OxDeadC0deluxx see #7 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=126051809:00
OxDeadC0deluux even* ^^09:01

But X is stuck with nivdiafb and at resolution of 800x600. kde setting doesn't show anyother available res. Well yes but lower than 800x600. OxDeadC0desudo Xorg -configure09:07
d9500luux, open kpackage or synaptic (whichever you use) and check if nvidia-glx shows as installed. if it does, then you should try dropping to terminal and use the command nvidia-xconfig.09:07
d9500or Xorg -configure if nivida's driver isn't installed.09:07
d9500luux, note that either of those has to be run from a terminal, without X running, you can't just use a terminal emulator like konsole09:08
luuxwhy is no longer created??09:08
d9500luux, X server doesn't really need it any more if you are using in-kernel driver, and don't have a fancy monitor setup.09:09
tsimpsonbecause X is moving towards auto-detecting hardware capabilities09:09
d9500if you're using binary drivers (nivida or fglrx) or trying to do a multi-monitor config, you might need the xorg.conf09:09
* luux shudders at the thought.09:09
d9500nvidia*09:10
luuxgawd, that's   a hell'uv ambitious task09:10
luuxa lot of ppl got issues with synaptics and what not09:11
d9500luux, true, but while seasoned *nix users might appreciate the flexibility that tweaking a hundred different options in xorg.conf gives them, new users would probably prefer autodetection, at least if it works for most people. and being newbie-friendly is the direction that some distros, the buntus specifically, are going.09:12
d9500and personally, I think it's about time, but that's another discussion, maybe for offtopic09:12

shadeslayerseicherlbob: hmmm... no idea then,sorry14:10
franarzai do not recommend to edit that file manually.. you can edit GRUB2 properties by editing /etc/default/grub file, and using the command sudo update-grub to generate the new grub.cfg :)14:11
c3lfranarza, still thats not where you edit the order of boot alternatives14:12
BluesKajfranarza, the symbol @ won't highlight the nick on irc , just type the nick , highlighting is enabled by default on irc14:13
franarzaBluesKaj thanks!14:13

ubottuc3l: GRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager in Karmic. For more information and troubleshooting on GRUB2 please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Grub214:15

shadeslayerfranarza: yeah, you need to update the MBR14:18
c3lfranarza, the /boot/grub/grub.cfg tells me not to edit it. so where do I edit the order  of the boot alternative list?14:19
shadeslayerc3l: /etc/default/grub.cfg14:19
c3lshadeslayer, that file does not exist!14:20
franarzadatensh: yes, already did14:20
=== hebb is now known as Navarre
shadeslayerc3l: /etc/default/grub14:21
franarzac3l: that's the file you must edit if you want to change something.. but if you use update-grub command every change will be deleted.. and overwrited by the new grub.cfg14:21
c3lshadeslayer, cheched that file, it does not contain the list of boot alternatives14:22

franarzac3l editing /boot/grub.d/grub.cfg is what you have to do.. but i strongly do not recommend it.. unless you're an experienced user..14:23

shadeslayerc3l: the list will be back to its original version whenever a new kernel is found14:27
c3lshadeslayer, so i just have to update my changes when the kernel updates, not that hard.. =)14:28
franarzac3l nothing.. but as shadeslayer said.. it will be back to its original version whenever a new kernel or a MBR update comand..14:28

BluesKajfranarza, updating-grub is just that , no need to edit afterwards14:32
BluesKajfranarza, you edit grub , then you update-grub , not the reverse14:33
franarzaBluesKaj  look, i've edited my /etc/default/grub file, to make it boot the default kernel after 0 seconds. but it doesn't boot it.. it just hangs there until i press enter manually..14:33

emmamaybe someone could give me a tip on how amarok is supposed to work? I have a usb with mp3's on it, amarok sees the USB and it sees the mp3, but it doesn't start playing the track?   Is there something I'm missing?19:33
Mamarokwell, you need to drag it to the playlist first19:34
c3li cant get compiz with the cube to work (no other compiz setting works either). I have enabled kde compatibility19:35
Mamarokemma: ^19:35
emmaahh you drag it to the playlist.. i thought you clicked on it.19:35
Mamarokemma: you can alos double click on it, same effect19:35
Mamarokalso*19:35
Mamarokc3l: I don't know what KDE compatibility you mean, but can you enable compositing in systemsettings -> Desktop -> Desktop effects?19:36
emmaMamarok: double clicking on it didn't do anything. Also when i try to drag it anywhere there's a red ciclr with a line through it.19:36
c3lMamarok, compositing is enabled19:36
Mamarokemma: which version of Amarok do you use?19:37
c3lhm wait, kde has got a cube not depending on compiz?19:37
emmaMamarok: which ever version happens to be in Kubuntu 9.1019:37
Mamarokc3l: well, the try Ctrl+F11 and the arrow keys19:37
emmaMamarok: looks like 2.2.019:37
Mamarokc3l: it doesn't use Compiz but Kwin, Desktop effects are integrated19:38
c3lctrl + f11 is nothing19:38
Mamarokemma: can you use your player in MTP mode also?19:38
c3lMamarok, oh so I can just remove compiz then19:38
Mamarokc3l: yes, normally you don't need it19:38
emmaMamarok: what's MTP mode?19:38
Mamarokc3l: check in the Tab "All effects" if the cube is actually a selected effect19:39
Mamarokemma: some player allow different connection lodes, like USB and MTP, or UMS19:39
Mamarokmodes*19:39
emmaMamarok: this is just an external hard drive, it just connects through USB, but I have a directory with music on it.19:40
Mamarokoh, so you actually access it through the files browser, what does a right click show?19:40
emmayes i'm just accessing files on my system.19:41
emmalet me see.19:41
=== JulCes_ is now known as JulCes

Mamarokuse "Add to playlist"19:42
emmaMamarok: when i click on "Add to Playlist" the option menu goes away but nothing else changes.19:43
Mamarokand you have nothing showing up in the Playlist at all?19:43
Mamarokthat is strange19:43
emmaNothing.19:43
Mamarokemma: you can try upgrading to 2.2.1, it's in the Kubuntu backports PPA, see the topic19:44
emmaIt may be relevant that Kubuntu is running in VirtualBox here, but I have gotten other documents off of this external hard drive from inside of Kubuntu. For example I opened a text file and a pdf, no problem.19:44
Mamarokbut let me try here, I have an external disk with music, too19:44
Mamarokthat could indeed be a problem then19:44
emmaBut i have gotten other stuff off of this external drive with other applications.19:45
emmaso it's not as though kubuntu doesn't know it's there and it *is* seeing the files in the file browser part of amarok19:45
MamarokI would need to ask a dev, but it's Saturday night here, not much chance to get one, try asking in #amarok eventually19:45
emmaOkay :)19:45
Mamarokemma: no, but Amarok needs to be able to access the device directly, that could be the problem19:46
emmaMamarok: maybe it's because I don't have the w32 codecs installed.19:48
emmaMamarok: I think that's what it is! I just successfully opened and played a flac that's on this same external drive.19:49
Mamarokhm, w32 codecs are not necessary, but the libxine1-ffmpeg are, for mp319:51
Mamarokanyway, you should be able to drag trakcs to the playlist even without the codecs19:51
MamaroktrackS*, sorry19:51
emmait did open a flac on the same external drive.19:52
emmabut not the mp3s won't even acknowledge they exist.19:52
emmamaybe the libxine1-ffmpeg is in the kubuntu-restricted-extras19:53
Mamarokemma: as I said, you should be able to drag those to the playlist, even without codecs installed, they would just not play, of course19:54
Mamarokyes, it is19:54
Roastedhey guys - how do I access my samba (kubuntu) file server? I can hit it with my mac and windows machines but not my kubuntu laptop...20:06
Peace-Roasted: 1 second20:06
Peace-Roasted: http://nowardev.wordpress.com/2009/05/05/kubuntu-904-windows-share-with-samba/20:07
RoastedPeace- this is to set up a file server? Or to connect to one?20:07
Peace-Roasted: that article is to set up a samba server windows-kubuntu20:10
Peace-if you need kubuntu-kubuntu you need to read nfs20:10
Peace-!nfs20:10
ubottunfs is the network file system. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo for information on installing and configuring NFS.20:10
RoastedPeace- I already have a file server. I can connect to it with Ubuntu, Mac OSX, XP, Vista, and 7, but I cannot seem to figure out how to connect to it in Kubuntu.20:10
Peace-yep yoi need of nfs20:11
Roastedwhy do I need nfs when I have samba? I didnt have nfs on ubuntu and it worked.20:11
BluesKajPeace-, Roasted , nfs is really slow on karmic , almost broken , try openssh instead20:11
bipolarPeace-, Roasted, you can mount samba shares on kubuntu20:12
Roastedbipolar - yes! That's exactly what I'm trying to do.20:12
Peace-BluesKaj: lool nice to know it's broken on a stable release20:12
RoastedHow do I do it in Kubuntu?20:12
Roastedblueskaj - Im not on karmic.20:12
RoastedIm on jaunty20:12
BluesKajsamba is for connecting to windows , use ssh for linux to linux20:12
bipolarI don't use it myself, so I don't know the details.20:12
Roastedblueskaj -  you can connect to samba shares on linux, though.20:12
Roastedwhich is exactly what I'm trying to do20:12
RoastedI have a samba file server, which handles linux/mac/and windows alike.20:13
RoastedI dont need nfs and openssh and this and that, I have samba. It works. I just dont know how to connect to it with kubuntu20:13
RoastedI just started on kde not long ago so I dont really know where Im to hit my server at to mount the shares20:13
bipolarRoasted: are these perminant mounts or per user?20:13
BluesKajI use samba for linux to windows shares , ssh for linux to linux20:13
Roastedbipolar - per user20:13
Roastedbipolar - I just use it so I can hit my home directory on my main computer since my laptop doesnt have much hdd space20:13
Roastedthat way I can network my files on my LAN anywhere in thehouse (which is really nice to have in the garage)20:14
bipolarRoasted: hmm... not sure how to go about that. I would start searching for mounting samba share in linux.20:14
BluesKajstill haven't bothered with vista to linux tho20:14
Roastedbipolar - hmm, yeah. Id ont know, it sfrustrating cause I know how to doit in gnome land but not kde land.20:14
RoastedI find the network folder and hit "samba shares" which is listed ther but nothing comes up20:14
bipolarRoasted: KDE/Gnome is irrelevant, I was thinking you wanted something more robust.... I think konq can do it with smb:\\20:15
Roastedbipolar - that's exactly what I thought. BUT it works in gnome, yet KDE. *shrug*20:16
bipolarRoasted: but if you just want access to your home directory on the server, you might as well just bypass samba and use fish:\\20:16
RoastedI... have... samba....20:16
Roastedsamba... works...20:16
bipolarI thought you were going to use the samba mount AS your home directory. thats a differnt animal20:16
emmaMamarok: I got it working by installing the w32codecs and then restarting the machine.20:16
RoastedI just dont know how to connect to it20:16
Roastedno20:16
BluesKajRoasted, linux to windows shares with smbclient is a good method using konq or dolphin20:17
Roastedsamba on my desktop (kubuntu) has my home directory as the path for "jason" (me)20:17
Roastedon windows, if I \\Area51, log in, I see my shares for all of the users.20:17

bipolardid you try smb://hostmame/ or just smb:/20:21
Roastedsmb://area5120:21
BluesKajwell, from vista to linux isn't so easy, Roasted20:21
Roastedwhcih is my samba server hostname20:21
bipolarRoasted: try adding the trailing slash20:21
Roastedblueskaj - what? I have vista working. I have 7 working. I have xp working. EVERYTHING can connect to my samba server. Everything. EXCEPT Kubuntu.20:21
RoastedI KNOW its just the fact I statred on kubuntu recently, though20:22
Roastedbipolar - it auto added the trailing slash and still errored out20:22
bipolarRoasted:make sure you can ping that hostname.20:22
Roastedbipolar - this is linux to linux, man. You cant ping hostnames unless you add them to the /etc/hosts file20:22
Roastedubuntu to ubuntu cannot ping hostnames, yet they work fine with samba20:22
bipolarRoasted: haha...20:22
bipolarRoasted: then replace the hostname with it's ip address20:23
RoastedI did20:23
Roasteddidnt work20:23
Roastedsee why I'm about to throw this thing out the window now?20:23

Roastedyou... dont?20:23
Roastedlet me reiterate20:23
BluesKajRoasted, hmm, use samba , linux to linux doesn't work here20:23

NewbeeRoasted: have you tried to mount your share with cifs?20:25
Roastedblueskaj, let me reiterate, ubuntu to ubuntu with samba...... WORKS. But Kubuntu is being a bitch. I'm sorry, I'm using Samba. My Samba setup works. It's something with trying to get my Kubuntu laptop to recognize it. That's where I'm at.20:25
BluesKajRoasted, explain everything works except kubuntu ... it's ambiguous20:25
RoastedI'm not using SSH. I'm not using NFS.20:25
Roastedblueskaj - tell me about it, but that's what I'm seeing20:25
RoastedGuys, keep in mind, I dual boot my main rig with Ubuntu and Kubuntu. I have the file server services (samba) on each partition.20:25
RoastedALL systems can hit BOTH ubuntu and kubuntus file server perfectly.20:25
RoastedExcept my kubuntu laptop...20:25
bipolarless talking, more troubleshooting20:25
Roastedjust keep in mind, I'm using samba, I don't need to hear about ssh or anything else because it's not an option20:26
bipolarRoasted: yes, it is an option, but you're being bullheaded about it. try 'fish://ip-of-server' and see if you can connect.20:26
Roastedbipolar - So are you telling me Kubuntu has a known issue with connecting with a Samba server?20:27
BluesKajRoasted, one more question , can you r and w ubuntu shares from your windows boxes ?20:27
bipolarRoasted: just. try. it.20:27
Roastedblueskaj - each user has different permissions. I use samba as a backup service for the windows boxes. So yes, users can r/w to their shares, but ONLY their shares.20:28
bipolarRoasted: I have a samba server here on my network and can connect to it just fine with smb:/20:28
Roastedbipolar - fish with the IP brings up a login box, but each time I log in, it just comes back asking for the PW again as if it failed.20:28
Roastedbipolar - are you on kubuntu when connecting to your samba server?20:28
Mamarokemma: nice :)20:29

BluesKajbipolar, can you rw linux shares from vista ..if so , how ? vista doesn't seem to see my linux shares20:30

Roastedbipolar - I dont know man, this is really starting to piss me off20:31

BluesKajbipolar, no need to get huffy , just asked a question20:31
bipolarRoasted: you'll never figure it out if you're pissed off20:31

Roasted:(20:31
Roastedubuntu connects fine to it20:32
bipolarBluesKaj: that wasn't huffy.... emotions don't translate well over irc20:32
Roastedeven VISTA connects fine to it20:32
bipolarRoasted: none of that data is relevant other then to show the samba server is running.20:32
Roastedbipolar - it is relevant, because it shows all different platforms, including linux, can connect to it.20:32
Roastedyet my kubuntu laptop cant20:32
Roastedwhat am I doing wrong?20:32
bipolarRoasted: do you have the 'smbclient' package installed?20:33
BluesKajno matter I guess, wife doesn't bother with my linux boxes anyway :)20:33
Roastedbipolar - on my laptop? I know I installed samba on my laptop... let me check if smbclient is installed...20:33
bipolarRoasted: on the laptop you're trying to connect from20:34
Roastedinstalling now20:35
