laetzerhi all. I can't make my new kubuntu go online with a static ip. I followed advice I read about adding the details in etc/network/interfaces. is there anything else to try?01:49
homer_simpsonkubuntu's network interfaces are managed through NetworkManager, I'll think you'll be better off using the $ systemsettings01:50
homer_simpsonbut i guess you've tried that already :/01:50
laetzerhomer_simpson: yes i did try it. it lets me input the details, but i was not online. that's when i tried searching for info and found pages claiming NetworkManager can't handle static ips01:51

kreppnarand i cant do anything01:54
kreppnarbut when i open the game console, my cursor comes back01:54
kreppnarcould anyone help me?01:54
homer_simpsonprocedure would be : clean /etc/network/interfaces - restart NM - check cables - kill NM daemon and remove NMdaemon startup script links in /etc/init.d - check input data (ip, gateway [status and connexion parameters]) - write proper /etc/network/interfaces - reboot (actually you could do without, but it's just worth doing it this way)02:00

BluesKajvnc is slow and unstable in my experience , openssh for linux to linux box is the way I found to be quickest and most stable ...and very easy to setup15:58
heimdallferrethum, I want to have a graphic connection with my computer at work, using vnc15:59

darkdelusionsWhat a good native app to test it in? see if i can get it working there first then I will battle with vent (its a teamspeak like app)17:20
Mamarokdarkdelusions: I was rather asking if you want to use it with skype, make sure you have the static version of it, since that doesn't need pulseaudio17:20
robin0800BluesKaj: don't like to mention works fine in ubuntu17:21

Neremorhello! I removed all alsa kernel modules for soundcards. is there a way to reinstall them via apt?20:10
wathekHello all20:13
wathekI would ask if there's any repo that contains Qt 4.5.3 ?20:13
wathekfor the karmic koala20:13
BenkinoobyNeremor: sudo apt-get install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils20:14
Benkinoobymaybe you have to use purge20:15
Benkinoobywathek: http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=default&section=all&arch=any&searchon=names&keywords=qt20:15
wathekBenkinooby, cool thank you20:17
Benkinoobywathek: i am not sure if you will need all of them20:17
=== root is now known as Guest29483
Benkinoobywathek: is there any special purpose?20:17
wathekBenkinooby, yep it says that Qt 4.5.3 is available that's all what I need20:17
wathekneed just to add the repos in my ubuntu and then install it20:18
wathek:D20:18
Benkinoobywathek: i guess u donwloaded software, not insing apt-get or aptitude20:18
Benkinoobywathek: so dependencies could not be resolved...20:18
wathekBenkinooby, no I used apt-get20:18
Benkinoobywathek: in general, aptitude seems to have better dependencie-management that apt-get20:19
wathekBenkinooby, yep that's right20:19
wathekBenkinooby, but the problem is in which repos I can find qt 4.5.320:21
watheklooool20:25
Benkinoobywathek: ?20:25
wathekwhat does it mean 4.5.3really4.5.2-0ubuntu120:25
wathekit's 4.5.2 and not 4.5.3 ?20:25
wathekloool20:25
Benkinooby?20:26
wathekBenkinooby, it seems that it's the 4.5.2 and not the 4.5.320:26
Benkinoobywathek: i see 4.5.320:27
wathekBenkinooby, I got Qt 4.5.3really4.5.2-0ubuntu1 and when I do qmake -v20:27
wathekit says it's 4.5.220:27
wathekdoesn't matter20:30

lilihi.. does anybody here can help me? when i try to boot ubuntu, i often failed at grub. and it's left _ blinking and i have to hard reset the computer. i really confused with what causing this. is this a problem with ubuntu or hardware?20:34
Benkinoobylili: did you do update or something like tis before?20:35
liliBenkinooby : i believe it's a fresh install. i'll try to boot with Live CD and the problem still the same, but it's not always like that, it's only sometimes. i'm afraid if it's not ubuntu so it's the ram. am i right?20:37
Benkinoobylili: you can test the ram with the live-cd20:38
Benkinoobylili: there is a entry in the menu beside install ubuntu and test ubuntu....20:38
Benkinoobylili: is your ram old?20:38
liliBenkinooby : i forgot to mention that i have running that test, and the result is fine, well i have this ram for 2 years. i'm not sure if it's old or not :)20:39
Benkinoobylili: 2 years are ok... what is about the hard disk?20:40
=== orion is now known as Guest38182
liliBenkinooby : the hard disk is old. i have two hard disk installed, and bot are still ata20:41

Neremori'm using pulseaudio, but i only get sound from the two front speakers. I have an intel onboard soundcard which supports 5.1 for sure (tested under windows), but pulseaudio only uses the output for the front speakers. any idea what to fix?20:52
Ev0luti0n_guys21:00
Benkinoobylili: so the boot problem occurs with livecd?21:01
Ev0luti0n_how can i do a scan to my linux system for trojans and malware?21:01
liliBenkinooby : yes21:01
BenkinoobyNeremor: use kmixer21:02
Neremorhm doesn't kmixer belong to alsa? i have a pulseaudio problem21:02
BenkinoobyNeremor: and also use sudo alsaconf in terminal... check if all panels are activated21:03
Neremoralsaconf isn't available anymore21:03
Neremorin the default ubuntu repos21:03
BenkinoobyNeremor: the way linux handles sound is quite difficult. there are different layers...21:04
BenkinoobyNeremor: oh, sorry i mean alsamixer21:04
Benkinoobylili: d you also have a hard disk install of ubuntu?21:04
Neremorwell ok, i have to restart kubuntu because i changed the default sound card21:05
Neremori'm back in a few minutes21:05
BenkinoobyEv0luti0n_: google is your friend.. there is a lot of software21:06
liliBenkinooby : yes, both of my hard disk run ubuntu and kubuntu21:06
Benkinoobylili: so the boot problem only comes with the live cd?21:06
BenkinoobyEv0luti0n_: clam AV and AVG are offering linux antivirus software for free21:08
liliBenkinooby : no, both live cd and hard disk. but you know it's not always just sometimes.21:08
orzelHello. I'm quite confused because i have two computers that successfully updated to 9.10, but i dont have the same behaviour in kde.  On one computer, if i drag&drop the 'desktop'  folder on the background, i'm asked about 'icon' and 'lancelot', but not the usual 'directory viewing' option. In the same way, in the desktop configuration, if i want to use the "Desktop view" style, i can't, i only have the default 'Desktop' plasma style.21:09
orzelDo you have any idea what could cause this ?21:09
Benkinoobylili: what is the log files saying?21:09
orzelespecially, it feels weird to have a 'style' menu with only one style inside....21:09
liliBenkinooby : i don't know i never see the log file.21:10
Benkinoobylili: use the program ksystemlog.... ist installed by default21:11
liliBenkinooby : sadly, i'm now chatting on netbook because the desktop won't start. :(21:11
Benkinoobylili: canyou get into comandline?21:12
Benkinoobylili: or boot with fail-safe option?21:13
Neremorwell now i've no sound at least21:13
Benkinoobyorzel: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=13456821:13
Neremori changed the alsa default sound card to my pci-c-media card. This card has loaded kernel drivers and should work. all channels are unmuted. alsa routes the input to pulseaudio. Pulseaudio has set as output the c-media card too.21:14
Neremorand off course i restarted after the changes i made.21:14
orzelBenkinooby: i wont delete my whole .kde dir!!21:15
orzelBenkinooby:  or do you mean that it could be kde messing with its configuration files ?21:15
liliBenkinooby : i can. and then?21:15
Benkinoobyorzel: this is not what i told you... but this are the files, that contain all the settings, so i guess this is where the difference is21:15
Neremorno i have sound again :D21:16
Benkinoobylili: go to /var/log21:16
orzelBenkinooby: i can delete all plasma related file though21:16
BenkinoobyNeremor: what did you change?21:16
Neremornothing :D21:16
drostie_anyone know where I can find source or docks for the notes plasmoid? it doesn't seem to be on the kde site, or else my google-fu is off. :/21:16
Neremorok but now i've the problem with which i started today:21:16
drostie_hmmm. evil dual logins... :/21:17

Benkinoobylili: cat syslog | grep grub21:18

Neremori would like to configure the volume of the single channels in pulseaudio's "pavucontrol". But something strange happens: When i set EVERY slider (all 6) to zero, you should think you don't hear anything anymore. Wrong; the front speakers are muted as they are supposed to. but the rear speakers aren't affected by the change... any idea why??21:19
=== [newbie] is now known as RussellAlan
liliBenkinooby : are you sure that was the right cmd? because it says no such file or directory21:20
BenkinoobyNeremor: i had a similar problem... finally i solved it by letting kmixer display all channels and then i tested... also you have to know, that you have to set some software app. to obey pulse-audi. my vlc player was using alsa straigt ignoring pulseaudio totally... i had to do the setting in vlc21:21
drostieI'm not even seeing the notes plasmoid on opendesktop.org o_O.21:22
Benkinoobylili: ??? wow... ok, what files are in the /var/log directory?21:22
Benkinoobydrostie: maybe it was not a plasmoid... maybe it was knotes...21:23
liliBenkinooby : lots and it's impossible for me to tell you one by one.21:23
Benkinoobylili: do you see a file called syslog ?21:23
liliBenkinooby : yep, syslog, syslog 1, and syslog 2.gz21:24
BenkinoobyNeremor: but for you it seems to be a system problem, and not an app. problem21:24
Neremorok i got it right now21:25
Benkinoobylili: cat syslog | grep grub21:25
Neremori didn't solve the error, but i found a work-around21:25
Benkinoobylili: cat syslog | grep boot21:25
BenkinoobyNeremor: what is the workaround?21:25
drostieBenkinooby: no, I really don't think the plasma widget that I'm using is KNotes, based on the screenshots I can find of KNotes. o_O21:26
drostieAnyway, I think I found the config file.21:26
liliBenkinooby, cat:  syslog: no such file or directory21:26
Neremorbecause i can't change the volume of the rear speakers, i reduced the volume of the front speakers...21:27
