Roasted_Has anybody noticed in Kubuntu that if you change your screen resolution and reboot that it doesn't keep the setting?04:53
Roasted_I take it nobody else has noticed this but me?04:58
sinclair86oh shit sup roasted... got yer shit fixed since yesterday?04:59
Roasted_what was my problem yesterday?05:00
sinclair86you had to keep installing for some reason?05:00
Roasted_ummmmm05:00
Roasted_I had several problems yesterday05:01
Roasted_lol05:01
Roasted_just trying tot hink about which one I would have mentioned in here05:01
Roasted_what the05:01
sinclair86lol im not sure either was trying to help i know you gots 2 kubuntu computers... was it tyhe networking?05:01
Roasted_I just quit?05:01
Roasted_I dont believe so. Both computers are running though.05:01
Roasted_I dual booted them. XP and Kubuntu.05:01
Roasted_those suckers are faster than my own :(05:02
Roasted_I got double the cores but they have a faster core clock speed and DDR3 ram with some more speed05:02
sinclair86my servers i own are faster than my person pc... lol i turned all my desktop into servers and stuck myself with a p3 256 ram05:02
Roasted_llol, nice05:03
Roasted_I dont have any real "servers". my kubuntu desktop Im on has a pair of drives in it that are shared out for file services.05:03
sinclair86yea need a pratice enviroment im a systems admin for my work05:03
Roasted_1 is shared, the 2nd is just a backup of the primary05:03
Roasted_hey have you ever messed around with resolution in kde?05:03
Roasted_I noticed a weird issue that Im kind of surprised exists05:04
sinclair86oh?05:04
Roasted_yeah - I change the resolution. Apply. Okay. Reboot.05:04
Roasted_Upon reboot it  goes back to native rez.05:04
Roasted_tested it ton 4 pcs05:04
Roasted_it on*05:04
sinclair86kde 4.4 or 4.3? all 9.10?05:04
kaitosRoasted_: yeah, kubuntu refuses to remember my dual monitor setup05:04
Roasted_kaitos - I didnt even bother trying to attack my dual monitor setup with KDE. I already had ubuntu on here so I just copied the xorg over.05:05
Roasted_sinclair86 - yeah theyre all 9.01 KDE 4.3.205:05
Roasted_two nvidia cards, two intel cards. one intel is a laptop, one intel is a desktop. the two nvidia desktops are identical so I guess its just one that you can use for comparison reasons05:06
sinclair86eh weird... im glad i only have one res and thats 600 x 80005:06
Roasted_Im downloading opensuse now to slap on my spare rig (one of the 4) and see if its a KDE thing or Kubuntu thing.05:06
Roasted_4 mins to go05:06
sinclair86its proably a ubuntu thing05:07
Roasted_which begs the obvious question - if kde is supposed to be more user friendly for newer linux users, why cant you do something so ungodly simple05:07
sinclair86kde is really not their priority..05:07
Roasted_sadly :(05:07
Roasted_whos top dog for a KDE distro?05:07
sinclair86no idea =\05:08
kaitosRoasted_: most people would say opensuse05:08
Roasted_it frustrates me because I love ubuntu, but I like KDE. So I was hoping to get best of both worlds. But little things in kubuntu can really irritate me05:08
Roasted_I heard the newer opensuse is pretty solid.05:09
Roasted_Ill find out in a minute or two when I intall it though05:09
sinclair86like i said when they release kubuntu a month after they release the gnome it just show where thier priorities lay05:09
Roasted_yeah05:09
Roasted_I like gnome a lot05:09
sinclair86fedora 12 kde is pretty sexy too05:10
Roasted_I switched to kde based on curiosity mostly. When I saw what gnome 3.0 was going to pump out I wanted to hurl and decided I'd stick with kubuntu.05:10
Roasted_is it?05:10
sinclair86but it rapes my little p3 :'(05:10
sinclair86yes05:10
Roasted_its just sad because distros like fedora, suse, etc. Their forums dont compare to ubuntu. :(05:10
sinclair86yes if i had a desktop i would have it installed right now05:10
Roasted_plus theyre RPM based....05:10
Roasted_which isnt a bad thing05:10
sinclair86true05:10
Roasted_I just like debian05:10
Roasted_like I feel like going to RPM would just neuter me05:11
sinclair86its pretty much the same instead of apt-get its yum05:11
Roasted_but doesnt debian have a ton more packages available?05:12
sinclair86yes05:12
sinclair86by far05:12
Roasted_gah05:12
webbb82_ok i got plasma-netbook to work but its just about more laggy aand slow than the normal plama-desktop05:12
Roasted_how about top dog for kde/debian?05:12
sinclair86haha thats actually waht we need... one of them over here...05:13
Roasted_my cousin stresses to me about how great fedora is05:14
Roasted_I should really give it a solid shot05:14
sinclair86you willnt be dissapointed esp if you like kde05:14
Roasted_yeah, I like KDE a lot.05:15
Roasted_I just dont want to go to an RPM distro and feel like I have nothing due to the lesser amount of packages being available.05:15
Roasted_but maybe thats just me being retarded05:15
Roasted_since I use very few out there, lol05:15
sinclair86they only thing that is a bitch in fedora that annoyed me is that they didnt have packages multimedia like how ubuntu has gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad ugly and good05:16
Roasted_I dont even really know what thats about anyway. I just install medibuntu and thats it.05:17
Roasted_Hows that play out in fedora with multimedia codecs?05:17
sinclair86thats the word i was looking for05:17
sinclair86\the codecs05:17
sinclair86not multimedia05:17
sinclair86oh and you know ubuntu has apparmor well fedora has selunix05:18
Roasted_apparmor?05:19
sinclair86selinux*05:19
Roasted_I dont evekn ow what either one of those are :/05:20
sinclair86https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AppArmor ubuntu does it for you but in fedora you kinda have to do it yourself05:20
sinclair86basicly05:20
sinclair86have you ever used vista05:21
sinclair86and its like click ok to run05:21
sinclair86those boxes?05:21

Roasted_wait05:21
Roasted_you mean the UAC05:21
sinclair86yea where its like allow or dissalow05:22
Roasted_that annoying effing "are you sure?" "no really, are you sure?" "you just clicked okay, are you sure?"05:22
sinclair86disallow05:22
Roasted_yeah I effing hate that thing05:22

r00t_ninjaany reason you arnt using 9.10 ?06:46
jc0694no... i can upgrade if u think it's worth it... i'm just trying to limit upgrading every single time an update comes out since each update runs a risk for messing things up... is this true?06:48
sinclair86depends06:48
sinclair86just do me a fav and humor me just to see where you stand "sudo lspci | grep "network" and "sudo ifconfig"06:49

sinclair86if the ifcae doesnt go up its the driver06:58
sinclair86i was just going to see if it was down forst before checking the the driver06:58
jc0694r00t_ninja, it only says something about my broadomm wireless sta being activated but currently not in use06:58

Roasted_I hate to say it, but karmic is the "vista" of ubuntu. Works great for few. Headaches to most.07:10
gphow do i do that without reinstalling07:10
Roasted_gp - ehh I dont know bro. I reinstalled...07:10
Roasted_gp - I had my partitions split, so I just dumped root and put jaunty back on top, leaving home untouched.07:10
r00t_ninjaim fairly sure ubuntu will keep your existing home folder07:11
r00t_ninjaalso gp: what graphics card07:11
Roasted_r00t_ninja - only if its partitioned separately.07:11
r00t_ninjaRoasted_: im fairly sure even if its not07:11
sinclair86k jc0694 almost done07:11
jc0694so are the drivers installed?07:11
Roasted_r00t_ninja - if its all 1 partition, home is lumped in with root. If you format root and put jaunty on top, you lose everything, home included.07:11

Roasted_r00t_ninja - Im sure it may be possible if you DONT format it and just dump the OS on top, maybe it creates a .old file for it. But if you select format + install, you're fried.07:12

r00t_ninjaim willing to bet those trouble installing it before were due to repos that hadn't been refreshed but ?07:19
sinclair86talking about apt-get update?07:19
jc0694guys, thanks for all your help, but i don't think we're on the right path here... i don't think there is anything wrong with the device or the driver... it's only a simple matter of turning it on07:20
sinclair86out put of lsmod didnt show the driver of lcshw07:20
FarOuttrust r00t_ninja07:21
jc0694... but i intalled the driver and it worked 2 bootups ago... how could the driver be bad?07:21
sinclair86not bad07:21
sinclair86bug in saved session -> nm reboot07:21
jc0694do u agree with r00t_ninja (i.e. remove the driver and reinstall?)07:23
sinclair86yes07:24
sinclair86you have the driver but its not loaded in the kernel07:24
r00t_ninjaany one here using a lcd screen with a 1440 x 900 w/96 dpi have good font settings?07:24
jc0694will i have to follow the steps from the manufacturer again to reinstall or is there a very simple way to install a previously installed driver?07:25
r00t_ninjajc0694: to install the broadcom driver you just go into hardware drivers07:25
r00t_ninjayou dont need to follow the manufacture steps07:26
r00t_ninjathere made to be generic to any linux distribution07:26
jc0694i'm saying that because the manufacture insructions actually didn't even work... somebody here finally proposed a work around that solved the problem and i forgot what that was now07:28
sinclair86your wifi didnt work straight of the box?07:28
sinclair86fresh install?07:28
r00t_ninjajc0694: it will work , i have a similar card in my other desktop07:29
jc0694no... broadcomm only recently started offering support for their wireless devices and my laptop was manufactured in 200807:29
r00t_ninjasinclair86: the broadcom firmware is proprietary07:30
jc0694linux support that is07:30
r00t_ninjaso no it isnt07:30
sinclair86ah fuck forgot i was using backtrack when i had my broadcom so it was already loaded07:30
jc0694they support their windows stuff well but with linux it's kinda "you're on your own/use at your own risk"07:30
r00t_ninjajc0694: yea , if you have some other way to connect to the internet in ubuntu its easy to install them07:31
jc0694here's the path to the directions: http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt07:32
r00t_ninjajc0694: did you do the blacklisting part?07:33
r00t_ninjaif so i suggest you undo it07:33

r00t_ninjayour wireless isnt working right?07:56
jc0694no i haven't uninstalled anything yet today07:57

jc0694assuming we do get this fixed, do i have any type of guarantee that i won't have to redo everything again once i turn my computer off and on again?07:59

sinclair86since you truned off saved sessions07:59
r00t_ninjajc0694: yes , the driver will be properly installed07:59
sinclair86r00t07:59
sinclair86it was installed right but there is a bug with wirless nm and saved sessions08:00
sinclair86i had the same thing happen08:00
jc0694do you mean deactivate? that's the only option i see... it's on the same gui where it says the driver is actived but not currently in use08:00
r00t_ninjajc0694: yes deactivate08:00
r00t_ninjasinclair86: that would not cause the kernel module to not be loaded08:01
jc0694its been deactivated08:01
sinclair86but it stops the wireless gui from connecting wasnt talking about the loading of it08:01
sinclair86and thats what he was ultimately going after08:01
r00t_ninjajc0694: ok now reboot08:02
jc0694before i do this, how exactly will i reactivate the driver again?08:02
r00t_ninjaby going into hardware drivers08:03

macowhy are you building the alsa-driver source?13:41
macoif you just want a newer version of alsa, install linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic13:42
lilyshuhi. i don't understand why sun-java is not working with some browser like ff, g chrome, and arora. and only openjdk is working. i try this in two laptops and in one pc and the result just the same. :(13:42
macobecause openjdk is awesomer?13:42

apparlemaco: Actually I want to write a patch for my own device which is not working with normal driver https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/49886313:44
macoapparle: i see. your patch should be against the linux kernel then13:44
lilyshumaco, openjdk is only working in firefox, the other browser can't load the applet, and do you know how to fix this? :(13:44
macolilyshu: no, sorry13:45
apparlemaco: Howcome... shouldn't the file atiixp.c from alsadriver be patched?13:45
simo_hello world !!13:46
macoalsa-driver is not a package normally installed...  the drivers are in the kernel itself.  i forget what that package is for, actually... :-/13:46
simo_i'm asking if i install a windows7, i will loose the kununtu's Lilo?13:46
macosimo_: yes. windows will overwrite the MBR, and there's no way to stop it13:46
macoyou can reinstall grub or lilo from a cd13:47
lilyshumaco, ok np13:47
simo_so how can i recorver it withowt loose my linux's data ?13:47
macosimo_: boot from a cd and issue whatever commands install lilo. ive never used lilo, only grub, so i cant be much more helpful than that13:48
simo_grup ?13:48
simo_and how can i install it ?13:48
macogrub and lilo are two bootloaders13:49
simo_yes13:49
simo_how can i install grup ?13:49
macothe "grub-install" command13:50
macoits a b not a p13:50
simo_now i will install a windows 713:50
simo_i will boot from the kubuntu's live cd13:51
simo_and install a grub-install13:51
simo_that all ?13:51
simo_and that will be working 100%?13:51
maco"sudo grub-install /dev/sda" should do it, i think13:51
macoif it gives you trouble, you can always get on irc from the live cd13:51
apparlemaco: I am having a similar problem as here http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7467#c30 So I think I must add my subvendor and subdevice to the atiixp.c file to automatically take the ac97_codec parameter13:52
simo_iec waht's this ?13:52
macoapparle: so just adding an entry to the quirks table? thats simple enough. ive done that :)13:52
macosimo_: irc is the chat thingy youre using right now13:52
macosimo_: internet relay chat13:52
apparlemaco: ya that's why I am trying to compile the alsa-driver and getting the error I mentioned above13:53

macoor do it against the git.ubuntu.com source...thats how i did mine13:53
simo_what's the diferent with lilo and grub ?13:54
macogrub is the usual default13:54
macogrub1 didnt require recompiling like lilo does13:54
apparlemaco: I am not a developer so  I don't know these things... could you guide me a little13:54
macoi shouldnt say recompiling13:54
macoit didnt require that you run a reconfigure command after editing13:55
macogrub2 does though, so *shrug*13:55
simo_i don't undertand very well realy13:56

simo_it isn't a matter, you saaid me there isnt a diferent14:19
macothey have different configuration files14:19

bobitoHey, would anyone here be willing to help me with a weird port issue?  I'm just trying to 'open' a port (on hardy), and I've already forwarded it on my router, opened it in ufw and iptables, and transmission should be listening to the port, but bopth transmission, nmap, and an online service still see it as closed.  I'm out of ideas, and can't find any novel ones in online manuals.  Thanks in advance ya'll.23:10
bobitoand sorry for the spam23:11
DarkriftXr00t_ninja: i dont see anything23:12

bobitor00t_ninja: II checked with netstat and transmission is listening23:15
bobitor00t_ninja: But I don't know what you mean by checking the right address.  in my router page I "forwarded" the range 51412-5141423:16
r00t_ninjawhere did you foward it to23:16
