dorkfaceHi all.  I am curious, is it possible to run a shell script from the command dialog (alt+f2), and if so, how?  I've set the permission on the script to "rwx" for the owner, so it shouldn't be a permission issue01:38
Moscowxа?01:39
Riddelldorkface: it'll run but it won't show the output (unless the script itself runs GUI items)01:40
dorkfaceRiddell: ah, ok.  I was curious, because when I pressed enter, the window didn't disappear, so I didn't think the item executed01:40
Riddelldorkface: better to run it from konsole01:41
dorkfaceactually, I know it didn't work01:42
dorkfacebecause it was just a script that was designed to just start a program in wine from any directory01:43

snarksterthen its removed, but i dont remember installing it02:48

dodgersudo aptitude install pavucontrol02:49
snarkstersudo aptitude install pavucontrol02:49
snarksterduh wrong window02:49
zewmdamn   Please note that you should not have any sound drivers active when you want to use the ALSA drivers. If you have a kernel with sound drivers compiled in, you'll need a kernel recompilation    -- is that true02:50
zewmunless installing kubuntu recompiles the kernel, i should have the normal kernel from the CD02:51
dodgerzewm: you shouldn't ever *have* to recompile the kernel yourself02:52
snarksterok so the meter moves when the youtbe video plays02:52
zewmi used to back on deb 2.2 each release02:52
dodgersnarkster: good; there's a button that shows a sound device02:52
dodgerwhen you click on it, you should get a list of output devices02:53
dodgermake sure it's set to the correct output device02:53
dodgerfor example, if your laptop has an hdmi port, it's possible that it'll try outputting via hdmi audio instead, and the hdmi audio will show up as a separate output device02:54

=== rackIT_AFK is now known as rackIT
petsoundssubito, sorry mate, no idea, never had that problem before but keep asking, somebody else will know the answer :)07:56
dodgersubito: it sounds like windows is interpreting the hardware clock's time differently, thinks it's wrong, and then sets it when it gets a time from a time server07:56
dodgerthen when you go back to linux, it reads the time from the hardware clock and is an hour short because it interprets the value differently07:56

shadeslayer_subito: you need to add the PPA though08:35

shadeslayer_subito: nope the one on kubuntu.org08:36

PCdocI Just downloaded the i386 version of kubuntu 9.10 and burned it to the cd. When I try to boot from LIVE cd to try the kubuntu version.. it sends me to the command prompt after a while.09:00
fujimitsudid you check md5sum before burning it...09:01
PCdocyes.. it was correct09:01

PCdocI burnt this kubuntu cd twice to check if there is no problem with the previous cd i burnt09:05

jason_but I want to give it another shot. It was extremely useful for me at work. Helped me manage positioning of different access points with the same SSID easy.15:10
jason_has anybody here used wicd?15:11
BluesKajjason_, I'm using wicd on our laptop and it's working well, no disconnect problems at all.15:11
EagleScreenI used wicd, I didn't like it15:11
jason_blueskaj - have you used wicd with kubuntu for a while now?15:11
jason_eaglescreen - was you not liking it in regard to personal preference or actual useability issues you had with it?15:12
BluesKajyes, about 6months15:12
EagleScreenjason_: it didn't work well for me15:12
jason_eaglescreen - you had connectivity issues with it?15:12
EagleScreenyes15:12
BluesKajwicd provides wpa2 , wheres the network-manager only gives the wep option15:12
jason_but knetwork manager works fine for you?15:12
jason_network manager has wpa215:13
jason_we have wpa2 on our one network at the middle school and I use it fine there15:13
BluesKajodd, I couldn't find it15:13
jason_I think its a drop down option15:13
jason_but I think you're right - WEP is default unless you hit that box to bring up the othe roptions15:13
BluesKajyeah, the drop down only has wep encryption15:14
jason_Ive got 5 options15:14
BluesKajand a totally insecure15:14
jason_WEP, WPA personal/enterprise, WPA2 persona/enterprise, LEAP, and none15:15
BluesKajwell, wicd does the job for me15:15
jason_good stuff15:15
jason_I like the interface of wicd. Its 100% more useful than network manager. I cant remember why I left it though. I thought I remember it just dropping me off connections randomly.15:15
BluesKajjason , somtimes cranking up your router power output helps15:17
jason_blueskaj - I cant "crank up router power" on our main wifi network like that though15:17
BluesKajbroadcast/reception15:17
jason_I had full signal15:17
BluesKajok15:17
jason_I had an access point right above my head15:17
EagleScreenjason_: having problems to connect under WPA?15:17
BluesKajbummer15:17
jason_eaglescreen - when I was running WICD I was on a WPA2 network and I remember running into issues related to connections dropping off.15:18
jason_I'd be fine, working, on here typing to people, whatever, and blam it would say "activating..." for my wifi.15:18
jason_yet network manager never did that15:18
jason_but wicd is sooooooooo nice cause it gave me the signal strength of each individual access point in the area, so I could tell where I needed to add more APs or reposition them.15:18
jason_And so far I havent found an application that shows me individual access points like that except wicd.15:18
EagleScreenjason_: you hasve to try other knetworkmanager versions15:18
SnarkfishGood Morning15:19

jason_system-config-samba?15:19
SnarkfishIm in 9.04 as 9.10 eats my server15:19
BluesKajjason_, how long ago did you use wicd ?15:19
jason_blueskaj - about 6 weeks ago15:19
jason_yeah man. 9.10. :( :(15:20
jason_runs great on my laptop, failed on the other 4 desktops I tried to put it on15:20
BluesKajhmm15:20
BluesKajyeah, wicd is flaky with ralink , that could be part of the prob\15:21
jason_ralink?15:21
Snarkfishyou know open system-settings goto advanced there is a smaba module. i click it and nothing happens15:21
jason_snark - youre on kubuntu right?15:21

Snarkfishyes15:21
jason_how do I add it to kubuntu??15:21
EagleScreenjason_: are you using Kubuntu karmic?15:22
SnarkfishI have no idea. also when i goto share setting in properties i get the password screen but nothing happens15:22
jason_on this laptop yes15:22
jason_snarkfish - so that module came preinstalled?15:22
SnarkfishNo Karmic hates this machine. Its jaunty15:22
Snarkfish9.0415:22
jason_whaaat15:23
jason_I want that module :(15:23
jason_then I can see if it bombs out on me15:23
BluesKaj!ralink15:23
ubottuWireless documentation, including how-to guides and troubleshooting information, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs15:23
jason_yeah but, what IS ralink? I just never heard of it.15:24
EagleScreenjason_: KDE networkmanager wodget never worked for WAP in jaunty15:24
Snarkfishralink is a network driver or card.15:25
jason_eaglescreen - are you sure about that? I only put karmic on this laptop about a month ago, and I never had wifi issuess with WPA2 and knetwork manager prior...15:25
jason_I never had wifi issues PERIOD exept me wanting to see individual APs in the area15:25
jason_which btw snark do you know of a tool that does that?15:25
BluesKajit's a network card chipset I believe ..not sure , but there many cards from different companies that use it15:26
jason_ah I see15:26
jason_(btw Im still looking for that samba module, when I install it Ill let you know if it works for me)15:26
BluesKajI have belkin usb that uses the rt series driver (ralink) and newest wicd doesn't work with it15:27
Snarkfishi just use knetworkmanager to see other AP's15:28
EagleScreenjason_: I never could to connect to a WPA in Jaunty using KDE widget for networkmanager15:28
Snarkfishany of you in here good with samba??15:28
jason_snarkfish - whats the issue exactly?15:28
jason_(Im at work so excuse slow responses)15:28
Snarkfishjust making sure Im doing it right..15:28
BluesKajrather than run more cat5/6 cable in the house , apita btw,I opted for the belkin , which worked fine on jaunty , but quit on karmic15:29
EagleScreenjason_: then you are now using jaunty, and you cannot connect to WPA?15:29
jason_eaglescreen - I could ALWAYS connect to WPA/WPA2. Im on Karmic now. Fresh install as of last week. My problem was, I used to use WICD instead of knetwork manager because WICD had more options I liked for wifi network managing with the bigger networks we have at work. But with WICD, sometimes I had connection issues. I could always connect fine - it would just drop off, unwarranted. KNetwork Manager never dropped me off like that.15:30
jason_snarkfish - well what wall are ya running into? I use samba heavily at home and have for 4-5 years now, but Im certainly no expert with it15:31
EagleScreenokay jason_15:31
Snarkfishon the stpes for samba.. 1 adduser to the system, 2 adduser to samba just works after that right?15:31
EagleScreenjason_: are you using the karmic wicd version in repository?15:32
jason_Im not using WICD.15:33
jason_I was just asking what other users thought about it recently.15:33
jason_Currently my karmic laptop (that Im on now) is being the image server for a lab of XP machines, reimaging the entire thing. So I dont wnat to screw around with it at the moment till theyre done :P15:33
jason_snarkfish - well you need a system user prior to using samba for that user.15:33
Snarkfishafk15:33
jason_snarkfish - so if you need jon to work with samba, add jon as a user to the linux box itself. Then add jon as a samba user.15:33

jasonand also, if you want ilumi to be the owner of that folder and EVERYTHING inside, you need to use -R with it19:57
drabinaWhat is policy about ppa repos related to kde (kubuntu 10.04 LTS edition). If I enable ppa repo (deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/ppa/ubuntu karmic main), does it mean I will get updates based on kde  for 4.4.x (let say bug fix updates) or latest version of kde in general (for instance 4.6.x after two years)?19:57
Icari|macshadeslayer_: manual setting of the network is not working either19:57

ElTimojason: sounds like a personal problem. they make pills for that now20:19
jasonno matter WHAT happens to network manager or wicd, the interface file is a "I own all" type of situation20:19
ElTimoshadeslayer: it still says that it's using ~50% of my ram, which is a lot more than it should be using20:19
jasonit doesnt matter how badly messed up those programs are, the interface file should own all20:19
Icari|macjason: maybe the interfaces file is set wrong, i was not 100% sure on it20:19

jasonIcari|mac: I dont mean to sound like I doubt you, but Im betting that might be the case20:20

murkeeshadeslayer,  instead of waiting 5 minutes for a page to load, i want it faster20:41
murkeeand i know its kubuntu's fault.20:42
FloodBotK3!netsplit20:42
ubottunetsplit is when two IRC servers of the same network (like freenode) disconnect from each other, so users on one server stop seeing users on the other. If this is happening now, just relax and enjoy the show. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netsplit20:42
murkeeshadeslayer?20:44

jadedtechgreetings all!21:07
jadedtechtrying to tackle another problem.....video.....got a million sites telling me to go to "System->Administration->Hardware Drivers. " but that menu does not exists (the drivers), Karmic 9.10.  Any ideas?21:09
Icari|macsearch for hardware in kickoff21:10
jadedtechwhat is kickoff?21:18
Icari|macthe default kmenu in kde421:18
Icari|macthere should be a "search" bar put in hardware in it21:19
jadedtechthere is a 'search for files', that what you meant?21:21
Icari|maca search bar on top of the menu21:24
jadedtechthree is no search 'bar'21:25
jadedtechthere....21:25
Icari|macmake sure you are looking in kickoff and not the other menu21:26
Icari|macyou can add kickoff by right clicking on the desktop and adding a widget21:26
jadedtechhmm...perhaps we need to clarify some things.  I am not in kde.21:26
Icari|macthen why are you in #kubuntu?21:28
Icari|macthere is a #ubuntu for gnome users21:28
jadedtechsee....learning all kinds of stuff.....new to IRC as well.....kde is only an option on bootup although when I shutdown/reboot it does say kubuntu....21:29
Icari|macsounds like you installed gnome in kubuntu21:30
Icari|macwhich makes it more like ubuntu21:30
jadedtechodd as I think I did the opposite.  This was a 9.10TLS install that was upgraded.  I do recall something about me 'adding kde' but perhaps I was mistaken.  Wow, lot of fun tonight, might explain a few other things too...21:31
jadedtechthanks, I'll hop on over to another channel....although no plain $#ubuntu in the effnet list, but found others.21:32
Icari|mac.... this is freenode :P21:32
Icari|maci wonder where those people went to that were helping me before....21:33

arrechehello22:17
arrecheis there any repo of kde trunk?22:17
paulsomebody_arreche: Maybe you need to check kde.org for KDE 4.4 SC binaries?22:21
ScuniziHow do I change the network name of my computer?22:26
arrechepaulsomebody_: thanks. I'm thinking in installing opensuse factory to start developing...22:28
paulsomebody_arreche: What is the reasons to?22:36
arrecheI've an slow machine to compile all from the trunk :(22:37
arrechepaulsomebody_: I want to compile only what I need :)22:40
paulsomebody_arreche: Build service?22:42
paulsomebody_arreche: They also offer packaging for other distributions.22:43
arrechedaly/weekly snapshots?22:43
paulsomebody_arreche: Rather no than yes.22:44
Scuniziwhats the name of the partition manager in kubuntu? gparted equivelent?22:45
molecule_HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!22:45
arrechepaulsomebody_:  so I guess opensuse factory is my best choise for now22:45
arrecheScunizi: kparted?22:45
paulsomebody_arreche: I guess yes.22:45
Scuniziarreche: that would be too logical :)22:45
paulsomebody_Scunizi: partitionmanager.22:45
paulsomebody_Scunizi: Kpatred is too obvious to be true.22:46
Scunizipaulsomebody_: is partitionmanager also based on "parted" ?22:46
superpiiiiI just installed kde 4.4 beta 2 . windows resizing is not smooth. I already have the nvidia driver enabled22:46
superpiiiiis my gfx card not good enough or is it kde 4.4  or driver limitation?22:47
paulsomebody_Scunizi: I don't know.22:48
paulsomebody_superpiiii: Have you rebooted?22:48
superpiiiipaulsomebody_, I have22:48
superpiiiiit is not smooth like in windows22:49
superpiiiimy gfx card is 7300 GT22:49
paulsomebody_superpiiii: It's rarely *very* smooth.22:49
=== paulsomebody_ is now known as paulsomebody
superpiiiipaulsomebody, can I make it very smooth22:50
paulsomebodyilumi: I think it depends what you found to be *very* smooth.22:51
superpiiiipaulsomebody, when I resize a window I see big great areas instead of the window content22:56
superpiiiiit seems kde is not drawing the window fast enough22:56
paulsomebodysuperpiiii: Maybe you should enable 'Show window contents when resizing' option?22:56
superpiiiipaulsomebody, now it also show it22:57
paulsomebodysuperpiiii: Show what?22:57
superpiiiiit shows the content and it is transparent when I resize the window22:57
paulsomebodysuperpiiii: Then I have no idea.22:58
paulsomebodysuperpiiii: Maybe you should watch some videos from kde.org and decide does that kind of smoothness exists at all?22:59
superpiiiipaulsomebody, there is no video on kde.org23:00
paulsomebodysuperpiiii: Oops. Then I think you should seek somewhere else. But I don't know what is to be undertaken if it's your system fault.23:03
danielq_hello. can anyone do me a favor? I tried to compile and install 2.6.32.2. After compiling successfully, i "sudo make install" but there were only two lines:23:32
danielq_sh /home/danielq/linux/linux-2.6.32.2/arch/x86/boot/install.sh 2.6.32.2 arch/x86/boot/bzImage \23:32
danielq_                System.map "/boot"23:32
danielq_It looks like it failed. why?23:32
