josh_um i think FAT32 or FAT05:29
geniijosh_: Please pastebin result of command in Konsole of:  sudo fdisk -l05:30

josh_start is 1 end is 1021 blocks 3924693 id b system w95 FAT3205:35
geniijosh_: OK. So I would recommend: sudo mkdir /media/sdb1 && sudo mount -t vfat -o rw,users /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb105:37
geniijosh_: Then see if file browser shows anything inside /media/sdb1 directory05:38
josh_um do i copy and past?05:38
geniijosh_: Sure, everything on the one line after the :05:38
josh_o sweet that worked.....ok do i have to do that every time i plug in a divice?05:41
geniijosh_: Well, there is a way to make an entry in the /etc/fstab file for this. But if the drive is removable, then "sdb1" won't always be the same drive, etc. so if you go this way recommend to use UUID of the drive in there05:43

josh_oh i see05:52
crashdataGuest54271, or you can edit /etc/group05:52
geniijosh_: As for unmount, etc: When we manually mounted, to properly un-mount, should do like (in this particular case): sudo sync && sudo umount /media/sdb1 && sudo eject /dev/sdb05:53
Guest54271crashdata, the name of my HD is /dev/sdb1, so would the command be sudo usermod +G /dev/sdb1?05:54
crashdataGuest54271, usermod +G cdrom user05:55
crashdatathe group is called cdrom05:56
crashdatajust add ur user to that group he should have access to the cdrom05:56
crashdatamake sure its cap G05:56
crashdataafter adding that user to the group05:57
crashdatau have to exit x05:57
geniicrashdata: Incidentally - if you omit the -a (APPEND) to that command, the ONLY group that user will belong to is "cdrom"05:57
Guest54271i get usermod: no flags given05:57
crashdatasorry -G05:59
crashdatausermod -G groupname user05:59
geniiGuest54271: I would not recommend to follow crashdata's advice in this instance05:59
Guest54271genii: what would you recommend?06:00
geniiGuest54271: eg: the command they give will remove "user" from all groups and make "cdrom" the only group they belong to. As well they omitted the "sudo" which would be neccesary for it to actually work. Additionally, we don't know if your /dev/sdb1 requires someone to be in the cdrom group to be accessible, especially as it might be a hard drive.06:01
crashdatagenii,  no ur not getting it, its Cap G06:02
crashdatameaning ur adding another gorup06:02
crashdatanot -g06:02
crashdata-g means initial group06:02
geniiGuest54271: I would recommend to alter the mount options so that regular users can use it06:02
crashdatacapital G means add that user to another group06:02
crashdataGuest54271, just do sudo -G cdrom user06:02
geniicrashdata: From usermod manpage: a, --append    Add the user to the supplemental group(s). Use only with -G option.06:03
crashdatahttp://www.computerhope.com/unix/usermod.htm06:06
crashdataread it06:06
Guest54271it is an external HD and not a CDROM drive, does this make a difference in the command06:06
crashdatayes06:06
genii    A list of supplementary groups which the user is also a member of. Each group is separated from the next by a comma, with no intervening whitespace. The groups are subject to the same restrictions as the group given with the -g option. If the user is currently a member of a group which is not listed, the user will be removed from the group. This behaviour can be changed via -a option, which appends user to the current supplementary group list. . ...06:08
genii Note that this means: Unless with -a, unless all other groups the user already currently belongs to get listed along with the one you wish to add them too, THEY WILL END UP BELONGING SOLELY TO THE ONE YOU NAMED06:08
genii( excerpt for -G option  )06:09
Guest54271does that mean it's not possible to simply add read/write permissions, without removing/affecting my other settings?06:12
crashdataGuest54271, just do chown /dev/drive user06:13
geniiGuest54271: If I hadn't needed to be in bed to sleep an hour ago I would help you more on this problem. at this time I'm trying to limit what damage could be caused by making your username only belong to one group.06:14
crashdatagenii, well i guess i've added my user before the way i gave it06:14
crashdataand i never had any complication06:14
crashdatai guess when i made myself a member of an admin group...which on this case wheel06:14

Zyside mouse button works in FF and rekonq but not in konq or dolphin12:43
Zyhow do i get it working? thanks12:43
JuJuBee_Any help on sound? I narrowed it down... If I fast forward through a song to almost the end, the next song no sound, if I do same again next sond has sound... every other song plays fine12:49
KadajJuJuBee_ does it do that with every media player?12:52
senaJuJuBee_: yeah it sounds more like a player problem12:53
soeehi12:54
JuJuBee_Kadaj: not sure.  I can't even get Banshee to play any songs now... just get x next to each one I try to play12:54
JuJuBee_This all started after upgrading to karmic12:55
Kadajthe media player you are using probably got an upgrade when you upgraded to karmic and it has some bug which is causing your error12:57
Kadajthats my best guess anyways12:57
syriusI have problem with webcam kubuntu 9.10 ekiga 3.2.6 http://pastebin.ca/raw/171929512:58
JuJuBee_What other media player should I try...  It seems strange that banshee will not play any files now...12:58
KadajI use amarok and it works well12:59
JuJuBee_with karmic?12:59
Kadajyeah12:59
JuJuBee_Amarok won't play either...13:00
JuJuBee_in fact amarok won't even load now...13:00
JuJuBee_amarok: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libamaroklib.so.1: undefined symbol: _ZTIN6TagLib3ASF4FileE13:01
JuJuBee_I had a feeling that upgrading to karmic would cause me nightmares.13:02
JuJuBee_I can't boot the 2.6.31 kernel as it makes my mouse keep darting to the upper left corner and it becomes useless...13:02
senaJuJuBee_: have u restarted after the upgrade13:03
senaJuJuBee_: or do apt-get update and apt-get upgrade then restart and see what is going on13:05
JuJuBee_yes to both13:09
robsihi all. does the knetworkmanager provide a wizard for setting up mobile broadband connections (linke in ubuntu)?13:09
senaJuJuBee_: see if libamaroklib.so.1 library exists sudo ls -la /usr/lib/ | grep libamaroklib13:12
JuJuBee_yes, it seems to be a link to libamaroklib.so.1.0.013:14
JuJuBee_I wonder if I should just do a clean install of karmic13:16
senaJuJuBee_: clean install noramlly soves problems when the os resolves correctly your hardware everything is fine13:21
senaJuJuBee_: do you get the same error from amarok13:22
JuJuBee_sena: what error?  I cannot load amarok13:22
senayou said it gives you this error amarok: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libamaroklib.so.1: undefined symbol: _ZTIN6TagLib3ASF4FileE13:23
JuJuBee_yes13:23
senaand now it does not load at all?13:24
JuJuBee_that is correct13:24
JuJuBee_since the upgrade13:24
senaok type amarok in your konsole (terminal) and it should write the errors that cause this13:25
JuJuBee_that is how I got the error I posted13:26
JuJuBee_that was the only messgae13:26
JuJuBee_*message13:26
JuJuBee_On another note, will I see any significant diffs if  I use 64bit vs. 32 bit?  I have core 2 duo 2.54 with 6G RAM dual 320G 7200RPM drives13:27
senaJuJuBee_: if you use 32 bit os it will use only 3GB of your RAM13:28
JuJuBee_I see.  So I should use the 64bit version.13:28
JuJuBee_Specially since I use virtualbox for a windows app I need13:29
JuJuBee_Well, I think I will download the Karmic 64BIT CD and reinstall.13:29
JuJuBee_Just such a pita to reinstall all software and configure everything every 6 months or so...13:30
JuJuBee_Where can I get the md5 for the iso I am downloading so I can check it after download?13:34
sena-JuJuBee_: that is why I use the ltd (long term support distributions) i am using hardy 8.04 ltd now13:36
sena-JuJuBee_: and I test the new ones in VirtulaBox out of curiosity13:37
hyper_chhmmm, in kde 4.3.4 I sometimes lose my wifi connection with the network-manager-plasma-widget... and then it won't reconnect at all. How can I restart those network services completely? I tried to turn wifi of and back on with the plasma widget, but that didn't help. It didn't even try to reconnect anymore. The only thing I can do is reboot the computer13:42
JuJuBee_sena : so you are still using 8.04.... do you get updates like the most recent version of amarok etc... or are you stuck with versions for 8.04?14:01
Vroomfondle8.04 only gets security updates and bugfixes14:02
df___hello14:02

sena-Vroomfondle: exactly14:02

df___#rus_israel14:02

hyper_chJuJuBee_: and wicd can't do that (yet) :(14:02
df___join #rusisrael14:02
sena-JuJuBee_: but everything works like a charm, recently i installed firefox 3.5.6 with lastest flash plaey 10 64 bit14:03
hyper_chJuJuBee_: but you're right, wicd is generally better than the network manager14:03
JuJuBee_Ah, you are correct14:03

PhiloWhat's a good program for resizing partitions in Kubuntu?17:48
phant0mgparted17:48
phant0mits an iso you burn to disk and can format resize etc17:49
PhiloAh17:49
phant0mchange the order of your boot device to cd/dvd and start it before you start the os17:49
PhiloIs it in the operating system already or do I need to download?17:50
phant0myou download it burn it and run before the os starts up17:50
PhiloResizing wont hurt any of the data, will it?17:50
phant0mso  restart is obviously required17:50
phant0mshoudlnt do if you do it correctly17:51
PhiloMy home partition is full and I need to provide it with more space17:51
PhiloOkay, good.17:51
phant0mwait17:51
phant0mits full?#17:51
PhiloYea.17:51
phant0mdo you not have another hd17:51
PhiloSadly, no.17:51
phant0mthen i suggest you dont do it17:52
PhiloI sort of have to.17:52
phant0mget another hd and use fstab to integrate it into your current system17:52
phant0mwhat are you trying to do17:52
PhiloIs it difficult to resize with it being full?17:52
phant0myou will lose data17:52
PhiloBasically, I'm trying to set it up to where I can install what I need for Wine applications.17:53
PhiloBut using the home directory with such a small partition obviously created issues.17:53
phant0msize of hd?17:53
PhiloI didn't know it at the time, I just assumed I had a decent amount of memory on the partition.17:53
Philo300g or so.17:53
phant0mk what progs do you have17:53
PhiloJust Wine and the default Kubuntu applications.17:54
PhiloAlong with a World of Warcraft without the expansions.17:54
PhiloBut that took up the entire partition.17:54
phant0mwell that doesnt take up all that space surley17:54
phant0mno17:54
phant0mit doesnt hang on brb17:54
JuJuBee_What do I install to get gnome desktop along wtih kde?17:54

PhiloHow would I check how much space is left in the home partition?17:55
JuJuBee_Ah, thats it/  Thanks, I was having a moment.... looking for gnome-desktop17:55
phant0mmaco: the ubuntu system would not take up more than 300gb would it17:56
maco300gb? O_O17:56
macoi dont even have a 300gb hard drive17:56
phant0mme either17:57
PhiloWell, I don't think it would. I wonder whether the home partition was just incredibly small.17:57
phant0mPhilo if i were you i would check for a worm17:57
joshjtlhi folks, can i add a repo just for koffice-kde4 ppa instead of for the entire: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu karmic main ?17:58
PhiloIt's listing the home folder as 9.4gb17:58
phant0mPhilo: worms on linux are very obscure but some do exist17:58
PhiloBut.17:59
PhiloI do have 250gb left17:59
PhiloJust not in the home directory.17:59
PhiloI don't know lol17:59
phant0mgoto applictaions17:59
phant0mdisk usage analyser17:59
phant0mand check whats using up all that space18:00
phant0meg. do you have alot of music or alot of films18:00
phant0many you could burn to free it up or?18:00
PhiloI can't find that application.18:00
PhiloNo, I just formatted last night.18:00
PhiloSo, there's no way the space could be used up.18:00
phant0mk applications-accesories-disk usage18:01
joshjtlanyone?18:02
geniiPhilo: If all you want for the moment is to be able to put more stuff in your home dir but not have to resize stuff, etc. I'd recommend just bind-mount some dir from the main area into it18:02
PhiloAnd Wine would recognize that?18:02
PhiloPhantom: I'm not finding that disk usage application.18:03
phant0myou on kubuntu or gnome18:03
PhiloThere isn't an accesories tab and a search for disk usage comes up blank18:03
PhiloKubuntu.18:03
phant0mthats why then sorry i assumed gnome because you just installed18:03
joshjtlok how about if i rephrase like this: how can I install Koffice 2.1 without otherwise using backports repo?18:04
Philogenii: How would I do that?18:04
phant0msorry joshjtl i cant help you there18:04
Philophant0m: Is there not an equivalent application on Kubuntu?18:06
geniiPhilo: You can also specify to Wine in the "Configure Wine" to use whatever arbitrary dir you want as for instance, Drive Z:   or such (so long as the user running Wine could read-write there).18:06
geniiApologies on lag, work18:06
PhiloSo, I would need to give it permisssions?18:06
phant0mim sure there must be but i wouldnt know as i use gnome and havent used kde so far18:07
PhiloWhy would resizing it cause data loss?18:07
phant0mbecause it removing x amount to free space the space has to come from somewhere18:08
PhiloYes, but that also occurs whenever you resize a partition to install Linux or some other operating system to dual-boot.18:08
PhiloRight?18:08
phant0myes but only if the drive is full18:09
PhiloOh, I see.18:10
PhiloWell, then.18:10
PhiloIf I went ahead and deleted the WoW application and Wine, would that work?18:10
phant0mprobably not as the programs wouldnt pass a large amount of space it would probly be in the mb region and not gb18:11
PhiloWoW was over 4 gigs or so.18:11
PhiloWithout being installed.18:12
PhiloIt's fairly large.18:12
phant0mits still not all that much though but it depends how much space you want and need only you can decide that18:12
PhiloI probally need a good 30gb in the directory.18:12
PhiloMaybe I should just format and provide home with a larger partition.18:14
lordganeshis there any inbuilt task schedular in kubuntu18:14
phant0mme personally would do a reformat and resize before setup then do wht it is your wanting to do but thats just me though18:16
phant0mso in this case its your decision18:16

BloodyratsHi all, I have a question about deleting files......I notice some operating systems delete really fast while others delete really slow(vista)...I'm not quite sure how each operating system deletes, but I get the impression that the fast ones just mark a location to be overwritten while other operating systems actually go thru each byte to set it all to 0...is this somewhat true?21:48
shadeslayerBloodyrats: yes... though each operation might be different21:49
shadeslayerbrb21:49
BloodyratsAh ok thank you....so it is possible that my os marks locations as allowed-to-be-overwritten? And that the data I think I deleted is still actually there just waiting to be overwritten by anything else I save?21:51

BluesKajScunizi, shadeslayer, you must shut X down in order to install the nvidia driver and remove the old one first22:08

NickoeMamarok: Did you find anything? And PartitionMagic doesn't work :s23:22
MamarokNickoe: no, it's done on upgrade from Jaunty to Karmic usually23:22
NickoeMamarok: So.. is there any way I can get one?23:22
Mamaroksinc the ext4 filesystem only was released in Karmic officially23:23
MamarokNickoe: are you already running Karmic?23:23
NickoeYes, not an upgrade either23:23
NickoeNor have I installed it yet23:23

MamarokNickoe: see here: http://ext4.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Ext4_Howto#For_people_who_are_running_Ubuntu23:24

MamarokNickoe: wait, I don't understand: you already have Karmic installed?23:25
NickoeMamarok: No, I'm running it from a booted CD in demo mode23:25
Mamarokah, now I get it23:25

NickoeWin XP23:25
MamarokNickoe: do you have free space on your hard disk?23:26
Nickoeyes, about 200GB23:26
Mamarokoh, great, that's more than enough to add a Kubuntu :)23:26
NickoeMamarok: it's just a matter of getting the ext4 partition for me23:26
MamarokNickoe: once you have launched the installation mode it suggest the various installation possibilities, choose the dual install alongside Windows23:27
NickoeMamarok: mine only has full installation(all mem usage) and manually select partitions23:27
NickoeMamarok: And there is no way for me to add an ext4 from the manual menu23:28
MamarokNickoe: then there is something worng with that CD, I also suggest you get a new iso and brun another CD then23:28
NickoeMamarok: It's downloading already :)23:28
MamarokNickoe: you should have 3 options: all the HD, alongside Windows and Manual installation23:28
MamarokI guess it's the alongside Windows you want, right?23:29
NickoeMamarok: Yes23:29
Mamarokwhich you can also do with the Manual installation btw23:29
NickoeMamarok: is it maybe because my HD is seperated into Recovery partition (FAT32) and NTFS?23:29
NickoeMost of the memory is in the NTFS23:29
Nickoethe rest is in recovery23:29
Mamarokonce you have resized the HD to make space for Kubuntu, it will ask you what filesystem you want to use, thre you choose ext423:29
Mamarokat the very moment you partition and before formatting the new partitions23:30
NickoeMamarok: What i mean is this: Around 310GB in NTFS, around 4GB in recovery23:30
NickoeMamrok: and thats all my memory23:30

Mamarokdon't, memory is RAM, the rest is not memory but disk space23:31
NickoeMamarok: See, I did it right there.23:32
NickoeMamarok: Well, is there anything I can do in the 15 minutes the ISO has remaining?23:32
MamarokNickoe: no, not really23:32
NickoeMamarok: Ok, so how will I create the new ext4 again?23:33
NickoeMamarok: I want to get this right before I reboot23:33
MamarokNickoe: it will ask you once you have resized your Hard disk, when you are going to format the newly created partitions23:33
NickoeMamarok: And I resize it in Administrative tools?23:34
NickoeAssuming you've used win xp23:34
Mamarokfirst choose installation alongside the existing Windows, then it will resize the Hard disk, then make the new partiotion and that's were you choose the filesystem23:34
NickoeMamarok: Ah, ok.23:34
MamarokNickoe: no, let the Kubuntu Installation ahlde that, not in WIndows23:34
