell you anything :(21:22
vistroI'm not reinstalling the system again21:22
vistroit's a pain in the ass when it won't let me see half of my screen21:23
alkisgWell, that's as far as I can go, so either wait for someone else, or try to also ask in #ubuntu21:23
vistrothe people in #ubuntu really don't care21:23
sbalneavvistro: Have you tried turning off desktop effects?22:20
vistrocan't get in to do that22:21
vistroI managed to recover it by installing KDE and then loggint into gnome22:21
vistrobut the stupid son of a bitch won't connect to a wireless network now22:21
vistrogreaaatttt OS you got here22:21
vistroeven if I put the god damned wireless card on the stupid router, can't see it for jackl22:22
vistroI suppose Ubuntu was designed to break wireless compatibility on a desktop machine22:23
sbalneavWhat kind if wireless card is it?  Only some wireless carda are supported22:23
vistroLinksys22:24
vistrousb card22:24
vistroit sees it22:24
vistrobut good luck connecting to a network22:24
sbalneavThere are some bugs in NetworkManager that I think are fixed in "Proposed", but not in the main archive.22:25
vistrothen where do I get them22:25
vistrothe card works just fine on my laptop22:25
sbalneavYou might try turning on the "Proposed" archive in software-sources, and doing an update22:25
vistrothus confirming my theoroy on ubuntu's hate for desktop wireless22:25
sbalneavSystem -> Admin -> Software sources22:26
sbalneavclick on "updates" tab22:26
sbalneavcheck off "karmic-proposed"22:26
sbalneavThen update your system.22:26
sbalneavYou're using edubuntu?22:28
sbalneavvistro: I'm heading home for the day.  I'll be on later on tonight if you need any further help.22:31
vistrocan't do it22:37
vistroat all. ever22:37
vistrowon't let me log into gnome on any account other than the non-superuser22:37
vistroso that won't work at all ever22:37
vistrowish there was a magic command that turned off the shitty_experience package22:38
vistrosomehow my laptop turned that off for me22:38
vistrohow do I enter this menu on SDE?22:38
