sbalneavMorning all14:46
mccord42good morning.  I have a question about setting up edubuntu for my preschool aged kids14:59
sbalneav!ask15:00
ubottuPlease don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)15:00
mccord42I installed from the dvd but I see no way to set up the young kids interface that I have seen on some screenshots on the edubuntu web page15:00
mccord42I am setting up a stand alone system15:00
mccord42I created a second user that isn't an admin but it has the default desktop15:01
sbalneavOn the screenshots page? A lot of those shots are from gCompris15:01
sbalneavApplications -> Education -> Education Suite Gcompris15:02
mccord42I'm trying to set up a very simple interface for a 3-4 year old.  any ideas?15:02
sbalneavWell, I don't think there's any desktop manager systems specifically designed for your people...15:03
sbalneavso, if I were you, I'd simply set up icons on the desktop, and make 'em big...15:04
sbalneavSo it's easy for little fingers to point-n-click15:04
sbalneavsorry, s/your/young/15:05
sbalneavAlso, I'd put everything on one panel (the bars at the top and bottom), and make the panels bigger15:06
sbalneavthat will make the icons on them larger as well.15:06
mccord42so what do the ubuntu-edu-preschool, primary, secondary, etc packages do?15:09
sbalneavThey're meta-packages.15:09
sbalneavWhen you install them, they, in turn, install other packages15:09
sbalneavsbalneav@3jane:~$ aptitude show ubuntu-edu-preschool15:10
sbalneavDepends: gcompris, gcompris-data, kanagram, khangman, ktuberling, tuxpaint, tuxpaint-data, tuxpaint-stamps-default15:10
sbalneavso, installing ubuntu-edu-preschool will install gcompris, khangman, ktuberling, tuxpaint, etc.15:10
sbalneavif you do an "aptitude show <pkgname>", and look at the "Depends" line, you'll see what they pull in.15:11
mccord42ah, but if all the meta packages were installed during the initial install and you remove them, the other packages they installed do not get uninstalled?15:11
sbalneavNo15:11
sbalneavI don't beleive so.15:11
mccord42so what is the recommended way to install a system for preschool kids?  so that all the other packages don't get installed?15:13
sbalneavI think the dvd ships everything by default.15:14
mccord42should I just do a standard ubuntu install and then install edubuntu from the repositories?15:15
sbalneavThere's extra stuff on there, but like I say, if you just create icons on the desktop for the stuff your little one needs, they'll never see it in the menus.15:15
sbalneavYou can do it that way as well.15:16
sbalneavAll edubuntu is is just Ubuntu with different default package selections.15:16
mccord42yeah, I see that now. I thought it had a couple different interface setups. but I guess I'll be doing that part myself. :)15:17
sbalneavBut, having two teenagers of my own, I know kids grow up ;) Why not leave all the stuff on there, and as they grow, the systems grows with them?15:17
sbalneavmccord42: We've always just used standard gnome.15:17
sbalneavI think there are Sugar packages available, but I'm not sure.15:18
mccord42I hate to sound like i'm ripping on a free product, but I think I see why childsplay isn't part of edubuntu.  I wonder who's idea it was to make the users type in their name to use a program that looks to be designed for 2-4 year olds?15:20
sbalneavType in what name? Their userid?15:22
sbalneavYou can certainly set up gdm to autologin15:23
sbalneavand childsplay IS available as an installable package.15:24
mccord42I know gdm will auto login. :) I meant childsplay won't open without entering a name.15:30
sbalneavI'd expect, if you can't just somehow pass a preconfig to childsplay to tell it the name, that it wouldn't be that hard to patch it to pull the name from the GECOS field of the /etc/passwd file.15:33
sbalneavsimple getpwent($USER) should solve that.15:34
sbalneavI'll bring it up at the next council meeting.  Perhaps we could officially support childsplay as a desktop environment.15:34
highvoltagehi sbalneav15:45
sbalneavMorning highvoltage15:46
sbalneavhighvoltage: When's our next meeeeeeeting?15:47
stgrabersbalneav: waiting for the CC to announce the new EC, should happen quite soon15:47
stgraberthen we'll have a meeting for sure15:47
sbalneavDid anyone vote for me? :)15:48
stgraberwe all received 6 votes in favor, none against15:48
sbalneavLol, well, at least 6 people like us :)15:49
sbalneavAnd nobody actively hates us :)15:49
sbalneavWe're in the black!15:49
highvoltagesbalneav: heh :)15:51
mccord42hmm, I may try the netbook remix gnome interface on my kids edubuntu computer.  It's very icon heavy.  Will probably be good for prereaders15:51
highvoltagesbalneav: I finally subscribed to the ltsp-developer mailing list, all these years I thought there was only the -discuss list15:52
stgraberhehe15:52
Ahmuck-Sryes, i've wondered about the remix interface18:34
Ahmuck-Srinterfaces are key to winning new users18:35
Ahmuck-Sranybody using google chrome?18:35
pleia2congrats on your new council :)18:36
jbichacongratulations new council members!18:44
stgraberthanks18:53
Ahmuck-Srnew council ?18:54
* Ahmuck-Sr musta missed a meeting18:54
alkisgYup, congrats to all :)18:54
Ahmuck-Srnubae apply ?18:54
highvoltageyay, we should schedule a meeting18:54
sbalneav\o/18:58
stgraberyep, is Wednesday too soon ? should we wait till after the holidays ?18:58
sbalneavhighvoltage: here, was out at lunch18:58
highvoltageI don't think wednesday is too soon18:59
highvoltagebetter do it earlier than later I think18:59
sbalneavAgreed.19:00
stgraberok, so let's do it on Wednesday19:02
stgraberhighvoltage: can you do the anouncement ?19:03
stgraber(I've got a meeting just now)19:03
highvoltagestgraber: 18:00 UTC?19:04
stgraberhighvoltage: 19UTC would be better for me, 18UTC is just the end of my lunch break19:05
highvoltagestgraber: ok19:05
stgraberalkisg, sbalneav, nixternal: is it ok for you too ?19:08
alkisgIt's ok for me...19:08
sbalneav18:00 utc is a-ok for me.19:08
sbalneavThunderbirds are go!19:09
stgraberactually, we were more talking 19:00UTC though I can probably arrange to be around at 18:00UTC if 19:00 is an issue to anyone19:09
nixternalstgraber: works for me19:09
nixternalanything between 16:00 UTC and 07:00 UTC is perfect19:10
stgraberhighvoltage: I booked you in the office calendar.19:15
highvoltagestgraber: great19:16
sbalneavhighvoltage: You in Canada?19:17
highvoltagesbalneav: not yet19:18
stgrabersbalneav: unfortunately not yet, immigration is a pain ...19:18
sbalneavBummer.19:20
sbalneavWho's the holdup? Canada?19:20
highvoltagesbalneav: well, my police clearance certificate took a whole month19:20
highvoltagesbalneav: I thought it would take just a day19:20
highvoltagesbalneav: that was the biggest hold-up, I have all the necessary documentation now so I'll be posting it to the embassy tomorrow morning19:21
sbalneavServes you right for knocking over that bank, and the international diamond smuggling ring you used to run. :)19:21
highvoltagesbalneav: ps: the people at work don't know what Canada is, they just know Quebec :)19:21
highvoltagesbalneav: ssh19:21
stgraberhighvoltage: not true for eveyone :) but indeed a lot of us only know Quebec and didn't have to go through the federal stuff19:22
highvoltagestgraber: yeah I know :)19:22
sbalneavWell, Quebec is a distinct society, after all <ducks>19:22
highvoltagestgraber: ah ok19:22
highvoltageI called some people "Canadians" and they said "we're not canadians! we're Québécois!"19:23
highvoltagethey meant it tongue-in-cheek, of course, but it's still funny :)19:24
sbalneavJust make sure to prominently wear a Canadian Flag on St. Jean Baptiste day, and you'll be fine :)19:24
stgraberI guess half of the office considers themselves Quebecois and the other half Canadian (for the Canadian employes obviously ;))19:24
highvoltagewhat day is that?19:24
stgrabersbalneav: hehe :)19:25
stgraberhighvoltage: 24th of June IIRC19:25
highvoltagewell, nothing wrong with a little bit of national pride :)19:25
sbalneavhahhahahaha19:27
sbalneavstgraber: ah, he has so much to learn, eh?19:28
sbalneavhighvoltage: There's an old joke in Canada19:28
sbalneav"Why is your money different colours?"19:29
highvoltagesbalneav: just one!?19:29
sbalneav"Because our beer actually has alcohol in it!" :)19:29
sbalneavSo, c'mon over, and have a beer :)19:29
highvoltageheh. canada has higher alcahol levels? how much?19:29
sbalneavWe just need one more member of the edubuntu council to move to canada, then we can proceed with the master plan of renaming edubuntu to Canabuntu :)19:30
sbalneavOoops, did I say that out loud?19:30
sbalneavThese aren't the droids you're looking for.19:30
sbalneavMove along.19:30
Ahmuck-Srwouldn't it be Canbuntu?19:30
sbalneavNah, needs one more syllable19:31
sbalneavhighvoltage: Lots of beers start at 5.19:31
sbalneavIt's not hard to find beers with 6+19:32
stgraberhighvoltage: the beer I usually try here is between 6 and 9 %19:32
stgraberit can go up to 11-12 and there is some weird stuff with even more :)19:32
highvoltagewow I've never had beer with 9% alcahol level before!19:32
highvoltageI think the highest we get here is 6.519:32
highvoltage(and if you even have just half a beer like that you're not allowed to drive otherwise you go to jail)19:33
stgraberhighvoltage: it's 0.08% here, not 0.05% as you have in South Africa (and I had in Switzerland)19:35
sbalneavWell, same here.19:35
sbalneavI think the legal limit works out to one full 5% beer.19:36
* alkisg is drinking one with 5% now :)19:36
sbalneavSo one full 8% beer's gonna mean at least a couple hours wait, or a cab home.19:36
stgrabercab is cheap in Sherbrooke ;)19:37
sbalneavThe wife and I drive into work, so if I stay late for a beer or two "with the crew" after work on a Friday, I just hop a bus home.19:37
highvoltagecabs was very expensive here, but since the new laws here they became more popular and the prices came down a bit19:37
highvoltagesbalneav: nice :)19:38
highvoltagewe don't really have busses that run at night here, I guess that will improve somewhat with the soccer world cup next yaer19:39
stgraberI usually can easily get back home for 10 or so CAD, so it's not so bad (especially as we are a few living in the same area)19:44
stgraberbtw, I sent an email to cjwatson about getting LTSP in the live environment with a few questions, I hope to have an answer quite soon.19:45
stgraberI'll also add most of the stuff we've been discussing with Jonathan recently as part of the agenda for Wednesday so we can quickly go through that and split the work19:46
