scunizithere's a widgit called opendesktop.. I know it connects to something but what is it intended towards?01:08
gorgonzolascunizi its intended to find other people using kde near you01:15
gorgonzolascunizi but i have never used it01:15
gorgonzolamight wanna look here: http://dot.kde.org/2009/05/01/social-desktop-starts-arrive01:15
ari__anybody knows of a panel clock similar of gnome's (with various time-zones)? Can't figure out how to do that in KDE.01:15
russlarari__: World Clock01:16
russlarari__: shoudl come standard, might be in plasma-addons01:16
ari__can I put that in a panel as a digital clock??01:16
gorgonzolaari__ what do you mean?01:17
scunizigorgonzola: thanks.. ummm.. ok.. what't the purpose of the widgit dashboard icon? after clicking I get a tab top dead center of the screen but don't see any functionality about it.01:17
ari__just as the standard digital clock....01:17
ari__the same gnome digital clock would suffice, but I'm in KDE now..01:18
gorgonzolascunizi, you are talking about the social desktop thingy? if its that, then i guess you have to configure it first01:18
gorgonzolaari__ i'm sorry, i don;t know the gnome clock. but the standard clock displays time zones if you tell it to. i have like five time zones in mine :)01:19
scunizigorgonzola: no.. different icon.. on my desktop it's just to the right of the desktop switcher on the bottom bar01:19
russlarari__: yes01:20
ari__how??01:20
russlarari__: world clock?01:20
ari__digital clock01:21
ari__In Gnome I click on it and it just shows the calendar and the clocks for the different zones01:22
russlarari__: same way you would ahy other...01:22
ari__can't make it to do it with the digital clock01:22
ari__I go to "Digital clock settings"01:22
ari__then Time zones01:22
ari__it just doesn't show.01:23
gorgonzolascunizi: mmmm, you mean the "show dashboard" widget? if that's it, it's supposed to move all windows aside and show you your dashboard, ie the desktop in plasma-speak01:25
scunizigorgonzola: ah.. ok.. I didn't have any windows open to move.. and dashboard is ? the desktop?01:29
gorgonzolascunizi: not quite. is the place where the widgets that are not attached to panels live in. so if you have a bunch of widgets in the "desktop", show dashboard will fade all windows and show your widgets01:30
gorgonzolascunizi, like in mac os x. personally, i'm an old fashioned guy, so i use show desktop. but its almost the same thing. feel free to play with the different options.01:30
scunizigorgonzola: moving from gnome to kde is an adventure in relearning01:39
scunizigorgonzola: interesting widgit "opendesktop" .. looks like I had already signed up for it previously but forgot about it.01:46
macoscunizi: its your kde-look account01:47
macoor gnome-look01:47
maco(its all one backend)01:48
compilerwriter_It is even more of and adventure these days with plasma scunizi and gorgonzola.  But gorgonzola I think you will like the change once accustomed to it.01:49
macoits pretty now!01:49
gorgonzolacompilewriter oh, nevermind me, i've been using it for years :P01:53
Ev0luti0n_anybody here guys?01:53
gorgonzolascunizi sorry, got a little distracted. yes, it's very different, but if you get used to it you'll love it. its the future! gotta go now. good luck with the learning.01:54
compilerwriter_Oops it appears I have grabbed the wrong end of the stick.  scunizi  you will like it once you get used to the change.01:56
ari__how to deselect time zones now? I selected all by mistake!01:57
ari__Ctrl+A - Select all; Ctrl+Shift+A (system "Deselect") - Nothing :(01:58
ari__got all timezones selected! :(01:58
macoclick somewhere?01:59
ari__maco: nah, doesn't work02:01
ari__maco: just removed it and started over.02:02

cherry_how do I create an xorg.conf, I need a resolution that is not automatically detected?05:02

smorgcherry_: use xrandr. If you want to generate one use "xorg -config". If it isn't available in xrandr then you probably won't be able to set it in xorg.conf05:06
smorgcherry_: there are several other ways to automatically generate an xorg.conf as well iirc.05:06

RoastedDoes anybody find that if you right click anything in the quick file folder search menu next to the K button that KDE crashes?05:40
harolddongis anybody else using strigi to index their kmail emails?  I set it up but upon search the only results that turn are the raw data files in the kmail profile folder, which have to be opened with kate to look for the email referencing what was searched.  Is there anyway to get it to display results in a more meaningful and usable way?05:42

tjeVarious reg values of "reg 0", "reg 1c" and "reg 3c".   Any thoughts?   A google search returned nothing.07:08
tjeI found a fix for a similar problem relating to the sound drivers whereby it said to pass "ac97_codec=0" to the snd-atiixp module in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf, but that param is invalid for the snd-atiixp-modem module.07:09
tjeRTFS of atiixp_modem.c reveals very few parameters; index, id, and ac97_clock.  None of which appear (based on their description) to be of any use here.07:11

s2rBluesKaj wpa2 works fine with wpa supplicant. Does wicd allow for system connections or you have to login first?15:39
tsimpsonbradpitt: those are all in openjdk-6-jdk, which you may not need unless developing java stuff15:39
tsimpsons2r: it needs you to be logged in15:40
BluesKajs2r, wicd will remember your wpa settings including pw and will auto-connect a t bootup15:40
tsimpsonI thought it was just another "remember my settings" app15:40
BluesKajs2r, but you have to set it up initially of course15:41

Delano-394980501Linux isn't above criticism18:34
emmanuel_Delano-394980501: haha well that's possible. Anyway, so far the ux has been better than other desktops I tried.18:34
emmanuel_I have heard that kde is many times a playgound for developers and hence the quality of the apps is not always the best18:35
emmanuel_but, I don't know, I found a number of kde apps superior to, say, gnome ones18:35
Delano-394980501Hmmm, I disagree18:35
Delano-394980501I find KDE far more stable and developed18:36
emmanuel_for example, I conside k3b the best linux cd burning app out there18:36
Delano-394980501Ditto18:36
Delano-394980501It's certainly better than that brasero rubbish18:36
emmanuel_twitter clients are maybe not the best example to cite but the only usable twitter client I found for linux is a qt based one, choqok18:37
Delano-394980501One of Linux's greatest desktop weaknesses is its poor selection of audio players18:37
Delano-394980501Despite the praise fanboys heap upon them, Amarok, Banshee, Audacious, etc, are absolutely rubbish18:38
ThreepwoodAmarok (1.x) rocks ! :)18:38
emmanuel_well there you have a point. I found the best possible setup for playing audio is 1) a bash console plus mplayer :) 2) mpd with a decent frontend like ario18:38
Delano-394980501Bloated, in-your-face with support for nonsense like last.fm but lacking even basic audio enhancement functionality, like equalizers18:38
emmanuel_slightly leaning to 2)18:38
emmanuel_Delano-394980501: lack of audio equalizers sounds like the fault of alsa. Alsa does not make it easy with sounds effects18:39
dillonamarok is hands down the best media player i have ever used18:39
Delano-394980501emmanuel_, I've resorted to using AIMP (Russian freeware but closed source) via WINE18:39
emmanuel_dillon: does amarok support mpd ?18:40
dillonwhats that18:40
emmanuel_Delano-394980501: wow you use wine for your media player? I thought that using mplayer for playing mp3 was overkill haha18:40
emmanuel_dillon: mpd is a music server for linux. It builds a database of all your mp3s and then uses different bacnkends for playing them (e.g. alsa). There are a lot of different frontends for selecting the themes and building playlists18:41
Delano-394980501emma, AIMP is compact, has a graphic equalizer (with a dozen presents), reverb, flanger and pitch/tempo bender; it's compact, skinnable, has an awesome search feature, etc18:41
Delano-394980501That's what an audio player *should* be18:42
emmanuel_dillon: http://mpd.wikia.com/wiki/Music_Player_Daemon_Wiki18:42
Delano-394980501Not a screen-wide app that wants you to connect to last.fm18:42
rjayis 9.10 a netbook remix upgrade or a completely new ubuntu upgrade?18:42
dillonyou know you can disable last.fm support in the setting18:42
dillonsettings*18:43
emmanuel_well I always complain about lack of equalizer but when I get one I hardly ever use it. The feature that I really miss is volume normalization.18:43
Delano-394980501dillon, yes but that's not my point... my point is, the authors are severely misguided if their priority in an audio player is internet functionality over sound quality18:43
dilloni see your point18:44
Delano-394980501emmanuel_, that too18:44
emmanuel_rjay: 9;10 comes in various editions afaik, one of that versions is the netbook remix one.18:44
Delano-394980501On the opposite end of the scale is XMMS18:45
Delano-394980501It's more along the lines of what I like, but it seems really primitive these days18:45
Delano-394980501And before you say it, yes, I tried audacious :o)18:45
Delano-394980501It's... bad.18:45
Delano-394980501It crashes if you try to load a large directory.18:45
emmanuel_btw, anoter great kde app: quassel.18:46
dillonanother one for the list, digiKam18:47
emmaDelano-394980501: huh? What about AIMP?18:49
tsimpsonemma: he was talking to emmanuel_, bad nick-completion I guess18:50
emmaOh okay :) no worries. It sounded interesting anyway :)18:51
emmanuel_emma: try quassel :)18:51
emmaI thought maybe it's like a linux version of winamp. I think that would be cool.18:51
Delano-394980501emma, AIMP is better than winamp, imho18:52
Axanonemma: audacious is like winamp for linux18:53
alebocohi all. is it possible, using kmail filters, to stop outgoing e-mails to be sent, if infected? i don't seem to find an how-to on the web.18:53
BluesKajDelano-394980501, that's a windows amp and VLC does a very good job as an alternative open source media player , using a media player with wine is extreme18:54
BluesKajamp=app18:54
emmaAxanon: okay cool i will try it :)18:55
Delano-394980501BluesKaj, VLC doesn't have the functionality I want either18:55
Delano-394980501BluesKaj, and yeah, it is extreme, but when the native Linux choices are so shoddy, it's fine18:55
emmain my opinion linux is pretty rich in media player options at least.18:56
emmaamarok is widely praised.18:56
Delano-394980501No, not really18:56
BluesKajhere we go with the functionality BS , that word is so overused and it means practically nothing18:56
Delano-394980501Amarok is bloated and primitive18:56
Delano-394980501BluesKaj, I'm sorry if you're offended by criticism of Linux apps, but they won't improve otherwise18:57
BluesKajDelano-394980501, if you want totroll , go elsewhere18:57
emmaDelano-394980501: well Amarok is open source so you could make it better instead of just complaining :)18:57
Delano-394980501Open source doesn't make an app better :op18:57
Delano-394980501But, yes18:57
Delano-394980501I'll suggest tips to the Amarok developers18:57
BluesKajthen join #amarok18:58

Delano-394980501Really18:58
Delano-394980501I love Linux18:58
emmaDelano-394980501: troll or not, this isn't really a kubuntu support issue is it?18:58
Delano-394980501But people's attitudes in the community need serious adjustment18:58
Delano-394980501emma, good point :o)18:58
BluesKajDelano-394980501, when you promote windows apps in here it does18:58
Delano-394980501I'm not promoting the app, I'm promoting its functionality :o)18:59
BluesKajfunctionality , man ppl like to use that word when they can't tell us what's really wrong :)18:59
emmaDelano-394980501: the only thing i find somewhat irritating about you is that your nick is so ridiculously long. Were the first 394980500 Delanos already registered?19:00
emmaIf your nick was just Delano or something I would like you better. That's all I'm saying.19:00

Mamarokok, could we please all go back to the aim of this channel, please? Support only19:01

jarlIs there anybody here with previleges to unmark a bug duplicate. If so please have a look at bug 31543719:02

tsimpsonjarl: anyone can change that19:03
jarlemma: ... The point is that the bug reporter of bug 315437 does not agree (and neither do I) that it is a duplicate of bug 28685819:04
jarltsimpson: Really? How?19:04
Mamarokjarl: get a launchpad account19:04
tsimpsonjarl: click the little yellow pencil icon by "Duplicate of bug #286858"19:04
tsimpsonyou do have to be logged in to LP19:04
jarltsimpson: Thanks, I just did...19:05
tsimpsonthe LP UI could do with some work, I know19:05
BluesKajyeah it's a rather stark environment with few clues how to find the fixes19:07
jarltsimpson: LP is not perfect (maybe even far from), but it is the best issue/bug tracker system I have ever used, and I have actually tried a couple.19:08
tsimpsonjarl: I'm talking about the user interface, not LP itself19:08
tsimpsonbut, yeah19:08
jarltsimpson: Regarding the LP UI, I agree, it renders horribly in konqueror.19:13

corigo2How can I upgrade my 9.04 install with KDE 4.3.3?19:28
Roastedso uh - how do I install themes in kde? :(19:31
Tm_TRoasted: which themes?19:32
RoastedTm_T - I'm on kde-look.org. I can install themes through the appearance window within KDE but it only changes the theme on my start menu and my panel. I want the theme to be across EVERYTHING like I see in screenshots. I have no idea what to do from here.19:33
RoastedIn Gnome I was used to the drag/drop of tar.gz... not sure what the process is in KDE19:33
Tm_TRoasted: hmm, it's not that easy, there's plasma themes, widget styles (changes appearance of applications) and there's window styles19:34
Tm_TRoasted: you have apparently already installed some plasma themes (:19:34
Roastedits not that easy? I thought that was the point of KDE :(19:34
Tm_TRoasted: well, there's no one big "theme" that covers everything, I'm afraid19:34
Roastedlets put it this way19:35
Roastedhttp://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Skulpture?content=8612519:35
RoastedI want that like you see in the top screen shot. How do I do it?19:35
Tm_TRoasted: that item (Skulpture 0.2.219:36
Tm_Tbah19:36
Tm_TRoasted: that item (Skulpture 0.2.2) is window decoration, aka window style19:36
pingusgood night to all19:36
RoastedOkay, well I have the tar.gz of it. How can I apply it?19:36
Tm_TRoasted: it doesn't change anything else than the window borders19:36
Tm_TRoasted: untar it, inside of it should be README file19:37
RoastedI'm failing to understand what's the point of themes then...19:37
datenshiRoasted: sudo apt-get install kde-style-skulpture kwin-style-skulpture19:37
pingusthemes for window decorstor you mean?19:37
Roastedthemes in general.19:37
Tm_Tdatenshi: he, I knew it's there somewhere already19:37
RoastedI don't mean to be all negative but in gnome... I drag... and drop... bam. Done. Over. Installed. Applied.19:37
pingusits like skins under Windows19:37
corigo2How can I upgrade my 9.04 install to KDE 4.3.3?19:37
RoastedI'm loving KDE but something simple like this I didn't expect to be a headache.19:38
Tm_TRoasted: yup, it's totally different thing in KDE19:38
Roastedbut KDE is easy, right?19:38
pingusquite easy19:39
Roastedokay, so.... :) ... lets see how we can install themes then like in that screenshot :)19:39
tsimpsonthemes are separate because you have have one preference for window decorations, one for plasma style, one for icons, etc19:39
tsimpsonmix and match19:39
Tm_Ttsimpson: and widget & window styles are binary stuff, not just bitmaps19:40
Roastedokay, that's fine. But I dont even know how to get this hizzy installed to begin mix and matching19:40
Tm_T2137.25 < datenshi> Roasted: sudo apt-get install kde-style-skulpture kwin-style-skulpture19:40
Roastedwow I cant even figure uot how to unzip this tarball. quick extract is grayed out.19:40
tsimpsonthere is deKorator that basically lets you just give it a load of pixmaps19:40
RoastedTm_T okay so I install that, but what if I don't want that theme? What if I want to install another on KDE Look? Is there another crazy command like that to install that one too?19:41
RoastedTm_T the readme only has basic info about the project in it, fyi19:41
Tm_TRoasted: hmm, INSTALL file then?19:42
Roastedooo yeah I see it19:42
Roastedquestion19:42
Roastedin Gnome I found an add-on package in synaptic which, whenever Ir ight clicked a file, would allow me to run it as administrator (root) without having to go to the GUI19:42
Tm_TRoasted: anyway, that whacky command mentioned above is to install two packages, you can use kpackagekit for it too19:42
Roastedis there something like that in dolphin?19:42
Roastedterminal*******************19:43
Roastednot gUI19:43
tsimpsonuse kpackagekit then19:43
tsimpsonkmenu -> System -> KPackageKit (Software Management)19:43
Roastedonce I install this theme - can I delete the unzipped folder? Or does it need the folder to exist o work?19:43
Roastedinstall failed - need CMake 2.4 or newer and C++ compiler 4.1 or newer.19:44
Tm_TRoasted: if you install it from repositories, using kpackagekit that is, you don't need that package from site at all in firstplace19:44
RoastedTm_T - so theres themes in the repos?19:44
Tm_TRoasted: there is19:44
Roastedwhat - really?19:45
Roastedokay - installed19:45
Roastednow to apply them...19:45
Roastedso I have to apply them in different pieces?19:45
Tm_Tyes19:46
Roastedwell, I got the theme, but everything is still sky blue in color... I dont have the darkish gray theme going on19:46
Roastedcancel that19:46
Roastedfixed19:47
Roastedman there are a lot of pieces to it19:47
Roastedso wait, this is still like gnome though. In gnome I could take pieces of each theme and customize them into 119:47
Roastedwait I get itttttttttttt. When you apply the theme through the desktop settings (right click desktop - appearance settings - select theme) I ONLY apply the core theme and not the other gadets around it19:48
mostafa_hey there how can I set a shortcut key on my terminal?19:49

nick_hRoasted: you want plasmoids21:08
nick_hcontrast: ah. thanks21:08

nick_hRoasted: find the "cashew" (http://is.gd/54g9Z) on your desktop, and click on it. it's usually in the top-right corner21:09

Roastedbut youre also on 4.3.221:35
contrastzerq: You might try the Gtk frontend to NetworkManager - sudo apt-get install network-manager-gnome; killall -15 knetworkmanager; nm-applet &21:35
RoastedIm on 4.2.221:35
ErtheI'm on 4.3.221:36
contrastzerq: I've generally had better luck with it than the KDE one, sadly. : \21:36
ErtheTry using that as your sources.list file in /etc/apt21:36
ErtheUpdate your sources and try again.21:36
zerqcontrast: hmm.. yeah I'm not impressed with the KDE one so far, but I like other stuff about KDE.. :/21:36
Erthe(Or update to KDE 4.3.2 first actually)21:36
zerqcontrast: I'll give that a try21:36
Roastederthe - I REALLY dont wnat to have to reinstall Kubuntu though :(21:36
Roastedand theres no memory feature in system monitor in the widgets21:37
Roastedjust temp/proc/hdd/network/hardware info21:37
Erthehttp://www.kubuntu.org/new/kde-4.3.221:38
RoastedGAH21:38
Roastedwhat is this cannot open firefox BS21:38
ErtheI'll bbiab, need to go meet with my lawyer.21:38
contrastzerq: Same here. KDE's package management apps pale in comparison to GNOME's as well. Fortunately, you can swap them out without much hassle.21:38
contrast!wfm21:38
ubottuCommon Sense: Just because you can, does not mean you should (and especially recommend to others). Think before you do. "Works for me" does not mean it is ok. The latest version of everything is not always useful if you aim for stability. Please see http://geekosophical.net/random/worksforme/21:38
Roastedso I just added the repo for the 4.3.2 backports - do I just apt-get update/upgrade?21:39
contrastRoasted: Correct.21:40
tsimpsonyeah, you just update the system normally21:40
tsimpsonbut you probably want to make sure you have kubuntu-desktop installed21:40
Roastedno pubkey, GPG error21:40
Roastedjust like last time...21:41
tsimpsonhttp://www.kubuntu.org/faq/PPA-keys21:41
Roastedk, I got them and ran apt-get update. No errors.21:42
RoastedNow what - upgrade, or just reboot?21:42
tsimpsonI just do "sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 8AC93F7A"21:42
tsimpsonthen update and logout/in again21:42
Roastedk, brb21:43
Roastedthanks21:43
Roastedlogged out and back in - still 4.2.221:43
Roastedreboot or apt-get upgrade required?21:43
tsimpsonRoasted: add the PPA, then do "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"21:45
Roastedoh, okay, I thought I just needed to add the ppa and update21:45
tsimpsonthen logout/in and you should be in 4.3.221:45
Roastedk, running now21:45
tsimpson"update" just updates the package list, nothing else21:45
RoastedI appreciate it bro21:45
Roastedhey would ya happen to know whats up with my firefox thing?21:45
tsimpsonwhat "firefox thing"?21:46
Roastedwell earlier you and erthe were posting links to me21:46
Roastedwait...21:46
Roastedhold that htought...21:46
Roastedwww.pastebin.com21:46
Roastedgrrrr21:46
Roastedwhenever I'd right cl ick a link and hit open in web borwser, it would error out and say cannot find firefox - yet Id be actively using firefox just fine at the time.21:47
Roastedcancel that - just fixed it. :)21:47
Roasteddo you know if its possible to make my K menu bigger?21:48
Alarmhello i got a few simple questions. the first one is : how do i make the windows not to go behind the taskbar ? everytime i maximize a window it is going behind the taskbar as well and i cant find the setting the taskbar not to cover the windows21:49
tsimpsonRoasted: if you mean kickoff you can resize it like a window, click on the edge and drag to resize21:49
Roastedmy gosh I feel stupid now21:50
Roastedthanks bro :P21:50
Roastedcan I change the K icon, perhaps?21:50
tsimpsonnot without renaming the icon in the filesystem and replacing it21:51
Roastedshucks :(21:51
Roastedthe punisher skull would look pretty neato right there21:51
tsimpsonAlarm: right click the panel -> panel options -> panel settings -> more settings21:52
Alarmfound :)21:52
Alarmyeap : always visible21:52
Alarmsecond question is why applications menus (like firefox , xchat) have a bigger font than the kde windows (like dolphin) ?21:53
tsimpsonbecause GTK is evil21:54
tsimpsonAlarm: you can change that from System Settings -> Appearance -> GTK+ Appearance21:55
tsimpsonyou probably want to choose a specific font, as GTK seems to add 10px to them...21:55
Tm_TAlarm: because gtk-apps (including whole gnome) doesn't follow your dpi at all21:55
Alarmi did, use KDE font in GTK applications (and restarted) but still the fonts seem bigger21:55
tsimpsonlike I said, GTK is evil21:56
Alarm:)21:56
Reformer81When using photorec, is it possible to specify a minimum filesize to recover?22:00
zerqoh man don't get me started on the font size snafu between GTK and KDE.. I installed kubuntu over top of normal ubuntu and now GNOME desktop fonts are completely fubar22:00
zerqhalf the fonts are gigantic, the rest are unreadably tiny22:00
Roastedzerq - what apps are unreadably tiny?22:01
Roastedthunderbird? xchat?22:01
zerqanything GTK based22:01
Roastedyeah22:01
Roastedtry this22:01
Roasteduhhh lemme think22:01
RoastedI just did a fix for that22:01
Roastedsystem settings - appearance - fonts - force fonts dpi - 96 dpi22:02
zerqRoasted: cool, will try that22:02
RoastedI just got hooked on kde like 3 nights ago, fricken loving it, yet thunderbird and xchat were so damn small... that fixed it22:02
Roastedjust gotta close the apps and reopen after you do that22:02
Roastedis kino gtk based? Or is that a kde app?22:03
Roastednevermind - google says its gtk22:04
Roastedwhats a good kde video editing app?22:04
