squirrelpimp | hi | 11:21 |
squirrelpimp | i'm looking for a way to monitor processes that run on my system for some 30 minutes. Usually i start then and i'd like to become notified upon completion. However i'd prefer some notification area over a popup and i'd also prefer not to mess with the shell starting the process. So the most favourable thing would be having a python script check for process completion and turn some light/knob/website from blue to red/green depending on | 11:23 |
squirrelpimp | the exit code. | 11:23 |
squirrelpimp | now the questions: Is there something already implementing this feature? And how can i wait for a process and determine its exit status, if i'm not the parent process? | 11:23 |
edson | help meeeeeeeeeeeee | 12:03 |

knome | balvonas, that's not a very good attitude/manners from you either. | 12:38 |
balvonas | i'm a hater what can i say | 12:42 |
genoobie | morning all | 14:49 |
djura-san | morning | 14:50 |
genoobie | oh | 14:55 |
genoobie | does OpenOffice require KDE? | 14:56 |
djura-san | nope | 14:56 |
genoobie | cool, can't wait to install xubuntu | 14:56 |
djura-san | but you can use qt if you want for openoffice widgets | 14:56 |
djura-san | :) | 14:56 |
genoobie | qt? | 14:56 |
genoobie | what widgets are you referring to (very little experience here) | 14:57 |
genoobie | would you suggest 9.10, or 9.04 | 14:57 |
genoobie | someone said 9.10 had some bugs | 14:57 |
djura-san | aha | 14:57 |
djura-san | nothing then | 14:57 |
genoobie | my laptop is 256MB + 800 MHz processor, xubuntu would be okay? | 14:57 |
djura-san | just install openoffice and go :) | 14:57 |
djura-san | it should be but | 14:57 |
djura-san | use alternate install | 14:58 |
genoobie | oh, b/c the installer is resource intensive? | 14:58 |
djura-san | desktop installation requires a little mre ram | 14:58 |
djura-san | yeah and no | 14:58 |
djura-san | if you use gui installer then there is requrement for that (i belive its 256 but its minimum). for text install there is 128 mb ram or less nedded | 14:59 |
djura-san | :) | 14:59 |
genoobie | so you say don't install the desktop? | 14:59 |
djura-san | no | 14:59 |
genoobie | okay understood | 14:59 |
djura-san | install desktop but in another way | 14:59 |
genoobie | gotcha | 14:59 |
djura-san | you candonwload xubuntu 9.10 alternet disk :) | 14:59 |
djura-san | *download | 14:59 |
djura-san | *alternate | 14:59 |
genoobie | let me try that (I'll be Ok with text installer) | 15:00 |
genoobie | debating on buying ram to upgrade to 512MB | 15:00 |
genoobie | system should run reasonably well on 256 tho no> | 15:01 |
genoobie | ? | 15:01 |
djura-san | i think so | 15:01 |
djura-san | i have 512mb of ram and it runs nice | 15:01 |
djura-san | but im not sure for 256 | 15:01 |
genoobie | def. fster than windows | 15:01 |
djura-san | if its slow then use zenwalk since its faster than xubuntu :) | 15:02 |
genoobie | last quest, can you point me to the alt install dist? | 15:02 |
djura-san | yes | 15:02 |
genoobie | zenwalk hmm? | 15:02 |
djura-san | one sec please | 15:02 |
djura-san | sorry | 15:03 |
djura-san | wait | 15:03 |
djura-san | on xubuntu site it says it is enoug 192 mb of ram for live disk install | 15:03 |
djura-san | hmm | 15:03 |
djura-san | maybe its true. | 15:03 |
djura-san | check this out | 15:03 |
djura-san | http://www.xubuntu.org/get | 15:03 |
djura-san | ps. here is alternate xubuntu discs: http://torrent.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/karmic/release/alternate/ | 15:04 |
djura-san | *here are | 15:04 |

genoobie | is it >> faster than zenwalk | 15:04 |
djura-san | yes i have | 15:05 |
genoobie | I mean is it >> faster than xubuntu? | 15:05 |
djura-san | zenwalk is faster than xubuntu | 15:05 |
genoobie | how is the hardware detection? | 15:05 |
genoobie | =? | 15:05 |
djura-san | not >> but > | 15:05 |
djura-san | well | 15:05 |
djura-san | go ti #zenwalk | 15:05 |
djura-san | *to | 15:05 |
djura-san | ask there (we will not flame here) | 15:05 |
genoobie | so I'd probably be better off with xubuntu as a first go, then try zenwalk when I'm comfortable | 15:06 |
djura-san | yes | 15:06 |
djura-san | that is nice resolve | 15:06 |
djura-san | :) | 15:06 |

emmy | some sort of system messages aren't showing up correctly. | 17:50 |
emmy | It is like the place I would see a dialog box of some kind, it just shows up as a black rectangle like it won't draw to the screen. | 17:51 |
mikubuntu | guys i stopped the update manager midstream and now have a milion error messages .. is that a job for 'autoremove' corrupted files? | 18:09 |
djura-san | no | 18:09 |
djura-san | apt-get install -f | 18:09 |
djura-san | then use autoremove | 18:09 |
mikubuntu | sudo apt-get install -f ?? | 18:11 |
djura-san | da | 18:12 |
djura-san | sorry. yes | 18:12 |
mikubuntu | djura-san, and then sudo apt-get autoremove ?? | 18:12 |
djura-san | yes | 18:13 |
djura-san | try it | 18:13 |
djura-san | or you can manually remove apps that are conflicting | 18:13 |
djura-san | but its better to use "-f" option in apt-get | 18:13 |
djura-san | :) | 18:13 |
mikubuntu | ok, thanks, i'm helping someone remote also, and i think i overloaded the synaptic installer | 18:15 |
mikubuntu | be back soon i'm sure, thx again | 18:15 |
emmy | does anyone know why xubuntu would have odd graphics for me | 18:16 |
djura-san | emmy it can be many things. | 18:19 |
djura-san | this looks like notifier error | 18:19 |
djura-san | so you can disable it | 18:20 |
djura-san | tell us, when can you see those "odd" graphics | 18:20 |
djura-san | ? | 18:20 |
djura-san | what do you do to produce them? | 18:20 |
emmy | djura-san, seems i see it in association with what I assume are messages from network manager, but possibly other notifications. | 18:22 |
djura-san | yeah | 18:22 |
djura-san | that is notification error | 18:22 |
djura-san | so you can remove it but | 18:22 |
emmy | where I *assume* a notification would be, or some other dialog, instead I see a black rectangle with some static in it. | 18:22 |
djura-san | tell me is there any graphic drivers on your system? | 18:22 |
emmy | not sure | 18:22 |
emmy | i don't remember installing any.. | 18:23 |
djura-san | that is the problem | 18:23 |
djura-san | you saee | 18:23 |
djura-san | that notification thing is configured to work with composite efects by default | 18:23 |
emmy | 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY | 18:24 |

emmy | djura-san, do you know why xubuntu 9.10 can let me use wifi when it's not encrypted but it can't work with even wep ? | 18:33 |
djura-san | nope | 18:33 |
djura-san | im not familiar with wifi | 18:33 |
emmy | hm, it's very tricky on linux. it never really works. | 18:33 |
