selinaHi04:59
sidracerI'm new at using this irc app05:32
sidracerI have a problem with kubuntu but it's unusual... not sure who to ask? :(05:34
devious..05:34
sidracerwho is in charge of this site and other kubuntu sites?05:35
darkdelusionssidracer: if you have a question its just best to ask05:37
darkdelusionsand once of us will attemp to steer you in the right direction05:37
sidracerokay, well, it's bad... something i did...05:38
sidracernot really a support question but i limited my support sources05:38
sidraceri had problems with kubuntu and ubuntu before and got too frustrated but it's fine now... I can deal with it... so, I am hoping that this channel will welcome me..05:40
sidracerdark: are you reading me?   I don't want to bother anyone if they are busy05:40
darkdelusionsjust ask away05:40
sidracerI did have one support question but I'll save it for now... it's towards my laptop but i don't have it with me right here05:41
sidracerdark:  I used kubuntu forums but i got banned because of my behavior... i just wanted to apologize but i don't think they accepted it...05:41
judgenis there a way to reassign mouse buttons?05:42
sidracermy support question is how to enable 3d effects with older hardware... but, i'll look into it later... i edited xorg but i am not sure what to put there05:42
sidraceris it not a good question?   I just wondered if this is the only other support source05:46
darkdelusionsGoogle is generally my support source05:46
sidracerdark:  yes, that's a good one05:47
sidracerbut, if the solution is from the forums... i can't read it now05:47
darkdelusionsPretty much anything ubuntu will work on kubuntu as well so there for i normall just search for Issue ubuntu05:48
darkdelusionsor if its a kubuntu specific problem I generally ask here05:48
judgenis there a way to get qt4 apps to look as all my qt3 ones?05:48
sidracerdark:  okay, that's a good point and idea... thank you05:49
sidracerdark:  do you know of any issues in ubuntu/kubuntu regarding older ati hardware... if you know about mesa and dri issues?   I tried kubuntu and ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop but i get lockups05:50
sidraceror if you know if any x or xorg or ati guys come on here any time?05:50
darkdelusionssidracer: not really I am a Nvidia guy so i dont deal much ati stuff or pay attention to ATI stuff really05:51
sidraceri did google and followed some supposed solutions in the ubuntu forums but when i tried to use some of their suggestions, they didn't work05:51
sidracerdark:  I prefer nvidia too but it's my laptop and i'm stuck with the ati card in there :)05:52
darkdelusionshave you tried one of the old cd 's like 9.04 and see if the same thing happens05:53
darkdelusions9.10 seems to be quirky05:53

sidracerhard locks the system05:58
sidraceryes, 9.04 works fine05:58
sidracerwhat does that mean?05:58
sidraceri tried on 9.04 and i can use 3d effects... i think... been a while since i tried but i remember it works when i try live cd05:59
sidracerby lock up, too, i mean the mouse freezes....  the cursor does that spin and then freezes05:59
sidracerkeyboard and mouse becomes non-responsive06:00
sidracerthis is after enabling 3d and if i try firefox... soon after I click the icon or select it from menu... things lock up06:00
sidracer2d worls fome06:00
sidraceroops, works fine06:00
sidracerand of course, 3d effects is enabled on live cd as default06:01

judgenas the fglrx driver from AMD does not support that old cards any more.06:27

sidracerthere is nothing in xorg.conf?   or if i look at it, there is not much there06:29
sidraceri'm confused because even when googling and trying to figure out what should be there...06:30
judgendoes xorg start for you or are you stuck in CLI?06:30
sidracerthere is so many intangibles or variations...06:30
sidracerit depends... are you talking about starting up with 3d or 2d?06:30
judgeneither.06:30
sidracerwith 3d , it will start but i can't run anything... i have tried an experiment with the live cd...06:31

ct529hi everybody! I have discovered that none of the SIP phone available have direct support for pulse audio server (including Twinkle and Ekiga)09:47
ct529what do you think?09:48
ct529I do realise that OSS and Alsa sound is redirected through pulse audio, but would it not be better to have direct output to pulse audio?09:50
macosure09:50
macobut if the software doesnt support PA output....*shrug*09:50
ct529maco: I wonder how complex is to make at least one SIP phone compliant with pulse audio .... I think we are a bit weak on SIP on Kubuntu .... I have tested most of them including things like qutecom and their audio performance is not brilliant on kubuntu ....09:52
macokubuntu doesnt include pulse09:52
maconor does xubuntu09:52
macojust ubuntu09:52
ct529maco: I have kubuntu, and it does definitively include pulse!09:54
macoit definitely does not09:54
macopulse is in the repositories since they are shared with ubuntu09:54
macoyou must've installed something that depends on it09:55
ct529maco: well, it does on mine .... I installed 9.10 64 bit and it came with pulseaudio included and active .... which actually the only thing that works with all applications really09:55
ct529maco: so what does kubuntu uses if not pulse audio?09:55
macopulseaudio isnt on the kubuntu cd09:56
macojust goes straight from phonon to alsa09:56
macoif you install pulseaudio, it goes phonon -> pulseaudio -> alsa09:56
ct529maco: I installed from the Internet with the usual procedure .... but had previously installed from the DVD and the pulse audio was there (I have several machines with kubuntu)09:56
macoah yeah there was a bug in the 9.04 DVD09:56
macokubuntu's not *supposed* to have pulseaudio though09:57
ct529maco: I do not even see phonon in the list of multimedia servers09:57
macoits not a server09:57
macoyou dont *need* a sound server09:57
macoyou just need the alsa-lib api09:57
macophonon is an abstraction above that for gstreamer & xine09:57
macoand if you want to use a sound server, you can shove pulseaudio between phonon and alsa-lib09:58
ct529maco: a bug in 904 that installed the whole pulse audio thing?09:58
macobut phonon's purpose is just to make working with gstreamer & xine easy09:58
macoyes, pulseaudio being installed by the 9.04 DVD was a bug09:58
ct529maco: I do not understand why you do not want to have an audio server10:00
macosome people dont think "i can play music over the network!" matters10:00
macopulseaudio makes what would be black magic wtih pure alsalib easier...but for basic usage...no difference10:01

I cant update with KPackageKit, it says: "Failed to fetch ,,, Could not connect to 127.0.0.1:8080 (127.0.0.1). - connect (111: Connection refused)"  I dont understand why its trying to connect to localhost? Vroomfondlesounds like a graphics driver issue though15:08
Vroomfondlewhat card?15:08
chisel_this is an upgrade issue, all was fine prior to upgrade15:08
VroomfondleI wonder if the kwin compositing stuff isn't happy15:08
Vroomfondleyes, but the upgrade will have upgraded graphics drivers and kwin15:09
chisel_i've even removed compiz15:09
Vroomfondlewell that'll make no difference - KDE doesn't use compiz15:09
chisel_lol that explains why it never worked!15:09
Vroomfondle:)15:09
Vroomfondlekwin has its own in-built compositing stuff15:10
Vroomfondletry this in a terminal:                glxinfo | grep -i dri15:10
chisel_nothing at all came up15:10
Vroomfondleright, then DRI is not enabled. This is generally required for things like video scaling and desktop effect compositing15:11
Vroomfondleit's usually enabeld by default if the graphics driver supports it15:11
chisel_ok! now we're getting somewhere!15:11
Vroomfondlewhat graphics chipset do you have, and are you using standard open-source drivers or the manufacturer's driver?15:12

chisel_nvidia accelerated graphics driver (version 96) {recommended]15:14
chisel_thatz all Hardware Drivers will tell me15:15
chisel_i don't know where else to look15:15
Vroomfondlehmm15:15
chisel_i'll check with Ubuntu Tweak15:15
VroomfondleI think that's the NVidia manfuacturer driver, which is in theory the one you want to use in order to get DRI support15:15
Vroomfondle(otherwise known as the "restricted hardware driver")15:16
VroomfondleI wonder if there's a regression bug in it in Karmic which is causing it to not like your graphics card15:16
chisel_i suspect that is not the case. i say that cuz of all the ppl in the forums with way better cards having the exact same issues15:18
chisel_of course i assume that with very little actual knowledge to go on15:19
chisel_tell me what DRI is please15:21
VroomfondleDirect Rendering Infrastructure15:21
Vroomfondlebasically, it's the thing which allows applications to make use of your graphics acceleration15:21
chisel_is there an app that handles it? in which i can check settings?15:21
Vroomfondlewell, there used to be a configuration file but that's no longer used. If you check /var/log/xorg.0.log and search for "DRI" you may find something15:22
chisel_how about nvidia X server settings?15:22
Vroomfondlethat's where the window system logs its messages, including graphics-driver-related ones15:22
VroomfondleI don't think the nvidia-settings window shows it15:23
Vroomfondleat least, it doesn't seem to on mine15:23

chisel_kk lemme fire it up again, i just closed it15:25
chisel_i have it15:25
Vroomfondleit's on? hrm15:26
Vroomfondlethat is quite odd. Incidentally, what graphics card do you have? You see there are two nvidia drivers available, each supporting different cards15:27
Vroomfondleit's unlikely that you have the wrong driver if it worked before, but it's worth checking just incase the upgrade process installed the wrong one15:27
chisel_geforce2 mx/mx 40015:28
chisel_i know, its crusty15:28
VroomfondleI see. The 96 driver is correct, then.15:28

Vroomfondlewell, try it15:32
Vroomfondlecan't hurt15:32
chisel_k i did, and now will test a video15:32
chisel_nope15:33
Vroomfondlea bit of googling seems to suggest that the 96.43 driver (which you have) is potentially a bit incompatible with the version of xorg (the "x window system" server which provides all the graphics)15:33
Vroomfondlethere's some talk of NVidia providing an updated driver to work with the new xorg, but I can't find any confirmation as to whether that's happened15:34
bmungeranyone know why jabber on kopete disconnects every 5 or 10 minutes for me?15:35
bmungerIt's not the network and its not the server15:35
chisel_is there any chance to adjust xorg to become compatible? i konw nothing of xorg15:35
Vroomfondlechisel_: no, not really. xorg is a very important bit of software (without it, you'd have no desktop/windows), and downgrading generally isn't an option because so many other bits of the system depend on it.15:36
chisel_how bout settings within my video players?15:37
Vroomfondlewell, you want them to use either XV or GL for output in order to use video accelerationf eatures & scale videos properly, etc. - you could play around in their settings dialogs15:38
VroomfondleI suspect they're currently trying to use XV, which is best in theory, but GL would be good enough if it'll work for you15:38

JediMasterAnyone know why amarok seems to have forgotten all my track details and doesn't even try to read any ID3 (or similar info)? I've checked the same m4a track in VLC and it reads the track info.17:57
MamarokJediMaster: which version of Amarok?17:58
JediMasterMamarok, hi there, it's 2.2.1 (kde 4.3.3)17:59
MamarokJediMaster: do a full rescan, then restart Amarok, there was a database upgrade, but the trigger did not work18:00
colohello, hi can i install spanish lang in kubuntu ?18:00
JediMasterMamarok, also, whenever I try and drag a song from the playlist on the right to the saved playlists it adds the wrong song every time18:00
coloi installed the metapackage kubuntu-desktop, but i dont know how to install the spanish lang18:00
MamarokJediMaster: as I said, do a full rescan, the restart it first18:00

Mamarokyou are welcome18:02
MamarokJediMaster: in the settings -> Collection -> Rescan18:02
Mamarokrescan, not update18:02
chisel__this may not be the place to ask, but i'll try anyway. is there a tool like stumbleupon for konqueror?18:02
JediMasterMamarok, thanks got it "Fully Rescan Collection"18:03
Mamarokchisel__: you can add the stumbleupon engine to the existing ones AFAIK18:03
MamarokJediMaster: just don't forget to restart Amarok after that18:03
chisel__mamarok: yer gonna have to dumb it down for me...i'm a kde noob18:04
JediMasterMamarok, will do, I think it may not help that the library is on a NFS mount and Amarok may have opened before it had mounted18:04
rafasmartrgreening: is you that was working on samba sharing? you can confirm why this tab doesn't show up at Desktop?18:04
rgreeningrafasmart: samba sharing is utterly broken, and hence not enabled for a while now.18:05
rgreeningrafasmart: for lucid, we plan to fix tihs, by implementing samba usershare and ripping everything else out18:06
JediMasterMamarok, that's sorted the playlist out, thanks, going to try adding a song18:06
MamarokJediMaster: indeed, you should have the collection available if you want to scan it18:06
antonio_ciao18:06
rgreeningrafasmart: see https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/Specs/LucidFileSharing18:07
JediMasterMamarok, nope, it still adds the wrong song to the saved playlist when I drag it across18:08
rafasmartrgreening: but for folders, it works fine, right?18:08
JediMasterbut at least I have artist/album names now =)18:08
Mamarokchisel__: I don't use Stumbleupon, but since it's just another search engine, you should be able to add it in the settings18:08
JediMasterMamarok, it's weird, if I drag the same song, every single time the same wrong song is added to the saved playlist, and if I try the next song down, another wrong song is added18:09
Mamarokchisel__: in Settings -> Web Browser -> Web shortcuts18:09
MamarokJediMaster: tried a double click?18:09
Mamarokinstead of dragging18:09
JediMasterMamarok, that plays the song18:10

rafasmartrgreening: at least, with kdenetwork-filesharing I got a folder to be shared by samba, but I noticed that when I double click on a folder at desktop this tab doesn't appear18:11
rgreeningrafasmart: the Share tab should still be there... that is part of kdelibs. If it's missing, you have something broken...18:12

=== rmblr is now known as ramblurr
Mamarokchisel__: since I don't use StumbleUpon it's hard to tell, you might have a look at the settings there18:15
JediMasterMamarok, it's weird, no matter what I do it always adds the wrong song to the saved playlist18:15
MamarokJediMaster: strange, and everything is tagged correctly?18:15
JediMasterit's like it's a pointer pointing to the wrong index in a list of songs18:15
rgreeningrafasmart: actually, it's part of the file properties dialog, so anything which shows the file properties dialog will show the share tab18:15
JediMasteror as if there's an offset18:16
MamarokJediMaster: do you have some filtering active whe  you do this in the Collection Browser?18:16
rafasmartrgreening: i know users that manipulates folders on desktop often then on dolphin18:16
JediMasterMamarok, when I double click the songs on the right hand panel it plays the correct song and they have the right details18:16
JediMasterMamarok, at the moment, yes, let me try without18:16
MamarokJediMaster: could be a bug in the SQL query used18:17
JediMasterMamarok, same with or without a filter18:17
Mamarokhm, not the query then.18:17
rgreeningrafasmart: are you talking about desktop in a KDE or Gnome session? Desktop for KDE uses Folder-view applet, and accessing file properties there works.18:17
JediMasterMamarok, the playlists are stored in sqlite?18:17
JediMasterMamarok, looks like an interface bug18:18
MamarokJediMaster: care filing a bug on http://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=amarok ?18:18

MamarokJediMaster: yep, and you alos have the option to use an exernal MySQL server18:19
Mamarokalso*18:19
rgreeningrafasmart: so, right click and get properties, just like any other folder18:20
rgreeningthe share tab will show18:20

JediMasterMamarok, ohh funky, run one on my router/testing server downstairs, that'd be handy =)18:20
* JediMaster gets scared as kde.org knows his email address and he can't remember registering or logging in18:21
rgreeningrafasmart: even if you do this, it's still busted. Installing the kdebase-filesharing + samba + changing the filelistset perl script to SUID root may get you there, but no guarantees on what will or will not work or how it may corrupt/alter your smb.conf file.. it's unmaintained upstream.18:22
MamarokJediMaster: well, you obviously did, b.k.o is not omniscient :)18:22
JediMasterMamarok, yeah, but doesn't make it any less freaky18:22
rgreeningrafasmart: which is why we are ripping it our for lucid, if all goes well.18:22
MamarokJediMaster: you must have registred at some point on the bug tracker, maybe to follow a report or such18:25
telecentroOOOOOI18:26

rafasmartrgreening: a screenshot of what i'm talking: http://bit.ly/88LUej18:29
rgreeningrafasmart: it looks like you are trying to share '/' which is not possible. it has to be a directory under /home/<your user id here>18:30
rafasmartrgreening: no, its the same folder(testesmb on /home/rafael/Área de Trabalho), but accessed for diferent ways18:32
rgreeningrafasmart: if you can describe exactly how you got this, I may be able to see if I can duplicate it here...18:33
takishow can i change firefox's menu size in kubuntu?18:35
rafasmartrgreening: I'll try. 1st sorry because it's l10n. Área de Trabalho stands for "Desktop". on left,  properties folder by folderview. on right properties by dolphin18:35
rgreeningrafasmart: it could be related to localization issues in the way the filelistset perlscript works... maybe try with english locale or on a regular folder name like /home/rafael/test18:36
rafasmartrgreening: i'll do that right now18:37
rgreeningk18:37

Benkinoobyor do i need to download a extra ftp manager?22:13
marcreicheltmaybe the collection is too large, right now I am running "amarok --debug" to see what is going on22:13
marcreicheltit seems to work fine if I copy my collection step by step22:13
BluesKajmarcreichelt, libxine1-ffmpeg ?22:14
marcreicheltBluesKaj: it can play the MP3s22:14
marcreicheltAmaroK just takes a *lot* of time scanning them22:15
bodommarcreichelt: what DBMS are you using? Is a fresh install or are you upgrading from previous version?22:15
marcreicheltbodom: fresh install22:15
marcreicheltit seems to use the internal MySQL DB22:16
BluesKajmarcreichelt, make sure you don't have the tag option turned on, otherwise a large collection will take forever22:16
gorgonzolamarcreichelt: how many tracks in the collection?22:16
bodommarcreichelt: I had same issue with debian22:16
bodommarcreichelt: They fixed it on 2.2.1 but it isn't available on ubuntu by now22:16
marcreicheltBenkinooby: I think Dolphin should work fine, just klick into the location bar and enter your ftp URL22:17
gorgonzolamarcreichelt for reference, i have over 13k, and it was slow as molases with internal SQL, switched to external mysql server, now it flies.22:17
gorgonzolathat option was ported from 1.4 in 2.2.2, i think.22:17
marcreicheltBluesKaj: which tag option?22:17
marcreicheltgorgonzola: ahh, ok22:17
bodombtw 2.2.0 is quite buggy22:17
bodomI'm waiting to see lastes release on ubuntu, by now, I just stopped using amarok :\22:18

marcreicheltBenkinooby: hmm, maybe you should use Konqueror then22:21
Benkinoobymarcreichelt: i just was wondering if dolphin could manage, what i would like.... looks like i have to go for extra softwaree :(22:21

Benkinoobymarcreichelt: ah, i see it22:22
marcreicheltjust give it a try, you can skip to extra software (maybe GFTP?) later if it doesn't work22:22
gorgonzolabodom: you should try the latest version of amarok in the ppa. it is much improved, specially since they restored the external mysql option.22:23
bodomgorgonzola: I had it, then i migrated from debian to kubuntu and I seen kubuntu still got 2.2.022:23
marcreicheltgorgonzola: does external MySQL work with 2.2.0?22:24
bodomgorgonzola: is there a way to install it on kubuntu?22:25
marcreicheltbodom: see the latest news on http://www.kubuntu.org/22:25
gorgonzolamarcreichelt: to be honest, i don;t remember. i know it was reintroduced recently, and i'm using the newer from the kubuntu ppa (ie, 2.2.1), so probably it was introduced in 2.2.1. try the version in the ppa22:25
bodommarcreichelt: I love you :D22:26
gorgonzolabodom yes. karmic has 2.2.0 by default, but the kubuntu repo has the newer versions of amarok, as well as almost all of kde. a very fine alternative if you need specific features :)22:26
gorgonzolabodom give me a sec...22:26
marcreicheltgorgonzola: ok, I think I will upgrade to 2.2.1 and switch to an external MySQL DB :)22:27
gorgonzolabodom marcreichelt: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu karmic main that's the ppa. see for yourself here: http://www.kubuntu.org/news/amarok-2.2.122:27
bodommarcreichelt: 2.2.1 works like a charm :) 2.2.0 is very buggy22:28
bodomI'm installing 2.2.122:28
gorgonzolayou'll love it. i couldn't believe how faster my collection was after the switch. even modifying fields from within amarok's tag editor was almost instantaneous :D22:28

marcreicheltoh wow, Amarok 2.2.1 parsing all my MP3s in less than 5 seconds!!23:04
marcreicheltsomehow I think the internal DB of AmaroK is really slow, maybe they don't use SQLite the right way23:04
bodomwhat's "the right way"?23:05
marcreicheltbodom: you can execute SQL queries directly, meaning the file is updated every SQL statement, or you can use the commands BEGIN and COMMIT23:06
marcreicheltthis way all changes get written in one step, which is much faster23:06
bodommarcreichelt: yep, but compared to MySQL is slower anyway23:07
