owen1How to uninstall totem? i have 4 related packages - libtotem-plparser12, totem-common, totem-gstreamer, totem-plugins.  i still want to use mplayer though.03:07
owen1i think it's totem-gstreamer03:08
jarsudo apt-get --purge remove totem ?03:09
owen1jar: even if i can't see totem in dpkg/03:09
owen1+03:09
owen1?03:09
jarBeg pardon?03:09
jarThe following packages will be REMOVED:03:10
jar  totem* totem-gstreamer* totem-mozilla* totem-plugins*03:10
jar0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 4 to remove and 0 not upgraded.03:10
jarSeems to work for me.03:10
owen1jar: interesting. thanks03:10
jarnp03:10
owen1i'll look for the aptitude equivalent for this (since i only use aptitude)03:13
jarWhy?03:13
jarhttp://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/aptitude03:14
jarNow that autoremove is in apt, they're essentially the same thing.03:14
owen1jar: i heard that aptitude is doing a better job of handeling dependencies.03:14
owen1let me read your link03:14
jarThat used to be the case.03:14
jarEver since Edgy apt has been on part with aptitutde.03:15
owen1ok, read it. so do u ever used aptitude?03:18
owen1i want to stick to one of them if possible.03:19
owen1i used to do install/remove/show/search all with aptitude.03:19
owen1jar: after reading the link you sent, can i assume that sudo apt-get autoremove app == sudo aptitude remove app +03:25
owen1?03:26
jaroh, sorry owen103:29
jari was away03:29
jarI use apt exclusively03:29
jarYes, apt-get autoremove discards old dependencies03:29
owen1jar: do u ever use remove? why not using autoremove all the time?03:30
jarI do.03:30
jarI use --purge autoremove03:31
owen1i just looked at the man page for aptitude and couldn't find the difference between remove and purge03:32
danielsevignyDoes anyone know how to install both the 32bit and the 64bit version of python side by side in Karmic 64?03:32
owen1and when running 'sudo aptitude purge totem' nothing was removed.03:32
jarI'm not sure if aptitutde supports purge03:33
jarI don't use it03:33
jardanielsevigny, No idea - all my computers run in 32bit mode.03:33

sayyestolifeGreetings.08:33
sayyestolifeI currently have a setup with one hard drive which has windows vista as it's main OS and then a ubuntu installation (done via Wubi). And now I'd like to get rid of the windows OS entirely. Would it be fairly easy to "reinstall" xubuntu via my current ubuntu installation (and also overwrite the windows part etc)?08:35
TheSheepno08:38
TheSheepwubi installs inside the windows partition08:39
sayyestolifeOh, so wubi is "locked" inside the Windows partition?08:41
Balsaqhiya Sysi!08:44

jozefkhello. my question is if I can have Gimp, Inkscape, Scribus and apps like that on Xubuntu?09:33
TheSheepyes09:34
TheSheepyou can install anything from ubuntu repositories09:34
jozefkthat sounds great09:35
jozefkhow painful it upgrading from one release to another one?09:42
TheSheep!upgrade09:46
ubottuFor upgrading, see the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes - see also http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading09:46
jozefkinstructions? i didn't ask for instructions but i asked how painful it is to upgrade your system09:48
TheSheepyou can read the instructions and have an idea on how painful it is09:49
TheSheepI don't feel qualified to assess the pain level for your particular case09:49
Balsaqthere is no pain whatsoever09:50
TheSheepsee how it varies? :)09:50
Balsaqi sticking with 9.04 though09:51
jozefk:)09:52
Balsaqwhen the updates come in, it offers the upgrade right there...no need to look for it, it comes too you.09:52
jozefkeven if there is it's only twice a year so not that big problem09:53
jozefkit comes to you and it works?09:55
Balsaqyup09:55
Balsaqare you getting the updates regularly?09:56
Balsaqwhen you click to accept the updates you will see a box pop up that show the updates being downloaded into your machine...near the top of that box it will offer you to click for the next edition(upgrade)...l just saw it when i accepted an update awhile ago.09:58
jozefkm8 i am thinking to try Xubuntu. used Arch Linux for a year or so. before that Debian. Before Debian, SuSE10:01
Balsaqi have tried ubuntu, linux mint, suse, pclinuxos, xubuntu, puppylinux and fedora and xubuntu is the best10:03
Balsaqlinux mint may be the easiest though10:03
jozefkthat's why I'm here :)10:05
Balsaqi am interested in arch10:06
Balsaqlooks like a lot of work though10:06
jozefkarch is good. but I just got tired of fixing issues after each upgrade10:07
jozefkthat's why I asked those questions about xubuntu upgrade10:07
Balsaqi started aith 8.10 and took 9.04 and everything worked10:08
Balsaqbut i have heard a few people complain10:08
Balsaqbut even when i installed xubuntu the 1st time everything worked..printer sound all of it10:09
jozefkright now i'm typing this from PC-BSD.  I like it but the lack of drivers is an issue. don't have sound. using vesa for graphic :10:10
jozefk:P10:10
Balsaqmy in laws have a brand new gateway computer...they came over and ran my xubuntu computer and said it was faster, then i told them i was on a 6 year old   2.4 single core with 512rdram...10:12
jozefk:)10:12
Balsaqthey are on a dual core with 3 gigs or ram and vista10:12
Balsaqthey were shocked10:13
jozefkvista is *crap*10:13
jozefkbut win7 is good10:13
Balsaqmy xp pro computers run good10:13
jozefk7 is better than xp10:14
Sysiany windows haven't been better for me than xubuntu10:14
jozefkyesterday i replaced xp with 710:14
jozefkdoing dual boot10:14
SahkolihaaI was unimpressed with 7.10:14
jozefkany windows is not better than any linux, for me10:14
SahkolihaaEspecially when it told me to activate again after changing my graphics card. That point I simply said "stuff it" and completely switched to Linux.10:15
Balsaqi hope 7 is good but i must admit ive lost faith in windows10:15
SahkolihaaGave Ubuntu a try, then Ubuntu Studio, but found I was having too many issues with PulseAudio, so I switched to Xubuntu so I could stick to just ALSA.10:15
Balsaqif they dump xp support i will boot them out for good10:15
SahkolihaaAnd behold, all my sound issues vanished. :P10:15
Balsaqxubuntu is really special10:15
SahkolihaaI love how booting into Xubuntu with Compiz running only uses 140MiB RAM.10:16
SahkolihaaThat is simply amazing.10:16
jozefki got xubuntu last night. it's only 700MB10:16
jozefkor less10:16
jozefkat least i know it fits on 1 cd :)10:17
Balsaqoh yes 1 cd10:17
SahkolihaaI had to file a bug regarding xfce4-panel and Compiz though.10:17
SahkolihaaCompiz seems to make the panels switch positions at boot up.10:17
SahkolihaaThat's the only issue I have.10:17
jozefki don't really care about compiz and stuff. even in KDE I switch off all effects and stuff10:18
Balsaqi tried to what is compiz for?10:18
Balsaqwhat is compiz i meant10:18
SahkolihaaIt's an eye-candy window manager.10:18
Balsaqo10:18
SahkolihaaI have a 9800GT so Compiz has little to no impact on performance.10:19
Balsaqyeah thats not me10:19
SahkolihaaAnd - KDE. :(10:19
SahkolihaaCrashed too much for me.10:19
Balsaqi am a xfce man for sure10:19
jozefksome versions - yes10:19
Sysionly good thing in compiz are window selections10:19
Balsaqi like pure speed10:19
Sysixfce-opacities are soo candy :310:20
Balsaq3:)10:20
SahkolihaaI do like how light xfce is though.10:20
SahkolihaaI just wish the Xubuntu team would drop some of the GNome stuff and use xfce's software. :/10:20
Balsaqgotta sleep...later10:24
jozefkshall it always be free? I mean ubuntu/xubuntu?10:43
BitbuckTime for my flight.  Have a good day.11:17
Cyber_Akuma_2Hey guys, I have been googling but haven't had much luck, are is there any cd coverart I can download to print on my Xubuntu 9.10 cd?13:31
knomeCyber_Akuma_2, not really.13:32
Cyber_Akuma_2Heh, ok then, is there anyway I can download the logos/art resources for Ubuntu so I can try to (keyboard: try) make my own? The artwork resources page from the subuntu site just linked me to ubuntu logos and skins/themes for xubuntu13:33
Cyber_Akuma_2anywhere*13:33
Cyber_Akuma_2ARGH, sorry, im still waking up, I meant keyword, not keyboard13:34
psycho_oreoshttp://emonk.fi/open/xubuntu/9.10/Wallpaper/ <--- does these help?13:43
Cyber_Akuma_2Thanks, but they don't really help, oh well, ill continue trying to google for images, thanks.14:05
knomepsycho_oreos, please link to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Xubuntu/Artwork/Karmic14:05
psycho_oreosknome, o.O err ok, apologies14:05
knomepsycho_oreos, np. :)14:06
knomenot that it mattered a lot, but the first link probably is going to disappear someday14:07
Cyber_Akuma_2Heh, yeah, saw that one, as I said, it just seems to have themes and its more of a place for people to upload  art :)14:08
knomeCyber_Akuma_2, there is no official cover art for xubuntu.14:12
knomeCyber_Akuma_2, you might find some community stuff, though, but i haven't heard of those either.14:12
tpggood afternoon lads14:16
benchikhello19:27
benchikhow do i install wifi on xubuntu 9.10? i don't the wifi network icon and locator of wifi routers. i have dell inspiron 11z and i chose: broadcom b43 wireless driver ,in hardware drivers. please help19:28
benchikdo i need to loagout and llogin after driver installation?19:29
likemindead!ndiswrapper | benchik19:29
ubottubenchik: Wireless documentation, including how-to guides and troubleshooting information, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs19:29
likemindeadThose Broadcom chips can be a pain. :-\19:30
benchik:(19:30
likemindeadYeah. I usually toss 'em and get a cheap, well supported wifi card from eBay.19:31
likemindeadYou can make it work, though. It's just a bit of work.19:31
benchikthe guide is ubuntu oriented, while i run xubuntu. i guess the gui app is DE oriented. no?19:32
likemindeadIt's network-manager. Should be the same.19:33
benchikbut the xfce panel's network manager different from gnome's one, no?19:35
benchikbrb19:40
benchikhello20:36
jarhey20:36
benchiki have dell inspiron 11z. the screen brightness buttons show as if it changes, but the screen brightness (on battery) doesn't change20:37
jarhm20:38
jarweird20:38
dooglusI usually have a submenu in my rat menu called 'other' with all my WINE apps on it20:38
dooglushow can I get it back?20:38
dooglusbut occasionally (like now) the whole submenu is missing20:38
jardooglus, did a wine upgrade knock it out?20:38
dooglusjar: I don't think so.  today's upgrade only updated chromium and tzdata.20:39
jarhm20:39
jarwell menus are controlled by .desktop files, your wine apps are in your home20:39
dooglusI'm sure rebooting will fix it - the .desktop (or whatever) files will be fine20:40
dooglusbut I can't reboot right now20:40
benchikjar: the buttons i'm talking about are the keyboard buttons. and i get xubuntu response in notification windows. but the brightness itself doesn't change20:40
jarhm20:40
jarsounds like a kernel problem20:40
jaracpi20:41
jarMy brightness buttons work fine on my netbook20:41
dooglusmine do too20:41
benchikjar: suggestions of action?20:41
jarbenchik, hmm20:42
jarno clue really, the kernel is entirely up to the kernel developers20:42
jaryou could make a bug report and see what happens20:42
jarbenchik, you could also try a live disk of another distro or dual boot windows to see if it isn;t a hardware problem20:43
benchikon windows 7 it works fine20:44
jarThen I would try another live disk to see if it's supported in linux at all.20:45
jarlaptops are tricky thing20:45
jar+s20:45
jarsometimes the special buttons work20:45
jarsometimes.. they don't20:45
jarLike one or two of my buttons don't work in Linux20:45
jarbut id never use them anyways20:45
benchikwell. if i reboot the correct brightness (according AC/battery) is chosen. good enough i guess20:50
jarSounds like the driver isn't up to snuff20:50
jarnot surprising since most laptop manufacturers use custom hardware20:50
likemindeadYep. :-\20:51
benchikmy touchpad has gestures and some of them work out of the box. impressive20:53
benchikwell,  thanks guys20:55
benchikgood night20:55
benchik:)20:55
tpgAnyone here with the EEE PC 1005HA-H on Xubuntu? ^^21:24
jartpg, No - but feel free to ask the question.21:24
tpgjar, Not really a very important question at the moment, and I probably would find it at google. But im sort of wondering about the opinons with the laptop-xubuntu ^^ Im curious to the button functionality to turn off the touchpad oO21:25
jartpg, You should be able to.21:26
jarI run Xubuntu on my Toshiba netbook21:26
Sysii have 1005ha and xubu21:27
tpgjar, hmm I see. Im busy installing Xubuntu on my netbook right now21:27
Sysiby default disabling touchpad won't work21:28
tpgSysi, ah, I heard something about ¨eeecontrol¨ a very long time ago for this kind of thing, is that what I need, or maybe what you use?21:30
Sysii don't need that feature21:31
Sysineither have eeecontrol21:31
Sysii have default xubuntu and governor plugin, which is rather useless21:32
tpgSysi, great, I guess ill see if I`ll need that functionality or not when I have installed Xubuntu. Thanks ;)21:42
Sysii'd guess it's possible to get work21:43
Sysiif button is recognised21:43
=== sgallinger is now known as assssssss
tpgthis is weird, seems like when I try to install Xubuntu 9.10 on my 1005HA and try to run it with ¨Install Xubuntu¨ or ¨start without making any changes¨ it shows the xubuntu wallpaper thing after a while and then I get a black screen and the cursor seems as if its busy doing something... but its taking ages.... 30mins for sure22:11
m8thello, I read somewhere that the installations is ok with a 1.5GB hdd, but during the installation it failed with no space left with a 2GB hdd22:18
m8thttp://xubuntu.com/get it's written here, in minimum system requirements22:24
jarm8t, That can be read one of two ways.22:25
m8ti read it black on white :)22:25
jarBut you're right, it should be more clear that it uses more space during the install.22:25
jarIf an install requires 1.5 at the end, it's most certainly going to go over that during the install process.22:26
jarm8t, You might have better luck with Crunchbang or something without X1122:26
jar2GB is not enough for an desktop envrionment.22:27
m8ti installed from the desktop version, maybe its true for the alternate one22:27
geniiMight want to alter the APT::Archives::MaxSize "500";     apt setting to something less than 500 (Mb)22:27
m8tit's no problem actually, i upgraded the hdd22:27
jarhm22:27
jarI'm not entirely sure what the space used during the install process is.22:28
jarI'd have to ask a dev.22:28
m8ti'm doing the installation currently, i can check at the end22:29
jarend != during22:30
jarwtf22:33
jarxfce's clock seems to think today is Friday.22:33
jarjust the tooltip anyways22:34
m8tafter the copy of files is done the disk is filled up at 1.9GB22:37
jarI'll make a note of that and see if it can get changed..22:38
m8tnow it is downloading extra packages for l10n, with an eta of 12minutes22:45
jarthat's to be expected22:46
m8tgenii: it doesn't look that fixing the max size of archives will help, the disk is already filled over the 1.5GB and there is only 90MB of cached archives, of course i don't know if this is any different to the alternate cd22:52
geniiHm22:53
m8tit downloaded 130MB of packages and after the deb installations/configurations the disk tops at 2.5GB and at the end of the installation it is down to 2.4GB23:13
jarm8t, You can slim it up some more by removing packages.23:14
m8tit's booting right now on the dd23:14
m8tbut, i wasn't asked for packages to install during the process :/23:15
m8tand after all, i prefer a full desktop, otherwise i had started off a basic installation and installed Xorg+Xfce (for instance) myself :)23:15
m8tit's 2.4GB, with a swap partition of 190MB (I have 380MB of RAM, i don't know if that counts like if the swap size is calculated)23:17
m8tjar: well, that's it, thanks for the follow-up :)23:17
jarnp23:17
